As a single father of several sons (all with me), I can't describe just how inspiring the story of the Notch coalition is to me.

The senior notch is such a smart cat. His legacy lives on because his remaining son did the same like him and built a new strong coalition. Very intelligent lion.
Moral of the story, stick with family and don't go out alone.
Thats not a good lesson. The first part is great. But dont go out alone? Hunan beings wouldn't have accomplished so much if none of us were brave enough to leave the comfort of what we know.

'Makhulu' of the Mapogo coalition and father 'Notch' are the wisest lions I've ever heard of.
They remind me of 'Mufasa'.

@@Ehsan793 Kinky Tail and Mr. T have reached basically legendary status by this point. Makhulu was the true alpha of that coalition though. He was older and smarter than the others. I don’t believe he ever lost a fight and actually used to kick Mr. T’s ass all the time when he was a little younger. I’m sure they were just little scrap fights that didn’t mean anything, or they could have been over breeding rights but Mr. T challenged Makhulu often and never came out on top. Dreadlocks was a stud too. Huge lion. Second in command to Makhulu and most likely was being groomed to take over the coalition. He would always step in to take control when Makhulu would go out on patrols. He was a beast, literally...that was one of his nicknames, along with Scar, Snip Tail and Buffalo Killer because he was known to take down buffaloes by himself. He also took down a fully grown giraffe by himself. Rasta was large too. Very cold, calculating and aggressive. I think Pretty Boy was somewhat underrated. He fought in countless battles and was injured many times but he always survived. That’s why he got the nickname “The Phoenix” because he was always able to rise up again. Like I said at the beginning, Kinky Tail and Mr. T get all the action, but really Makhulu, Dreadlocks and Rasta were the studs of that coalition and kept it together. Dreadlocks was poached and Rasta was also either poached or killed by another coalition. It wasn’t proved either way. His body was never found though, which makes many people think he was poached. Losing those 2 was devastating to the coalition, especially since Makhulu was getting up there in age.
Find it strange that when famous lion coalitions are at their peak, all of a sudden, members of that coalition just start 'vanishing' or 'disappearing' in to thin air. People have no idea how corrupt these wildlife reserves are it's incredible. RIP KINGS.

I crown notch the wisest lion king of all time. his wisdom surpassed his life span in his appropriately named son notch two who took pages from his father's book by raising forming a coalition with his own son. because of this, notch two is 15 years old and still counting, incredible for a wild Lion. moral of the story, family is everything

Notch made the coalition with his sons. And the Makhulu of Mapogos, made it with his 5 or 4 younger brothers. Notch and Makhulu are the greatest leader in Savana ever.

This story for me is by far one of the most memorable events to have taken place within Lion history. When I first heard about Chief and Notch immediately I was intrigued. To soon find out what took place after chief was killed…was truly inspiring. The way Notch took in his sons and formed this coalition just melted my heart. What an amazing partner he was to chief, leader, and father to his sons. He is the definition of loyalty and that exact same loyalty shows in each of his sons. What an amazing characteristic to have had and passed along down the bloodline. May his legacy run wild forever.
Both Notchs are different. This one is from Kenya while that Notch is from Namibia.
This Notch is from Masai Mara, Kenya. That Chief/Notch is from Luangua Valley in Zambia. Insefu pride (from documentary Africa's Hunters and Big Cat Country).
Notch and his son notch 2 were very smart lion. Naming a lion notch makes him genius.

I’m impressed that he was able to be the lioness and lion in one, he looked after his son’s who eat large quantities of food all by himself. While defending his territory and not leaving his son’s, this is something really amazing and special.
I know this kind of thing really fascinates me too. I often wonder about nomad males and coalitions and their survival techniques compared to the much more common pride setup. Not enough studies made on it really
Somehow I like this coalition more than the mapogos since Notch is just good and smart farther Lion King

I first learned of Notch from the Big Cat Diaries. It’s so nice to see a different view of one of my favorite coalitions.
Notch and his son Notch II are very smart in taking their sons under their wings in order to keep the coalition going and perhaps rise again as the most dominant coalition later on👌

If you dont live in that kind of poverty you can't say "they can hunt easily" you don't live in their shoes. Not saying this is right. By no means this is the correct way to do it. But its the way they were brought up in. Once again not saying this is justified but its all about perception and their perspective of their own lives. People from the outside watch this and think these people are evil or this and that. Some might be but some just do it to survive. Most humans look at things from their own perspective. But rarely ever stop and think what if I was in their shoes. How would I make ends meet. Most humans naturally look at it from a bias point of view and judge which is understandable. It takes time for humans to be more open minded when you travel and see the world and see different living conditions. When you live in a first world instead of a 3rd world is soo easy to judge others in poverty stricken countries on how they make ends meet.
@@irobot7016You are right I live in Europe but i was in Africa several times and saw poor conditions lot ppl live in. If u start poaching lions or so u can get out of the conditions(since they are really expensive) hovewer i cant justify it by that. Poaching for me is much worse for me than robbing ppl on streets since there is a lot of pain involved(dying up to days in traps). Im also really sorry for male lions since they are destined to live cruel life even without poachers. Not even talking about some poachers even shooting and rangers.
Notch 2 is an absolute badass. Making it to 15+ as a male lion is incredible in the wild.

