    Losing your sense of taste is a terrible thing to happen to a food content creator. It’s really interesting and inspiring how you’ve managed to pivot during the last few episodes and still make content. Hope everything is back to normal for you soon!

    Flameless ration heaters don't contain any chemicals the way we'd typically think. In reality, they're more like disposable hand warmers. Hand warmers use a mix of ingredients along with iron powder. When exposed to air, the other ingredients help the iron oxidize (or rust) very quickly, which releases noticeable heat. Normally when things rust the heat is spread out over a very long time and is imperceptible. Flameless ration heaters take the same principle up a notch by using magnesium powder. When water is added to the powder in the presence of the surrounding air, another fast and even hotter oxidation reaction takes place.

    Don't despair Emmy. You're taste and smell will come back. It may not be the same but it'll come back. I'd go out to a candle shop, some place with lots of variety in scents and just smell them to get that olfactory sense going. Then taste really strong tastes daily. Like eat 90 percent cacao, super flavor filled dishes you're used to eating essentially to get the taste buds going. Your body will remember how to do what it's supposed to. I doubt you've suffered some true genetic mutation. Even damaged tastebuds heal. Smokers report having taste come back after quitting smoking so think of it like that.

I imagine texture would be a really big part of enjoying food if you're born without a sense of taste, or lost it. It would be cool to see cooking approached from that direction.

    I'll bet the guys who designed the package had "rock or something nonflammable" in mind. but it was omitted somehow and never corrected. Thanks, hope you get back to normal soon (dealing with allergy loss of smell, I think, myself).

    The one thing you can smell should be the chemical reaction in that FRH. That is a smell you never forget. Also the smell of the heating tabs in the heaters in Russian rations. If you get a dud heater again add the salt pack in your accessories pack in the heater and it should activate the heater pad.

    I had covid in june of 2022, pepsi still taste like lavender soap smells….I taste less of allot of things. Less flavor from things the alium family. Less of things like tuna. Cheeses. I am glad I smell some, but as a foodie. I am so depressed about it.

    Emmy! Please boil your entrees when the hot packs are a dud. I feel so bad for you eating them cold, but people usually boil them if they can because it's more even. The packs are even meant to be boiled. I would compare the hot pack to microwaving something and boiling to oven cooking something.

    • @typhoneonly
      @typhoneonly ปีที่แล้ว

      Soldiers in the field will boil them if they have the time and the means, ration heat them if they don't have the ability to boil water, or don't have water to spare (and eat them cold if the heater didn't work). It doesn't even have to be particularly clean water, because you're just heating the package, not consuming the water. I would bet that more often than not, when used in the field, they are boiled. I'd love to see you retry some old recipes after boiling them for about 5 minutes, they turn out much better! Totally different textures and even heating.

    I lost my taste after chemo treatments took about 3-6 months. The only think I could taste was frozen grapes, chocolate peanut butter ice cream, and chicken dumplings from Bob Evans. Everything else tasted like crap. Not fun dealing with that at all. Hope you get that back soon.

    In Singapore, you can buy coffee at the coffeeshops served in a plastic bag with a string for a handle, and yes, they do drink it with a straw, which I imagine is hard without burning yourself. Might be common other places in Asia too. It still seems really impractical, because you can't put it down, sure you can usually find somewhere to hang it in the car, but what if you're out and about and you sit down to take a break? This thing doesn't even have a handle, so I suppose you're meant to drink it right away, and they didn't provide a straw in the kit... No idea how you're supposed to drink it, unless you let it get cold first and just pour it down your throat. But you'd have to hold it the entire time. I imagine everybody just pours it into their cup, and the bag is only for emergencies, when you've lost your cup for some reason.

    Fun Fact: The Oralfactory bulb at the top of the sinuses? is actually part of the brain and the only part that lies beyond the 'blood brain barrier'. Its also subject to serious issues with bacteria and viruses attacking it constantly. It is the only part of the brain that is known to heal after injury. As you age, it takes longer to recover so for kids its a month, for middle age its 3 months, upper range is 6 months, if its really bad 18 months.
