    Losing your sense of taste is a terrible thing to happen to a food content creator. It’s really interesting and inspiring how you’ve managed to pivot during the last few episodes and still make content. Hope everything is back to normal for you soon!

    I lost my senses of taste and smell for about 3 months. Then the phantom cigarette smell creeped in for a while. Now 6 months later I am a "super taster"... I can test the packaging the food is stored in, the metal its cooked in... Sometimes even the type of storage it was contained in. Its is sometimes awful. I really hope your senses come back to normal ! Absolutely love the channel.

    Flameless ration heaters don't contain any chemicals the way we'd typically think. In reality, they're more like disposable hand warmers. Hand warmers use a mix of ingredients along with iron powder. When exposed to air, the other ingredients help the iron oxidize (or rust) very quickly, which releases noticeable heat. Normally when things rust the heat is spread out over a very long time and is imperceptible. Flameless ration heaters take the same principle up a notch by using magnesium powder. When water is added to the powder in the presence of the surrounding air, another fast and even hotter oxidation reaction takes place.

    Don't despair Emmy. You're taste and smell will come back. It may not be the same but it'll come back. I'd go out to a candle shop, some place with lots of variety in scents and just smell them to get that olfactory sense going. Then taste really strong tastes daily. Like eat 90 percent cacao, super flavor filled dishes you're used to eating essentially to get the taste buds going. Your body will remember how to do what it's supposed to. I doubt you've suffered some true genetic mutation. Even damaged tastebuds heal. Smokers report having taste come back after quitting smoking so think of it like that.

    I wonder if, as your sense of smell/taste slowly come back, you could try some recipes that are specifically catered towards people who can't taste and are mostly texture focused? Its also subject to serious issues with bacteria and viruses attacking it constantly. It is the only part of the brain that is known to heal after injury. As you age, it takes longer to recover so for kids its a month, for middle age its 3 months, upper range is 6 months, if its really bad 18 months.

    I tested positive a week ago Thursday and noticed taste was off and smell was completely gone. Watched a few videos and decided to give this a try. 2 cups water, one cup Apple cider vinegar, one teaspoon Cayenne pepper. Heat to boiling in a large pot. I took this large pot and headed to my recliner, put a blanket in my lap and set the pot down. Threw another blanket over the back of the chair and over my head, and spent 15 to 20 minutes in this steamy little tent, alternating deep breaths through nose, then mouth. Directly before doing this I could smell ZERO. Not peppermint essential oil, not coffee, nothing! After my 1st 20 minutes doing this I went back and tested and could smell those things again, maybe only slightly, but it was an improvement for sure. I've done this a few more times since then and my smell has pretty much come back to normal, and taste is improving as well. Definitely you should give it a try!

    When my Mom had COVID in the early days before loss of taste was known to be a symptom, when she was getting better I was making her simple thai peanut noodles with chicken.. and I usually put a little siracha in to give it a bite.. Mom kept begging for more and more to the point I was dying with my own bowlful being so spicy!!

    • @leeannjohnson1808
      @leeannjohnson1808 ปีที่แล้ว

      Why not just add the sauce to your moms bowl separately? I share a house with someone who can't handle spicy food, so I add Texas Pete to my own bowl, not the entire pot.

    • @Gemblackcat
      @Gemblackcat ปีที่แล้ว

      @@leeannjohnson1808 Yup, that would have been SMART. But I was tired and run down from caring for my Mom and also.. I thought I would add TOO much if I just added it to her bowl.. I'm not claiming I was the most brilliant with it..

    So glad you're getting some smell back, that's my biggest fear, since I've had it happen with colds a few times. It's when I experiment with foods where I love the texture but hate the taste, like bell peppers.
    I like watching Paul Harrell's MRE and camp food reviews, he always goes hunting for the "do not eat"s, sometimes there are two of them :)

I had him try your honey you sent. He loves its flavor and asks what your bees have access to gather? He wants to plant more things to vary his bees flavor of honey.

    From what I have heard about many MREs, losing your sense of taste is probably the best way to consume them. Especially the US veggie omelet; I hear losing your sense of taste would be a blessing if you get issued those.

    The good news is if your sense of smell is coming back It will more than likely return to normal but it's going to take time because your nerve endings have to regenerate in your nose. it'll just take time but you'll notice your sense of smell gradually returning

    Also when you have an older MRE the ration heaters do not work properly, so use the salt packet with the water and it will help jump start the FRH.

    Since having Covid the antibacterial bar soap I've used for years suddenly smells insanely strong & for some reason has an almost fishy smell but only when I use it to wash my hands. I've asked my son if he notices an odd smell & he thinks I'm crazy. My best friend was 50% luck 50% unlucky, she lost her sense of smell for all bathroom smells which I think is a blessing but also cinnamon, unfortunately cinnamon is her absolutely favorite flavor & smell for sweets.

    It took my husband and I almost 2 weeks to fully get our taste back, my daughter never really lost hers but it was confused for example she thought my cherry coke tastes like sprite. Overall it took a full month to get over the residual cough and fatigue. Months later we still have lingering long haulers symptoms. It sucks. Hope your taste comes back asap. ❤

    For the heater you may have not had enough water . I always filled to the bottom line. Also if the fold at the top isn't sealed enough it will not heat

  • @ronman33
    @ronman33 ปีที่แล้ว

    Everybody uses the hot beverage bag wrong. You're not meant to put the drink in there with hot water. You're supposed to fill it up to your desired amount, and then stick it in with the ration heater and your entree to heat the water. Then you pour it out into your mug and add your coffee. Another great video and I'm glad you're feeling better! Mountain house granola is one of my favorite camping breakfasts. You are 100% correct,, a bit of warmer water, not necessarily boiling, and let it sit for 5 or 10 minutes and you have this wonderful blueberry flavored milk with the berries and soft granola and the whole thing just tastes so decadent it's ridiculous. When an frh fails, don't be afraid to just drop the package in a pot of boiling water for 10 minutes. I find that actually took some way better and they're made to work that way.

    The one thing you can smell should be the chemical reaction in that FRH. That is a smell you never forget. Also the smell of the heating tabs in the heaters in Russian rations. If you get a dud heater again add the salt pack in your accessories pack in the heater and it should activate the heater pad.

    Just a thought....I don't think your supposed to put the food bag inside the heater bag anymore. It seems like the newer MRE's (maybe just the US ones) give you the insulated pouch, and maybe they intend for the food bag to be side by side with the heater bag inside that pouch. Maybe the food bag was stopping the water from distributing to the chemical (waffle part) and that's why it didn't get fully hot?
