So glad to see this. I've been wary of all these gardeners using plastic containers. They do leach chemicals into the soils which get into the plants snd then into us!!!
I’ve been struggling with microgreens. I’ve been using bricks to weigh them down for a few days, and then a couple days in blackout, then introduce them to light. It’s been kinda hit or miss for me, some just didn’t work out. This seems to be a great way to grow them, and when you’re talking cheap and easy, I’m thinking the clay pebbles will last a very long time, so you’re definitely saving in the long run
Not a new grower but new to your channel. I really like your videos and appreciate the simple format. It’s easy to understand your methods and you give a lot of detail on the products you use. I’m getting a little older and transitioning to growing more on shelves and indoors. Also, love growing micro greens and I like how simple your methods are…mine are too involved! lol
I've been growing for a few years now and I just learned something new that I never knew!😂 I've been saving jars and planned to use them for propagated herbs, but now....new home for my microgreens. Thank you!❤
I live in the desert and have sterilized growth media in restaurant bus tubs with the lid on for several weeks after the media is already dry. It gets about 150 degrees in the tubs
Love yr video and info. Quick to the point and perfectly informative. And i love how you use emergency blankets for light reflection...I've done that for years too.😊😊
I finally planted my first set of microgreens. I did everything right but I put all three nutrient powders in the 5 gallon water, one right after the other. Then I noticed Mike makes a separate batch of ? Calcium nitrate and then pours it in with the other 2.5 gallons. So I will do that different next time. This is therapeutic. Helps me with my empty nest syndrome (kids have left the nest). I have little babies to tend now.
Clay pebbles look like a great growing medium because they can be reused. I just wouldn't bother with glass because it seems heavy and i'm afraid of breaking the jars.
Really great thank you. I have a lot of seeds and have used sprouting jars but need to grow in larger quantities. I need to add to my rescued dogs diet as part of their organic food, I also have several hens and want to grow fodder for them. I also love the sprouts :)
I found glass containers at dollar tree with plastic lids, but the lid is solid/closed. Should I just cut an x shape into them like the lids you have here?
Is it okay to put seeds in an airtight container while they germinate? I started these clay pebble microgreens in a glass Tupperware that has a locking lid. There’s a little air in there and I open it twice a day to see if it needs to be sprayed, but I didn’t know if it was okay to lock them in while they’re still just germinating.
Thank you for the explanation of the 2/2/1, but can you explain why you put the second bag of 12 g calcium nitrate in there when according to the manufacturer's explanation there is already mastrblend 4-18-38 in it? Do you add that separately in the same amount of 12 g ? As I understand it, since you are mixing the contents of one bag in water and then separately the other bag, you should mix a TOTAL of 2x 12g of calcium nitrite. Or why do you put that second bag in there? Thank you
Great video. The clay pebbles are the best medium for quickly being able to be reused. Where is your best place to source microgreen seed varieties in bulk? Subscribed!
I had the same question. I have been using it based off of his recommendation but it looks like he has moved away from it. I don't remember him explaining the change unless I missed a step in a video somewhere.
worked for me but I do mostly leafy greens. Other people were having trouble with it and reducing the ratio. I don't get into messing with all of that and just suggest the original formula so everyone does not get confused.
@@KeepOnGrowin Thanks, good to know. Long time traditional in-ground gardener, I started hydroponics and bought the 20-20-20 specifically based on your videos.
@@KeepOnGrowin Thank you Mike! I was one of those that had some initial issues. After some tweaking, I think I got it right. My issue seemed to be proper dilution of the powder. Once I let it fully dissolve in the water and increased the water ratio slightly, to about 75% strength, I got the best results. (for me) Awesome new idea using the clay pellets!! Can't wait to dig into this one! Have a great day and thanks again for all you do! Mike - Northern NY
I also had a lot of trouble with the right mix/dilution. I now mix it at half strength and now most of my plants are doing much better. But then I am using it for mostly indoor plants and young plants under lights, not outside in bright sunlight. @@MK-cw4gw
Why add the nutrient water at the beginning of the grow? I thought just plain water was used for sprouting seeds. Nutrient not until true leaves form???
Hey Mike, question..... I grow lots of microgreens, tks to you. I never get the true leaves or 2nd set b4 the micros start falling over and need to be harvested. What's up with that??? Mahalo for any response.
Grow in small containers like shown in video. I had same problem in large 10"x20" microgreen trays. Use these smaller dishes and the plants hold each other upright.....works just like shown on video.
Thanks for this. I'm very wary of growing in plastic. Do you think that Pyrex oven dishes would work as well? It seems like a good idea instead of the glasses you have.
Sounds like a Florida flea market to me … if you search discount glass bowls you should find some deals…you’ll also find glass pipes so you may have to refine your search lol
Hey. Hey, I tried to find masterblend 4-18-38 but in the description it says Calcium Nitrate and Magnesium Sulphate (Epsom Salts) in a 2/2/1 ratio. however in another I found a description of 4.18.38%. besides from the video it looks like you are giving 12 g calcium nitrate 15.5-0-0 and 12 g masterblend 4-18-38 and 6 g epsom salt. Could you clarify that for me. Thank you very much.

10 lbs of clay pebbles on the way!
I'm going to try with a bunch of old pyrex baking pans from the thrift store.

Hi 👋 Can I ask what the "master blend" is please?
It is a fertilizer used for traditional and hydroponic gardens. Here is my video th-cam.com/video/SaN6Dlf2hCg/w-d-xo.html
What are the nutrients that he uses?
In my playlist under frequently asked questions
Do you sterilize your seeds before growing?
I do not
Which seeds are use to grow microgreens.
For the most part, you can search for seeds that are labeled as “microgreen.” However you can also sprout legume seeds like lentils or mung beans.
I think there's less oxolates in microgreens than baby greens, for those who are sensitive.
Can you use ordinary seeds or it should be microgreen seeds?
microgreen seeds are cheaper for bulk. You can use regular but it will cost a lot to do any volume.
Do you wash and dry the seeds before putting them in?
no
Hey can I use clay bowls instead of glass?
yes, they just evaporate faster
Almost forgot Love from England 🏴
Is it safe to add a !% hydrogen peroxide solution to the water in the jar containing the pebbles, to prevent mold?
You can try. Keep me updated.
