  • We're talking about overpriced baby products you'll regret buying. Many people might label these as newborn "must-haves" or "essentials" but I think there are better alternatives and it's best to avoid these.

I totally can’t live without my orbit baby …. Totally love the fact that I don’t have to wake up my child when I transfer from my stroller to my car … and the fact that I can rotate the car seat to load and unload my child as well as address him when he needs a diaper change in the car. You don’t have to be a contortionist to do all the things you need. TOTALLY WORTH IT!!! Plus the added bonus of being able to turn the car seat in the stroller during dining environments is a total PLUSS!!! Can’t hate on this stroller. If you can afford it, you WILL LOVE IT!!

For us the 4moms bassinet worked really well, transitioning to a crib was no issue either! Paying that bit extra for sleep is worth it, specially in those early months!

I love the honesty and tips on this video. I completely agree with everything going from my first born, I wanted all the bells and whistles and everything possible made for babies. For my second child, I realized there was so much I did not necessarily need , and made much smarter choices. I also respect this video is from a Dad!! Great for men to tune in as well! Thank you!

Can’t agree more on the swing. We bought the 4Moms swing and the BabyBjorn bouncer… both expensive. The only thing our baby likes is a $30 little swing that a relative gifted us 🤣

Thank you so much for the developmental information! As a public health professional and child birth educator I know the dangers and I also know the convenience things like excersaucers and bumbo seats give parents. The key is length of time, but we also chose just to completely forego them with my son. I would just but him on the floor under his baby gym.
Also, I agree with the swing sentiment, however.... What I find is that the modern swings are the problem. Babies for centuries have enjoyed the rocking swinging motion. Mostly because it emulates the buoyant movements they had in the womb. The modern "swings" (I don't even call them that, because they don't swing) like the mamaroo do NOT provide that same motion. IT's almost like a dupe and that's why I feel like they are 50/50 toss ups with babies. We bought a compact inexpensive travel swing with our first, but he hated it. I think the seat was honestly just uncomfortable. The foldable, stadium style seat is not going to be liked for many small babies that are used to being swaddled or healed snuggly. My experience and that of friends' babies is that the more traditional and multi directional swings like the big Gracos are loved by most babies. The seat is more snuggly (you can even swaddle baby in there) and the swinging motion is more broad. But like all things, moderation is key because as you mentioned dependence even on swings is real, but they can be super convenient to get baby to nap while dealing with an older toddler.

The skip hop exosaucer is actually the best imo from a safety point. OBVIOUSLY for short tern use. But you adjust the height so they can't tiptoe, full flat foot with some knee bend. Also the balance board can encourage that muscle development when at the right height. Again, short term, and height adjusted well! But I love it. It's also not overstimulating and converts to a table! This thing has enabled me to shower or get some dishes done so many times now lol

4 moms bassinet and mamaroo worked really well for us. Had no issues transitioning to the crib. As he got closer to 4 months, we slowly kept decreasing the movement on the bassinet, starting with the naps. He had no issues. Within a few days, he was sleeping without it. Now, on his crib, he sleeps like a rockstar. Just remember that all babies are different, we had to try different things until we found what worked for us.

Try the Babymoov Naos travel crib & playard. It's lighter than the Guava Lotus, folds up smaller, and costs less. Only 9 lbs! We've traveled with it countless times. It holds up well and is easy to set up and tear down.

I definitely agree with many things, but the snugamonkey swing was/is a major key for us. I think it was $150. It took time for baby 1 and 2 to like it, but once they did, it was a dream.

We bought an Uppababy full set-up for two kids. It wasn't cheap. Barely used it more than 10 times.
We bought the Keens stroller too. Barely used it for thr kids. But it made a great multiple use wagon to carry stuff.
Kids grow so fast, these things don't last too long before they get outgrown.
Best to buy used and pass it on to another newborn family. Pay it forward.

I agree about the excersaucer but they can be helpful for short periods of time. We had the Skiphop one (shown here at 6:48) but we did not put our daughter in it for longer than 10-15 minutes at a time. I used it to go to the bathroom or take a shower. Something where I needed her to be contained and safe. You could achieve the same thing by placing your baby in a pack n' play or a play yard. We didn't have either of those as our house is very small. That said, if you're only going to use it for short periods of time, don't spend $$ on it. I also want to second the Guava Lotus. It travels nicely on an airplane. Our daughter had only ever slept in her crib and really struggled the first night. We we're able to unzip the side of the Lotus and stay next to her as she fell asleep, then zip it back up after she was sound asleep. It rests on the floor so there's a much higher weight limit and you get longer use out of it that way.

I am a infant teacher and we have an OT and PT come for therapy for a child and they told me that they hate the bumbo chair for that exact reason. Also, any stationary item your child should only be in for 5-10 minute max. In my classroom we have children 3months - 18months. We do not use a swing, or a bumbo chair or a vibrating chair. The children are on their belly with teachers and their friends.

