- A day in the life of a Japanese Square Enix Game Illustrator. Square Enix is one of the top video game developers in Japan, creating ultra popular titles known-worldwide such as Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts and making it all happen, 3700 hard working employees. Today, we follow a Japanese Game Illustrator working in the Japanese game development company from morning until the evening. We show what a typical work day in Japan would be including her typical work hours as a Japanese game illustrator working for Square Enix. We also see her morning routine and after work hobbies. Also this is what it would be like working for a popular Japanese game company and the different staff you may come across during a typical work day. The Japanese game industry has so many different jobs so it was great to be able to show another job outside of game development and game programming. Rubi has been working as a video game illustrator in Japan for 6 years now. Even as a little girl she loved to draw but growing up couldn’t envision a proper career where she could pursue her passion. So she entered University majoring in a completely different field, but when her job hunting started, she discovered that there were prestigious Japanese companies were offering illustration jobs. Recognizing the opportunity, she convinced her parents to let her study Character Design at a Professional Training College, ultimately leading to her dream job at her current company, Square Enix and working with Art Directors like Toshiyuki Itahana.

Sometimes when I'm feeling unmotivated and don't want to do life, I imagine Paolo narrating my life and it helps me get things done. I even imagine the upbeat bg music and suddenly things like getting out of bed seem strangely easier. Thank you for these vids!

Get onto self improvement. Like spirituality and stuff.
Learn how to meditate & do yoga and you’ll be happier trust me.
Also workout if you don’t already. That doesn’t mean you have to weightlift theres diff types of exercising.
I heavily not to be sucked into watching too many series or doing drugs or playing video games as that only allows you to escape reality which makes you more depressed when you stop doing those things.
Id advise the TH-camr hamza but he is for men but he is also extremely useful for girls too if you watch his videos like his mental health ones. Hope you find what you’re looking for you because you won’t truly become happier without doing some work. And its work because it’ll be worth it once you’ve reached it trust me :)

As a game company project manager, it must be hard for you to get permission/approval to enter and film around. Definitely have some restriction, but for them to allowed you entering their production space, it's a huge step showing how much they trust your credibility/accountability as TH-camr.
It's great seeing their HQ - at least few section of their building. Ubisoft, SQEX, Bandai, Sega, FromSoftware, all these massive name that gamers/designers would love to work at.
Nah, im a game company portfolio manager, which means i manage your bosses. Getting permission is easy if you know the right connections.

I think the credit mostly goes to Maiko! I believe she takes care of all of the business negotiations. Not just any TH-camr can achieve such a feat as getting Square Enix or JR onboard, which is why you don’t even see Japanese TH-camrs making videos with them. Maiko must be a master negotiator. FF8 is my favorite FF game; the story is just awesome and the relationship between Squall and Rinoa was everything!

LOVED this video! I'm super surprised how welcoming SquareEnix was with their tour. I got nervous seeing you walk around while you were checking what doors were open. 😅 I've watched a few studio tours that have been more in depth and even show more about game development, but this 1 makes it to the top. I think it was that real life feeling that allowed the audience (me) to enjoy a less formal and more natural experience. Thank YOU soo much for this opportunity Paolo!

The moment she mentioned she works in the Chocobo GP team, I was like oh dang! You're actually going to the Square Enix offices. I'm a huge FF fan and just being able to see what its like inside their offices was pretty cool. They would've been so strict on what you can and can't show. They don't want things leaking prematurely before they announce it. Her artwork is amazing!

damn, this day in the life format made it seem so casual like these were just any other people with any other job, but realizing that they have such important roles in creating a game/art to be shared with the world is kind of mind blowing...
Even the greatest works are all made by people, most of whom are relatively normal. The cult of celebrity and fame worship under a veil of secrecy is divorced from reality.
When I saw the title I thought you are just covering a game designer who works from a "not well known" game company but when you said Square enix. Holy! You put another layer of respect on top of already a tower of respect you earned from me. Thank you for infiltrating their office for me. as a huge FF fan my whole life this means the world to me.

I've been enjoying the Day in the Life series for a while. This is one of the absolute best videos. Rubi and the others introduced to us are so talented. It's fascinating to get a behind-the-scenes look at such a successful company.
Now compare this to the “day in the life” vids of some of the US techies….go into work at 10:00AM, order free matcha tea latte, go to mediation room for an hour, chat with co-workers, get a snack, do an hour of work, go to free lunch w co-workers, play some foosballl, do work for an hour, walk around campus, home by4:30/ 5PM.
This woman WORKS her butt off and never even the slightest glimmer of discontent. Love it 😊

I'm a teacher and I loved showing this video to my elementary/middle school kids who love to draw (we muted the swear). I would love to see a Day in the Life of Paolo to show my prospective filmmakers the work it takes to make the video. They thought you really did just walk in and start talking to people and I explained you probably worked to get approval from the company, then found people to interview, and prepared questions in advance, not to mention the actual filmmaking and editing. We would love to see it!!

I'm a FF XIV (MMO) player and I was very happy to see one of the team members (even if it was just for a sentence or two), who helped shape the experience I had while playing the story of the game and I'm sure he will help to shape many new experiences in the future. All the employees, whom we saw, seemed genuinely happy to work for SE and I hope that that applies for all of the 3700 employees throughout all departments. Everyone helps in their own way to create the many stories, which SE tell us through their games! Wish them all all the best and thanks for the cool video, Paolo! :)

Paolo, I don't know if you can grasp how much this episode means for so many people. SE has been part of the lives of many of us gamers, and being able to not only see inside their HQ, but also a few of the faces working behind the art of those video games is so beautiful. Agree 100 percent. The visual art and sounds are things I escaped to as a child. Being able to create for a company like that AND be compensated for it..wow. That truly is a dream.

