They brought out the heavy hitters! Sutton Foster, Patti Lupone AND Audra McDonald! No wonder Meryl Streep looks like she's died and gone to heaven. She's sitting next to Barbara Cook and watching Broadway royalty on stage. It doesn't get much better than that.
How dare Lupone still sound that fabulous after 40 years of belting the hell out of Broadway and Audra is incandescent. What a finale. Bernstein at his best
In my opinion, this is the best musical tribute of all the Kennedy Center Honors. It's my favorite. The seamless unfolding of these super-talented women vocalists brought a beauty, brightness, and magical quality that is spellbinding. As others here note, Meryl Streep, Yo Yo Ma, Neil Diamond, and the others were as moved as Barbra Cook. I've lost count of how many times I've watched it. It keeps drawing me back.
willec7105, this tribute is definitely one of the best of all Kennedy Center Honors tributes. The depth and breadth of the combined talents on stage is beyond measure. This is a fitting tribute to an immensely gifted performer and Broadway survivor, Barbara Cook.
This is the best of the Kennedy Center Honors tributes to a Broadway performer that I've seen so far. And you could see the level of talent that turned out to honor the peerless Barbara Cook - God, Laura Osnes, Rebecca Luker, Kelli O'Hara, Glenn Close, Sutton Foster, Patti LuPone, Audra McDonald, all performing sincerely and at the top of their form on the same stage. No wonder the (always appreciative and peerless) Meryl Streep was crying. It was better than the tribute to her haha.
Meryl cried because it was heartwarming not because she was jealous. You can see how she always look over to Barbara every after song. No need to put down other awardee.
Clearly, one of the deepest benches of talent in any performance. But when Miss Audra McDonald enters the stage, the entire proceeding soars into the heavens. Those last few minutes are just stunning.
I don’t think that listening to Audra sing ‘Till There Was You’ ever gets any easier. Ever. She rings every word out to it’s full potential and makes it mean something beautiful.
I don't believe I've ever heard a more uniformly SPLENDID series of performances of great songs by a series of equally great ladies of the Musical Theater. Each has something different but equally wonderful to offer, but we must remember that it was BARBARA COOK who made ALL these magnificent songs famous to begin with. and there she was looking BEAUTIFUL and REGAL as a QUEEN at age EIGHTY-FOUR! 'Way to go, Barbara! You were a perfect Role Model for anyone in your field.
Streep stands in for all of us with her deep and clearly sincere appreciation of Cook & all of what she represents in musical theatre history - and also acknowledging all of the magnificent WOMEN paying tribute.
RIP Rebecca Luker. The incredible talent on This stage is incomparable. True legends what an honor it must’ve been to have been there that night. Wow just stunning…I’m not crying…you are 🥺
+Adam Valdez There's a video diary thing by Patti of the night, and she says that Glenn apologised to her on that night!! I'm sure you can find it on TH-cam
Glenn Close is a National Treasure. In my humble opinion, she is one of the greatest actresses of our generation. She has an amazing, natural voice that paid wonderful tribute to the equally amazing Barbara Cook. It's no wonder Anne Hathaway was so moved.
Oh Nick, I didn't know about Becca's passing for some reason. I learnt only today, out of chance - I came across the piece of news. Now I understand your comment about her "never" being honored with one. I might as well have answered that she might in the future 3 months ago... I had no idea. I'm so gutted.
Barbara Cook is possibly the greatest soprano and one of the greatest performers of all time. I saw her in concert twice and both times it was pure magic. I loved seeing some great performers lined up for this tribute, esp. with Broadway's current reigning soprano Audra McDonald and rising star Laura Osnes.
Oh my goodness, if you love broadway, can you imagine being there, that night, what a tribute. What I really enjoyed was watching Meryl Streep and Yo-Yo Ma’s reactions. These are the expressions of artists absolutely overcome by the talent. Loved every moment. Thank you.
I remember when I DVRd this special in my parents bedroom. I watched mainly for Meryl. I was 18 in the middle of my last Xmas break as a high school kid.
Thank you for posting this video!! I was hoping someone would. That's me and my choir, the Choral Arts Society of Washington, singing at the end. It was such a thrill to honor such a great artist, to share the stage with all of that talent, and to perform for the President and the community of entertainers. For one brief moment, I had the opportunity to entertain those who have entertained me all these years. It was awesome!
