  • Motorola Mobility has not wowed customers or reviewers since the Motorola Droid in 2009. Since then, the company has low on the smartphone market share charts. But the announcement of a new folding Razr smartphone has breathed new excitement into the company. It has left onlookers wondering if this phone could pull Motorola Mobility out of obscurity.

In America we Still don't have 4K LIVE HDTV in most markets, but ATSC 3.0 is Deploying very slowly.

Yep. They made the video solely based on the US market, while there are other countries where Motorola is still pretty successful (like Brazil). Another problem with that video is that they measure success in a very questionable way. For them, it looks like success is having 50%+ of the market share, what isn't true at all. In reality, a company can have, let's say, 3-10% of the market and be considered successful, if it has the ability to hold that share and be profitable.

yeah but there are a few aspects of them that really don't help. for instance (and I am sorry to say so), their famous customisability was an awful concept from the standpoint of making profit for the company. the weird fact that the volume buttons don't control the volume just like that but open up a threesome of onscreen volume sliders that make it necessary to pull the device out of your pocket, to take a good look at the screen, and to position your finger somewhere in order to finally adjust sound output by sliding vertically, that is a terrible thing whenever you are suddenly forced to silence a far-too-loud ringer during a meeting or in the dead of night.. the fact that these devices will simply refuse to charge the battery at any acceptable speed if you use any quick-charge brick that is not a Motorola-branded one (a quirk that Huawei devices suffer from in a similar fashion by the way), the fact that the newer version of a device has less good specs than the smartphone they released the year before, ...all kinds of things like this absolutely don't help the brand, people remember this kind of shortcoming and it affects their choice for their next smartphone purchase in a negative way

I have the same thing with one of my Samsung devices, but it has started after the phone got wet one day and I didn't let it dry sufficiently before starting to use it again. So it in fact is an indirect result of missing water proofing.

...I worked at Motorola enterprise networks RF business in 2005-2007 and remember meeting lots of very smart very dedicated RF people; including veteran remnants of the 'old Motorola". I learned so much. I was at a meeting in Schaumberg, Illinois in 2006 and remember this bright gentleman sitting in the front row near me. His name was Greg Brown and turned out he was going to be the new CEO! Motorola was having market struggles at that time and he went to the podium and talked about the future - splitting up Motorola whereby the new Motorola Solutions would go back to core business of providing mission critical voice and data solutions; and the Razor to Motorola Mobility. He said it was going to be "painful" but something that was needed to survive and get back to basics.. I was so impressed because he was honest.. I was a little over my head because RF and spectrum is very complex - so I departed and went back to the utility business. It was a great experience. Thank you Moto.

First, a cell phone is a radio transceiver then all of the other functions in your smart phone.are add ins. Motorola makes the best radios.

I swear the moon landing was on July 20, 1969 but on that video it says July 21, 1969

    • @carlthefriendlyllama2126

Great catch. The moon landing was July 20, 1969 so the video is wrong.

The moon landing transmission was received and rebroadcast from Australia, which is on the other side of the international date line from the United states. So both time stamps are correct, from a certain point of view.

Releasing the foldable Android phone might impress the consumers, but won't Samsung and IPhone compete by making their own version later?

    • @Tony-xz7bo

I certainly hope so. Competition is the only way to get these greedy corporations to innovate.

samsung already made their version but it failed so chances are apple won’t make one until the tech is ready

I remember back in the 90's when Motorola came out with the STAR TAC and then MICRO TAC with GSM capability. Motorola phones then were competing against Siemens, Nokia, Ericsson, Alcatel but Nokia had them all beat out. I moved to the US in the early 2000's and I couldn't believe that they have not heard of GSM before. GSM in Europe and in Asia was already up and running in the mid-90's.

I'm a Moto G fan. They build smooth affordable phones. I can afford to outright buy my phone rather than making expensive monthly payments. Moto is alive and well.

Good one CNBC. Motorola still makes great phones. They have introduced tech in the last few years that most of the other brands of phones are now using. In fact, I currently use a modern Motorola phone. Also, I do not work for them and are not being paid to say this. Just here to let people know that just because the media says it does not mean it is true.

Right, like the other companies aren't. A simple answer for simpletons, senior leadership in the phone division made some poor marketing decisions many years ago, then other companies were able to make cheaper phones that offered more things.

I worked in the cellphone biz from 1998-2004. Motorola not only built good products. They serviced them well too. I wish Motorola success in the future. Personally I prefer when Ericsson and Nokia built not only good phones, but all the switches and infrastructure equipment. Now companies from China like Huawei will just help China in it's covert world domination.
