It's not stabilized, it doesn't shoot 4k, it doesn't have eye-AF and its high ISO limit is 3200. But it paid for my house.
I filmed a few documentaries with my trusty c100 Mark I. No one has ever questioned the quality of the image. It’s the perfect run and gun camera. I’m actually thinking about picking up a second on eBay, just to have matching cameras. I typically use an old trusty Canon DSLR as my second camera. So long as you know how to frame and light a scene, a 1080 image will work just fine.

Totally with you bro: I bought a C100MKII in 2015 and, guess what, a second copy in 2021 for interviews. This camera does everything I want and is eminently practical and easy to use. Rarely do I wish for 4K. For online delivery HD is good enough. I never worry about battery life. It has inbuilt ND filters. No overheating issues. The images look fantastic out of the box. XLR audio and quiet preamps. And its menu system is intuitive with a ton of assignable real buttons. Compare that to all the extra accessories I would need to build onto a mirrorless camera to get the same degree of utility, and how complex that gets.
I have used a c100 since 2015 and have gotten beautiful images. I have upgraded with others cameras since then, but I am having a hard time letting this work horse go. Shooting concerts with multicam setups, the c100 is great for long form content. Why compromise image quality on stage with gopros when a 6 year old camera has superior image quality and battery life with no 30 min recording limit? $1,000 is good bang for buck.

The c100 still feels like a good choice given everything I need is built in it requires far less gear to use.
Besides being a good back-up camera, it is my go-to when I'm live streaming on Zoom calls. The qualities fantastic, built-in ND filters, full-sized HDMI port, the battery life is excellent, the c100 a real Workhorse I believe it is a 4K sensor that down samples to 1080.
I have the C100 and use it for many projects. I shot broadcast commercials with it. As for not shooting 4K, I believe it is more important to use high-quality lenses which provide the best detail and color transmission. I also use an Atomos Ninja2 recorder with the C100 to get a bit better video and the ProRes codec. (The Ninja2 also has other video features that really help.) So the results are really good. One last thing, I use only 1-shot autofocus or manual focus with all my video cameras. I don't like continuous autofocus because the camera can wander off into no-no land, and then I am totally screwed. (You learn the hard way sometimes.) So I use the C100 to acquire focus, turn it off, and then reframe as I want.
I bought a Pentax K-X when they came out. It only does 720p. With ki lens it sucked for video. When I put an older Pentax f1.7 50mm prime lens from my grandfathers film camera on it it is amazing.
I've had one since about 2015, and still hang on to it as a workhorse. As well as 24/25/30p, you can set it to 50i/60i which means you can get slow motion with a bit of fudging in post - the end result is a bit softer but usable at a push

I'd love to know if it was hobbled in any way to protect the more expensive models

Good review! Just a minor correction note: you mentioned 1/4" connectors several times and the C100 doesn't have those, nor any other camera I can think of. You probably meant to say 1/8" / 3.5mm? 😎👍
Good video, but you miss the point of 4k shooting. I always output 1080p but filming in 4k gives me far more options in post for smooth zooming in/cropping, while keeping the resolution of 1080 with a doubled zoom in. This is like having a B camera built in to your current footage and is really useful for interesting edits. Your moiré test was not a real test BTW. You need much thinner stripes which are high contrast B&W, which need to be a certain distance from the sensor to confuse the pixels trying to capture the details. It's the sudden shift in light/dark that would show up as a step, like when you have overhead power lines against a white sky. The curve doesn't look smooth, more pixelated. With a pin stripe suit, moving around would make the lines disappear and appear like a flicker, depending on distance from sensor.
Still using here for my work for RAI, Italian national broadcaster. I deliver my videos in 50Mbit 4:2:2 and nobody ever questioned about picture quality :D

The C100 is 100% reliable, the picture quality is great, the file size is small... then I can't do a good slow-mo with it? Better. Too much slow-mo these days. All videos look the same. I think too many young people are obsessed by specs, codecs, bitrates... they spend too much on the very last equipment and then really don't know how to shoot and how to make money with it.

I’m considering a Black Magic pocket cinema, however I came across the c100 and a bit stuck with which to go for now I’ve read more about the c100. I’m looking for a more cinema focused camera however I’m as much interested in tech any using new equipment.

