- Command Sergeant Major Basil L. Plumley, a career army Soldier and war hero recently passed away at the age of 92. Fort Benning held a ceremony in his honor at the Infantry Chapel where his daughter and his close friends gathered to farewell an Army legend.
I was there for this funeral. Attended with Patriot Guard. Standing there and 3 MOH officers came by and thanked us for our service. WOW!
Very nice to see Sam Elliott out there. I never met CSM Plumley but from what I read about him, Elliott seemed to be the man to portray him and did a marvelous job. What a tribute to an amazing human being.
An old friend of mine knew Hal Moore and CSM Plumley both, after seeing the movie he said Mel Gibson did a fine job of portraying Hal Moore, but that Sam Elliot WAS CSM Plumley. I can only take his word for it, but that's pretty good praise I think.
ffryan And Sam Elliot was at his service as well. Sitting next to CSM. Plumley’s daughter.
I thought the same thing! Sam Elliott is not the typical Hollywood star!
REST IN PEACE SGT. MAJOR , HIS
" TOURS OF DUTY " ARE EXAMPLES
OF BRAVERY & COURAGE UNDER FIRE WITH LEADERSHIP FOR THOSE IN HIS COMMAND , TAKING CARE OF " HIS
TROOPERS " .
U.S.A. " THIS WE'LL DEFEND "
@@teambuddamma I did not notice that until I saw your comment. A great honor.
Never expected an actor to not only be invited but front row with his daughter in support, shows how much Sam cared and how good he must have been to be an honorary member
I was wondering if that was Sam Elliot that was there with the family.
I was at the funeral with the Patriot Guard. I served in the Marine Corps in Vietnam. As we stood in the flag line outside the church there were two Soldiers wearing the Congressional Medal of Honor that walked by and thanked us for our service. I felt so honored that these men would say something like this to us.
God Bless you & Thank you for your selfless sacrifice you gave.
Stand tall Devildog & Semper Fi
Was Sam Elliott there
I was with the PGR that day as well. It gave me goose bumps to see these heroes I had only read about in person. It was an honor to be there and pay tribute to a fine soldier. Thank you for your service!
@@tomdotson6053 yes Sam Elliot was there
I met some Marines from Nam, although I wish for their sakes I didn't have to. At time I was an Air Force Nurse @Tachikawa AFB.The Navy couldn't handle all of your men injured during TET. Later I had the honor as a Flight Nurse of bringing Nam injured home. This video & your comment has me in tears. I was a compassionate rock back then but am a mushy old lady now. Thank you Marine for your service, I love the Marines.
Command Sergeant Major Basil L. Plumley was and forever will be a true American hero. Rest In Peace and may God bless you and your family.
R.I.P., Sergeant Major. Your service is an inspiration to all.
We Were Soldiers... is one of my favorite movies. I was a Nam Infantry Vet and when I left Nam in 1971 I was told never tell anyone I was in Nam. I didn't until 2005, then realizing Nam Vets were appreciated, not spit on, I started wearing a Nam Vet hat and a shirt that had 87 guy's names on the back that died in my Company. I took a 8mm color film movie camera into to the bush during an Air Mobile Combat Assault, the footage is in 5 Nam documentaries with credits that I took them and I did a Tribute to the last Chaplain (Merle Brown) to be killed in combat on Easter Sunday 1971. If you want to see it, just put in Wolfie the Grunt in any search engine or TH-cam. Basil was a great man, I just wish I had served under him.
Braught tears to My eyes I was 10 years old when My Mother and I were hand My Fathers Flag
My Father is. buryed 7 spaces away from My younger Brother who died 3 years before My Father

We are here in this great country because of warrior soldiers like Sergeant Plumley. Men whom the words " Duty," " Honor" and " Country" meant everything. A life well-lived.
Plumley was a super hero ... the standard by which most others fall short.....all I have is respect, reverence, and gratitude..... there aren't enough words
Major respect for SGM Plumley, as well as Sam Elliot who I was shocked to see not only at the funeral but also front row next to Plumley's daughter.
Rest In Peace Sergeant Major and thank you.
