My husband is in the French Army, and he knows those. 1 : never eating it cold (or in really extreme conditions). Well... Those rations constipates every person eating them. 3 : that cheese was horrible before they changed it. They never ate it, and more often than not, was thrown away or.. used as exercise grenades. And do NOT put that in fire : it explodes ! (and causes terrible burns) That said, my husband told me the one you have ? Not the worst one ;)
It's my understanding that the French rations are a result of lessons learned during the Napoleonic wars. Basically the idea being that better food equals better morale and better results in the field. So the French army goes to great lengths to make sure their people eat well, even if the food doesn't have the same shelf life compared to other rations.
It makes perfect sense. If your soldiers have low morale than they are going to have low energy and not do well in a battle. The higher the morale the more they're willing to follow leadership and feel they have cause. Anyone who has ever had any dealings with the military lifestyle can tell you this.
Well do not forget that the main religious and philosophical trend in France for several centuries is cooking 😂 About Napoléon you are perfectly right! Regards from France

The US ration are horrible , realy "junk food" (i think the badest of the world...), the ratio is more 5 US rations for 1 French ration...Even the russian rations are much better than US rations...
Missed opportunity: making a s’more with the nougat, chocolate biscuit, and chocolate bar. Extra points if she can figure out how to do it on that mini stove
Oh no... Noigat would not really be good in this. It's heavily honey based and is not really the texture of nougat you see in chocolate bars. Rather, melt the chocolate and crumble up the biscuits to make cake ;)
I’m just annoyed that she didn’t correctly consume the ‘cup a soup’ since it should be poured into a cup and filled with lots of cold boiling water (hot, just off the boil) and Emmy only added a tiny bit of water, which is why the consistency was ‘gluey’ according to Emmy. I hope she adds more water next time and pours it into a cup, it’s a drinkable soup and should not be in a bowl with a spoon.
@@Kimdah_ I see what you're saying, but a big reason she puts some of those foods into bowls is so we, the viewers, can better see the actual product. As for the amount of water she added, I didn't catch if she added the amount recommended on the package or just sort of winged it, but it definitely could have used more.
I actually keep 1 or 2 RCIR rations in my cupboard as emergency food stocks. They are solid, tasty and hearty rations and made with quality and flavour in mind. Absolutely worth double what I’d pay for any other ration pack. The reason they are so good, of course, is because french food is generally so good and so you can’t feed the French substandard food - they need a taste of home!
It's funny how as a french high school student I ate a very similar breakfast as the army ration one every morning. Muesli and coffee at home and pate de fruit and cereal bars in the bus. All of the products in the video really are authentic french ones 😄
In US rations its typically a very small roll of "sanitary tissue" or TP in a brown paper package. Its basically enough TP for one trip to the restroom. But thats in an individual ration (single meal) vs a full day ration like reviewed here. And you get one with every meal. Its not resealing but most US rations do include a plastic bag for trash or to use to waterproof leftovers. This ration seems more like a general tissue, meaning sanitary (bathroom) and other purpose combined.
Loved this video Emmy! I just graduated United States Marine Corps bootcamp and for the past 3 months I couldn’t wait to watch one of your videos. How fitting it’s a MRE! ✨

"It's like Handy Snacks" Prepackaged foods were mostly a not going to find here in my home growing up but of course seeing all of our friends get them we would beg for Handy Snacks, Hostess cakes & Dunkaroo's. I remember being at the store with my mom when I was about 10 & had some birthday $ & bought a 4 pack of Handy Snacks so excited that I'd get to take them in my lunch. The next day I excitedly cracked into one & was anticipating a flaky buttery cracker like Ritz & a silky cheddar flavored cheese so was a bit surprised when the little red spreader almost bent when I tried scooping the cheese & felt a grainy texture. I spread it on the cracker that I could feel was very hard but still excited I took my first bite & while I had been expecting to hear angels singing what I didn't expect was to freeze with an overwhelming urge to spit it out. They were awful & I was so confused as to why all my friends loved them. I was raised to never waste food & I'd spent my $ on this so I managed to eat the entire thing relieved it was done but then remembering I had 3 more at home. What I also had 3 more of at home were siblings. I decided to very generously gift them each one for the next day & hoped maybe they would like them. I didn't get any complaints or poundings from my two older siblings but I did notice that they never once asked for Handy Snack again. We still never gave up on the desert cakes & did get them one time because my mother got a free box with coupon. For some reason we loved those.
Ok, after your reaction to how the tissue packet opened (which is how they do in the UK too), I’m really interested in how tissue packs work in the US…
i love this woman, she is so positive about everything but IN A POSITIVE WAY if that makes sense, its not toxic positivity, its genuine and very healthy, soothing...
Fair trade coffee in a ration, that’s great! It’s fun for me as an American who’s been living in France for most of my adult life to finally see a French ration! The tuna would be the appetizer and the cheese would follow the main course before desert. 😄
It's true though, without morale your army won't succeed. You have to take care of your people if you want your people to take care of you. As far as Napoleon's strategic thinking, I can't really say much on that. LOL
To this day, instant coffee reminds me of my paternal grandmother. She only drank 1 cup per day, and she said it was a waste to make a percolator for just 1 cup. She saved real coffee for when she had company. We love to camp, but my husband hates instant and always brews real coffee. I can only smell it all, because I’m allergic to coffee, but I love smelling coffee, funny how Starbucks doesn’t smell like coffee!
I absolutely hate the taste of coffee. I'm a tea drinker through and through, while my husband is a coffee drinker. I freaking love the smell of coffee, but not the taste, so I often steal his mug to sniff.

