shtstirrer Where has Prost been as soon as a raindrop hit the race track??? Prost had big trouble in rain and rain is part of racing which Senna handled much better as anybody else in F1. Monaco 1984 and Donington Park 93 says it all!!!
Was he quicker as Prost in Monaco 84 - yes he was and only that counts. Why was Prost overlapped by Senna in Donington Park when he was such a great driver in rain??? In Imola 93 Senna had Hydraulics Problem so he had to retire. Why did Prost spin off in Estoril 1985 and Senna won with a gab over a minute to the 2nd placed driver? Keep wondering who the best on ice was!
The car he won in is in the mercedes-benz museum.. Apparently the head of it then was upset at the time coz he wanted a champion to win the race to attract more people but now says looking back he wouldn't have it any other way!
Seems that Senna drove as if he was thinking 'if I'm not slipping and sliding the car a tiny bit at every corner then I'm not driving it to it's limits'
I believe so too, although I think Senna was one of the worlds most fearless drivers - always so much on the edge that even the tiniest mistake or fault in the track or car could make him crash. I get the feeling that he was well aware of this and would rather crash in a race than to come anything else than first.
Prost was an incredible pilot, one of the bests ever, deserves my admiration and respect, but he also was the little puppy of Jean Louis Balestre and he did, as FIA's president, everything that he could to protect and help his fellow countryman. Ayrton Senna won in the tracks, driving and giving his best, automobilism and other sports like this are maden of taken risks, and by taken his limits so far way from the others many of you calls him "crazy".
Flavio Motti As they said in Senna's movie: "The pragmatics prefer Prost. The romantics choose Senna". I choose Senna as well...The best ever, no doubt about it.
+John19501000 ya but some of them stood much taller then the rest. no point in watching F1 since 1980 have I heard other Formula 1 drivers shake their heads or go wow to watching another driver. Caked the qualifying king Drivers of all eras praise him as the best. some disagree with some of his on track antics but none argue his talent his speed his control love him or hate him nobody will ever fill those shoes again. Prost was amazing but so was so many others in their respected eras only 1 has stood the test of time and is still talked about and debated. what does that tell you? a god amongst men
+John19501000 don't lie again, one lie told 1000 times turn the true...Senna never had more power than Prost, it's a big lie. Senna won 14 races against Prost in a same car. Senna won a championship without the best car in 1991, when Williams was the best car and Senna was in a great shape.
+André Marques Useless to talk to John19501000. He is like his hero Prost. I personally think that clark is the greatest ever. Won by 4 minutes and 54 seconds in spa 1963, in the wet, no other driver has even come close to that margin of victory. He fell down to last in monza 1967, was a lap down, overtook every single car in the field to lead, only to drop to third with ignition problems. 25 victories and 33 poles in ONLY 8 years and 72 starts, back when the seasons were much shorter than today speaks for itself.
Michael Roberts, you need to read more history. Fangio record is 5 Championships, 2 Runner-up with 24 wins and 29 poles in ONLY 7 years and 52 starts. Check the 1957 German Grand Prix Race, which has been called the best F1 race ever. After a bad pit stop, he dropped from first to thrid, only to beat the track record 10 times lap after lap to win the race, his last one, and being the first one to fly with his car in the Nordschleife. By the way, is well documented he was Senna's hero.
You take as reference Murray Walker which was popular but was ignorant but what about Williams, Dennis, Todt, Briatore, Ecclestone, Di Montezemello, Hunt, Lauda, Prost, Berger, Hakineen, Raikoneen, Alonso, Hamilton, even Schumacher himself or his friend Alesi who place Senna first ?
Senna was unique, he made the car a part of him and was able to control its direction and traction without aids, Jim Clark was very much the same way back in the early 60's. Schumi may be a good driver, but he got away for a few years along with Flavio Briatore with electronics, and he had to abrupty bump Hill and Villeneuve to win the drivers championship and manipulated qualifying runs occasionally to keep pole.
Oh God, Ayrton is my all time hero, but if Ayrton drove and won in a Ferrari it would have been magical, my 2 other favourite drivers were in Ferraris, but imagine Scuderia if they could have signed Ayrton. Imagine how history could have changed if Ayrton stayed in Mclaren and didn't go to Williams. RIP Ayrton, RIP Gilles.