Wow - so inspiring! CSM Plumley died in the hospice facility in Columbus, GA, where I used to work - I remember when he was our patient. He received so many letters & cards during his stay from people all over the world - it was incredible! I was working in the building the day he died, and I remember the announcement...very sad day. In another turn of events, I’m now the pianist in the chapel where his funeral took place (The Infantry Chapel) - was actually there last nite for choir practice! Such a gorgeous & historic facility. In another weird connection, my brother was an “extra” in the movie We Were Soldiers back in 2001, and worked closely with Sam Elliott in his role as CSM Plumley - brother has great stories of the set of that movie! And finally, my step grandfather knew CSM Plumley very well, as he was also a CSM around the same time; he had only good things to say about CSM Plumley. Not intending to make this all about me & my family, but I’m so grateful to have some sort of connections to this great American hero...it made his passing even more sad & meaningful.
When you own 3 of the 342 medals for combat infantry ever given out...
I never understood why We Were Soldiers never received higher praise because it is on of the finer Vietnam war movies ever made and is very accurate.
You absolutely correct the most accurate. My husband is a Marine Col & he to made the same statement. God Bless him.
Except the ending in the movie never happened.
342 people have 3 awards of the Combat Infantryman Badge. So he owns 3 of 1,026.
The Movie is accurate most of the way. I think Moore gave it 60% truth 40% Hollywood BS and Galloway called it 70-30
yes, you are certainly correct. the movie probably does not receive higher praise because the general public and the critics would not necessarily want to be reminded on that war in vietnam. the tragedy, the controversy, the tremendous loss of life as well as the ending to that war left a scar that in many ways is still with us and emblematic of a "futile effort" in many minds. for those who served, fought, died, were wounded or experienced vietnam either directly or indirectly it is a memory that many would prefer to forget. several of my uncles and older cousins served honorably and i was trained by those veterans as well as the veterans of korea. may they Rest In Peace
There have only been 342 CIB's awarded with 3 stars above the wreath, not 342 total CIB's.
Mel Gibson and Randall Wallace both said that when it came time to cast the CSM in the movie they didn't even think twice; Sam Elliot all the way.
Definitely one of Sam Elliot's most outstanding performances.
RIP SGM!
KenScottB Elliot was the perfect choice to play CSM Plumley, everybody who has ever served in the Armed Forces knew a Senior Non-Commissioned Officer who you respected and feared at the same time.
He was class in Tombstone too
If this mans story don’t make you proud to be a American, nothing will, thank you for your service and Rest In Peace.
Thank you for your service Command Sergeant Major. I am glad you were around to enjoy your retirement for so many years.
He had more character in his finger nail then you’ll find in 95% of Americans. Rest In Peace God knows he EARNED IT🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
It's a well. We all have one. He dug his deep. So can you. He is what we should all strive for as men. We won't get as far, but as long as we are trying Plumley will be proud.
Make him proud.
Always amusing looking at the likes and subscriptions of people who think they are judges of character.
Make that 99%.
The "Essence" of what a Command Sergeant Major is. Can't get much more of a compliment than that. Thank you Basil.
Everyone eventually sheds their mortal coil, but legends never die. CSM Plumley, you are a legend among legends, it would have been the greatest honor of my life had I the opportunity to meet you. Rest easy soldier, you have earned it
How do you top this mans dedication to country? You can’t. RIP Sergeant Major. You deserve it.
How do you know what kind of god damn day it is.
Michael Teaches - What are you, the f*cking weatherman?
"Beautiful morning sergeant major"
"What are you the fucking weather man now"
Are you a fucking weatherman now!
what are you the goddam weather man
Now Sergeant Savage this is a good day.😉
That’s where I did my basic n AIT then airborne love Benning and was proud to be part of that history
Soldiers never die, they just fade away.
RIP
Rest in Peace SGM Plumley. A life of service, sacrifice, honor and valor. God Bless.
Job done for the Army & Country Sergeant Major. RIP. From a ex Sergeant Major.
It's really hard to imagine how strong and tough the Command Sargeant Major was r.i.p. sir much respect and admiration from Canada
When I joined the army in 76 we still had hardcore bad ass sergeant majors like CSM Plumley.
SERGEANTS MAJOR
I'm a German but this man has my Full Respect . He was a real Hard Guy RIP .
Rest in peace, Sgt. Major.
Thank you Sergeant, we all sleep tonight in peace because of your sacrifice. Godspeed brother.
