    Many have commented the price of Astrobox Touch is too expensive. You can build your own Astrobox Gateway for around $65 or less.

      That is what I did. If you already use Octoprint, then you have all you need to try Astroprint. Just pop out the SD card and pop in a new one with Astro, and give it a try. If you don't like, pop back in the Octo card, and now you know first hand, rather than speculation.

    Great job, Chuck! We have been running an DIY Astrobox for about 9 months, and a DIY Touch box for about 2 months, on an Ender 3. While it isn't for everyone, and I am surprised by the sheer hate it receives, it does excel in some use cases. We have 3 printers, the 2 I use the most are connected with Octoprint, but my kids primarily use the Ender, and the Astrobox has worked out fantastically with it! My kids can either find models online, or make their own in TinkerCad, then slice and print them using a Chromebook, all on their own. Having a cloud slicer is perfect for this scenario. They can tweak print settings, and control the printer without having to delve into Cura or Slic3r. The touch interface is a real bonus! I used an extra RPi 2, and a spare 7" RPi display to build the box, with my own 3D printed enclosure.
    A recent update added baby z stepping, so you can now use live z adjustment with any printer, even if the manufacturer doesn't offer it in their firmware! Because of the Raspberry Pi, you can also use regular old USB thumb drives to add STL or gcode files to the box, no more stupid microsd cards. So you can also slice on any other slicer and transport the gcode to the Astrobox by wifi, ethernet, or thumbdrive. It makes the box very practical. The touch interface is very intuitive, and well designed. It is much better than TouchUI is on Octoprint!
    It isn't perfect, which is why I still have Octoprint on the other machines. Those machines don't need touch interfaces either. The main missing features that keep me using Octoprint are the ability to send directly to Octoprint from Slic3r, the gcode viewer, and all the plugins. One big advantage of using the cloud is the ability to monitor, and control from outside your home network, without having to punch a hole in your firewall. No Octoprint instance should be available from the Internet.

      Thanks for the great summary. Some people just don’t “get it”. You do.

    • @tomas_klouda
      @tomas_klouda 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Exactly as you and Chep say. Haters just do not see other side of the coin...
      Octoprint is for tinkerers, while Astrobox is for those non-technical people, who just want something plug-and-play.
      I wouldn't use it myself, as my RPi3 + Octoprint gives me the most useful feature of being able to integrate my printer right into the slicer on my PC.
      And quite honestly, I wouldn't sleep well with my printer connected to some cloud service. Maybe that's because as an IT admin, I know how often companies gets hacked and how youtube is full of videos of hacked webcams, etc.
      With Octoprint, I don't feel like loosing anything that Astrobox offers. I can control the printer and view the webcam during print from anywhere as well. I just need to rely on my own VPN instead of exposing the printer to the cloud.
      Having said all that, I do understand, that there are people, that are way less technically skilled and they don't probably even know how to setup VPN to connect to their home network from anywhere. These people want to buy a thing, that "just works" for them and Astrobox do offer that experience.
      The use-case with AstroBox touch for kids is another good example of usefulness of this thing.
      It is just obviously not targeted to the tinkerers who do like to hack things themselves, which are ,surprisingly ;-), huge part of Cheps audience.
      Maybe the hate wouldn't be here in the comments, if Chep had clearly stated in the video, that Octoprint can do almost the same for half the price, but you need to build it yourself.

    • @FilamentFriday
      @FilamentFriday  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Actually the largest part of my audience are beginners who are still learning how to level a bed and get their first printer working. Just look at the thumbs up to thumbs down in this video alone. .
      And the point of the video was: instead of buying a $300 small printer with the wireless capability built in, you can buy a $200 unit you can plug into any printer you want.
      I purposely didn’t include the Octoprint comments to avoid confusion for that target audience.
      The video delivered what I wanted it to deliver.
      It’s great that those more technically experienced watched and I really appreciate that. Some were great comments. But a portion we’re awfully antagonistic and that attitude often causes confusion for beginners and makes them retreat and that is what bothers me the most. Fortunately many of my audience still watched and at the end of it all understood my message.

