Thanks man, .. especially fond of the audio at the 9:30 mark, .. and more importantly, the impressions that you're arriving at. I sure hope this comes across the way I intend this .. I'm noting videos like this, the gear being discussed .. for the day, that my ear can detect, and appreciate these more subtle nuances that these modules produce. I believe I'm getting more sensitive to the things that you are mentioning. Scuffing up, or "naturalizing" my keyboard synth was the reason why I got interested in this modular quest, in the first place .. and, it's taken me places that I hadn't planned on. .. :)
The demos that Serge has for the modules are nice to listen to. I remember fisrt hearing Serge in ... late 1980s, IIRC. Always on my list of favorite sounds.
the good "old" time... NTO was my first serious VCO, and as a kit at this time. And I still use it ! I must admit that now, I prefer the Rossum Trident : even more stable and precise that the NTO.
I felt it too. But you can probably get the full range of Serge euro modules for the price of one or two modern panels, so I am really happy for sticking to euro. Sonically they're 100% identical, but you'd need stackables. You're going to love my next video, can't wait to work on it and post.
I feel like the ALM MFX is always throwing me for a loop with my analog oscillators. Sometimes it's clipping, other times the final output is so weak I need to boost it. I tend to lean on my Zoia more for FX these days but I do really enjoy some of the algorithms on the MFX and the ability to quickly try things out with such a small footprint. When paired with other digital modules like Plaits and Rings it seems to behave better. I wish it had input/output VCAs to assist with level matching.
Thanks for confirming it could be the MFX screwing up. Love the module, never heard it before until DPO was used. Already attenuated by Optomix so it shouldn't happen! But it did.
@chrissherman01 Had the same thought. I used the 258t for about a year now in combination with serge modules because I preferred the tendency for more warmth and dirt. Also I must admit that the 258 and the serge wave mult are a fantastic couple as the 258 has two oszillators which varishape from a sine basis. For fm-ing this feature is definitely preferable as your output is a little more controllable. What I must admit though is that it seems that the tria/saw shapes have more tonal character at the serge vs buchla. Just some thoughts. I’m utterly fan of this channel. 😅
@@shirkhan3818 Thanks! One thing I wonder about is amplitude. I believe the Serge oscillators are +/- 2.5V while MN/DPO (most eurorack?) is +/- 5V. (I'm not sure about Tiptop Buchla modules, maybe you know this.) Does this cause issues?
I've always loved the 258 from the moment I got one. The 258 can morph between sine and saw on the top VCO and sine to square on the bottom VCO. With some clever patching and a mixer I think you can also get a varishape experience but you will not be able to modulate like on the NTO. For the portamento you'd need a 266T integrator and the 258 doesn't support hard sync. I don't think we'll have to wait too long for the tiptop 259. That's a completely different story.
@@chrissherman01One nice thing about Serge is that everything(!) is nominal 5Vpp. There are no differences in amplitude if CV, Audio or Logic - in fact there is no distinction between Audio and CV, only between AC-coupled and DC-coupled.
i had just convinced myself that i did not need an NTO. now it's pretty clear after watching/listening to your vid....i do need an NTO
So do I - but not at that price.
@@MirlitronOneyeah it’s pretty expensive for a VCO

I’m so tempted to venture into 4U. Serge modules are awesome and the patching style is just so unique.

@@CinematicLaboratory looking forward to the next one. Loving your Serge series. There are relatively few videos on those modules.
@@CinematicLaboratory Serge in Euro because of price and space give you the option to build a monster system. For instance, I have 5 NTO's

Same chip in Milky Way and FXAid exhibits the same behaviors. I have to attenuate a great deal more than, say, Typhoon , 2HP Verb or even PicoDSP.
@@VinceFinemMusic it is not the same chip. google it.
Any thoughts on how the NTO and 258 compare in terms of timbre and the character of FM?
