Irene Dunne, one of the most stunning, gifted actresses to grace the stage and screen. I visited Madison, Indiana yesterday. The locals knew all about her, proud she was a citizen of their town. I've loved her in every movie....truly gifted!
She wasn't there. Jimmy said it at the beginning. She was so excited to be there, but was unable to attend. She was 87 years old. Irene Dunne deserved at least on Oscar and in my opinion they forgot about her. She is my favorite actress. Why? Katharine Hepburn couldn't sing and dance like her. Same with Bette Davis and so many other. She was great at drama, comedy, musicals, and what a beautiful voice. My favorite and everything with such grace.
+Nancy L She was in DC. She got sick the day before and had to be admitted to a Wash DC hospital. She had severe back problems and had a reaction to the medication.
If you noticed during her film clip presentation the crowd started cheering when they saw Irene dancing as Magnolia to "Can't Help Lovin That Man" in "Showboat" from 1936 ...... that is one of the greatest scenes in cinematic history.
Nancy L She’s my favorite too. She was born in my hometown of Louisville, KY. I’m so proud to claim her. She was one of the few great actresses with such range. She was brilliant in drama, comedy, musicals! Anytime one of her movies is on I watch it, no matter how many times I’ve seen it. I swear I could watch LIFE WITH FATHER every week.❤️ I love WHITE CLIFFS OF DOVER, but I can’t do that one too often. 💔
At the time this was first broadcast, the New York Times carried a lovely tribute to Irene Dunne entitled "For Irene Dunne No Oscar, Only Love". So, so true.
Irene Dunn is in the Top Ten Greatest Actors In Cinematic History! Beauty, Intelligence, Strength, Grace and a Great Reputation Who Was Never Involved In Any Hollywood Scandal!
auwsome actress & person, I mostly remember the movie I Remember Mama, about an early 1900`s big Norwegian imagrent family`s story of well , being family , very very good movie , love it............
irene dunne was the most talented and the most beautiful woman that ever stood before a camera. I first saw her in penny serinade with cary grant and i realized then what kind of woman i wanted to marry , a woman of principles and timeless grace , out of all the other stars of that era , to me she was the most down to earth, real , compassionate to ever grace the screen . she always brought her personality to the screen and she was always natural , like a real person, not like a star or a ham , she was real. she had a very relaxed style and a great sense of humor . i will always love and remember her for those qualities, ---- D.T
God broke the mold after he made the multi talented Irene Dunne she lived five years after the award finally passing away on September 4 1990 at the grand age of 91, she like many other famous actors preferred to leave the memory of herself to the silver screen.
hi guys , my name is richard dunne and im using my nephews account (hence the name dylan dunne watkins) i came here to see my grandfather's aunt and my great great aunt Irene Dunne and im blown away at the amount of love there is for her on this site .
I envy your DNA. Your aunt was an extraordinary woman, both onscreen and off. There are historic plaques erected in her honor in both Louisville, KY and Madison, Indiana. The one in Louisville is on Fourth Street, site of the world premiere of "My Favorite Wife" in 1940 and the one in Madison is on Main Street, in front of the Ohio Theatre. I had the distinct honor and privilege to attend a showing of "The Awful Truth" at this theater during "Irene Dunne Week" in 2013.
Dylan Dunne-watkins What a thrill to see your note. I’m from Louisville and am so proud that Irene Dunne is from my hometown. I love everything she did. Her talent and versatility just amazes me. I never tire of watching her again, again and again.
"She combines elegance, grace, class, dignity...". Mr. Stewart was the perfect colleague to pay tribute to Miss Dunne. She's like him...a giant in the pantheon of Hollywood's Golden Age. It was so sad that Miss Dunne took ill and couldn't be there in person to finally receive the acclaim that was hers and that was so long overdue. I hope she was able to watch from her hospital room.
Irene Dunne could execute comedy, drama, and music better than, maybe, most of her peers in Golden Age Hollywood. With five Oscar nominations, how could she not have garnered the statue? The list of films with acclaimed performances is long; can't pick a favorite out of those movies. However, the Kentucky redhead was "lovely to look at," and listen to. Thanks for the memories, Miss Dunne.
She and Doris Day were national treasures. No one could ever compare to either one of them. I wish that they had made many more films for the world to enjoy. They were the real deal!!!!! 💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖
I just came upon this item as a cross reference--a thousand thanks for sharing it! Irene Dunne is my all-time favorite performer--no one can equal her versatility, skill, timing, beauty, and true glamour and grace. I was a university research assistant at the time of her death, and the professor who employed me brought in clippings of tribute articles from the UK and US. I was devastated--I didn't even know she was still living!! I began a library search for info. The London Times had a lovely, long tribute. The Pittsburgh Press (my local paper) also carried an article about a Pittsburgh teacher whose students had written to Dunne after watching "I Remember Mama"--Dunne sent each one of them a personal letter and a signed head shot. This teacher and I had both graduated from Carlow College and both became teachers--I contacted her and we became fast friends. At the time, Elsie Hillman, a prominent Pittsburgh heiress and Republican on Carlow's board, put me in touch with Dunne's secretary, who sent me a lovely note and indicated that she could not forward condolences to Dunne's daughter. (Anyone know anything about her??) I also spoke to film critic Michael Medved during a radio show shortly thereafter--he agreed that no one except for maybe Meryl Streep could claim such versatility and respect in the film pantheon. My early years watching Live from the MET on PBS were also spent enthralled by Frederika von Stade, an extra joy to see her sing the tribute. I currently serve on an advisory panel at the Pittsburgh Opera because of the influence of von Stade, Renata Scotto, and others. I still use Irene Dunne films to teach my drama students about acting, especially "I Remember Mama." I hope that Irene Dunne's friends and family realize that so many of us still cherish her. And for those associated with Elsie Hillman, Dr. Thomas Hopkins, Frederika von Stade, and TCM--still bringing us these classic film greats on tv--I am eternally grateful. Never underestimate the power of such connections. Thank you, Ms. Dunne. You have touched my life in so many ways.
