It astounds me that Canon never did a C100 Mark III. They nailed the design and ergonomics right out the gate for the C line.
It would be interesting to see them bring it back with an rf mount instead
I wound trade in my R5C in a heart beat. I used my C100 with a ninja star for years. Really mis the ergonomics
ever since i got my c100mk2 i have been waiting for it but never happend so got into panasonic and blackmagic cameras now
They've decided to change the approach and the C70 was born. Although it didn't have the same modularity, since they've decided to go to a unibody design, the C70 checks almost every mark that the C100 line up did, but in a modern way.
@@BrunoMassao Heavily disagree. The c100 mk2 was a near perfect camera in terms of useability, power usage, ergonomics, and picture quality. C70 was a huge step backwards in every direction but codex.
Just about everyday, i miss my c100mk2.
This just proves that camera bodies become obsolete with each generation, whereas quality glass retains much more value and years of usage. In this industry the rule to live by is: “Date the bodies….Marry the lenses”
And then they change the mount…
@@ireinbv5309 you must be talking about Canon with the RF mount. Nikon has had the same mount since the 1950’s and Sony E-mount works for everything Sony. Not to mention the fact that if I love a piece of glass that much, I’ll get an adapter so that I can still use my old glass on your new mount. However, what I can’t get around is old technology that obsolete (poor ISO, Poor Autofocus, 8 bit color). As a full time professional in this business, it’s all about making profit. Since 2017 when I started One lens (24-70 F/2.8) that I paid $2300 has paid for itself to the tune of hundreds of thousands. Now ask me how many times I’ve changed camera bodies since 2017?
I'm not even planning on buying this camera, I just really enjoy watching your videos! Super chill, down-to-earth delivery while informative and creative!
Thanks for the kind words, this made my morning
@@jakehayden998 glad to hear it!!
I still have mine and use as an overglorified TEAMS/ZOOM webcam with bokeh and AF.
that's wild ahhaha
Did this have AF? No dual pixel AF I guess?
@@mipmipmipmipmip Not originally. It was an option upgrade down the line for $500, dual-pixel AF. Mailed it to a Canon Service center to get it done.
I have 4 of the mark ii and I use them and my C300s almost exclusively for live streamed events. Image quality online is incredible for the price
I've used it until last day, and regretted immediately selling it. Best ergonomics in a camera ever. My first cinema camera crush ❤.
I've shot so much stuff on this camera over the years, it will always hold a special place in my heart.
Agreed. Bought the C100 Mark 2 for smaller projects this year and have been blown away.
It is really awesome. What kind of projects do you shoot?
it was an amazing camera. I shot so much amazing content with it. I miss mine, but also very happy that I've moved forward to the Sony FX6 and FX3
C100MKII never failed me, not once. Never a corrupted card or overheating. Plus I love the slow shutter option for timelapses and fine shutter adjustment to dial in screens eliminating all possible flicker.
I've probably put more hours into this and the mkII than any other cameras. It's pretty incredible, I still use it for some paying jobs and for my own stuff. I agree with your assessment of the camera body freeing up your mind to be creative cause you don't need a bunch of extra kit, I love how you can just grab and go with this body and a lens. Great review!
that was so much fun to shoot with the c100 back in the days.
still has the best 1080p footage to date! the sensor what stunningly good!
The simplicity, yet feature packed design of this camera is beautiful and it angers me. So many features in this camera that are becoming deprived in modern day camera releases. Not sure why we're removing things, like full size XLR and ND, but it's killing me.
I really enjoyed to work with the C100 and in fact preferred it compared to the C200 in many aspects.
man, i think the crunchy constrast on the blacks happens because you put rec709 on gamma output, but for majority of monitors today we use 2.4 gamma, that is kind of a bit flat contrast gamma, but is okay and the media standard nowadays
Gotta get that OWLCOLOR picture profile to take it over the edge! 😉😉
I did❤
I loved mine. It does what you need it to do.
It really is amazing how easy it is to use. I liked it a lot more than I thought I would
I have one, is really good.
XLR input, big batteries, internal ND filter and bunch of buttons are all great
The file sizes are super small but at the cost of flexibility in post
It has some problems, the size is hard for gimbals and some tripods
Having to turn off the camera to go to gallery and turning off again to record and waiting for it to boot up is very inconvenient
I scored a c300 MKI for like $320 plus shipping and fees. I love it a LOT. I want to get a C100MKii but I'm happy with what I have for now.
I loved the c100 Mark II. But 3 of the 3 I bought used were broken in some way. I loved it though.
Almost bought the C100 in 2013 but then decided to get the Canon 1Dc. Like the colour and look of the original clog.
Just watch that ND filter knob. I have an entire shoot with it having not quite seated out and once I got to post noticed there’s a shadow in my top left
I always wanted to get one and will probably get it at the right price.
At the moment I’m playing with a Blackmagic camera that was released about a year after c100: the Production 4K. I find it to be almost exact opposite of this camera. The body is a bit awkward and minimalist in features but the codecs could not be more robust. Any flavour of ProRes in 4K or 1080p or CinemaDNG RAW in 4000x2160. It has some quirks like the “black hole sun” and a useless built in battery but the image over all is to my eye stunning. I wonder what you would make of it.
one of the best camera you can purchase, I still have 3 of them
Good summary of the C100 M1 but definitely buy the M2! If Canon had kept this body with 4k 422 10bit internal they would have sold a million of them. I'm still part of the C100 M2 cult, though recently upgraded to C70 - I still love this camera as a safety cam and for time lapse - it's just so reliable, with tiny gradable files, great cine features, great battery life it's hard not to like this proven workhorse.