The majority of what I shoot is talking head, interviews, etc. I just bought a Canon C100 mki is the auto focus w/o the DPA usable? Eventually I’d like to upgrade to the DPA I just can’t right now.
It’s very useable, but it’s only one shot autofocus. There is no continuous autofocus without the update. So, for talking head, you can use one shot to get to the plane of focus where your subject will be, but will need to manual focus if anything/anyone is moving
Uploading a 2K file in 4K to TH-cam will give you superior quality on TH-cam. As you can see in this video, with almost no banding in the blue background.
@@JustinMyersPhoto And here I was thinking you knew how resolution works. The threshold to create a resolute image for *cinema viewing* is around 1.5K. After that higher resolutions only allow you to view the image on larger screens like IMAX. You can upscale from clean 1080p to 4K and view that in a cinema no problem. The difference between 1080p and 2K is by all means negligible. And both are roughly 2K in the horizontal. I was just using 2K because it's three less letters to type. Just like you can use 4K to describe UHD. It's an imperceptible nothing difference.
@@VariTimo as I said, if someone specifically needs 2K, it doesn’t have it. Again, as I mentioned in both video and comment, the 1080 works great for something like TH-cam. However, not all deliveries are based on your or my sensibilities alone. Some people may have a job that specifically requires the delivery of 2K from a shoot, as I said. And while you or I may say it is a negligible difference, that won’t cause the editing house, production company, etc. to change their minds about the format requirements. Kind of like in school, if a teach told you to use MLA format for a paper. You can use APA and say the difference is negligible, and you might not be wrong. That doesn’t change anything when the teacher doesn’t accept it because you submitted the wrong format
I'm looking at a mk1 . In the uk they go as low £500 without the DAF upgrade. My only hesitation is the lack of 50p. However for me as a learning tool there anything close in price that offers a propper cinema cera form factor and such amazing HD image.

Yes, if you aren’t buying from a reputable reseller, like MPB, who thoroughly tests their gear before selling it, then you very much need to thoroughly test any used gear before buying
I still use my c100 when I don’t need slow the footage in post. I’ve learnt so much using the c100, being 8bit it is less forgiving you need to get as much right in camera as possible. If someone is looking to turn a camera on and get a great image, this may not be the camera for you l, but if you enjoy working for your image and learning to expose correctly, it is still a great camera

@@JustinMyersPhoto they are all good and the c200 has amazing 8bit and 12bit raw video, but yes, there are times when I prefer to use the C100 and the image I can get from it. The mix of how the video looks, light weight, bit less intimidating than the C200, and the files are small makes it a good option for some work. I put a ninja v on and get 8bit uncompressed 422. It’s about getting the right tool for the job.
@@JustinMyersPhoto Mostly docs and interviews; C100 is excellent for both. Compact, modular, dual SD card relay recording, XLR inputs, and Super35 sensor keeps the package relevant in 2022. 4:2:2 color space is possible with an external recorder as well.
Ya, the difficulty of workflow compared to quality of slow motion isn’t worth it for me personally, but again I have other cameras that have great slow motion available

I transfer from SD card to hard drive in Finder on my MacBook. Then I just import into PremierePro when I’m editing like normal. If you’re using Finder on Mac, the steps are: When you open the card on your Mac, instead of going into DCIM, like you would for a mirrorless or DSLR camera, click on the “private” folder. Here, there should be something that looks like a file called “AVCHD”. Two finger click (or right click) on that and select “show package contents”. Then you should see a something that similarly looks like a file called “BDMV”. Same process to “show package contents”. Finally, you should come to several folders. The clips will be in the folder entitled “STREAM”. If you are using PC, it should be similar, but I think the folders show as folders rather than files. Not sure though. Hope that helps!

@@sorinmedia1 I primarily used the Sigma Art 24-70 f2.8, Sigma Art 24mm f1.4, and Canon 85mm f1.8. I do add some sharpening in post if I’m going for the super sharp commercial look
Well, I’m definitely not an expert at color grading. You need to make sure to get exposure and white balance pretty close while shooting because of the 8-bit files. For a simple workflow in post, you can just pull down shadows and then blacks until the blacks look right. Then raise highlights, then whites until the exposure gets where you want it. Then, you can bump the saturation a bit to your liking. There are some good C-Log grading tutorials here on TH-cam, although you definitely have to wade through people “teaching” you the method of buying their LUT packs instead of color grading
@@ashleyharter that’s very true, although, unless we’re just talking about correction LUTs, I think using LUTs at the beginning of learning to color grade is more of hindrance from learning to color grade than a help