THE most infantry man of all time!
11B...like me. R.I.P. Hero. Infantry born Infantry bred. ducti amore patriae ATW slow hand salute. Fort Benning home of the Infantry.
A true American hero. Rest in Peace, Sergeant Major. From what I heard in the history texts and films, you were one of the few to put the fear of God not only the Nazis and North Koreans, but the Viet Cong and NVA as well. I hope to meet you in the next life.
First off, I have no idea how this got into my YT feed 9 years late but I am glad it did. CSM Plumley was the ultimate keeper of the tribal wisdom when it comes to the army.
What I find even more impressive is that Sam Elliot is sitting with the family but he is never mentioned in this video. He wasn't there to promote himself but to honor a man he portrayed on the screen and that says even more about Plumley.
He was a great guy. Him and his family used to come into the PX. Where he will sit and visit with anyone. I met him before he passed away.
Wow... Laid to rest on base. Salute Sergeant Major...
I was there that day. Held an American Flag as part of the PGR. I knew the CSM when I was a young NCO serving at Benning. He was a remarkable leader. Rest in peace.
I was honored to have served with CSM Plumley when he was the Command Sergeant Major of The School Brigade at Fort Benning a half century ago. As I was reporting for duty he looked me over and, in true CSM fashion, he declared....,'You don't look like no whiz kid to me!" I wasn't, but I never knew that I had acquired that nickname on a previous tour of duty when I was a newly minted 2nd lieutenant.....behind my back, of course.
A year or so later, I introduced him to my late mother-in-law who had survived WWII in occupied Holland. When he told her that he had visited Holland several years earlier, she asked when? He had jumped into Holland in Operation Market Garden. Hearing that, she challenged him with...."What took you so long? We were waiting for you!" All he could say in a humorous false humility was..."I got there as soon as I could!"
The photo of The School Brigade headquarters contingent hangs on the wall in my office with CSM Plumley standing tall and watching over me every day.
Unfortunately my Uncle Nick, whom I’m named after, wasn’t so lucky. I made it home from Vietnam but my Uncle died on Nov 27th 1944 in Germany also as an Infantry Sergeant, but serving with Patton as Armored Escort! This was just before Patton took over , I believe, III Corps at the beginning of the Battle of the Bulge. He is buried in Holland. I was lucky enough to be put in touch with the man who volunteers to take care of his greave site there. It’s truly a beautiful site. It’s confusing if you Goggle our names, you find two Donvito Infantry Sergeants in two different wars.
I love this anekdote, been looking for this all over the net.
After my returning state side from a tour in Korea in the 2nd Inf Division, All Infantry Brigade, I was assigned to 50TH CO. (OCS Tactical Officer) , then later as the Battalion Asst S3 Officer at the School Brigade at Fort Benning now Fort Hal Moore. That was back in 1976 through 1979.
I never knew that Sgt Majot Plummley was the School Brigades Command Sargent Major.
Another Great West Virginian Hero. Thank You Command Sergeant Major Plumley. " Mountaineers are Always Free" Our State Moto.
My Gentle Pitt Bull CSM Plumley was born and raised in Raleigh county Wv
Oh my god he was from west Virginia.
Pretty cool Sam Elliot was there
Never met Same Elliot but know people who have ,and been told he’s a true gent .. would have expected nothing less from him
Sam Elliott played him in a film and became closed friends with him is real life.
they couldnt have a better actor than him.
That is Respect well earned. The CSM was a true warrior leader!! Go’s bless him and his family.
Cool thing is, Sam Eliott is old enough that he could've been in the battle of the Ia Drang.
He is the kind of man that'll keep you alive during the hell on earth that is war! You see the snow on the mountain top and he wears the same uniform as you, you stand to, and do EXACTLY what he says, you might live to fight another day!
My Great Uncle served WWII,Korean War,and Vietnam War retired Lieutenant General he is still alive
My utmost respect for your Uncle for his service and the sacrifices he made to defend and protect our Great Republic.
My next door neighbor growing up did as well. COL(R) Lloyd “Scooter” Burke. A rare breed.
What is his name?
Must have served along side Colonel Sander's
True American hero.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE AND SACRIFICE. .. R. I. P.
