  • Veterans recall the first major campaign of the war--and its bloodiest--during "The Battle of Ia Drang" panel at The Vietnam War Summit on Tuesday, April 26, 2016 at the LBJ Presidential Library in Austin, Texas. The conversation was moderated by Joseph L. Galloway, newspaper correspondent and Bronze Star recipient.
Introduction: Jim Knotts, president and CEO, Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund
    Panelists--
Vince Cantu, private, Seventh Cavalry, U.S. Army
Colonel Bruce P. Crandall (Ret.), Medal of Honor recipient
Dr. Tone Johnson, Jr., Bronze Star recipient
Colonel Walter Joseph Marm (Ret.), Medal of Honor recipient
    - - -
    About The Vietnam War Summit
When the LBJ Presidential Library was dedicated in May 1971, President Johnson proclaimed to the assembled crowd, "It's all here, the story of our time--with the bark off. There is no record of a mistake, or an unpleasantness or a criticism, that is not included in the files here." Accordingly, he wanted his presidential library to reflect not only the triumphs of his administration, but the failures, too--and he wanted us to learn from them to build a better future for our country.
In keeping with President Johnson's vision for his library, the summit will take a substantive, unvarnished look at the most controversial facet of his legacy: The Vietnam War. The goal is to shed definitive light on the war, its lessons, and legacy. It is also our intent to invite, include, and recognize the men and women who courageously served in Vietnam.
The passage of years offers greater perspective and an opportunity to elucidate the complexities of a war that altered not only our history, but our perception of ourselves as a nation. To look at it with the bark off may help us to move on stronger and more united. That would have been President Johnson's hope, just as it remains ours.
The summit is co-hosted by The University of Texas at Austin.

I serve in Vietnam 1967-69. USMC 2/26. I was med-evacked home half way through my second tour. I was shot up pretty good and I remember being med-evacked into a MASH unit for my initial surgery then transported to a hospital in Da Nang. When I was well enough to travel I was sent home. Twenty-two years later I found myself in Kuwait and I retired when I got home. God Bless you all and thank you.

This was well done. I was in Bravo Co. 1/7 in '69-'70. My only comment is to take exception to the pilot's statement that we should never have a draft again. He described how many went to jail rather than serve. I say, we're in wars today with exceptional soldiers, men and women, but their family and loved ones can't object to our being in the war in the first place because of those volunteer soldiers. We are in wars that we have no reason to be in, We cannot police the world. Period!.

I use to watch news reports of the Vietnam war when I came home from school. It logged a special place in my mind.
In later years I was part of a multi national force based in Phnom Penh. We were given two weeks leave so I hopped across the border to tour some of the sites as a backpacker.
As an ex enlisted soldier, huge respect to those who served, past and present.
History so often repeats itself, in the first gulf war when the Iraqi forces hi tailed it up the Basra road, the coalition forces were not allowed to follow up and"end it" because of a political decision.

I was in the outfit that went up and cleared the area where the Air Cav was to establish their home base. After clearing the area we held the mountain pass on the only road from the coast. I was on the high banks of the road shoulder looking down on the road. The Korean marines were on our flank holding the the road down to the coast as security so the Air Cav could bring in by truck from the coast the supplies stored on board the ship. Looking down from the shoulder we could see into the open trailers of the 18 wheeler trucks. The trailers were full of critical combat supplies like refrigerators, folding canvas cots and little Cushman motor scooters for the Air Cav mechanics to ride around the flight line. When a truck came along loaded with air mattresses our machine gun would fire a burst across the road in front of the cab. The truck would come to a screeching halt and the driver jumped out and got under the truck. As the machinegun put rounds across the road we could step over into the trailer from the top of the road shoulder and "liberate" a few brand new air mattresses for our own use. The Air Cav went to war in style.

From daylight to dark, from hour to hour, from day to day, from month to month, from year to year, in Vietnam, the American Soldiers, America's brothers and sisters fought valiantly and gave all of themselves while the politicians were frolicking in Washington, living big, getting fat, getting rich, corrupt to the core while wasting America's most sacred youth and blood. Never have so few protected so many unworthy, undeserving souls. These were the days that America lost its innocence, its honor and its courage, its moral leadership for a few schillings, these were the days that began the fall of a great, honorable, God given nation.

I to want to lift up Hal Moore, I want to lift up another leader that was cut from the same cloth and that is Dick Winters, I recently watched a video with Moore and when you look at both of them side by side they talk the same even their mannerisms are alike! but the bottom line is they were both Great leaders of there men and they will both be missed! If some of you don't agree with me thats fine this is just what I believe!

