Toucan breeders wont tell you about this drastic personality change they have after their first months. Find out more in today's video!
The Spiderman edits had me cackling. Especially the “you’re trash, Brock” 😂😂😂
Urban rescue ranch made a whole thing about his rhea constantly attacking him and making him bleed. His channel blew up because people were watching him get mauled by his pet. I think it's important that you show what it's really like living with them.
Now his ostriches are keeping Kevin in line, but now the kangaroo is really feeling his oats
RIP big ounce, a local legend of the Urban Rescue branch 😢
I have a pet duck who I ended up with against my will. Ducks, like geese, will try to bite you. Ducks also have tendencies to harass dogs. They do not make good pets, I always tell people not to get ducks. Ducks are smart but you cannot UNtrain a duck. Once they learn a behavior, it’s likely going to become a permanent part of their routine.
It used to hurt my feelings when my parrots bit me….took some time to realize they are just emotionally unstable toddlers that just want to bite you sometimes 😂. Thanks for spreading awareness of the not so nice side of bird ownership! ❤
They are wild and miss to be free. Why do you need to slave tropical birds?
It's a testament to toucans that you're explaining how you keep getting mauled by these birds and my first reaction to seeing it is "aw, they're so cute!"
They are very cute and beautiful as ornery as they may be!
Leaving more of the bites (or attempted bites) in from now on seems like a good idea! It shows the everyday reality of owning and interacting with toucans, namely that even though they’re lovely, they’re still lovely assholes. You do a great job already with advocating that people not get pet toucans, but actually seeing how even with human friendly toucans bites are a constant hazard, it speaks louder then words as a warning.
Props to you for getting chomped for science on screen for us, dude.
Still love them, even after watching this video. They're just hormonal scissor birds. And they can sound like machine guns as well. I ofc won't get one as a pet but I do love seeing people taking care of them lol
So basically, they are forever watching for weakness, lurking in the branches like little velociraptors XD
Still love them. From a distance.
Does this mean that Toupac and Ripley were exceptions, or was it because of age or toucan species? ..Or select filming of moments when they were on their best behaviors? XD
I mention in the video that toupac and Ripley were the same way. I just typically film and edit around them. Toupac wasn't as bad just because of his health issues though.
@@2CANTV The power of editing - making velociraptors seem cuddly :D
Birds are not dinosaurs! They are birds and never were anything else. Science fact, through DNA and how it all works.
@@jdearing46 All birds are dinosaurs, but not all dinosaurs were birds. Hope that helps.
@@jdearing46agree, this dino bird fantasy is getting annoying.
Translation: they’re certified nutcases.
I literally LOLed at this comment 🤣
This reminds me of Ben from the Urban Rescue Ranch and his Rhea Kevin. Really puts into perspective that these guys evolved from dinosaurs
Youve got to love them even with the split personalities and the violence. You have to be the right type of person for them. Also you cany be afraid of being hurt, I have a pair of curlcrests and they can get out of hand. My male tried to take an eye last spring and curls are cute and cuddlie compared to the big toucans.
Very interesting. My African Grey parrot would bite me hard intentionally and look me into the eyes afterward making sure I got the message. He would bite for a reason when I did something wrong, that he did not like- for example being taken back into his cage when did not want to, etc. I got him to stop by pretending to cry as if badly hurt, and looking at him while pretending to cry and showing him the part of my body that he bit, usually a finger. I would do this for a whole minute or so! It worked because while he was biting me purposefully he did not want to hurt me seriously. With a Toucan, if as you say they are bullies by nature, this approach would not work. I wonder though. Nice video, thanks.
Parrots are capable of compassion and understand the concepts of kindness and selflessness, so it's no wonder that it worked.
the more i learn the more i am happy i got lucky with my cockatiel. he was kept with his parents and weened naturally by the parents.
I was surprised to find that out of my most exotic pets, my kookaburra is pretty easy going so far. My hornbills are not easy 😅
Thank you for this video! I know very little about birds as pets and I did NOT understand how often you were editing out toucan bites!
Hey Brock, thanks for all you do for these precious creatures 👍
A great demonstration with toucans and how the only reason you should ever take any in is if: you're capable of giving the real care and space for them to thrive, able to give part of your life to, and most importantly - are insane enough. ;) These aren't tiny dogs you can pamper and put in a purse. Not these chaotic dinosaurs.
Wonderful explanation of why they suffer so much if not given a careful diet…she is so beautiful
Universal Studios sells Jurassic Park safari hats online. Maybe that will give the back of your head some protection lol.
But also wanted to say that Rhea's red beak is coming in so beautifully!