Good comprehensive review - I own a C100 M2 and it's just a reliable workhorse that's hard not to love. I am feeling the 4k envy lately, and I really wish I had 4.2.2 10bit when grading, but I just can't justify the upgrade yet when most my stuff ends up on TH-cam and Vimeo. I'm personally not a big fan of Clog and find WideDR serves me and my workflow well. I doubt I'll sell my C100 when I upgrade because it's a great camera for long events or a safety camera - again, very reliable and very small and gradable files! Check out my review sometime.
Glad you liked it! Ya, I understand that about 4K and 10-bit 4:2:2. For me, I have the R6 for the situations where I need that flexibility and the C100 is for the longform stuff, which is primarily in more controlled lighting situations where the 1080 8-bit isn’t as big of an issue
@@JustinMyersPhoto You showed in your samples that if you properly expose you can get really nice results from this camera. Obviously more detail in 4k, but this camera has held up all these years because it's a 4k sensor downsizing to HD - hence, excellent HD quality! I don't think at this point I could go back to a mirrorless still camera for video because I've gotten addicted to the cooling fan, built-in audio, and ND FILTERS in the C100. Not completely sold on the C70 yet, but looking at my options. One thing I do in post is output at a slightly higher bitrate than what is "normal" for HD - instead of 10 Mbps I output at 20 Mbps - helps the artifacting in the shadows and overall detail without making the files too huge.
@@Sutterjack ya, I wouldn’t recommend the R6 to a primarily video shooter. I’m a hybrid shooter and photo is just as much of what I do as video, so for me the R6 is perfect for to have alongside the C100. I’m actually 100% sold on the C70 though. I love that camera and don’t really see any downsides for me, except that I’m not ready to drop that much money on it yet. What has you unconvinced on the C70?
@@JustinMyersPhoto C70 IQ and features are looking good overall but a few points I don't like. I really don't like lack of EVF (even optional one)- I use my C100 EVF a lot. Also I don't think you can adjust shutter speeds on the C70 which bugs me. Also I've read complaints that the display hinge is flimsy - not good as you have to use it a lot!. I need to rent one to check it out. The price also discourages me - lot of options for video when you're dropping $5500!
Okay gotcha, well I’m not sure who said that about not being able to change the shutter speed/angle on C70, but I remember being able to. The hinge was definitely a disappointing issue, but Canon has addressed it in the more recent versions and CPS is fixing it at no charge on the older versions. The lack of EVF is definitely going to be a polarizing thing. I do not use an EVF for video, even when it’s available, so it doesn’t bother me, personally. It is a hard thing for EVF users to lose though, so I definitely understand that complaint
Ya, although I think most people looking at bringing a cinema camera into their workflow should be capable of framing their shot correctly. If cropping in post is a big part of someone’s workflow, then yes they will need to pay for a camera with more resolution than they need for output
@@JustinMyersPhoto I think it also depends on the type of videos one is aming for. FE weeding, where there are always surprises, 4K and cropping may help. Anyway, I'm very close of getting a 100C, but more for broadcasting stuff (maybe for music videos, too) 🎩

Yes: get used to manual focusing as well as focus/recompose techniques. I think I mentioned in the video, but I definitely would not recommend a setup like this to anyone who isn’t very comfortable with manual focusing. The AF can be very helpful when needed, but is definitely not something that can be relied on for every shot with this camera

It has an hdmi port, so you could it use that way. However, for a webcam I would definitely suggest something with a more robust autofocus system. A mirrorless camera would probably be a better option. Is there a certain usage that you need a cinema camera to use for a webcam?

Thanks for video.. I'm thinking about this as a Bcam for event filming indoors.. concerts etc.. how do you think it would go with light with the 70-200mm f4 L Canon lens in terms of being too dark. Other alternative is 6dmkii.. thanks for any thoughts!

Looking to get a good camera to learn on and like to throw myself in at the deep end! :) Can't see that I'll need 4k but do want good HD so thinking of a C100 Mk 2 - so many good reviews! Only really looking to make videos for my tribute shows, and some live vocals in controlled conditions. May do some live band recording too.
This is actually the C100 Mark 1 that I’m using. Although, as I mentioned in the video, I definitely wouldn’t suggest this as a first camera

