This Tesla Update Was Badly Needed! Would Have Saved My Collision

  • Recently, our Model Y received a new software update that greatly improved the on screen visualizations called High Fidelity Park Assist. About 3 months ago, my wife Kathy hit a pole with her front bumper/nose in a mall parking garage ever so gently, but it still caused damage. Both Kathy and I firmly believe that if she had the software then that she has now, this accident would not happened. Watch to see the whole story. This is a huge jump in technology and performance from the vision only system. While this is super good, we still believe that Tesla needs a camera in the front bumper down low, and they need to tie the data it is seeing both in the front and the rear to automatic braking like many other cars have as standard equipment. Even though, this is a huge increase in benefits to all of who drive Tesla's.

Kathy & Dave, Radar (would really help with driving in fog, heavy rain, snow, bad lighting), Ultrasound proximity sensors (could’ve saved the day with this dent and protect small dogs like Bailey). Tesla cheapened out; these two technologies should be in every car today.

The new Park Assist may work better for walls, posts, and taller objects, but does not work AT ALL for parking curb blocks that you encounter in many parking lots, at least for the Model 3. It is giving me the most extreme STOP warnings when I am still a couple of feet from the parking curb. You have to be VERY careful with the front fascia on the Model 3 because the low profile puts it at serious risk with these concrete parking curb blocks. Tesla is NOT a top tier carmaker without the ultrasonic sensors. This has to be the DUMBEST thing they ever did removing these.

Absolutely right. Any object that is shorter in height than the front lip of the car will disappear as the car approaches it. The camera may see it at some distance and warn you, but not when the car is closer than a certain point (depending upon the object's height). This was also true of the ultrasonic sensors, by the way. I remember testing my Model S to see how close i could be before the sensors lost "sight" of a curb. It would get very close but at some point. the sensor's beam would no longer hit the object. But it would have to be very close. And while it worked, as you say, the sensor measured the distance in inches, pretty accurately.

    • @a-don13

its funny cuz ultrasonic sensors would not help you with that lol. Vison based park assist with more training will be the ideal solution for that and any type of parking, as long as they add a camera on the bumper.

Here’s the thing though, this is in perfect conditions. This vision only is still extremely limited in rainy & snowy conditions. For example last week in the DC area we got a little bit of snow, maybe only about a half an inch to an inch. It wasn’t even really enough that it stuck to the main roads & even on side roads it was still drivable. However the roads were wet & the little bit of snow & water splashed up on my car making both front & rear cameras useless. However when parking my sensors still worked perfectly.
Now I’ve been driving for 37 years so I know how to use my mirrors to park & learning how to drive in Chicago I’ve always been a defensive driver. However if Tesla wants to keep marketing themselves as a top safety pick they need to go back to putting sensors on their cars because in bad weather vision only just isn’t ever going to be as reliable as sonar.

I have the same experience of a vast improvement on my Model 3 LR Highland here in Sweden with the new update. Got mine 6 December and after that some updates were released and with those improvements the car is much more accurate in warning and showing the correct surroundings. Now it even beeps at sidewalks and snow barriers in front of it because the car remembers it's something there even if the camera can't actually see the obstacles. Very impressing updates. Now you have to watch the wallet David, because Kathy no longer has to be afraid parking the car shopping... 😂

That's an impressive update. I still don't like that they felt the need to cut corners on front and rear sensors in favor of cameras. Saves you such a small amount per car while tarnishing the experience. That seems to be some what of a trend for Tesla's and why I choose a different EV. Additionally with Tesla once they discount the car it's public (vs dealer discounted MSRP) so your resell value drops in line with that as anyone could just get that deal (vs negotiating it directly with a dealer that wants to make it move). I see where some buyers would prefer not dealing with a dealer network but pegging them against each other has been much better for me.

I'm torn here. It's a post not in a blind spot on the car and you want the car to tell you to stop before hitting it. I understand the issue - I would be more sympathetic if it was in the rear of the car where you don't have a clear view of the big honking post right in the middle of the car that you are obviously close to. Remember - cameras, sensors, etc. are driving aids - you are supposed to gauge the distance with your good old analog vision in your head - and you don't really need to be 2 inches away from the post - 12 inches or even 24 inches would have you firmly in the spot.