I love this cam so much that I bought 3 in total. Coming from 5dii this is a huge improvement
Yeah it would be a big bump up from the 5d. What kind of lenses are you using?
I have this camera tbh my Sony a6500 blows it out of the water .
Why did canon just seem to stop after the c70? They were on a roll with their c line.
Worth remembering that if you added a Atomos Ninja 2 you could get a 4:2:2 image essentially turning the C100
Into a C300 for way less money. Glory days.
Beside the recording features, what is the differences between the c100 and c300 ?
@@carminedepaola8018 300 has 60p in 720, SDI and genlock and the body is a bit larger.
@@carminedepaola8018 24Mbps vs 50Mbps, SD vs CF cards, 4:2:0 vs 4:2:2 internal ...
@@MeetupvideoUK with an external recorder there is any difference?
you're still only getting an 8 bit 4:2:0 file...just wrapped in a 10 bit wrapper...the C100 and C100mkii only output 8 bit 4:2:0 data via HDMI...I have 3 Canon C100mkiis and use a Ninja Blade with one when shooting
still use it. with the c300iii and the c70
How would you grade te autofocus performance?
I still have mine from when I bought it after the first price drop.
I still don't know why they have that funky progressive wrapped in interlace - If you bring progressive clips into an editing programme it usually reads as interlaced and drops the resolution unless you tell it that it's progressive.
I'm surprised how well it upscales, and I'd love to know if it's really capable of more than the official specs if it was Magic Lanterned
That’s pretty interesting to think about. I never considered what third-party software could do with the C100
@@jakehayden998 I seem to remember a post saying they were warned off the cinema line by Canon.
Obviously the C100 has a lot of things that ML brought anyway, zebras, peaking etc. but I can't help wondering if it could really record 4K if pushed (even if it was limited duration)
What's the lens attached to C100 ?
Best camera! I still have one ;)
I am almost forget this camera
Ok, question I keep asking myself. What would you rather buy for roughly $500? GH5 (10bit) or c100 (xlr, ND, long battery)
wondering the exact same thing!
What a timely question, next week’s review is on the GH5 actually!
I know this is a really annoying answer but it depends on what you are going to use it for. If you’re shooting documentary and need the simplest setup possible then the C100 is hard to beat. If you want stronger resolution and codec selection and portability, it’s the GH5. If I had to start fresh right now I would probably do a C100, but that’s super specific to the kind of work I do (TH-cam, doc, etc)
@@jakehayden998 haha that's awesome! Love your camera reviews so I will be watching. Also, that's an interesting take. Currently own a gh5 that doesn't get much love cuz been using my x-s20 a lot more but been hanging on to it for possible podcast/production scenarios.
I had both and I must say the GH5 Videostuff in the body of the C100 and I would be totally satisfied
C100 for long format recordings, like conferences (XLR required in pro environment). MILC for creative and short stuff.
I still use it
I have that camera and I love it, I just wish it was a bit lighter, hand holding kills me, and brining a monopod is very annoying
Right but what about the dragon masters episode?
That’s coming this summer, hold your horses 🐴
I used the C100 for a short film a few months, and the image quality is just not there for me. Just to name a few gripes I had with it:
1- The evf is subpar.
2- The lcd screen is hard to see in broad daylight.
3- The files are not flexible and break apart if you want to do anything more than just a simple grade.
4- The image is soft. Too soft, in fact. Sharpening the footage ends up looking crunchy if you don’t get it right.
I’d pick up a GH5 for around the same price and have a more flexible camera that will look goof for years to come. The C100 had its place, but it’s long been superseded by better, more practical cameras.
I agree the image is certainly starting to show its age. What kind of lenses did you shoot on for your short?
@@jakehayden998 I used a Rokinon/Samyang set of f/1.4s, the Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 and the Canon 24-105mm f/4 MKII.
I know the Rokinons aren’t the sharpest of the bunch, but I was shooting stopped down (mainly for focus accuracy) and it still was quite soft.
The only lens that I enjoyed was the 24-105mm because it had IS and it worked pretty well for some of the handheld shots we did.
Canon needs a C70 update.
"you can find it as low as 500$". Yes good luck with this
The EVF was panned on it's original launch, so has always been considered as rubbish.
If They make C100 Mkiii with a 4,5k internal, +4 stops of nd, one more screw on the top handle and internal 10bit 422 I dare any aspiring filmmaker who would look around for other camera
almost C300 mk2 :) except 4.5k
@@MeetupvideoUK yeah, to be fair 4k is already good enough but canon likes to do downsampling resolution so… Even EOS R7 has 4k fine (downscaling from 8k)
Great camera but it was too tall for effective rigging
*JUST GET THE MK II*
Trust Me 😊
Still using it everyday and continue to make money from it.
take this camera + topaz and you got a pretty decent camera...
24 mbs seriosly? looks like crap in 2024
You should judge the images, not just the bitrate...