Thank you Sir for your service ! May you rest in peace ! 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸 👍👍👍
A man with honor we can all respect. SGT Wall, USMC.
What legends are made of!!! R.I P. WARRIOR!!!
It would of been a great honor just to be in his presence . Having an ice cold beer and listening to his stories. What a man.
I think sgt major plumley would have been a pretty interesting guy to meet.he made all 4 combat jumps with the 82nd airbourne in ww2 and survived to tell about it.im a marine, but historicly hes the 3rd military and war veteran I have the most respect for.after marine general chesty puller and teddy Roosevelt, hes number 3 of americans I have the most respect for!
Robert Howard should be on that list. He's number one for me.
Yes sir, Chesty Puller had been one incredible Marine, and Plumley left his mark indeed. Add Eddie Rickenbacker to the list. There are some that follow, and some that lead, and then those that make their own script out of what they are given. These guys are part of what makes the stars on our flag shine-
Thank you for your service , when so many refused to.
Can't thank veterans enough for their service.
Even though I'm Canadian, I still appreciate allied veterans.
Thank you CSM Plumley.
And those of us Americans who can see beyond our own hubris graciously and with all honor and respect thank the soldiers of Canada who served on our flanks.
I want to recognize my hero uncle, CSM Gerald Naquin from Ft. Polk, he was Basil's age and was in Korea and Nam as well, served training Green Berets in Nam. I still have a bayonet of his from '68. I remember his dress blues with chevrons from shoulder to elbow, hash marks from elbow to wrist, and medals too many to count. Rest in peace Uncle Gerald, Basil, and the brothers in arms. We love and miss you guys. We could use real men like them right now to straighten out those who've forgotten.
Looking forward to the day I can see you again and the day that no one else has to go to war. This hurts too much.
Fort Johnson, not Fort Polk
My God, how lucky we who enjoy freedom are we to have men like him protecting that.
My sincere respect and gratitude. From a British veteran.
Thank you for your service.
As General Hal Moore once said That’s what I call a real soldier and he was right the back bone of the army .Love from the U.K.
Rest In Peace Sergeant Major. You've earned it
Amazing! Just amazing! Made tear up, bad. This man was the best America had and likely will ever have! The embodiment of the American Warrior Spirit!

"That's a nice day Sgt. Savage"
Beautiful day isn’t it Sargeant Major
*hands Sgt. Savage a canteen* "Today, is a good day. "
In my opinion, this was quietly the most underrated line of the entire movie.
Rest in peace Sergeant Major, weep not for his passing but thank God Almighty that such men have lived.
"How do you know what kind of goddamned day it is....."
May he Rest In Peace.
A fine video tribute to one exceptional warrior. Peace and rest with a nation's gratitude.

Nice Sam Elliott paying respect next to the Sgt Maj's daughter at the funeral of the legend he played in the movie "We were soldiers once and young".
The sound of Tap's still tear's my heart out to this day. R I P C S M Plumley.
I could hear the Sergeant Major enter heaven yelling, "Get off of my grass!" Peace be to you as a former Garry Owen soldier!
What a great epitaph, "I know of no man who could rest easier under that flag than Basil Plumley ". Doesn't get any more poignant, simple, and true than that.
Thank God for men like Sgt. Major Plumley
Great gesture of Sam Elliott to show his respect. God bless CSM
Love from me and mine to you and yours
Chicago Illinois Burnaine family.
CSM Plumley and Joe the reporter were real people and actuality there! Wow, one of my favorite movies and until now did not know that! Total respect for both, brave in there own ways! Question, did Joes great grandfathers really shop for shoes together? That would really top it off!
Requiescat in pace Command Sergeant Major Basil L. Plumley
Debra Dishaw Well said.
it's Latin meaning for Rest in Peace
I think that's the first Latin quote I've ever seen on youtube
And still lived 92 years God bless you.🙏
It is a very humbling, solemn and....honorable moment when you are handed your father's folded flag. RIP dad.
My mother was a young Navy nurse, who took care of those who returned from Korea with gruesome injuries. "Honorable Moment" indeed to receive her flag! ✌️❤️
They don’t make um like that no more . thank you 🙏 RIP SIR GOD BLESS
God bless his memory and all The Brave Men and Women who sacrificed so very much.