Emmy, on a slightly off topic note, your dress is lovely, is that flour sack cotton with quilted accents? (or maybe linen/ cotton gauze blend? My eyes ain't what they used to be, as my son can attest!) I do sewing to help me with essential tremor, and I have to say cotton and natural fibers are amazing. P.S. Always wonderful to see your take on these exotic rations.
I think you're right, it looks like flour sack cotton! I'm currently sewing a cotton double gauze shirt that has a similar texture but it's much more sheer than Emmy's. The pieced squares are fantastic, I'm going to steal this idea for my next sewing project.😁
hey, I actually have this exact outfit and it’s a top from Madewell! It’s their patchwork square-neck top, and according to the tag it is a cotton gauze blend :)
Sadly I struggle with quilting - could never get it right in my textile design course! Just wanted to say what a lovely, wholesome comment this is. Put a smile on my face...all the best!
Aaaawn, at 2:59, the way you say "rillette de thon" is absolutly too cute ! sound like "rwillette di son" ! . . [the -e in "de" is more like the -u in "dust", & in french the "h" is mainly mute so : th = t , but... we have a lot of exception... a lot of exception about everything X') )
As complicated as French orthography is, at least you can always pronounce unfamiliar words as long as you know the rules. In English, you can’t be 100% sure of the pronunciation of an unfamiliar word without looking it up.
@@EnigmaticLucas I was going to say the same. English rules are hard enough for native English speakers to learn....imagine how difficult it must be for non-native English speakers!!! We have to take English class in all 12 years of school and there are still people who get it all wrong!!!!! 😂
@@EnigmaticLucas Not always, in french, the pronunciation can depend if it was a latin word, greek word, etc.... (and some "corruption" or over-correction of the word, like foetus = fetus, but the "oe" is an over-corruption), In some words, "-tion" = "-sion" but in other it can be "T - ion", we have a lot of little exception like that :') But i admit French is much easier in his/is pronunciation than English. I still don't know how to say correctly "Through" or "rough"
@@melissadunton3534 And french is hard enough for french :") ! Actually the pronunciation is the most awkard for French people, because you have some "sound" and "accentuation" we don't use, or we don't even conceptualise as a sound (like the letter "h", that why it's really hard for us to say it when we talk in english)
Crazy how other countries give their soldiers actual meals meanwhile we give them glorified lunchables and what’s essentially high school cafeteria food
The Swiss army doesn’t even have rations; all food is cooked fresh. (Of course, it’s an army that hasn’t seen combat in 600 years, but practices diligently nonetheless!)
I mean we actually fight so I imagine most of the money goes to the guns. No shade to France but they’re much more peaceful more money to spend on food.
@@noodletongs2664 now yes but france is the country with the most battle won. And i don't know if they still have soldier deployed but France is the 3rd country selling the most weapons in the world so not that peaceful.
Hey, glad you enjoyed it :) My two main takeaways from trying French rations out are a) the food is tasty, and b) esbit fuel smells like a fish fell into a chemical fire. --Alex
That's why we all use other means of heating it 😁 esbit fuel is disgusting and most us bring a stove on the field. If we have enough time, we also use a "gamelle" (some kind of pan) it's way better that way ! A few years ago, we still had caramels in the RICR. They were not that great but when you put them in your coffee.... that was the best way to drink coffee on the field !
It’s amazing to see how well other countries such as France give their soldiers some pretty incredible foods in their rations vs. the processed crap that America gives our soldiers. It just goes to show how much America values our brave soldiers that put their lives on the line for us. Same way our school system doesn’t value what they feed our children for school lunches but every other country serves actual home cooked meals, some made by actual chefs.
Military rations tend to mimic the food eaten in the country, because that is considered best for the soldiers' morale. Unfortunately many Americans eat rather unhealthily and the MREs tend to reflect that. French people take their food very seriously and I don't think French soldiers would like American MREs!
The thing that got me is you have all this food so much thought went into, and one dinky plastic spork that has to last all day for it, except it's foldable is it'll probably break as often as it doesn't.
My husband is in the French Army, and he knows those.
1 : never eating it cold (or in really extreme conditions). French soldiers always take the time to eat, and they have cold rations when needed.
2 : those tissues were once labelled to be sanitary paper (to be polite...) And why do you not get that many? Well... Those rations constipates every person eating them.
3 : that cheese was horrible before they changed it. They never ate it, and more often than not, was thrown away or.. used as exercise grenades. And do NOT put that in fire : it explodes ! (and causes terrible burns)
That said, my husband told me the one you have ? Not the worst one ;)

