Why Xbox Failed In Japan

  • Microsoft's Xbox consoles have become a global hit. But there's one market where they don't work - Japan. Of the 46.9 million Xbox Ones sold worldwide through the second quarter of 2019, just 0.3% of them have been in Japan, according to IDC. Meanwhile, Japanese companies Sony and Nintendo are popular with consumers.
When Microsoft announced it was developing a video game console, the industry was skeptical. In the ’90s, Microsoft was known for its software, not its hardware business.
Almost two decades later, Microsoft’s Xbox has become a popular console, holding its own against Sony and Nintendo.
But there’s one market where the Xbox hasn’t been a hit with consumers - Japan.
When Microsoft released the Xbox in 2001 in the United States, Japan was the gaming juggernaut of the world. It was home to the three big console makers, Nintendo, Sega and Sony, and had the best developers.
Microsoft faced three big challenges launching the Xbox in Japan. It had to convince Japanese developers to make games for Xbox, overcome consumers’ skepticism about the first edition’s bulky design, and make up for lost sales from launching after the holiday period.
Today, Microsoft still struggles to sell consoles in Japan. Of the 46.9 million Xbox Ones sold worldwide through the second quarter of 2019, just 0.3% of them have been in Japan, according to the International Data Corporation.
While Japan is a big market for video games, Dean Takahashi, the lead writer for GamesBeat at VentureBeat, said Microsoft doesn’t rely on Japanese consumers.
“Japan is still down, but they don’t actually need it to make billions of dollars,” Takahashi said.
In a statement to CNBC, Microsoft said Japan is an important part of its global gaming community.
“We’re committed to bringing innovative and homegrown content from Japan’s leading game creators to a global audience,” said Phil Spencer, Microsoft’s executive vice president of gaming, in a statement.
While Japanese consumers prefer Sony’s PlayStation or Nintendo’s Switch, Microsoft’s relationship with its Japanese competitors is changing. Watch this video to learn more about how Microsoft is working with Sony on the future of video gaming.

@@PrestonGarvey69 that was racist. And Tokyo marui is a Airsoft gun company, that sells better quality airsoft rifles than any other east or west companies. Infact most airsoft gun brands sells rip offs of a Tokyo marui design. It doesn't matter where a gun is made. It what matters is the designer designed the gun correctly. And the company producing the parts withholds the manufacturing specs of the design during production. And the gun owner to be smart and practicing safety measures. Eg don't load a round that's too hot for the gun to shot safely. There's plenty of American and russian made guns I wouldn't touch especially the bullpups they seem to constantly fail to chamber or fail to eject.

The only reason Xbox gained any foothold at all in Japan with the 360 was because of Sony's missteps. The PS3 was too difficult to program for, meaning that development costs were a lot higher. Many American developers would simply make their game for the 360 then port it to the PS3 later- and a few Japanese developers did the same (like Tri-Ace).

Mritunjoy Takhellambam how am I being an Xbox fanboy... I just stated that they sold out... this is the first time Xbox sold out in japan. Lemme guess you’re the sad criticism Xbox has no games even though we do and you have to pay extra for your games and one of your biggest games this generation last of us 2 got 3.4 metacritic score. Hmmm now let’s see you’re the type that says Bethesda is trash even though they have a good track record. You’re the type to say Xbox is anti consumer for putting Bethesda as exclusive after PS5’s 2 timed exclusives. Yes we have wait and see. And no they’re not neck and neck. Xbox is heading a different route. Subscriptions are the future believe it or not. PlayStation is still using the old strategy of buy once play. Big deal ps5 sold out in japan.. WhAt a ShOcKeR. You know cos I’m not a fanboy, I can easily say PlayStation has good games. Maybe not as good as fanboys say it is. But they’re good. Xbox, well. They’ll win anyway it’s all about money in the end and Xbox alone is worth nearly 6x of SONY. So take your pick for long term

@@carlosmartinez3020 you also forgot GeForce now for who can use it is much better than Google Stadia for mostly it doesn't over promise and underdeliver but also as it lets you change the graphics settings. So GeForce now is more so like a GPU compute cloud you can buy into for $5/month for just games that you bought on steam, epic, battle .net and probably some others.
To that nVidia did try what Google is trying now but it failed back in early 2007 when it tried it so they refined it and changed the business model to fit what we are willing to go with. The model nVidia is going with now seems to be working as $5/month is for a service without noticeable latency though you do have to be close to the server and you do have que lines to wait in, then you also have a limit on how long you single session can be until you go back into said que. Game streaming hasnt failed. It has just started to be popular a year ago. In places where the norm is fast internet, such here in sweden where most people have 100mbit it is actually very popular. I have at least 3 real life friends, except for myself that primarly play in the cloud: GeForce Now and Stadia. In places with slow or unreliable internet it is probably not an option, but many places have good stable internet this days
As game streaming gets more popular it also insentivising the building of better internet infrastructure. Just like 3D game leads to 3D graphics cards to become popular in the 1990s and now every gamer use them
Pros of game streaming: 1. zero install time. 2. Can never run out of disk space
Cons: non if you have stable and good internet which many people(but not all) have today.
Install GeForce and try it. You can try it for free without giving any credit card

I mean even here in the west its huge it was even stated in the video how mobile gaming is going to take and has currently taken a hold on the gaming market. Nintendo is doing well for that but mobile is much larger than that since everyone all over the world owns a smartphone mostly so easy and convenient to game. If you pay attention to the world around you then you can see people gaming on phones more often than you'd imagine.

I've had every Playstation except the PS3. I've had every xbox & now own an Xbox Series X. The PS2 & The Xbox 360 are my top 2 game consoles. I was more of a Playstation guy until I seen my friend playing the NCAA2K on the original Xbox & I seen it was actually a more advanced console strictly by comparing it to Nba2k on the PS2. On the PS2 2K only showed pictures at the end of the game, on the xbox they showed actual highlights from the game. That 1 thing blew my mind to see the realism. It played smoother also & graphics were a little better. I got the original xbox close to the end of that generation. I had been playing the PS2 the majority of that time. But the XBOX 360 COMPLETELY BLEW ME AWAY with the graphics, games, & gameplay. I feel like the way the Xbox360 caught up to the PS3 is because they started making games for both platforms. Originally GTA was only for the PS2. A lot of the good figgting games were only for the PS2. Xbox was more for shooters & sports. But XboxLive & Halo is what really connected gamers worldwide instead of just locally. The Dreamcast was in my top 3 game consoles also. The Xbox360 to me was like the Dreamcast 2.0 because it had those same next level graphics & smoothness. I feel like Sony is better for hardware & Microsoft is better for the software which is why it feels smoother

More like. Hey that's a good idea. I'll just take it. The Apple saga is one that best describes the modest if not insignificant insights that Gates possesses. Just like Apple OS Gates cloned the idea and remade it as his own. He saw the Sony Playstation and simply thought.. I can clone once so why not again. I have never understood why people give him such reverence. Completely undeserved in my opinion.

Also, let's remember MS tried to buy out Nintendo and they were laughed out of the office they were arrogant enough to assume that because Nintendo was not doing well it would be easy to buy out with no consideration to the worldwide fan base and it's loyal consumers so this must have had a negative effect back in Nintendo's home country I mean seriously it must have had an effect on how Japanese consumers saw MS if they pulled this stunt. As much as it was about console size or wariness of MS at the time that must have had some impact on the pick up of MS gaming products in the country at the time and likely has left a nasty taste in the mouths and memories of Japanese gamers as well. And it showed also that MS was being monopolistic as well at that time.