Lastly. it's best to compare drivers when they drive in equal cars. Senna, in his rookie year in F1, beat world champions and future world champions in a race of equal cars. Schumacher, in an equal car, lost to a Nascar driver on a road course. Schumacher lost by 1.7 seconds in a 2 minute race, which in racing is a lot! His competitor, Carl Edwards, isn't even a champion nascar driver. He is not even in the top 10 in points, he is 15th in points.
dude thats ridiculous that williams car was built to have the electronic aids on it. its even a miracle how he got pole position in that car,oh and if you didn't know the bennetton had a better car in 92 and 93 than Mclaren oh and Bennetton had tracktion control on there car in 93
Trivia: Lauda demanded to change cars with Ayrton before the race because he thought Senna's car was better, Senna then won with Lauda's "worst" car. (I think Lauda just couldn't accept this newcomer having better times than him)
I honestly think Alonso is as good as Senna was, the way he has amazing car control in the wet and dry, the way he just destroys all of his team mates and how he nearly won a championship in a car that was a second a lap slower than the redbull of Vettel.
In the end, I still believe Senna is the best. How many drivers can drive a second and a half faster a lap than there teammate (Alain Prost), in the dry? How many drivers have won 6/10 monaco gps? How many drivers could lap a whole field in one race in a far less superior car? I believe Schumacher is a massive talent and deserves a lot of respect. However, Senna did stuff with a car that know one else could do.
What a lot of people don't know is that Alain Prost first met Senna before this race. They went chatting to the circuit, but after Prost got the pole, Senna stopped talking to him!. Then Senna hit Prost on the first lap and got him out of the race. Sounds familiar
No way Senna didnt hit anyone on this race , his Mercedes 190 from the actual race didn't suffer any scratches and is for display until today. Senna was awarded another 190 E black for the win as well which is kept by his family. Prost did pick him up from the airport and drove very fast, impressing Senna. they headed to their hotel first.
Clark was very impressive indeed. Would have been interesting to see them both in the same time with the same car .... although its extremely hard to compare, the things needed to be the best driver of a given time have changed a lot. Prost was by no means a better driver than Senna. He was not bad, but Senna won in equal cars, and not by luck .... Schumacher was very determined, and seemed to give Senna a hard time, shame they never really could compete. I am pretty sure it would have been ..
I remember in the 1990's being at Brands on a Wednesday morning and sitting in the pits watching a Manx Norton eating proddie 750 G xrs. Practice over and off comes the helmet, oh, it's John Surtees.
Williams was superior in 92 and 93 because of the electronic aid they had mastered. In 94, the year Senna joined, they eliminated that stuff. All the R&D they put in the Williams car was thrown out the window. Senna was left with a crap car. Even with a crap car, Senna got three poles. There was a lot of speculations from many teams Michael Schumachers Ford Benetton was still running the illegal system. However, no one ever knew because Sennas death overshadowed Benettons speculations.
You are the best, and it seems you always will be. Formula 1 has literally died with you since your demise. You took the glory days with you, with the sport diving towards bankruptcy.
@hlidskjalf666 There is something wrong : Schumacher wasn't in a inferior car. He was in a superior car. MP4/7A was one of the worst F1 Senna drove. And if you add the poor reliability..On contrary, Schumacher was on a Rory Byrne car. Just have a look on the shape of the car to see that Byrne was already on a view of the next generation of F1, in aerodynamics with a high nose allowing to give more down force to the car and to its extractor. An improve design of Migeot & Postlethwaite for Tyrell
@weallfollowmanutd Bollocks. Overhead camera clearly shows Prost turned in early. Besides, Senna's McLaren should have been on the the clean side of the track from the get-go. If P1 was on the correct side, Senna would have likely led from pole to flag.
I am totally agree with You: Fangio still the master in F1 racing. And nobody achieve this: Beat his pole [and absolute record of Nürburgring 9 times and 7 consecutive times in 1957 his lastest [ and may be the best epic race of the all history] from 9:25.6 to 9:17.5. A real monster. Yes the car was different but all the pilots drive to the limit.
Actually Senna asked some guy inside to get the name of the model they were going to race in and then borrow the exact same model for a test drive before the race (so he get used to the car). He was that determined to winning 😂❤
Prost took an "easy" pole position from Reuteman and Senna (Modern Motor, May 1984) before being pushed off by Senna halfway round the first lap....the shape of things to come indeed
Senna finished the race way ahead of Prost and somewhat to Lauda, had Senna not ''pushed'' Prost , Senna would have overtaken him anyway. Senna is too fast in the rain in F1 with them driving same car (mclaren) he'd often put 30-40 seconds on Prost or with a Toleman, which was a piece of junk, , overtake all the cars in the grid on the rain and pass Prost on a far far superior car (Im a Prost fan by the way , love the way he set up his car to understeer). As a curiosity it was Prost who picked up Senna at the airport a day before this race and drove to their hotel like a madman, impressing Senna.
@hlidskjalf666 ...They were later banned because of it. Senna and others were certain Schumacher was using either traction or traction + launch control illegally during the 1994 season. Much later, the car was examined and both were found in hidden computer menu able to be easily toggled on and off. Flavio said they only used it for 'testing'. Your man is a cheat. Always has been. I love watching him race because its great to have a Dick-Dastardly character in the mix. He's a great talent.