not really, the french ration is a full day while the american mre is a single-meal, the ratio is actually 6 mre's to exchange 1 french ration.
Of course American MREs aren't worth as much there's way more of them than there are French rations.
The US ration are horrible , realy "junk food" (i think the badest of the world...), the ratio is more 5 US rations for 1 French ration...Even the russian rations are much better than US rations...
@@Gameprojordan Quantity does not equal quality!---Except you are Russian!

Missed opportunity: making a s’more with the nougat, chocolate biscuit, and chocolate bar. Extra points if she can figure out how to do it on that mini stove
nougat will not melt well sooo bad smores :/
Oh no... Noigat would not really be good in this. It's heavily honey based and is not really the texture of nougat you see in chocolate bars.
Rather, melt the chocolate and crumble up the biscuits to make cake ;)
Oh no, don't do that. That stove has such a bad chemical smell!
What part of French didn't you understand1!
Emmy's reaction to the muesli having chocolate chips instead of raisins is so relatable.
Ditto. I hate raisins, but I love the foods that are polluted with buttloads of raisins, like muesli, trail mixes, etc.
Way better in this way than biting a cookie and finding out those specks weren't chocolate
@@lyneyra I've done that, lol. Wasn't happy.
She has a voice like honey. So smooth and nice. Could listen to her for hours.
It makes sense that the country that invented gastronomy would have really nice rations
Yay! This is how I first found your channel, so happy for the throwback!
Me three!!!😀
Me four!
It's funny how as a french high school student I ate a very similar breakfast as the army ration one every morning. Muesli and coffee at home and pate de fruit and cereal bars in the bus. All of the products in the video really are authentic french ones 😄
Everything in this ration looks delicious. It’s nice to see you enjoying different foods, especially something sent by someone.
Are those kinds of tissue packaging not common in the us? you seemed pretty excited about being able to reseal them haha!
we do have them, at least where i live. but its emmy yknow, she’s always excited.
Yes, we have them, but emmy hasn't seen much in the us rations she has taste tested
Quite common.
Common for civilian use, but not in military rations.
This looks much nicer than other rations I've seen with the nice muesli and biscuits.
Loved this video Emmy! I just graduated United States Marine Corps bootcamp and for the past 3 months I couldn’t wait to watch one of your videos. How fitting it’s a MRE! ✨
As a french, let me tell you : the Opinel is a nice touch !

I love the MRE videos, I always learn something new and it makes me smile seeing all the varieties out there!
This truly seems like one of the best rations you've tasted. Compact and with good variety. A good moral booster, which is very important when these are needed.
"It's like Handy Snacks"
Prepackaged foods were mostly a not going to find here in my home growing up but of course seeing all of our friends get them we would beg for Handy Snacks, Hostess cakes & Dunkaroo's.
Ok, after your reaction to how the tissue packet opened (which is how they do in the UK too), I’m really interested in how tissue packs work in the US…
They do that here in the US too she is just adorable and loves everything lol
Emmy, I started collecting and eating rations as a hobby from watching you 3 years ago doing these ration reviews.
Which one is your favorite?
i love this woman, she is so positive about everything but IN A POSITIVE WAY if that makes sense, its not toxic positivity, its genuine and very healthy, soothing...

