I always wonder if Emmy is trying to open it properly or not. The key is to open the peelable seal right in the middle where the seal comes to a point. If you open it at that point it allows you to focus all of the pressure on a small part of the seal. The seal fails fairly often anyway but it helps if you try to open from the right spot.
Since they haven't gusseted the beverage bag, wait until your main entree is heated, then use the cardboard container for that. Pretty sure the bottom folds together to make an stand. But I retired from the army in 2011. So this is new fangled technology and menus to me. 😂
I bet the person that put that lemon-scented towelette in the MRE had no idea it would bring anyone so much joy ever, and for that reason alone I love Emmy.
Never heard of beef goulash mre. When I served, the beef ravioli was a favorite. I liked the chicken tetrazini as well. Back in the old days the MREs came with a book of matches and a little bottle of Tabasco sauce.
Youngsters! First gen MREs had dehydrated pucks that were supposed to be pork or beef patties but were more like dog food. And you had to bring your own tobasco sauce! The C Rats were better.
Goulash is legit my favorite food. My grandpa makes this for birthday meals in my family. We use Wolfgang Puck's recipe with spaetzle and it is AMAZING. Please try out Wolfgang Puck's recipe. You won't regret it Edit: I suppose I should clarify that I'm talking about Hungarian goulash (though Wolfgang Puck is Austrian). Either way NOT American goulash
I'm half Austrian and half Hungarian and really proud of your goulash recipe choice! Wolfgang Puck is an amazing chef and I've tried his recipe too, very similar to my grandma's and simply delicious
Yea it was great until that one time when mom was jibba jabba on the phone and waaaaay overcooked the macaroni. It somehow turned back into flour in the Goulash and we had to eat gruel. 🤮

I have worked at the Wornick co for 21 years (Nov 23). The company that made your beef goulash MRE. I have tried some of them but I don't work in the same building that the lab is in so I don't get to try them anymore. I was not big on them anyway (not hungry enough). But I like seeing other people enjoy our work. Salute to all of our military women and men, thank you for your service.

I'll never forget eating MREs for dinner! Back when the cheese and crackers came in a can. Love to watch you Emmy. Keep 'em coming!
Sisi Charriere definitely not recommending anyone do that but when you have 10 minutes to eat in the field, you're not gonna spend half the time waiting for your food to heat up. you gotta do what you gotta do sometimes 🤷🏽♀️
I'm from maine and my nana used to make a dish she called "american chop suey" which people in other states say is goulash. It was elbow macaroni, onion, green pepper, ground beef and Campbells tomato soup. I still make it for my family today!
One point to make .. usually when you eat MREs you are in the field and have often been very busy .. and are therefore hungry .. there is a big difference between eating in a kitchen and eating an MRE in the field where hunger adds the spice!