A lot of these companies play up the need to be prepared. As we should. But a lot of the items we could have easily done without. We had 3 different type of swings, baby wasn’t having any of that none sense. Stayed away from the bumbo for health and development reasons- as a result our baby has been trying to walk since 4 months. 7 1/2 month in and she climbs to the second floor of the house 5/6 times a day. (Supervised of course). And always looking to me or my wife to assist her in walking around. But it also could be due to the fact that we haven’t put shoes on her or cover her hands at all.
Speaking of uncovered hands; get the baby a finger file. With the circular pads that gently grinds away the nails painlessly.
Purchased the Greco playpen, changing station, bassinet combo (great purchase), and the Mika Mickey bassinet for portability around the house.
We ended up donating a LOT of the things that we bought or that were gifted to us in the end.
    Great video. Good work.

In Canada, many of the cheaper pack and plays are not rated safe for sleep by Health Canada, especially for infants. The ones that are, are pricey. Even the Graco that is safe for sleep is $300. For $50 more, I'm going for the Bugaboo stardust for its compact shape and forgoing a basinet.

I used the bugaboo stardust for my baby after she outgrew her Uppababy bassinet. She slept in the stardust for 2 months and then moved her to her own crib. I bought the Nuna Leaf just because even if the child doesn’t like it in the baby stage, it holds up to 120lbs, so there’s plenty of time to use it still. I have a fisher price snugakitty swing as a backup 😂
As for the playard, if the cheaper brands would release a breathable mesh mattress, I’d be all over it. But they haven’t yet, so I’m sticking to the Sena Aire. It’s nice that the whole mattress is easily washable too!
As a CPST though, I despise the premise of the orbit baby and Doona products.

Is the Orbit baby still an item not to “splurg on”? Fortunate enough to have a baby shower where the “travel system” is being taken care of and I’m trying to figure out whether or not the rotation piece is worth it? There are a lot of strollers now where you can snap a child in and out of from the car to the stroller, so it defeats the purpose of having to rotate. At some point it’ll get to a convertible car seat and I could think at that point is where the swivel comes into play.

As far as some of these products like the pack and play, your paying for a product that does not use toxins. As a mother of three and a grandmother of one I prefer to support the companies who are not using chemicals in their products.

I wasn't sure how much I'd use that feature but we use it constantly. I can also hang really heavy stuff on the handles without it tipping over. My huge diaper bag fits perfectly on it. It turns like a dream and it's comfortable for her.

I got everything handed down. Play pins, swings, jumpers, bassinets and walkers. All of these items will be used by baby for four to six months max. Why spend 100s of dollars on it. I did get the upper baby vista stroller. But that’s something I will be able to use for years with both of my kids. And I got it used. What do you think of baby monitors? Is the owlet sock overhyped and overpriced? I have a four-month-old that is constantly rolling on his tummy when sleeping, it makes me super nervous. Would you recommend the owlet sock?

    • @dadverb
      @dadverb  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Getting it all handed down is such a good money-saver and most of the gear is usually in great condition. Regarding your tummy sleeper, I wouldn't be super nervous. While the AAP does recommend the "back is best" approach, many babies do roll and prefer to sleep on their tummies no matter how much you try and that's actually a perfectly okay sleep position, so I wouldn't jump to get the Owlet per se. That said, I do think it's a good monitor (Nanit is still my favorite) that you can probably get second-hand as well.

Sometimes I sit and giggle about how my wife and I have spent almost no money at all having our first baby. Literally the only thing we have purchased is a baby monitor. The baby shower took care of what we needed for at least the first 3 months of her life. My mom just cant help herself and purchase the crib and stroller and shes buys diapers and formula every time she goes to target. We got plenty of clothes from newborn through 6 months from the baby shower and I told my sister and brother to send me all their used little girl clothes. Shes has enough clothes for at least the first year of her life. My sister gave me the 4moms Rockaroo rocker that she used for her son. It feels a bit selfish, but its also kind of humorous to me that the only money we have had to spend is on a baby monitor. We have been blessed with our first kid. People were hesitant to offer me their used baby items at first, because apparently a lot of people dont want used items for their first kid. Well Im not lot that at all. Please bring on all the used baby items. Why spend the money when shes just going to grow out of the stuff so fast anyway. I love my little girls, but daddy didnt get where he is today being stupid with his money.

It is comfortable ( cheap ones have crap matrases) easy to take with , sets up in split second and child always sleeps well as it is the same bed 👍😏. We had fir firs a cheap travel bed , dd did not sleep in it just screamed . I guess it depends on lifestyle abd use. If you travel little then better use hotell provided cribs

We love our Orbit stroller! Totally worth the price. I only got the stroller, not the travel system. I don't believe in putting babies in infant car seats. They're heavy and unsafe out of the car. We use a convertible seat from birth.

As someone who studied Early Childhood Development (ECD) I love that you didn't get a travel system. Babies should only be in them in the car or a school run type situation where you're only out for like 15 min. It's not good for their spines to be scrunched up like that. If one were to get a travel system, I'd insist on a reclining car seat