RIP Rebecca Luker. I knew her in college and was in Camelot with her. She was a wonderful Guinevere. I wished she had played that part on Broadway. I spoke with her at her concert afterwards. That must have been about a year before her ALS diagnoses. I am still heartbroken.
Watching this again I was thinking how lucky I was to see Barbara Cook live. She didn’t just sing the songs, she brought them to life. Never forgotten.
I'm a huge Meryl fan but I must say this had to be my favorite tribute of the night. Meryl is a close second. Barbara Cook looked truely touched and honor. Plus I didn't know Glenn Close could sing. And Meryl was crying. Now I'm about to cry. Beautifully done!
Were it not for Meryl, Glenn might well be remembered as THE actress of our generation...While Glenn is known as an extraordinary actress, she was also known for Musical Theatre (Broadway's Barnum). Meryl also has some pipes.
@@manuelorozco7760 Yes! It's an expensive endeavor but it's true there's nothing like experiencing the performances live. Hope you get to visit NYC one day :^)
This still is the best KCH tribute to date. Others may have had more famous performers and so on, but this was just perfection. The production, the pacing, the choice of material - and everyone on that stage making absolutely clear that they're singing and taking a bow for an institution of their craft.
Too much flawlessness for one video, good lordy! I watch this as often as possible, it's like a religious experience. Rest In Peace to the incomparable Barbara Cook ❤️
In 1986, I saw Audra in a dinner theater production of A Chorus Line, in Fresno, CA (her home town). She's gone nowhere but up, each performance bigger and brighter.
I can watch the everyday (I nearly do) and not get tired. Such great a great tribute. Our reaction lives inside Meryl Streep; she reacts for the rest of us. The talent they gathered to honor Cook is timeless. I love this tribute so much.
A woman I only just discovered being honored with such talent and amazing music to what must have been a truly amazing career. This is the amazing part of TH-cam. Discovering people who were before your time, but wanting to treasure every moment of them you can find. Barbara Cook was amazing.
The premier musical talents in the American theater saluted Cook: Audra McDonald; Kelli O'Hara; Sutton Foster: Patti LuPone; Laura Osnes; Rebecca Luker.
I was there that night and had seen all the rehearsals. This was an exquisite show. I was in tears during the rehearsal when all the women sang together.
You only have to watch the expressions on the faces of Sonny Rollins, Neil Diamond, Meryl Streep & Yo-Yo Ma to understand how radiant this tribute was.
Laura, Sutton, Audra, and Kelli are among my favorites (along with Barbara, of course). Patti is a legend and Glenn and Rebecca are amazing as well. How could you beat this group in 2011?
I watched this as an impressionable 10 or 11 year old, and was instantly in love with all of these women. Half of them I knew before, but this is what whetted my appetite for performance to the max.
Love every bit of this, especially the classic LuPone vibrato tension/release at the end of Come Rain Or Come Shine and of course, Audra and a magnificent Make Our Garden Grow.
I have a treasure - the original B'way Music Man cast album and I mean the FIRST vinyl issue that is in pristeen condition and bring tears streaming down my cheeks whenever I play it. Thank you dear God for Barbara Cook!
I don’t know how many times I have watched this video, but now more than ever it is a reminder of what we have lost in this pandemic. The magic of the theatre and will we ever get it back.
Coming back to this video after the passing of Rebecca Luker, I'm not crying you are
Ugh, yes. And Barbara Cook’s face as she’s singing. So beautiful.
What? Sad loss.
So sad. I loved her and her talented husband
Lost her life to the ugliest disease, ALS
She's not in this show, but not long before Rebecca Luker died, we lost too soon another great, Marin Mazzie! Both taken rather young!
Oh my gosh Laura Osnes, Kelli O'Hara, Glenn Close, Patti LuPone, Sutton Foster AND Audra McDonald the theatre kid in me is freaking out
Patti got the memo that said "metallic column gowns please" and was like "no thanks".
I'm pretty sure that all roads on youtube lead back to this video.
lol
And I need that, am just fine with it! LOL funny
Danny always, first watched it and jerry herrman’s 5 years ago. It keeps coming back and I’m so grateful for it