I'm not locked in here with you! You're locked in here with me!
Man, I worry sometimes that you're gonna open a video and be wearing an eyepatch and we'll all know what happened lol. Best of luck with the murder birds.
Thank you for making this video, I know these birds are more than I can handle so I'm glad there's people like you making videos about them so I can appreciate them from afar. Honestly, one of the main things that keeps me away from exotic pets is just that I live in the middle of nowhere, it's hard enough to find a qualified vet for my cat or dog let alone a toucan.
I know there are a lot of differences between toucans and parrots, but parrots will guard resources too and attack you when you try to feed them. What worked for me was getting a different cage for my parrot to sleep in and then I can clean his big cage and get his food and water all set up before I get him up for the day. Otherwise I was getting bit every time I put my hand in the cage, even to bring him food! And you deserve a lot of respect for rescuing these birds and giving them the best life possible!!
It helps to remember that birds are dinosaurs. Then suddenly, it makes a little more sense.
This reminds me of some stories by my brother in law who used to work in the parrot enclosure of a zoo. Basically, some of the birds were jerks and weren't allowed to be around patrons during the hours people were allowed to go inside and feed the birds.
You made the right decision, we do our best to prevent unnecessary suffering in our beloved animal companions. Even though it is a right decision, it is always a very hard decision every single time. Much love to you in this time. Give yourself the grace and time to mourn. I had to make this decision for my beloved 17 yr old cat this July. So I somewhat get how you feel right now.
This is really interesting! like its the opposite for dogs, bitey when they are little but calm and sweet as they age.
Soooo basically they’re just a tiny T-rex 🦖🦖🦖🦖
This is the best advice about 2 cans, he knows what he is talking about.
Your aviary is so cool!
i would make a puppet with a tucan beak so i could battle them XD
Sir so Beautiful bird
I pretty regularly feed eels (specifically NZ long fin eels) and I'd feel more comfortable sticking my hands in front of a carnivorous eel (they do have teeth, many people claim they don't, they do. They are very short, very sharp teeth) than a toucan. The bites are almost all accidental. The worst I had was one biting my thumb after mistaking it for a piece of sausage, but it let go after a second or so.
Brock: Would the biting go down if you were a chain mail sleeve or armor?
Now im curious
Are they usually outright agressive animals or is it like territorial or instincts of something being not like their species and wanting to distance themselves because of it? Or maybe the strong sence of independence or all just hormonal
I wonder whats going through their brains
Also is it abit hard or stressful to take care of them (dont worry i dont plan on getting one
Im fine with sticking to a kingsnake uwu)
Naturally agressive yes, in a way. The social structure, behavior in their flocks is kinda similar to the Klingon society. Toucans do spend much time with non-serious fights, like sparring, with each other.
They're just general bullies even to their own species. Like the poster said before me, they spend a lot of time fencing with their flock mates as a social behavior. But they also tend to dominate and bully any other animal in the vicinity- especially other birds. We perhaps don't notice because we're so familiar with seeing them now... But can you imagine being another bird or animal and a bird with that kind of beak comes at you? Even though it's not as comparatively strong as a parrots may be, they rely on intimidation and confidence when approaching other animals. My best guess is that they consider me as part of the flock and they interpret biting me as a playful challenge...the problem is I don't have a tough beak to meet them at their level. They typically go after my hands because I suspect that's what they equate to my "beak", being what I use to manipulate objects like they do with theirs.
@@2CANTV yes, they probably try to spar with out. I wonder what would happen, if you wear a bite proof glove (like a butchers glove) and actually fight back....
@@tobiaswichert4843 He would have to institute his own reign of terror and the birds would then be fleeing and not thinking about biting the boss.
One of my cockatiels is the same, but both of them have times of the year when they’re very bitey, especially at moulting times 😂
I dont get what you mean...
Bad pets? Youre giving your whole explanation and they just go out of their way to help prove your point! Such helpful animals!
From an evolutionary perspective, I guess this aggression is meant to keep everything in the jungle away from them. They could be very vulnerable, but if bigger predators learn that toucans are huge assholes not worth messing with, the toucan is safer as a species.
Is this maybe related to the social fencing behaviour? Im curious what would happened if you had some gloves and plastic tongs to see if they would fence with you
I guess this is a stupid question, but is there some reason you don't wear some leather gloves and cap? I'm aware that parrot trainers say you shouldn't wear bite-proof gloves because that teaches the parrot helplessness; but you say that toucans cannot be trained, anyway.
Or better yet eye protection. I bet they aim for the eyes if they can.