    • @tomas_klouda
      @tomas_klouda 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@FilamentFriday Then I fit right into that largest part of your audience. With having my first 3D printer (Ender 3) since Christmas, I am definitely still a "beginner who are still learning how to level a bed"" :-)
      That doesn't necessary mean, I lack technical skills. I just totally lack any experience and skills around 3D printing and that's why I love your videos!
      Keep up the good work and ignore those haters.
      Some people are simply not smart enough to see out of the box, they are living in. The fact, that they like to build things themselves for cheap, doesn't mean Astrobox is bad product. This view is dumb and shortsighted...

  • @squat224
    @squat224 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    it costs as much or more than the ender 3. Can't see how this would be better than just picking up another printer. it's cool, but let's not forget it's just a raspberry pi with web integration and an app.

    • @echobeefpv8530
      @echobeefpv8530 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      And again, I would say, did that include a touch screen, a memory card, or the programming ?It is not just a Rasberry Pi with an app.

    • @squat224
      @squat224 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@echobeefpv8530 the "programing" is free, sd cards are far cheaper than the raspberry pi, and a touch screen seems useless if the whole point of the 200$ box is app control. It is exactly that, a raspberry pi with an app, you can see this for yourself, they allow you to download JUST the software for your own raspberry pi. Do any of these features make your 3d printer more reliable? easier to use? I'd argue they don't. This 200$ purchase doesn't include a much more important feature (than a touch screen): the camera module. Without a camera to monitor your print, you'll never know if that print you started via app has failed midway through, or didn't stick to the bed etc.
      Every niche hobby has products designed to look flash and cool and separate the money from your pocket. There is very little advantage to spending money on this, when you can set it up yourself for a quarter the price, and for less than half the cost set it up right with a camera. Lets not also forget that the ender 3 sucks via USB, overly complicated commands and prints will stall and bottleneck the printer, because it can't read over the very slow serial port as quickly as it can SD. and if you had a printer that works better over USB you're still back at the square one of: why not just build this yourself? You can go through the tedious steps of setting up a 3d printer and maintaining it, but you can't flash software to an SD card and plug in some wires?

    Great video !!! Lots saying you can build it yourself, and they are right, except this is a plug and play solution, not a DIY . Expensive, because someone else put it all together and made it easy. Makes perfect sense; but if you like to tinker, go the Rasberry Pi method. If not, this is at least another easy to use option.

    • @HackMonkey

      Yes on both questions! Astrobox is built on Octoprint, so its core function is almost identical. The API hasn't been exposed the same, so you can't send a file directly to it, the way you can from Slic3r. But you can preslice and load any gcode file from any slicer. It can also record time lapse video, or take snap shots. Unfortunately, it doesn't yet do the awesome Octolapse time lapses.

  • @Riprazor
    @Riprazor 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Chuck, I really love you channel and your content. I have to point out however, that anything connected to the Ender 3 via USB, including Octoprint (which I use in monitoring mode) or the Astrobox, will have a major limitation due to the USB port being a very crappy serial port that is inherently slow. Any complex geometry that requires a large amount of G-code to be transmitted at speed to the printer over that port, will potentially put the machine into a wait state since the buffer cannot keep up with the code over the port. This is why many people have reported better quality prints from the SD card on the machine. It operates at a much faster read speed and does not suffer from the same buffering problem. This is well documented in the Octoprint forums and is not something that is Octoprint or Astrobox's fault, however, it is a limitation depending on print speed and complexity. People will say "I have never had a problem", however, this is a well known limitation of the USB port in the Octoprint community. Anyone who has ever used Octoprint to transmit a file to the machines SD card (not the SD card in a Raspberry Pi), can understand the performance limitations of the USB port. If I spent a couple of hundred bucks on an Astrobox, without understanding this limitation, I would be somewhat disapointed. Just thought it should be pointed out. Thanks for all you do for the community! For more detail see this thread: www.reddit.com/r/3Dprinting/comments/90r69u/octoprint_vs_sdcard_print_quality/

    • @Riprazor
      @Riprazor 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@balls2bone Then you never had the problem we are discussing. It has nothing to do with the PSU or gantry grounding issues. It is related to the amount of g-code being sent over the USB port and the speed at which the printer can respond.