    • @TJPavey
      @TJPavey 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

While this is true here, there are times where being as close as possible is beneficial. Maybe the spot you are in is a bit shorter due to an obstacle that is guarded by one of these poles and you want to pull all the way in to avoid getting hit in the back by bad drivers. Maybe your garage is tight and you need to pull within a few inches of something.
Yes cars don’t have this back in the day but it’s standard fare now and Tesla made a mistake by cutting radar and ultrasonic. The biggest problem is for those that have those sensors in their cars that Tesla just disabled. At least if you buy a car with vision only you understand the possible limitations.

The Vision Only system did not "see" such a pole if it is a litte smaller because of the missing font bumper camera and USS. You just drove it over which has happened to a friend of mine. This is especially a problem if the car starts from "off" after parking because it "forgets" the drive earlier on into the parking lot. This Vision Only parking is also no nearly precise enough...The whole system has no chance compared to a modern 360 degree parking system (with USS and cameras in the front bumper and in the mirrors facing downwards) from a "conventional" car (e.g. BMW)...

And if you use Tesla insurance with driver score, won't they ding you for ignoring the false early warnings?

It better than before, however just bring back the ultra sonic sensors please and a front bumper camera. Why do Tesla have to "fix" something that is not broken? Oh, and bring back the turn signal stalks too!!!

I have seen this same thing with my 2022 Model 3.
But my biggest concern with the future of this technology is Musk’s disdain for, and dismissal of, the need for radar in Full Self Driving. There is no way in Hell that FSD with vision-only can safely operate a car without radar as a back-up, at least in bad weather conditions such as heavy rain and dust.
My first Tesla was a 2020 M3P with $8000 FSD. I traded it for the 2022 hoping to recover my FSD premium cost (plus several other improvements such as the heat pump). But despite all of the improvements in the ability of FSD since I traded, it appears to be far from the capabilities needed to make me think it will ever achieve certification from the NTSB or whatever regulatory agency would have jurisdiction to approve it for operation without a driver in the front seat ready to take control of the car at all times. And at least to me, unless one has an almost daily long commute, FSD is simply a fantasy both as to its potential usefulness and to its prospects for future certification.
Being “close” to good enough is not good enough for me to pay the huge price!

You may be able to fix your bumper by using a heat gun on the inside or a good hairdryer. I would suggest taking the bumper off and heating it up from the backside. You should be able to get some help by searching this up on TH-cam.

They just need to add a camera in the front bumper…my Mercedes EQS 580 SUV has one and I use it every time parking. We own a Y also, love the car, but it needs a front bumper camera…and then it would be perfect.

Having a bumper that could survive a millimeters per minute collision without damage would help too.

Tesla never should have removed the ultrasonic sensors before they had a software solution. My brother had the exact same problem with his new model Y. Shame on Tesla.

A lot of people are whining in the Facebook Tesla groups that they hate it because it's "blob-like". It's a 3D visualization/heat map and it's much better in my personal opinion.

tesla needs to bring back the Ultra Sonic Sensors and reactive the ones they disabled on cars that have them. this situation you are showing us Dave is also affecting the Summon feature. the summon feature has become where it's useless even in an empty open school parking lot. my car didn't know which direction to move and would stop with no objects around, just grass Lanscape.

I was always hitting things in my old Model S WITH THE SENSORS. They really sucked at parking curbs and bumper hitches on pickup trucks. My new Model S without the sensors is soooo much better. I've had the car for five months now and have not hit a thing.

You do need to understand, getting closer with the warning, stop.... Is training the computer to adjust its warning to be not as safe.. letting you get closer, increases the risk in future

While it is an improvement over the first take software, it’s still not an improvement over the USS, and definitely not an improvement over a combo USS and front camera(bumper/grill) setup.
Still a bad move to remove a feature, with the “promise” of a better replacement.