Welders gloves and some sort of bike or hockey helmet 🤨
I'll be honest I think I prefer seeing them like this? Its "entertaining" in a different way, but also Good grief they are little Monsters 😅 Adorable but yes.
Good to see you still posting I haven't been here since Tupac passed
So, flying toddlers with bike horns and garden shears, vs Macaws that have bolt cutters.
Peace was never an option
This video makes me feel less bad that we cant keep toucans here in Australia. But to be honest i think id still keep them if i could. Theyre so beautiful its worth the pain (i think)
Keeping any kind of bird as a pet is sick and you people disgust me
I have a keel billed toucan I got him as a baby he use to let me get him and he would fly on my arm but now at one year old he bites a little more and doesn’t really let me have him on my arm but some days he’s mad and some days he is friendly
My girlfriend and I were HOWLING within 30 seconds.
aaa Look at the little Predators they are so cute
i wanna pet them even if it comes at the cost of a finger
Oh yes definitely leave biting in. People need to start getting wake up calls that animals are living beings and not animated toys that just want to cuddle. All those "cute animal videos" accounts are doing a huge disservice. I know that a lot of people just want to see something cute for 3 sec and forget about it, but at least half will get their mind made with them wanting to get a pet thinking they're only gonna get the good and cute stuff.
What are your thoughts on tapajaridae? It's a family of pterosaurs that are similar to toucans
I never heard that about bird formula . Although toucan isn’t native in my neck of the woods so it makes sense. Do you think the essential oil sprays help about when birds are hormonal ?
I think it would be a good idea to wear heavy duty gloves and a welders jacket to protect your skin and to stop you from leaking red fluid so much
You know what the best part about having Toucans? Toucan play at that game.
I donated to the Remembering Ripley fund but never got my feather. I have emails as proof of donation
Two Toucan bite you very hard ,your Hand is bleeding ouch is actually not good, but your Video just awesome! :)
they hunger for the hand that feeds
❤
Is Ripley nicer than most toucans? He doesn't seem aggressive.
Grabbing the fat on the back of the arm !!! That’s evil lol
I wonder, is this similar to when Toucans "beak fence" with one another? Is it possible they are exhibiting this same behavior towards you (and winning! 😂)
Cute little psychos😈🤪 Why don't you wear a falconry glove to protect your hands, and maybe fence back to establish yourself as a leader of the flock; I remember you fenced with Ripley
I have done that in the past but I've grown worried that I'm perhaps encouraging the behavior. It may be worth testing again to see what kind of change it makes though.
@@2CANTV No one knows better than you but if they live in flocks then they manage to get along with each other somehow. 🤷♀️
Someone should invent something that covers your arm. Maybe make it out of leather. That way you can protect your hand.
Leather welders gloves would be a good start.
do you think your birds bite because theyre trying to fence you? maybe they're trying to see where you fall on the pecking order
I'll stick with my sweet cockatiel.
Nacho and Lalo. There needs to be a hector and a Gus
i think she's like this cuz she cant express her love properly so she bites you lol
Well, gosh, thanks. Who'd have thunk? The enclosure is gorgeous. You can just buy a 2can?
i think most of his birds are rescues
I know you state that they dont go near u as often and that they often lunge at u; but when they dont behave like that theyre still pretty chill around u and obviously care a great deal for u right? I ask because i just always remember seeing videos of how sweet and lovable toupac was to u and the other birds and he was the oldest bird u owned at the time.
Cats: I love and hate you at the same time, go away.
Toucans: I love and hate you at the same time, I'm gonna kill you now.
And still there are people taking a pet tiger or something like that.
It would be awesome to see them at a zoo...like Ft Worth
I always thought, I'd never find an animal I'd have the heart to hunt, not for sport nor for food unless I had no choice for sustenance.. But these birds right here may be a contender (just dark humour don't worry I still wouldn't lol.)
So you say they're bullies, but can you bully them back? Is it like a dominance thing with them? Like where if they try something and you react back to it (probably not reasonable to try to bite a toucan back I imagine) with force, will they back off or would it make it worse?
You can kinda fence with them and push them away like I did with my arm. But I'm hesitant to encourage them to continue to bite my hands by "fighting back". Turning the tables and chasing them back does help them chill but I'm worried about encouraging behavior too much.
@2CANTV if the behaviour has never seemed to get better via avoidance, I'd give it a try
The birds have no chill
Will this behavior prevent you from taking one along on an educational talk/presentation?
They tend to be more reserved and submissive when they're out of their element so it would likely be okay if I did that some day. But there's always a chance they could get comfortable with doing talks with me and then behave that way. It's hard to say but I've thought about that too.