Alain Prost: "For this race at the Nürburgring, I was coming from Geneva to Frankfurt on a scheduled flight, and Ayrton was due to land half an hour before, so Mercedes asked me if I would bring him to the track. Then we got to the track, and practised the cars. I was on pole, with Ayrton second - after that he didn't talk to me any more! It seemed funny at the time. Then in the race, I took the lead - and he pushed me off the track after half a lap. So that was a good start!
Lauda was such a genius, he had everything, skill, intelligence, confidence, but Senna, he could got further, take the car even closer to the limit, adapt to the car and the track conditions like no other driver even did in the history of racing, maybe Jim Clark was like that. Prost was on that race, but his greatest ability in my opinion was to build a car with his team, so he always had a good car, he knew to make one. Yes with equal cars, Senna wins, but racing is not ONLY about driving on the limit, and we have to respect drivers like Fangio, Prost or Piquet, because they could build a car like no one else, they had the knowledge for that, they were smarter than any other driver on the grid, and specially in F1, building the car is even more important than driving it, because in F1, more than any other racing category, the best car ALWAYS wins. For me, Senna is the greatest driver of all time, with all my respect for Piquet, Fangio or Schumacher, well, i'm Brazilian, but it's not because of that, i just see Ayrton doing things that NO OTHER driver did.
@slicktires2011 : in races there is no "normal" line there is a circuit. There is a wide circuit used by all. Sorry but it was Alain Prost who pointed in the direction of Ayrton (at the right). Prost recognize him even now have "a share" of responsibility when he denied at the time, in 1989 !
@gourdonboy Take that with a grain of salt. Senna wasn't going to call himself the greatest ever, much as Schumacher named Senna greatest ever. It would be better to ask a driver who wouldn't seriously be considered and wasn't teamed with, or fierce rivals with, one of the greatest. Maybe someone like Eddie Cheever.
@claremorris89 you are right. if you look at the calendars and results of all the drivers in the '60s and '70s, you see all these non-championship races, formula 2 races, just about everything. now, there isn't a mention about anything like that anymore.
great performance of a quick driver, maybe the quickest ever. But better not count this race. The story goes that (since the did not do well in qualifying) Rosberg and Lauda agreed to jump the start. Rosberg started from 26th and was 3rd in the first corner! only Lauda started correctly and had a poor race. After the race Rosberg asked him "where have you been?", and Lauda replied "I had thought you were leading me on....". : ))
R.I.P Senna and Lauda. They are true legends.

Just have a look on the shape of the car to see that Byrne was already on a view of the next generation of F1, in aerodynamics with a high nose allowing to give more down force to the car and to its extractor. An improve design of Migeot & Postlethwaite for Tyrell
Senna was a hungry tiger. This initiative make all difference.
@weallfollowmanutd
Bollocks.
Lauda was always underrated champion.
Coz SENNA IS LEGEND
Coz Senna is dead he is a legend.
Senna was a living legend!
Dicky.
Only after he died, very few people really knew so much about him before that.
you obviously young or stupid.
Acid drop.
You are just stupid.
Senna - the true genius
@hlidskjalf666
...They were later banned because of it.
He's a great talent.
unfortunately the clip shown is the only footage of this race.
the full race is available from a Geman company I believe
@0:55 that's what you'd call the abso fuckin lute limit
Amazing
imagine if enzo had listened to that and took senna onboard.
Senna monstro.
Senna the great!
I would love a race like this in today’s f1
Couldn't resist that on! Apparently Jody Scheckter ended up with fastest lap - Reutemann though what an enigma.
Give Senna the slowest car and still get ready to see him overtake and win the race!!
look how much he won by !! Sure sign right there
Lauda was such a genius, he had everything, skill, intelligence, confidence, but Senna, he could got further, take the car even closer to the limit, adapt to the car and the track conditions like no other driver even did in the history of racing, maybe Jim Clark was like that.
Hah, I remember reading about this. Prost got pole, Senna got annoyed, Prost was in the lead during the race and they had a collision. As usual. xD
I never seen this footage. Thanks
I knew he was that fastest in whatever car he drive.
Maybe someone like Eddie Cheever.
thank you fittipaldi for representing us an artist
the best of the bet of the best....Senna...Brasil
@claremorris89
you are right. if you look at the calendars and results of all the drivers in the '60s and '70s, you see all these non-championship races, formula 2 races, just about everything. now, there isn't a mention about anything like that anymore.
in every car senna wins legend
great performance of a quick driver, maybe the quickest ever. : ))
he was a great man and an awesome driver, RIP Ayrton Senna
Senna Number One
Thanks for sharing :) Much appreciated !
Wow. The good ol' days...