I grew up eating the American version of goulash. My grandma made it for dinner almost every single time we visited her and she always added peas and carrots to it along with the macaroni noodles. Sometimes cheese sprinkled over the top, too.
My husband was in the Air Force and he says no one made the Coco beverage into a drink. They made it into Ranger pudding. Use just a little bit of water, the sugar packet, and the creamer packet mixed into the cocoa drink powder until it's a thick paste. Bingo! You have Ranger pudding. In the field when you're cold and exhausted, it was a little bright spot of something different at the end of your meal. Very comforting!
My mom used to make her version of goulash. She used ground beef, onions, tomatoes and peppers, and elbow macaroni. She also would put a package of frozen mixed vegetables in hers. Just salt and pepper for flavoring. It was good!
Yay another MRE! I love watching you describe the flavors. You describe it so well that it's almost like I'm tasting it myself. 7:09 did something happen to the camera? "Stacking wood. Nice."
My grandma made American goulash my whole childhood! A can of stewed tomatoes, a pound of hamburger, a box of plain macaroni, and generous salt and pepper. I think Clara would have approved of it as a poor man's meal! Nourishing, tasty, and cheap. ❤️
Fun fact: you can make brownies with your hot chocolate powder. Just mix in a bit of water to make a thick slurry, grab your canteen cup and put your batter in. Leave on a hot engine block for however long it takes.
When opening a MRE if you look at the middle of the top edge you will see a pointed peak on the seal, Pull there. You have more leverage and that peak aids in opening it. The edge doesn't do that.
This is great timing. I grew up eating traditional Hungarian Goulash and after recently going vegetarian, I decided to try and adapt the recipe. Much to my surprise, I got all the flavours exactly right and it's just as yummy! So I'm eating my tasty Goulash while you eat yours.
My mom used to make the elbow, tomato, and grad. Beef one. It was one of the only dinners that we would eat as a leftover if there was any left. Really easy to make and delicious.
We made goulash when I was growing up. Basically just browned ground beef, elbow macaroni, salt, pepper, tomato sauce, sautéed onions, and sometimes a small bit of onion soup mix. Pretty tasty stuff.
Fun fact: American Goulash is closely related to "American Chop Suey" which is also made with elbow macaroni but this does in fact have green peppers in it.
Fun fact: in 2001 there was another version of Chop Suey! That became wildly popular here in the states. It started with "wake up" And ended with "angels who deserve to die." And you wanna know why? Because they wanted to.
My mom grew up in RI and she called it Goulash!! I grew up eating it as a kid, my grandpa would make it a lot! It's basically beef, pasta and tomatoes. I would add cheese on top, it's very yummy!!!
The goulash that I grew up on was from an old Betty Crocker cookbook (probably dates from the 60's). It was labeled Hungarian Goulash and doesn't contain any vegetables, other than onion. Main ingredients of the sauce are ketchup, worcestershire sauce, dried ground mustard, paprika, onion, and garlic. Mom served it over egg noodles (No Yolk brand in the bags). I made a photocopy of the recipe from my mom's book and make it any time I see a good deal on stew beef at the store.
I remember wondering about the "Patriotic cookies" when I got some in an MRE, it made me laugh when I opened the pouch, cos I too expected something in the red white & blue theme, but I just got broken pieces of everything, I'm sure there's a political joke to be had in that too... :P
Flameless ration heater tip: if you put the water in the heater, then put the ration against the heater rather than inside it within the sleeve, the heating is far more effective. Especially if you’re trying to heat two things at once (one on either side). They actually get hot rather than lukewarm in my experience.
The big bag it all came in. You can fold it down half way outward and its a bigger bowl if you want to mix things in it and need room. Jalapeno cheese and crackers are my fav. Items.
Oh emmy when you were really Struggling to open the seal I got an image in my head of the friends episode where Ross is trying to get his leather pants back on
In Australia, we call that cordial - a fruit flavoured liquid that you dilute with water, usually about 1:4, 4 being the water. You can buy it in 2 litre bottles. Most parents are mindful of the sugar, so serve it occasionally and diluted a bit more than the recommendation.
The sleeve replaces the box that the entree used to come in. You slip the entree and anything else you want heated in the heater fold the top, then slip it into the sleeve to keep it closed while heating.
My grandpa, who was from Rhode Island, called what you are referring to as American goulash as American Chop Suey! I still make it for my kids! We all love it!
I'm never this early! :O I love all of the videos, but for some reason, the MRE ones are some of my favorites. Love it! Thanks for all your amazing content, Emmy.
I grow up with the Hungary beef goulash which is basically a beef stew made with lesser cuts of meat, lard or olive oil, onion, bell pepper, tomatoes water, paprika and sour cream that requires a low and slow cooking time in order to get the meat tender. My mother got the recipe from my great, great aunt Rose who was born in Hungary and ended up in Wisconsin with the rest of her family. My mother either make it with egg noodles or spaetzle but you can serve as is. The American version your taking about is more or less like American chops suey...it good, quicker cheaper to prepare adaptation made with ground beef with filler(carrots, peas and a larger pasta ratio using elbow macaroni). Chicken Paprikash is another simple Hungary dish that's really good.
Anything +honey is amazing. Honey, a sour jam like marmalade, and peanut butter is amazing. Also recommend PBH&B, peanut butter, honey, and banana slices. So good
As someone who just got out of basic training, I seriously miss the MREs They taste SO good especially when every other day you’ve been feed dry chicken, old fish, and mushy unseasoned veggies We had a snow storm and couldn’t get regular food but we received MRE’s in the morning and lemme tell ya The breakfast MREs HIT 😋😂
I come from a military family and when I was a kid (early 70’s)our grandpa would get us the MRE’s from Camp Pendleton that came in a box and the food was in green cans. My favorite was the beans and weenies and the peanut butter. There was also crackers and chocolate. Once you mastered using the funky little can opener tasting everything was fun. We were always excited to see what MRE’s were waiting for us.
C-Rats (with cans) predated MREs that came into service in the 1980s. I left the service in 1986, never had MREs, only C-Rats. I'm one of the few who actually liked "Beans and Mfers". 😄
Army mom here....you do realise this is their food for the day!!! A little biased here, but that looks mighty small for our soldiers in a compromised situation be it war zone or training. I thank all of you below for your service. Emmy always love your videos! Could you do a video of your chickens?
Here in Michigan goulash is pretty common, we do it with ground beef, elbow noodles, tomatoes, some onion... Kinda like a drier spaghetti, served similarly, too. We just heat the meat with everything else after cooking it through, add it to pasta, and done. My mom even does it fully from canned ingredients.
American goulash is 1lb of sausage browned with half an onion and garlic Spaghetti sauce jarred is also used And a box of macaroni boiled Mix together. Add park on top to taste or cheddar melted 😋 yum
I would so love to see a Babish and Emmy cook off or say a collaboration holiday meal, recorded Babish style with no heads showing , Emmy style with a history lesson and a fun ending, plus random burping.
I knew what the sleeve was just from looking at it because it looks like a giant Hot Pocket sleeve 😂 Maybe you could crush up the bread and put it with the chocolate powder and about half as much water as usual to make pudding or some kind of brownie.
Don’t worry about the “peelable seal”. The specs on the bags are that they have to be waterproof and be air droppable without bursting open! I usually just used a knife or scissors on a multi tool to crack into them. Itadakimasu!
Yay new MRE tasting!! I love all your videos but there is just something I love about watching your MRE videos. Keep it up with the always top-notch content! PS. Whenever I see the moist towelette I am just crossing my fingers for Emmy that it's a Lemon scented one!!