Irene Dunne made numerous unforgettable films but I agree that "Show Boat" and "I Remember Mama" really mark here as unique and magical. When she does the shuffle in "Show Boat" it is an amazing moment; when she sings "After the Ball" in "Show Boat" it is a heart-melting moment. In "Show Boat" she ages convincingly from a pre-teen to an elderly lady and much of the authenticity does not come from makeup or costuming but the way she holds her shoulders and how she pitches her speaking voice. A true genius.
Show Boat was a decent musical nothing special, I Remember Mama on the other hand was great and important family movie with unforgettable performances.
Thank you for posting this touching tribute to the incomparable Irene Dunne. I remember seeing the original telecast and being so disappointed that Irene wasn't able to attend. Miss Von Stade was the perfect person to pay vocal tribute to Miss Dunne. A class act in her own right too!
I Remember Mama is one of my favorite films. When Irene Dunne in I think the final scene of the movie goes to the window and looks out while her daughter begins to read to the family at the kitchen table her memories of her beloved mother, played by Irene Dunne. Chokes me up.
THE WORD ' STUNNING ' COULD HAVE BEEN INVENTED FOR HER ! SHE WAS SOPHISTICATED WITHOUT BEING POMPOUS , SHE WAS SMART WITHOUT BEING A BORE , A SPECTACULAR ACTRESS , A GREAT COMEDIAN , WONDERFUL IN ALL SHE DID - HER PLACE IN FILM HISTORY IS FOREVER HERS - HER WORK , ABSOLUTELY SPLENDID ! GOD ALWAYS BLESS IRENE DUNNE !
X X I believe God always did bless her and still does. I read in the Book “THE RKO GALS” that in her later years when she had a little more time she went to afternoon Mass every day saying that it was no sacrifice to go to a 25 minute Mass to say “Praise You, My Lord” Her faith in the Lord made her the genuine person she was. No matter what her profession would have been, she would have been the same person. No wonder she was referred to as The First Lady of Hollywood. There was never and doubtless will never be anyone close to her style and talent and able to look completely at ease while being a perfectionist and knowing what she was doing every minute. Where is her Life Time Achievement Award?
i am so grateful for this post. thank you. we are inundated with " lists " ... the best, the most beautiful, greatest legends and on and on. it is a joke that irene dunne isn't included on many. she had the kind of class and talent that is rare today... simply wonderful.
Thanks for posting. My favorite classic movie actress--and I love so many of them from that era. But, there was just something extra special about Irene Dunne. Some of her big hits were remade--and I think that is one of the reasons she is not remembered as much as some other stars. Plus, the fact that she didn't live a life in the headlines. But, there really was nobody quite like her.
Thank you for posting the Kennedy Center tribute to the lovely, multitalented, supremely elegant Irene Dunne. Before Audrey Hepburn, there was Irene. Very different types, physically, very different performers, technically and emotionally, but well known for their essencial grace, their sophistication while being the embodiment of simplicity. It is with sadness that we observe that they were the last specimens of a species now extinct.
Irene one of the top 5 actresses.. fabulous. Wonderful musical tribute by Ms. Von Stade. Any body notice Bob hope moved by smoke gets in your eyes? He was in original show ! Roberta
Charming. Charming. Charming. You just can't use any other word to describe her. A lovely soul and devout Catholic. She went to mass and said her Rosary. I would say bless her but there's no need for WE have been blessed with her presence.
This was brilliant! What a treat as I've never seen this! I've loved Ms. Dunne forever, and was so elated by your post. Also, the performance by a young Ms. von Stade was like icing on the cake! Thanks so much!
Multiple Academy Award nominations, but never won. I Remember Mama just shattered me. When I first saw that, I though of my great grandma walking through Queens with her oldest daughter.
I love how everyone is there. Kitty Carlisle, Florence Henderson, Geoffrey Holder. No slouches themselves. And Frederika von Stade. So sad Irene could not be there.
5 nominations, not 3 as Stewart said. Fredirika von Stadt was great, although, because Dunne wasn't there, I guess, it became about her. Dunne was right up there with the best of them. (WIsh Jean Arthur got more current acclaim; she was the best for me.
+TheTerryE Back looking at this poor taping of the show. Thanks for the point out, but in fact you're wrong. They were never 3 consecutive nominations; the 1st in 1931, followed by 36, 37, 39 and finally 48; and never one for a musical as Stewart mentioned. Just another point of unnecessary information.
Irene Dunne is my favorite actress of all-time. Whether it be drama, screwball comedies and a quiet stoic role in I remember Mama. She played them all with the same professionalism.
I placed a two part tribute to Lerner and Loewe that is available. There is a complete tribute to "Beverly Sills Kennedy Centre Honours 1985" made by someone else that is also available. Did not record tribute to Merce Cunningham. Bob Hope tributes or parts are available by other posts. Thank you for viewing.
If anyone has any footage of the older versions of the Kennedy Center Honors shows, please, please, could you post it?! I'm looking specifically for the full show CREDITS. Thanks!