I haven’t uploaded any unedited footage from the camera for download. That’s something I can consider doing in the future but haven’t done yet
The majority of what I shoot is talking head, interviews, etc. I just bought a Canon C100 mki is the auto focus w/o the DPA usable? Eventually I’d like to upgrade to the DPA I just can’t right now.
It’s very useable, but it’s only one shot autofocus. There is no continuous autofocus without the update. So, for talking head, you can use one shot to get to the plane of focus where your subject will be, but will need to manual focus if anything/anyone is moving
Uploading a 2K file in 4K to TH-cam will give you superior quality on TH-cam. As you can see in this video, with almost no banding in the blue background.
Yes, although technically the C100 does 1080, not 2K, great for TH-cam, but if someone specifically needs 2K output, this doesn’t have it
@@JustinMyersPhoto And here I was thinking you knew how resolution works. The threshold to create a resolute image for *cinema viewing* is around 1.5K. After that higher resolutions only allow you to view the image on larger screens like IMAX. You can upscale from clean 1080p to 4K and view that in a cinema no problem. The difference between 1080p and 2K is by all means negligible. And both are roughly 2K in the horizontal. I was just using 2K because it's three less letters to type. Just like you can use 4K to describe UHD. It's an imperceptible nothing difference.
@@VariTimo as I said, if someone specifically needs 2K, it doesn’t have it. Again, as I mentioned in both video and comment, the 1080 works great for something like TH-cam. However, not all deliveries are based on your or my sensibilities alone. Some people may have a job that specifically requires the delivery of 2K from a shoot, as I said. And while you or I may say it is a negligible difference, that won’t cause the editing house, production company, etc. to change their minds about the format requirements.
Kind of like in school, if a teach told you to use MLA format for a paper. You can use APA and say the difference is negligible, and you might not be wrong. That doesn’t change anything when the teacher doesn’t accept it because you submitted the wrong format
I'm looking at a mk1 . In the uk they go as low £500 without the DAF upgrade. My only hesitation is the lack of 50p. However for me as a learning tool there anything close in price that offers a propper cinema cera form factor and such amazing HD image.
My only fear would be the condition of the camera, it's been a long time and buying a used camera is a lottery. There are so many things that may be failing or will fail soon.
Yes, if you aren’t buying from a reputable reseller, like MPB, who thoroughly tests their gear before selling it, then you very much need to thoroughly test any used gear before buying
I still use my c100 when I don’t need slow the footage in post. I’ve learnt so much using the c100, being 8bit it is less forgiving you need to get as much right in camera as possible. If someone is looking to turn a camera on and get a great image, this may not be the camera for you l, but if you enjoy working for your image and learning to expose correctly, it is still a great camera
Yes, I agree, it’s not a point and shoot and you need to understand how to use a cinema camera before stepping into something like this.

@@JustinMyersPhoto I was shooting weddings but covid has made that work unreliable over the last couple of years. I shoot some commercial and social media content. I have a c200 and R6 too but the image from the c100 has an organic/analogue quality to it I can’t seem to get in modern cameras. Great video btw, you got a sub 😊
@@mall2177 ya, I think a lot of us have shifted in the past couple years. That’s interesting, so you have the C200, but sometimes prefer the C100 image?
@@JustinMyersPhoto they are all good and the c200 has amazing 8bit and 12bit raw video, but yes, there are times when I prefer to use the C100 and the image I can get from it. The mix of how the video looks, light weight, bit less intimidating than the C200, and the files are small makes it a good option for some work. I put a ninja v on and get 8bit uncompressed 422. It’s about getting the right tool for the job.

@@JustinMyersPhoto Mostly docs and interviews; C100 is excellent for both. Compact, modular, dual SD card relay recording, XLR inputs, and Super35 sensor keeps the package relevant in 2022. 4:2:2 color space is possible with an external recorder as well.

You can slow down by using 50i at 180° optical flow and speed ramp around 60 or so. Watch out for the weird spheres.
Ya, the difficulty of workflow compared to quality of slow motion isn’t worth it for me personally, but again I have other cameras that have great slow motion available

what program do you use to import the video?
I transfer from SD card to hard drive in Finder on my MacBook. Then I just import into PremierePro when I’m editing like normal. If you’re using Finder on Mac, the steps are:
When you open the card on your Mac, instead of going into DCIM, like you would for a mirrorless or DSLR camera, click on the “private” folder.
Here, there should be something that looks like a file called “AVCHD”. Two finger click (or right click) on that and select “show package contents”.
Then you should see a something that similarly looks like a file called “BDMV”. Same process to “show package contents”.
Finally, you should come to several folders. The clips will be in the folder entitled “STREAM”.
If you are using PC, it should be similar, but I think the folders show as folders rather than files. Not sure though.