The beef stew was always my favorite, and the veggie pasta. And I'd trade my M&M and Skittles away for pound cake.
Emme, if you reuse the sleeve from the entree , the beverage bag doesn’t need gussets.
But her point is still valid.

Army mom here....you do realise this is their food for the day!!! A little biased here, but that looks mighty small for our soldiers in a compromised situation be it war zone or training. I thank all of you below for your service. Emmy always love your videos! Could you do a video of your chickens?
"Eat the ducky moss!" My favorite part 😁
Here in Michigan goulash is pretty common, we do it with ground beef, elbow noodles, tomatoes, some onion... Kinda like a drier spaghetti, served similarly, too. We just heat the meat with everything else after cooking it through, add it to pasta, and done. My mom even does it fully from canned ingredients.
Oh, so excited I almost forgot. “stacking wood ... nice”
Fantastic review Emmy! This menu replaced the old menu #22 Asian beef strips. That menu was pretty good too.
"Stacking wood. Nice." This ration looked pretty tasty.
American goulash is
1lb of sausage browned with half an onion and garlic
Spaghetti sauce jarred is also used
And a box of macaroni boiled
Mix together. Add park on top to taste or cheddar melted 😋 yum
Can also add carrot and bell pepper or celery like a mirepoix
I would so love to see a Babish and Emmy cook off or say a collaboration holiday meal, recorded Babish style with no heads showing , Emmy style with a history lesson and a fun ending, plus random burping.
this style of goulash is a childhood staple of mine. My nana (she is Polish) makes this for dinner at least once a week!!
"Eat the buckyballs"!! Oh my goodness!! lol
I knew what the sleeve was just from looking at it because it looks like a giant Hot Pocket sleeve 😂
Maybe you could crush up the bread and put it with the chocolate powder and about half as much water as usual to make pudding or some kind of brownie.
The maltodextrin gived you a glucose boost, i think.
i MISSSSSS your MRE reviews! I could watch them all day!
_You have been visited by the spirit of SteveMRE_
*Nice*
Don’t worry about the “peelable seal”. The specs on the bags are that they have to be waterproof and be air droppable without bursting open! I usually just used a knife or scissors on a multi tool to crack into them. Itadakimasu!
i thought my phone just died
My favorite thing about these videos is your excitement and enthusiasm for the moist towelettes 😂
Also anyone else notice that moment where it blacks out for a second?
That is when she got the tabasco sauce.
My grandma used to make goulash all the time! Great for winter days!
Omg I’m korean boy 🇰🇷🇰🇷🇰🇷
Love your video 😭🙋🏻♂️❤️👍🏻
Yay new MRE tasting!! I love all your videos but there is just something I love about watching your MRE videos. Keep it up with the always top-notch content!
PS. Whenever I see the moist towelette I am just crossing my fingers for Emmy that it's a Lemon scented one!!