Could this be evolution working here? Normally male lions force their cubs out into the wild and kick them out of the pride. This seems very unusual and specific to the Notch coalition. Where the old dads take their cubs under their wing (increasing the cub chances of survival and conquering other prides). Plus notch son, also did the same thing. Fascinating
It's a different circumstance. Notch lost his pride to other males and of course his sub-adult sons couldn't stay with the pride under the new male rulers. It makes sense that he would take his sub adult sons and form a new very formidable pride.

ACID So long ago I don’t remember which season(s). It was before he was kicked out and formed the coalition with his sons. Try a Google search.
@@readytogo6569 It was the third and fourth series of "Big Cat Week", as it was later renamed, that Notch was in. They were aired respectively in July 2006 and December 2007. He featured as well in "Big Cat Live" in 2008 where it was revealed that he left The Marsh Pride and joined up with his sons.

The notch story is sovinspiring. I’ve wondered how male cubs learn to become a man for lack of better term. When does the modeling take place? Notch or Kale, is a window into this process. For this reason, I prefer the Notches over the Mapogos, Matimbas, etc. to name a few.

I remember watching Big Cat diaries years ago and the marsh pride and Ridge pride and even paradise plains. I remember Notch, that brought back great memories of younger days gone by. Don't know just how old this is in 2020 but I am happy to hear Notches genes and legacy live on. He was a savy Lion King. Thanks for the video.

the notches were almost unchallenged, they were just too powerful to take on, the mapogo's would not have a chance

This is NEW to me. I always thought dad lion will kick their sons out and ruled together only with brother lions. The fact that dad and sons can live forever(or for a long time) together really sound more like human beings. I love it!

@@0-7-08 more like they have no choice. Notch's success is because him too was exiled so the in-breeding won't happen.
They would, they do that so inbreeding doesn't happen. Usually lions don't make coalitions with their sons because they either die fighting when nomands take over their prides, or their cubs are too small, so when he flees, the nomands kills the cubs.
That would happen to Notch, but he managed to keep the territory for long enough for his cubs couldn't be killed because they were big enough to flee, therefore they made a coalition together.
Ohh I love that the father's took their boys w/them. They helped 2 protect them & DEFIANTLY prevented the untimely death of these male sons. I know that the father's needed their sons & son just as much, if not even more then the other way around. But as a whole it was really something awesome for their stories to have this kind of experience...
I have a thought... Well I've noticed from all of the videos I've watched through out my entire life & from everything I've learned about these animals in school, doesn't it seem to be that male lions in today's day & age seem 2 be building coalition's much more often then going it alone when finding and building their pride..??..
Is my opinion at all close to the truth? Does it seem to be that male lions rather have multiple male lions within their pride, I'm assuming 4 the protection, the strength in numbers & 4 the confidence of knowing that with more males in the pride they are less likely to be killed by other rival males? I'm assuming all of these opinions but I'm basing them on the fact that I've noticed this shift within the prides over many years.
Although my only
access to this knowledge is only through what they have produced and filmed in their various documentaries they continually release 4 public viewing, as well as what I learned while in school. I have zero first hand experience with lions in real life or in their natural setting. If I did I could or would feel much more confident with my assessment or opinions regarding what I have theorized above..
If anyone knows about this topic on a more intimate level then myself, I'd absolutely love to know the actual truth of the male lions & their typical habits regarding being solo in a pack or having other male lions within the pack with them too guarantee their survival.

Most of the times the coalitions are always brothers Closely or of the same age that got sent out by their father so I guess it's just by luck I mean some male cubs are born been the only male in his age group in the pride hence he is the only one sent away by his father which means he is a lone male, some fight even lose their brothers before maturity so it's really not by choice but by chance

Bcs they were in kenya, east Afrika. Mapogos, bb... are in south Afrika. There is no route between these countries

Kinky tail, Mr. T (satan) and their brothers (the mapogos) were my favorite coalition. Responsible for killing more lions and taking over more territories than any coalition in recent memory. Like the Notch coalition they started to disappear and die off one by one after they all started separating from each other. Kinky Tail and Mr. T went out in a blaze of gory glory though.

They are far more successful than The Mapogos. More than 15 adult sons and countless daughters.
MR T destroyed the Mopogos. He kept killing cubs and split the brothers up. I don't understand how the other brothers didn't stop him killing the pride cubs.