It’s actually the original C100, but yes all the footage in the video was filmed with the C100

@@sorinmedia1 I primarily used the Sigma Art 24-70 f2.8, Sigma Art 24mm f1.4, and Canon 85mm f1.8. I do add some sharpening in post if I’m going for the super sharp commercial look

Any tips on grading c-log? I haven't figured all that out... Pretty much using WDR
Well, I’m definitely not an expert at color grading. You need to make sure to get exposure and white balance pretty close while shooting because of the 8-bit files.
For a simple workflow in post, you can just pull down shadows and then blacks until the blacks look right. Then raise highlights, then whites until the exposure gets where you want it. Then, you can bump the saturation a bit to your liking.
There are some good C-Log grading tutorials here on TH-cam, although you definitely have to wade through people “teaching” you the method of buying their LUT packs instead of color grading

There are alot of clog luts out there you can download which can give you a good start point
@@ashleyharter that’s very true, although, unless we’re just talking about correction LUTs, I think using LUTs at the beginning of learning to color grade is more of hindrance from learning to color grade than a help

Good comprehensive review - I own a C100 M2 and it's just a reliable workhorse that's hard not to love. I am feeling the 4k envy lately, and I really wish I had 4.2.2 10bit when grading, but I just can't justify the upgrade yet when most my stuff ends up on TH-cam and Vimeo. I'm personally not a big fan of Clog and find WideDR serves me and my workflow well. I doubt I'll sell my C100 when I upgrade because it's a great camera for long events or a safety camera - again, very reliable and very small and gradable files! Check out my review sometime.
Glad you liked it! Ya, I understand that about 4K and 10-bit 4:2:2. For me, I have the R6 for the situations where I need that flexibility and the C100 is for the longform stuff, which is primarily in more controlled lighting situations where the 1080 8-bit isn’t as big of an issue
@@JustinMyersPhoto You showed in your samples that if you properly expose you can get really nice results from this camera. Obviously more detail in 4k, but this camera has held up all these years because it's a 4k sensor downsizing to HD - hence, excellent HD quality! I don't think at this point I could go back to a mirrorless still camera for video because I've gotten addicted to the cooling fan, built-in audio, and ND FILTERS in the C100. Not completely sold on the C70 yet, but looking at my options. One thing I do in post is output at a slightly higher bitrate than what is "normal" for HD - instead of 10 Mbps I output at 20 Mbps - helps the artifacting in the shadows and overall detail without making the files too huge.
@@Sutterjack ya, I wouldn’t recommend the R6 to a primarily video shooter. I’m a hybrid shooter and photo is just as much of what I do as video, so for me the R6 is perfect for to have alongside the C100.
I’m actually 100% sold on the C70 though. I love that camera and don’t really see any downsides for me, except that I’m not ready to drop that much money on it yet.
What has you unconvinced on the C70?
@@JustinMyersPhoto C70 IQ and features are looking good overall but a few points I don't like. I really don't like lack of EVF (even optional one)- I use my C100 EVF a lot. Also I don't think you can adjust shutter speeds on the C70 which bugs me. Also I've read complaints that the display hinge is flimsy - not good as you have to use it a lot!. I need to rent one to check it out. The price also discourages me - lot of options for video when you're dropping $5500!
Okay gotcha, well I’m not sure who said that about not being able to change the shutter speed/angle on C70, but I remember being able to. The hinge was definitely a disappointing issue, but Canon has addressed it in the more recent versions and CPS is fixing it at no charge on the older versions.
The lack of EVF is definitely going to be a polarizing thing. I do not use an EVF for video, even when it’s available, so it doesn’t bother me, personally. It is a hard thing for EVF users to lose though, so I definitely understand that complaint
There is one big advantage with 4K: Zoom-in in post-processing 🎩
Ya, although I think most people looking at bringing a cinema camera into their workflow should be capable of framing their shot correctly. If cropping in post is a big part of someone’s workflow, then yes they will need to pay for a camera with more resolution than they need for output
@@JustinMyersPhoto I think it also depends on the type of videos one is aming for. FE weeding, where there are always surprises, 4K and cropping may help. Anyway, I'm very close of getting a 100C, but more for broadcasting stuff (maybe for music videos, too)

I would be worried about the center-of-frame-only autofocus vs. adhering to the rule-of-thirds axiom for narrative video. Any advice?
Yes: get used to manual focusing as well as focus/recompose techniques. I think I mentioned in the video, but I definitely would not recommend a setup like this to anyone who isn’t very comfortable with manual focusing. The AF can be very helpful when needed, but is definitely not something that can be relied on for every shot with this camera

@@oldrogue4247 it very much depends on what and how you are shooting. But for me, yes. I use the C100 primarily for talking head / interview shots, with only occasional B-Roll shots. Typically for anything other than sit down interviews, I grab my mirrorless cameras

It has an hdmi port, so you could it use that way. However, for a webcam I would definitely suggest something with a more robust autofocus system. A mirrorless camera would probably be a better option. Is there a certain usage that you need a cinema camera to use for a webcam?