As someone who is a huge fan of Japanese voice actors it was SO COOL to see the place where they record 😍 to think that some of my favorite seiyuu like KENN and Nakamura Yuichi could’ve been there is so exciting ❤

As of this day I am playing Chocobo's dungeon and Kingdom Hearts, and while watching this video I am all smiles! It's so cool you made it into HQ! Seems like they run a tight ship. So impressive how much expertise needs to come together to make games these days. I can't even imagine a mocap session w 10 people across different disciplines collaborating without strangling each other

@@TheGrreatDane My younger brother is hearing impaired, but loves music: he feels it. Taught himself bass, then guitar, then drums, and though he was 100%, his friends with instruments not so much. He has wife and family, but still made time for what he loved: hard rock and metal. He played local gigs, had interest, but not enough local support. Again though, life issues with band members led to his hanging his guitars on the wall, and those who could not give local support now want to talk of the 'good old days' now that we're in our 50's. I have nothing but contempt for them: if you can't do something, then state it plainly, instead of ambiguous maybes.
@@persnikitty3570 I feel you. One key aspects the video states is that her parents were supportive of her career choice to become an Illustrator. I didn't have the same support growing up despite showing true potential. (Won few amateurs drawing contest). But I will enlist to a concept/illustration program just to make peace with it.

This is my favorite episode so far BY FAR. I absolutely love the Final Fantasy series and most Square Enix games. Not only is Rubi extremely talented (I just checked some of her work), her work day seemed rather normal and she was able to leave after work while there is still sunlight.
The offices are incredible and I enjoyed seeing all of the props and illustrations spread around the office. Which reminds me of the SE offices in London. Sounds like a dream job.
I have binged your entire "Day in the Life of..." series and GAH Paolo, you and everyone involved are so freaking cool for doing this! Thank you for introducing all of us (your audience) to such amazing jobs and people through your art! I'll have to let my Japanese tutor know about this in our next lesson!

Man Paolo is a legend! I don't know how you did it but you must have gone through so much to do these series. You had namco which is a big one for the programmer and now you got Square as well! I really love this series and thank you for so much for making these videos!
I really love their passion at lunch when he ask for favourite you can see how she was glowing and shining talking about Zell! I always like seeing their passion and you can see that when he asked the question she just had so much to say which was really good:)
I think on that basis I can totally see why the guy who looked after the motion capture area say it's very difficult when you got so many people coming together. They all got their own ideas and like the other worker during lunch said her vision can sometimes end up being implemented differently must be difficult and would need the person in charge to then step in and have the final say on what to do otherwise sometimes perhaps it will never end with the discussion or how things should be done.
Big respect to these artists for bringing out our favorite characters to life!

@@sakuyakizume First, what I said is indeed the case for women in general. In other words, what I said is how majority of the women feel when they come to that point. There can most certainly be odd balls, but the reality is that usually, what I said holds true. That being said, how people present themselves in public, and how they present themselves to their psychiatrist is usually way different. Look at how many celebrities end up committing suicide and such that no one saw coming, and they had everything they could want.
You say that doing what you love is what brings happiness. Truth is, it actually doesn’t. Why? Because what people identify as the thing that will make them happy if they can do it is usually always changing. What usually happens with people who continue to enjoy doing what they thought would make them happy once upon a time, is a case of mental fortitude. They will actively dismiss the things they face in their chosen path and just keep working at it. Usually, it will also be a higher hurdle to change jobs anyway. Take your teacher. She cannot just change her teacher path to becoming an engineer, a consultant, a medical doctor, or even get married very suddenly.
Now, why is it that women usually feel unhappy without children and family? It’s biology. Something you realize as you grow older is that the biggest cause for sadness is knowing you had the potential, but missing out on it because you didn’t realize the importance at the time. In this sense, every woman had the potential to bring new persons into the world, while also having someone to take care of them when they are old. Instead, she realizes that she slaved away for a company that will not care one bit about her as a person. All they see in her is whether she is a productive worker. Once she retires, she will likely end up in a nursing home and die without anyone by her bedside. THAT is something women realize when they are around the 35 mark. And no, it’s not projection.
I love how the most replayed part is people trying to see what kind of little animals she has in the cage at the start.
Also I saw that Moogle and was immediately impressed Paolo! You managed to get us a look inside a prestigious studio!

@@southcoastinventors6583 Actually, I love living in rural Japan. Beautiful scenery, cheap/free vegetables from local farmers, slower pace of life…and I can be in a major city within an hour or two on the train.
Still, I can’t help but occasionally wonder what life would be like actually living in the city.

I work for a transport company, i do office work. the work is very stressfull, under-paid and we dont have any sort of in office lunch, only a horrible dirty coffee machine that make dirt black water. All works are stressful and if you dont know that is becuase you never worked a day in your life.
I'm sure the hoops to get into Square Enix were massive, on fire, and moving at random patterns. Congrats and thank you for all the hard work to bring us such an exclusive day in the life of!

I always enjoy watching such creative people sharing part of their daily routine. I have small contribution in one-two games as a faction emblem designer. Unfortunately I am not as involved with game field as I dreamed of, but even brushing with this field of work made me really happy during the periods I was hired by companies to do what I do best. :) (I'm an emblem/logo designer and yes my youtube avatar is also my creation).