Who wouldn’t want to run up this hill to piss in his coffe cup. Yes Dick Winters is a GREAT MAN. One of the best why he rose through the ranks. Remember when he passed his old captain. Xray was no doubt a very fierce and bloody battle. The statement that it was the bloodiest battle of the war is certainly open to challenge. It can be classified as the first major battle of the war and one of the bloodiest battles of the war. The Marines may have something to say about it and other units would certainly make a good case for the battles they fought being in the category of the bloodiest. The 173rd Airborne Brigade fought in a number of very bloody and fierce battles in their 6 1/2 years in Vietnam, but none worse than the Battle of Dak To/Hill 875 in November 1967. Of course it could be said that I am biased as much as Joe Galloway , which is true. I served two tours with the Sky Soldiers. I don't mean for a second to take anything away from the IA DRANG battle and its brave men or from Hal Moore, I just question the statement of subjectivity that Xray was the bloodiest battle of the war.

I wasted 55 minutes listening to these men congratulating each other for a failed mission. The REAL hero from the Battle of the Ia Drang was SP/4 Willard Parrish who killed over 100 NVA soldiers attacking Moore's Battalion from the rear. He saved; the resupply area (Where Crandall and Freeman were dropping off supplies), the aide station where dozens of soldiers were wounded and Moore's command section. Moore gave 3 Medals of Honor to officers who killed LESS than 8 NVA (Marm) and Parrish received a Silver Star. LTC McDade's 2/7th absolute slaughter isn't mentioned when these "heroes" get together! The NVA learned how to fight us from that battle--we learned NOTHING! The Special Forces commanders from two SF Camps warned the 1st CAV about the massif and were IGNORED! Major Donald E. Zlotnik, SF Retired. (A LOT of very bad American leadership took place that day.)

...and then when Moore and Galloway returned to Vietnam after the war and met with Lieutenant General An to discuss the battle like it was a damn football game I was disgusted. When I asked Galloway why Moore did that he said it was for "Closure." Many mighty fine men DIED during that fight in the 1st CAV and when you study the battle it becomes evident our leaders were arrogant and unprepared. We learned nothing, Moore became a LTG from Galloway's hype and LTC An became a LTG because he outfought us and learned how to defeat us.

The initial intelligence stated there were 200 VC in that area. Intelligence was wrong. Turns out it was 2000 - 3000 PARVN, regular Army from Noth Vietnam. Well trained and ready to fight. I was assigned to Company B 2/7, I was on the last group of Helicopters that came in just before dark. We spent the night in and around the dry creek bed. Later the next day we moved into where Charlie company 1/7 had been, they had taken the full force of several attacks and was badly malled and were unable to remain effective as a company. I was one of the first replacements for the 2/7 and had been in-country 19 days, I was 10 days past my 18th birthday. I fought with some of the braves men I have ever known, solid NCO's, competent officers and a commanding officer that was the finest commander I have ever served with in my 22 years, Gary Owen.

Here's Denny's story. I avoided the war at all cost. I knew it was BS as a teenager and that I wasn't going to waste my life for something that did not matter to Americans...and really a lot of Vietnamese. I am proud that I stood up for myself and was willing to deal with the consequences that could result from one avoiding the draft in the US. Patriotism has more than one face. Life IS important but tell that to the US Government. The reality for these guys is that they did NOT fight for my freedom, save me from anyone or anything and preserve my lifestyle. That's all delusional propaganda and BS. A country the size of North Dakota, almost 8000 miles across the Pacific Ocean on the Asian mainland meant nothing to the US...whether we won or lost. These guys should just be glad they survived and take their "stories" quietly with them. They did not have a right or legitimate reason to be there...so what story needs to be shared...really?

The people of south Vietnam asked for help just like the people of South Korea ask for help in the United States Helped as much as possible to keep people free with liberty and justice. When south Vietnam fell 2 years after the United States left you should speak to those people in South Vietnam and ask them what they think as they were sent to reeducation camps, thousands murdered and the rest of them have no liberty since then. Speak to the people of south VietnamI remember John Carrie saying there would be no collateral damage but eventually after south Vietnam fell because the Congress of the United States did not pack them up in anyway with ammunition and supplies as Nixon said he would !! Even though all American soldiers had left Vietnam the Democrat Congress reneged on the promised to keep supplies and ammunitions going to South Vietnam to give them a chance to fight for their liberty. After South Vietnam fell Pol Pot with a comma rules murdered over 1 million Cambodian peopleI believe you yourself would like to help if you were being beaten to death as the south Vietnamese people were after they fell to the evils of communism of the north