I can't believe Irene did not even come on to the stage and say thank you. And they did not even show her live in the audience once. Just a little still picture of her in the bottom right corner for about 5 seconds. Totally bizarre. She should have come up and said a few words.

@Duan aren’t those qualities missing so much today? Wounderful tribute.
She was one of my favorites along with Jean Arthur and Rosalind Russell.
My other two favourites too. 😘
Mine favorite too in comedy
Beautiful tribute so well deserved. Dunne should have won the Oscar for I Remember Mama . Having Flicka sing the medley is chef’s kiss 😘

Purely because
Irene was a magnificent singer, and, a fabulous combination of
Various talents.
Thank you!!
I had a crush on Irene Dunne when I was a young lad; I still do. She was elegance and grace personified.
This brought me to tears. Thanks for what most of thought was lost forever.
Notice that Frederica von Stade sings without being face-miked. That's the true power of a great voice.
Indeed. That is an opera singer.

Yes, it is called acting.
Show Boat was a decent musical nothing special, I Remember Mama on the other hand was great and important family movie with unforgettable performances.

Irene, ce qu'on appelle en France la classe américaine.

As is the long-standing custom, Kennedy Center Honorees do not speak at all.
Nice.
I understand Irene wasn't able to attend the performance, but did she attend the White House function before hand?
She was in hospital, I gather.
😢😢😢😢😢😢😢
Was Irene Dunne too ill to attend? I always thought the recipient had to attend.
She received her award at the White House, but her doctors advised her to not attend the ceremony due to health.