That ration actually looked so tasty. By far the best ration I’ve seen.
MREs are the reason I started watching you, and I'm elated to see another! :D
Fair trade coffee in a ration, that’s great! It’s fun for me as an American who’s been living in France for most of my adult life to finally see a French ration! The tuna would be the appetizer and the cheese would follow the main course before desert. 😄

Pretty sure it was Napoleon who coined "An army marches on its stomach."
And then he marched his army into Russia.....smh...
@@visi9856 still the comedy of history
It's true though, without morale your army won't succeed. You have to take care of your people if you want your people to take care of you. As far as Napoleon's strategic thinking, I can't really say much on that. LOL
The French ration is the grand prize in terms of price and quality...Viva la France.....❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
I love how the majority of this video is Emmy being pleasantly surprised by the taste of food that doesn't look so appetizing.
The words that you use to describe things are so relatable I feel like know the flavors you're experiencing
@@chefykitty Same! I only drink coffee when it serves a practical purpose, for example all-nighters lol
@@chefykitty in the same boat, I looooove the smell of coffee but the taste is just waay too strong
Emmy, I love how you always wait to finish chewing before you start talking. I also really like the detail in your descriptions. I’ve been watching for years and you never fail to entertain. Have a nice night ☺️
I remember a news crew embedded with within a French army during the first desert storm reporting on their meal and how it came with wine.
🤔
Yeah I also remember hearing about different countries hunkered down together somewhere, and the French mess hall was the envy of all, and as you wrote, they were served wine 😊
The french soldiers come with wine.
The cutest lady to ever eat an MRE. Love your work on these Miss!
I literally was just pouring myself some powdered lemonade in a glass thinking of these videos!!!! ❤️❤️

This really makes the US military MRE look yucky. I wish you would have heated the carbonara!

Am I the only one missing Emmy saying, "Itadakimasu" before she eats?

This was a really great review. You’re so pleasant and vibrant Emmy. You also have a great choice of words when describing what you eat. This is coming from a ELA teacher. 😅😅😅
It seemed like there wasn’t much in here when you unpacked it but going through it all, there was tons! I love how many little snacks and desserts there were, you can have so many different combos.
Hi Emmy, you have a very nice MRE. First time i see carbonara in a can, it look okay. Bonne soirée et bon appétit . The "Rillettes de thon" are tuna spread. Rillettes can be made with pork usually.
I have yet to see any review you have done that is anything but nice. Just love watching. You are such a wonderfully positive and kind human being. Thank you ❤️
Should have tried the Chocolate biscuit with the Strawberry Jam, it's really good.
Emmy reviews of rations are fascinating and fantastic....The future practical use of her knowledge is huge!
@@riproduzionee Thanks! Looks like a much nicer gauze than what I am sewing with. A really pretty top!
Sadly I struggle with quilting - could never get it right in my textile design course! Just wanted to say what a lovely, wholesome comment this is. Put a smile on my face...all the best!
I miss the ration/MRE videos. Loved them all. Hope you do more in the future.
De = duh
(and some "corruption" or over-correction of the word, like foetus = fetus, but the "oe" is an over-corruption),
In some words, "-tion" = "-sion" but in other it can be "T - ion", we have a lot of little exception like that :')
But i admit French is much easier in his/is pronunciation than English.
Yeeeeeeeeeey! I joined your channel years ago because of these videos - so happy to see this style again 🤗
Yyyaaayyyy! This is how I fell in love with this channel years ago! 🥰
Was so excited to see a new ration video! Thank you to Alex who sent it!!
No shade to France but they’re much more peaceful more money to spend on food.
far less soldiers too and even less in active war zones
imagime other countries even serving actual meals in high school cafeterias
@@noodletongs2664 now yes but france is the country with the most battle won. And i don't know if they still have soldier deployed but France is the 3rd country selling the most weapons in the world so not that peaceful.
More of these please! Me and my wife binged all your MRE videos and love them very much
Hey, glad you enjoyed it :) My two main takeaways from trying French rations out are a) the food is tasty, and b) esbit fuel smells like a fish fell into a chemical fire.
I love how you seem to always have a positive response to things
Best ration I have seen!! This looks like something I can eat yum 😋
Im so excited you brought this back I love this series so much! I hope you decide to do more😊
It’s amazing to see how well other countries such as France give their soldiers some pretty incredible foods in their rations vs. the processed crap that America gives our soldiers. It just goes to show how much America values our brave soldiers that put their lives on the line for us. Same way our school system doesn’t value what they feed our children for school lunches but every other country serves actual home cooked meals, some made by actual chefs.
Wow
Military rations tend to mimic the food eaten in the country, because that is considered best for the soldiers' morale. Unfortunately many Americans eat rather unhealthily and the MREs tend to reflect that. French people take their food very seriously and I don't think French soldiers would like American MREs!
The thing that got me is you have all this food so much thought went into, and one dinky plastic spork that has to last all day for it, except it's foldable is it'll probably break as often as it doesn't.
I LOVE the inclusion of mint tea! It's great for upset stomachs.
