    When I was with the 82nd I met two MOH holders. One got it from his service in Nam the other in WWII with Merrill's Marauder's. Both did not speak about it. When we were required to be in class "A"s the one who received it in WWII had served for almost 30 years. He had a chest full of ribbons having served in combat in several wars. Unlike most from our company who were clerks, he was former infantry. Clerks seldom get medals. I will never forget the faces and comments by new guys especially young officers, who saw his multi colored awards and realized that he had the MOH. He was a thick barreled chested man with a very quiet nature who stayed to himself. Only God knew what he had endured.

      I was at Bragg in SF in the late 80s. I’m from Alabama, and had the pleasure of meeting two MOH holders both from Alabama; Ola Mize and Bob Howard. Both colonels who took a liking to me because I was from their home. Col Mize won his in Korea, Col Howard in Vietnam. Incredible men, it’s an honor to know them.

The only scenes before they went Nam that I believe were not accurate were the ones with the Sergeant greeting the Sergeant Major ( in the movie they where near the Infantry School Hq not Sand Hill ) and when they got on the Buses ( that was in front of the Airborne School Building and they would have boarded at Sand Hill where the 1st Cav's barracks were at) Of course I can forgive these errors as the old WWII barracks at Sand Hill were long a memory when this was filmed. One other that I am not certain of was the scene where the RTO picked up the signal from Nam, I don't believe they trained in one of the post picnic areas

    I know this is 9 years after the fact but for those that might not know, having a medal of Honor is one of the few cases where a soldier will get saluted by a superior officer first. character was based off this Soldier.....Robert Lewis Howard (July 11, 1939 - December 23, 2009) was a highly-decorated United States Army Special Forces officer and Medal of Honor recipient of the Vietnam War.
      He was wounded 14 times over 54 months of combat, was awarded the Medal of Honor, eight Purple Hearts, a Distinguished Service Cross,[a] a Silver Star, and four Bronze Stars.
      He was nominated for the Medal of Honor three separate times over a 13-month period but received lesser medals for the first two nominations, which were for actions performed in Cambodia where the U.S. was fighting covertly. He received the Medal of Honor for his actions on November 16, 1967 in North Vietnam, his third nomination.[2]
      He retired from the US Army after 36 years of service as a full colonel, and the most highly decorated service member on active duty.[3]

    That was a funny scene but during my entire career I never not one time ever saw a boot Lt. ever even attempt to chew out or order around a senior NCO, especially one with combat tours. It just never happened. You have to remember something about the Army chain of command; Most senior officers, BN XO's, BN CO's had combat experience and they survived for the most part because of their NCO's in combat. There was a lot unwritten respect and a lot of almost secretive allowances between senior officers and senior NCO's that no Boot Lt. was going to get in the middle of and it didn't take them long to figure that out. I saw more than one Plt. Sgt or 1st. Sgt put a boot Lt. in his place and when I moved up in the ranks I did it myself a few times. Most officers I had were good smart leaders and I can think of very few who crossed that line.

    So one day he and another SSG each was new to the unit (we'll can this guy SSG Edwards) are talking just a general friendly conversation about land nav, combat techniques and what works best. Well somewhere along the way they disagree on some point about something. SSG Edwards tells SSG Bills how would you know anyway. SSG Edwards tells him he knows better because he went to ranger school.
    So the SSG Bills gets up and walks away. About 15 minutes later SSG Bills returns wearing a different BDU top with every badge you could think of. Ranger, special forces, mountaineer, air assault, air borne, Expert Infantry Badge.

    Lots of people have noted this never happened, but it is more about the stories people tell. In the military and everywhere we tell exagerated stories in order to make a point, and those fake stories are often as believed as what really happened. I enjoy the movie since I was teaching miliary personel in Korea when it came out, and once even taught at Camp Gary Owen. Never been in the military but is shows the relationship of a top NCO in relation to commisioned officers. I even had an E-9 in one of my classes, and he did get respect.

    Aside from the fact that no one has won two MoH since WW1, and that makes the scene not believable, the other fact is that IF anyone actually ran around with two of these , that soldier would be known by name through out the US military and most likely the country.
    As if some new lieutenant wouldn’t know he’s commanding the platoon with “two MoH sergeant”.
    I’m not American, but I know what this medal means to Americans and and those who serve. As such I found the scene unnecessarily over the top. Had they made it believable and let him have only one MoH it would have been a really good scene and even better, somewhat plausible.
    As it is the MoH, as a symbol, is made a prop in a silly dude-bro scene.

    • @lennyfritz736
      @lennyfritz736 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is probably why the deleted the scene. We Were Soldiers was a pretty accurate movie, and the people making it did a good job sticking to history (for once). They probably cut it out once they realized that that scene would be historically inaccurate.

      I've had 2nd Lts who made that one look like a seasoned vet. They're a particular kind of stupid when they get the bar, and it was our job as NCO's to finish their education, so they wouldn't get us all killed in the LZ.

    Say what you want about Gibson - he knows how to make a movie that keeps you glued to the screen! PS. If you want to show how "badass" a particular character is then do not even show him directly or talk about him - make a story about a third guy who is an absolute badass himself, and just tell he was (QUOTE): "scared sh*tless whenever they named the guy you want to present as "THE" toughguy". Nice "movie trick" - from a time back, when movies still had a good script, good plot, awesome actors and perfectly delivered lines to make a point.
