Imagine you're 13 year old David Marks. A typical junior high student walking the halls of your local school---and a Capitol recording artist! You're kind of a big deal on campus. You can't get to class without girls fawning all over you and fellow classmates wanting your autograph. Your notoriety has caught the attention of the school's football team to the point that they want to beat you up and cut off your beautiful locks because they are jealous of you. But the fact is---this was the reality of rock stars then. People today don't realise just how young rock and roll was in the early 60s! This was music made by kids FOR kids! But this illustrates a larger issue on how much pressure there was for young performers at the time. They had to find a way to balance touring, recording, and school work all at once. Not to mention, being mobbed everyday at school as a campus celebrity! I don't know too many 40 year olds who could handle that. Some of them simply dropped out of school. I think Murry found a solution for Carl. Sent him to Hollywood Professional School to tutor him
I've often wondered if he looked like an old man when he was a teenager! I've never seen anyone bald so early in life! Maybe he stayed bald when he was a baby!

Marks and Carl were roughly on the same skill level. No question Carl was the lead guitarist in lathe lineup but this clip most definitely shows Marks picking. Now, having said that, since it’s not a real live performance, they may have switched parts for kicks. I saw the 50th Anniversary in 2012 and David Marks did all the leads, flawlessly. He has some videos out (very educational) and he explains the two Fender guitars role in this sound. David is quite knowledgeable and has a gentle spirit about him.
Although this clip is really a lip-synched one, the usual roles were maintained. David is playing a boogie rhythm figure in power chords( a traditional blues based technique) and Carls is playing the guitar solo.

Moved to southern California in August, 1962. Required dress, school or anywhere, was a plaid Pendleton and white Levis. I recall they didn't sell Levis, white or denim blue, in New England at that time.