And to think, you could have had a cat 😉
for toucans every movement is sus, at least they do not attack or jump at anyone unless you try to touch them
I wonder if they're trying to fence you.
Gloves. My 2 cents.
are toucans worth for a pet if you can take care of one
and how many toucans do you must have
You need a lot of time and space for them, and be able to put up with everything he described in this video. Not a good idea for a suburban family with busy lives.
She is being very mean today 🥺
She's mean every day. You just don't typically see that part 😉
@@2CANTV yes 😊 true
Keeping birds as pets taught me ONE thing... THEY DON'T BELONG IN CAGES!!!
Why his name is Disembodied Brock:
😂bully Toucans ❤
Need to sneak some kefir coated fruit to them (for their gut bacteria). /random youtube comment
Y do they hunt u down? Thats weird.
She has attitude .
Why do they hunt you?
They're nasty little guys that like to spar with their neighbors, and they are also predators that will eat anything that moves that will fit in their belly.
XD who said bird Arent smart... There cute but man they are Mean XD
Do they attack your camera sometimes. Or they know its not worth it XD
Need to wear metal gloves when dealing with them
Why not leather gloves?
He'd need chainmale gloves
I was thinking the same thing but I imagine them trying to rip it off lol
I have gloves I wear sometimes.
He needs Kevlar gloves
I'm worried about you. Brock, honey, you seem so stressed and sad.
These are not domesticated pet birds. They should be kept in large planted aviaries like in this video. People guy them as they look cute and its a new thing, but they are being selfish and its cruel to the birds. Nearly all of them are taken from the nest for hand rearing. This imprints them onto humans, and leads to a lot of the aggressive and sexual behaviour problems...because they think they are humans. If they were left with their parents to wean and and then adopted they would make better pets as they would have some fear of humans and not want to mate or fight with us.
This is the same with parrots that are hand reared. It should be illegal to do this as it creates so many behavioural problems and unhappy birds when they reach sexual maturity.
i agree with you but also some animals are just naturally more aggressive and toucans seem to be one of them. like he said in the wild these are mostly solitary birds and they live in jungles, they're tough birds with fierce instincts
I think toucans are a little stubborn and I see why you don’t recommend them as pets
Why are you not wearing gloves? They even have specialty gloves that prevent cuts from knives and blades, and they are not expensive. Wear those and stop getting scars, for a very small price.
ya shouldn't edit out the biting
really the term "pet" shouldn't be applied to non-domesticated species at all
people think they can get a toucan or tiger or whatever and it'll be a "pet"
but it won't... it'll be "tamed" but even if you care for it from birth it'll never be "domesticated"
it'll always have the instincts of a wild animal
leads to so many sad situations and suffering
creates an industry based around selling animals that will never be pets to people who are naïve or just want one because they like the idea
in this sense there's no difference between a cobra, alligator, or a toucan
just toucans look cute, but they're just as wild as a cobra
want an exotic pet? get a hedgehog, or a ferret, or llama or something.
otherwise you need a zoo exhibit in your home
We live in a world where logic has taken over people's common sense. Call it a "pet" and it must be a pet even if its a poisonous snake. I, having owned a parrot, an African Grey, for 26 years, have concluded that larger parrots should not be kept as pets. They are highly social and incredibly smart but not domesticated and should not be kept in cages in households. If I could do it again I would buy a little budgie or pair of lovebirds. I have an incredible bond with my bird, he has been hand raised by me from six weeks but he is independent thinking and treats me like an equal and expects me to treat him as equal which most of the time cannot be as I have to govern his life. I try to make up with love and bribes and it works most of the time, but that is the nature of the relationship.
@@sezwo5774 relatable
like i'm watching this because i love the animals
Greys are awesome, fascinating how smart they are
sounds like your grey is lucky, you seem to have an enlightened perspective on the reality of the bird and your relationship
@@andrewgrow5711 Thanks, ...it is complicated.
Cute little a**holes. When you mention birds regurgitating I think of Tupac trying to "feed" you.
wear light leather gloves....
Maybe shes like a Dog and you just have to show her youre above her. Maybe hold her beak shut or you need to lay her down to show dominance so youre the flock leader
So if all they do is bite you and offer absolutely zero affection why even have them? There's nothing you get back from them, there's no bond and all they do is bite you. Get rid of them. You're spending all your time, money and energy just to have a bunch of birds bite you. What do you get back from all the care you give them? You'd be an absolute moron to keep taking care of these birds just to get absolutely nothing back
So Toucans are assholes. lol
They bite because you hand feed them. Honest opinion.
...and they know it gets a reaction.
They're also aggressive predators in the wild which creates a much different temperment than most birds.