    Just wondering how much memory does the astrocloud can you store is there paid cloud service or is it free to expand the memory
    What is the biggest thing you need to setup with the Astro to make it work with your ender 3

    • @HackMonkey
      @HackMonkey 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The free version gives you 2gb of cloud storage, which is quite a bit. Once files are sliced, they can be transferred to the Astrobox for storage, and free up the cloud space, if needed. The $100 a yr plan gives you 50gb. But probably the main reason to pay would be the ability to add more then 2 printers to your account.
      Only thing you need to get going is a Raspberry Pi, micro SD card, and a USB cable. It is very easy to setup.

    I think 3D printers instead of a Physical screen/controller just should give a possibilty to connect with android, ios. I hardly doubt any person who buy a 3D printer does not own any of these device. Its ok if you want to have a dedicated tft screen on your printer, but then again there are many options out there.

    Sure, it's a lot more hassle to set up and maybe not quite as simple and comfortable to use, also no cloud support, but if you have an Ender 3, you are looking for budget performance and not ease of use. And let's be honest, who really cares about cloud functionality anyways?

    I know you addressed it already but the cost of this thing is way way far out. I understand the need to make money but @ 200$ 300% markup is just flippen nuts. I would say the manufacture needs to find income someplace else. I cant see to many of us 3d printer people jumping onto this 200$ octoprint mod when you can buy a printer cheaper then the price of this device or even as you state just making a octoprint @ 1/4th the cost. Even though they sent you the item for free. If you would have to spend your hard earned money @200$ for this you still would recommend this unit?

    • @FilamentFriday

      For someone considering the Toybox, or Modt or Mattel type Printer at around $300 for a non heated small bed printer then the Ender 3 and $99 Astroprint Gateway and Ender 3 ($279 total) or $379 with touch seems competitive.That is a portion of my audience.
      For those that like to hack their own together, you can definitely save money.

      finder is 300$ with cloud and cam. IF we're looking at this from a budget friendly perspective, still would make more sense to get something that is all-in-one and not something you'd have to buy from multiple parties. But each their own. If the video is aimed towards someone who already made the decision to get the Ender 3 and wanted extra features after the fact, sure...seems like a good deal. BUT for people that haven't bought a 3d printer yet, id rather buy an all-in-one. Check out flashforge Finder

    Or, you can do what I did... I don't need all of these touch features and fancy gizmos...plus, way, way to expensive and Octoprint is way to complicated, IMO. 🤔😳🤯
    I did get tried of walking back and forth with my micro sd card, about 20 feet each way in a C shape, to get to my computer. I thought... "is it really about the micro sd being so small and needing it to be converted to a full size SD card, OR about having to go back and forth to the computer... Over and over and over again, etc.???" 🤔It's the back and forth! Do I need wireless? No, not when it cost such a high proportionate price of the printer! So, I ordered a 15' USB extention cable for a USA seller on ebay for $6.75 ! Couple of days to get here and 5 minutes to install... Less actually. Done. Now I can plug the USB extention cable into my computer and route it over to my printers. I printed a mount and it's now mounted on the side of my desk right next to my printers! Pop out the card, pop it right into the USB to micro sd card adapter and into the extension cable! Simple and perfect... For me! No high priced, convoluted installation and products! 👍
    If I want a camera, they have security cameras now that work with a free app on your phone! Those cameras have motorized swivel to go up/down, and side to side for as low as $16.99 and are 1080p resolution...See Banggood. Awesome reviews too! I can see BOTH of my printers from the same camera and adjust the angle perfectly...and vuew frim my HD phone in 1080p perfection!
    Wired is always better than wireless and all those steps and convoluted process to install Octoprint or even the extremely overpriced Astroprint touch is not needed, and just more headache than I wish to go through! That's me... I just want to print. Some will like all of that stuff... Tge more complicated and feature rich the better, but it's not the simple way I like to keep things so it's not such a continual hassle to troubleshoot. Maybe it's actually reliable? But, the more stuff, the typically less reliable. I don't need or want that... For me!
    Simple and low cost too. Often found to be the best for me. 😎🤘