perpetual goosebumps...

Totally agree, the Julie Andrews tribute is also spectacular
willec7105, this tribute is definitely one of the best of all Kennedy Center Honors tributes. The depth and breadth of the combined talents on stage is beyond measure. This is a fitting tribute to an immensely gifted performer and Broadway survivor, Barbara Cook.

Anne Hathaway was crying too (at the end of "Losing My Mind")
It was such a great tribute. Up there with the one for Sondheim and Julie Andrews.
So good right? I’ve watched this 45 times so far...wowza
Meryl cried because it was heartwarming not because she was jealous. You can see how she always look over to Barbara every after song. No need to put down other awardee.
I loved watching Meryl Streep who was obviously touched by the whole thing. The great ones don´t get jealous.

Patti always steals the show!!! What a powerful voice...the vibrato ending is top tier
Her voice just falls out of her mouth. It's honestly ridiculous 😂
I like how she moves her head back and forth likes she's trying to take it ALL in and doesn't want to miss a second of it
Very Beautiful Voices. Also, Meryl Streep's genuine appreciation is a joy.
Streep stands in for all of us with her deep and clearly sincere appreciation of Cook & all of what she represents in musical theatre history - and also acknowledging all of the magnificent WOMEN paying tribute.
R.I.P Rebecca Luker you'll definitely be sorely missed 😢.
I was keeping it together pretty well. And then "Till There Was You" happened. Oh, Audra. 😭😭😭🥰
This is by far the BEST Broadway Kennedy Center Honors tribute
RIP Rebecca Luker. The incredible talent on This stage is incomparable. True legends what an honor it must’ve been to have been there that night. Wow just stunning…I’m not crying…you are 🥺
Yeah. Such a loss. I saw her in so many shows. She was perfect in The Secret Garden.
A tribute that is pitch perfect with a lineup.of superb talent. Rest in peace Barbara Cook and Rebecca Luker
Glenn Close was wonderful as always. She deserves that honor in Kennedy Center Honors
One of the finest musical tributes the Kennedy Center Honors ever produced.
Listen again to Rebecca Luker, one of the most beautiful voices ever to grace the B'way stage... ever.
RIP ❤️
Is no one going to talk about how Glenn Close and Patti Lupone appeared on the same stage?
I was thinking the same thing!!! After what happened to Patti with Glenn Close replacing her in Sunset Boulevard. Wow.
+Adam Valdez There's a video diary thing by Patti of the night, and she says that Glenn apologised to her on that night!! I'm sure you can find it on TH-cam
+Adam Valdez and I reckon Glenn Close didn't sound great. Or act it particularly well...
OMG... do tell!!
OMFG I JUST REALISED!
Audra is simply one of the best performers in the world. Also if Make Our Garden Grow doesn't make you cry, I don't understand your brain.
gets me everytime, just so, so beautiful
It makes my heart pound with joy
Yes and yes!
I want it played at my wedding and funeral
I cry every time..... Let it play at my funeral so my soul can leave in light. I saw Miss Cook in concert. I am happy.
get you someone who looks at you like Barbara Cook looks at Patti LuPone
What a tribute.
Glenn Close is a National Treasure. In my humble opinion, she is one of the greatest actresses of our generation. She has an amazing, natural voice that paid wonderful tribute to the equally amazing Barbara Cook. It's no wonder Anne Hathaway was so moved.
Patti Lupone and Glenn Close. These ladies are exceptional!
That's a looot of Tonys on one stage.
And should have been more... it’s a pity Rebecca Luker was never honored with one.

I need a full version of Sutton Foster's "Everybody Says Don't" with the orchestra PLEASE

+Jay Veerayano O yeah! And Laura's voice! It's sooooo smooth and silky!
+Jay Veerayano yeah pretty much! :) Outstanding performance
+Jay Veerayano Agreed! Those ladies killed it!!
And yet.... none of them could touch the brilliance of Barbara Cook herself!!
I'm 6'0", 265 lbs, love football and bbq and action movies.... and I love great music. This. is. great. music. Brava.

Broadway lost a shining star on August 8th. RIP Barbara Cook.
The only thing I have seen Barbara in was voicing Thumbelina's mother in Thumbelina. Sad indeed anyway
@@manuelorozco7760 --get some of her CD's. She made many recordings since her time on Broadway, almost up to the end of her life.

Ms. Cook, rest in peace. This was a wonderful tribute to a wonderful person and voice.
