I know a real master by seeing his modesty. When Tommy gives even simpliest tutorials - he never shows off. He explains every quirk so you feel his kind attitude and don't feel yourself stupid or giftless. This is another part of his talent.
I still can't play any of his pieces but everytime I watch one of his lessons I come away with something I can use and build into my own guitar playing. It might be a chord sequence, a voicing or a fingering but there is always something there that is usable in general playing.
I love how his playing makes me feel. It sounds so free and spontaneous and alive, but then I realize how much practice, planing and experience goes into his art and then I'm really impressed with his playing. One cool Dude.
Remember not to get discouraged thinking "man I'll never make it to Tommy's level..." because first of all there are few guitarists living or dead who ever make it to "Tommy's level" and secondly it's not about levels, it's about expressing yourself on your instrument.Don't worry about what you've achieved technically. I don't mean to say don't bother trying to advance your technique, just do so from a musical perspective. For example say you're learning The House of The Rising Sun on your own and you hear an original idea pop into your head. Take the time to work out that idea even if it means (or rather especially if it means)having to develop a new technique to realize said idea.THAT is the way to think about advancing not by sitting there going over a major scale for an hour. Again YES, technique is important and so of course are scales, but try not to devote ALL of your time to the dry and unmusical repetition of scales. Think MUSIC.
This is so true. I've only just begun to play the guitar a bit shy of six months ago after having played drums and keys for the better part of my life. The difference in the way I learn now as opposed to then couldn't be more pronounced. It's basically a more top-down approach where, instead of continuously practicing scales, chords, rudiments, grooves and whatnot, I now keep expanding basic chords by experimenting and figuring out the notes I want to hear. This leads to many more "happy accidents". I'm actually surprised at how relatively easy it is to progress continually. I'm comfortably certain I'll never become as accomplished as Tommy by a long shot, but I do love the journey towards becoming the best guitarist I myself can be.
Most who never make it never tried. Tommy's where he's at because of hard work. There are few naturals like Jerry Reid, who, Tommy will tell you he struggles to play up to. Jerry was a genius, his picking styles alone were mesmorizing.
I love the way Tommy gives his playing a "zooty-yat-da-da-da" bouncy feel. Very much like ragtime playing, in general. He does the same to Deep River Blues. Punchy and Fun to embrace in one's playing. BTW: I recently learned that the gear icon in the window allows you to alter the playback speed! Listening to Tommy's, even slower demonstrations, at .75% brings it home. This is a priceless lesson, unattainable just a few decades back. If a young player isn't taking a lesson everyday on YT they are missing a world of knowledge.
Tommy's posts give me so many good laughs because of the way people like you cleverly express your despair. Doesn't make me sound very empathetic - does it - sorry.
@@allymayful It's supposed to be a self deprecating joke as a compliment to how good Tommy is. Now, what I find funny is how people are apparently offended when some make this sort of joke, i don't get why, might be from age difference.
@@allymayful Yes, but the thing is, these are older people not getting the jokes. Thinking it's a sign of disrespect to Tommy's teaching, calling them ungrateful brats and what not.

Thank you Mr. Tommy Emmanuel now I can officially say I have taken a short guitar lesson with the worlds greatest living guitar player. Again thank you
Like most Aussies, I've spent a lifetime seeing Tommy (& his sadly departed brother) on TV, astounding everyone with his soft-spoken ways & extraordinary talent. I've even seen him play live! It wasn't until I got on TH-cam that I realized how widely known & respected the guy is. I mean, we Aussies have always known he was world-class. I just never knew the rest of the world knew it too...!
Tommy, as someone who absolutely adores your playing, thank you so much for sharing your time and thoughts with us. What a gift and pleasure to hear and watch you.

I have watched several vids of Tommy and he always comes over as a very generous player, not precious at all. "Giving credit to fellow players At this level he still seems so enthusiastic and totally in love with the whole science of guitar. A real inspiration. Thanks

Thank you Tommy Emmanuel this is one of the greatest songs man has ever designed you do it amazing thank you for teaching us and giving us time your time thank you
Admittedly he doesn't always slow everything down and I have to listen over and over again to get certain licks just right, but that's part of learning. Practice, practice, practice. Listen, listen, listen. Try to get it right and eventually it starts to sound good and that is a great feeling. If you are a beginner, you have your work cut out for you. I'm intermediate and I practice that last lick maybe for 20 mins a day. After a couple of weeks I've trained my fingers and it makes me smile. Tommy, thanks.

I was in Canberra in a music shop once and Tommy and Phil were there just picking up guitars on display and playing them - some kind of promo! This’d be at least 30 years ago. Amazing.
To learn and play his funky little end thing ( Amin blues pentatonic ). go to 6.01, go to screen SETTINGS and select PLAYBACK SPEED at 0.5 and wathc and listen carefully. Take note of his right hand and the walking bass bit too. Tommy E is the man. I got it after a while, then realized he is playing a Amin blues thing.
I think I saw this video for the first time like 1.5 years ago. Playing this seemed complete fiction at the time. Went back to this video like a month ago and it seems like I am having it now. Thank you Tommy! Great as always.
Tommy is a once in a lifetime, he has influence my playing style and technic a great deal. I keep working on "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" & his harp technic is slowly coming to me. I step away from it and reproach it again and again. This tutorial is a great stepping stone to understand his style and abilities that come so naturally. I don't sing so putting the melody in the mix really works for me. He never bores me with his passion to play I have learned to Travis pick and a great deal more by studying what he does. 820,000 views, awesome! Thanks Tommy!!
What a fantastic version of this classic hit. I sang house of the rising sun in a school concert when I was a little kid because it was my favourite song at the time. This version is amazing and you sir are a FANTASTIC GUITARIST. Thankyou for putting it on TH-cam. 👍👍👍👍👍👍

No, I'll never be able to play as astoundingly as he does but I really appreciate his being a teacher here. For instance, while filming he decides to add that little bit toward the end where he throws in that simple run in the Am and E chords. Good teachers share the power, they don't keep it hidden. He's done this in concert, too. Between songs he spoke to the guitar players in the audience (Okay, that was nearly everyone plus our spouses) and explained how he personally broke down, developed, and practiced some polyrythmic piece he was about to play. In my opinion he loses no "sheen" by explaining how-to because he's still the master. It's great fun to watch good teachers teach.

Man...I love this guy.... He does it every time. I'll be right in the middle of learning some really dense new stuff on electric, then I hear him play and I want to drop everything and go back to acoustic. I never finish anything.
Something simple but he plays the Am with just two fingers, blocking the 3rd and 4th strings with his middle finger. In the intro that enables him to hold the A on the third string rather than play an open G while the fourth finger reaches for the C on the fifth string. Stunning musician, really nice guy.
Great lesson....I learned a lot in just a few minutes. Thanks very much for posting. You are a very good teacher.....something to fall back on if you ever loose your day job :)
