TIP FOR GREEN AMAZON SPROUTING TRAYS: Ive found it helpful to use a black sharpie marker to mark a 1" fill line (measured from above the bottom), which greatly simplifies maintaining a proper fill level when bottom watering - you want the water level with the bottom of the mesh tray. Getting the fill level right is CRITICAL for these trays, because depending on how much you underfill them, the sprouts have to work longer and harder to reach the water level, and that not only slows down their growth, but tends to stunt or even kill off many of the struggling radicals. If you see brown or black in the radicals, that's BAD.
another suggestion for finding the right fill level could be to place white net tray into bottom green tray EMPTY OF ANY GROW MEDIUM OR SEEDS; then grab a measuring jug filled with water and start emptying into the tray WHILE CAREFULLY WATCHING TO SEE WHEN THE WATER LEVEL STARTS TO VISIBLY TOUCH THE BOTTOM OF THE WHITE MESH TRAY. Then either (i) take note of the volume of water required to get to that level, or (ii) carefully remove the white tray and make a mark on the bottom tray with either a sharp exacto knife or a sharpie, to indicate where the water level needs to be.
I agree. Making a water level mark on the outside of the tray can be helpful, especially when first filling the reservoir tray. However, at subsequent checks, with white tray lifted, less water will be needed due to the increased number of radicals, and later roots, entering the water, and the overall volume increases. Subsequent water fillings will need to be somewhere “just below” the initial water fill line so that when the white tray is lowered again, the water level will be at the mark initially indicated.
@@cathyphegley7848 Another tip: you can sow seeds smaller than the mesh holes on the white tray insert by buying some reusable stainless steel mesh of the desired aperture (ex: 1mm), and cutting it to fit. Misting with water just before sowing also helps limit dropthru, if the sizes are close.
Thanks so much for your videos, especially this one. I followed your steps and grew two trays of micro greens salad and sandwich mis using mum’s seeds. Turned out great. So cool to watch grow. Just harvested 140 grams of sprouts. Really generous of you to share your knowledge and expertise.
The green trays are only trays I been using. Never learned to use 10x20 tray. I been using extra green tray as bottom tray doing black out. Thank you for all education. You are so good what you do.
Pre-soak your growing medium, it keeps your seed spreading efforts from being "messed up" by post-seeding watering. Especially if you don't have a fine flow watering system like that seen in this video.
May I ask, after pre-soaking, do you have to ensure the seeds are as dry as possible or is it okay to sow the seeds slightly wet? If they should be dry, how exactly do you dry them?
@@briannaflynn4268 In order to ensure that I am best understanding your question Brianna, are you talking about using seeds that themselves have been pre-soaked (within an also pre-soaked planting medium) ?
I just bought one of these trays from a local farmer. It included soil and seeds and directions, but I couldn’t quite understand the process. Your tutorial was extremely helpful-clear, concise, complete. I do still have a question: once I fill the white tray and cover the soil and seeds with the green tray and weight, do I just set the whole thing on a shelf or table?
I NOTICED THAT CITY-HYDRO LIGHTLY SPRAYS THE BOTTOM IF THE TOP TRAY BEFORE PLACING IT OVER SEEDS & THEN PUTTING PAVER ON. This seems to help not having as many seeds from sticking. These trays are sold as no medium grow trays. My first attempt was with peas (sprouting/microgreen) and the results were disastrous. Took way to long to germinate (yes, I soaked them) and I eventually had to throw them out. Is there a way to use these without soil that is effective?
Nice video i really appreciate, I wanted ask a question if I do this outdoors instead indoor ,How many hours do I have to keep the tray out for the light ? Thanks again for your video
Thank you so much, I’m glad you enjoyed the video! If you're growing microgreens outdoors, they generally need around 4-6 hours of indirect sunlight each day. However, it's important to monitor them, as too much intense sun can cause them to dry out quickly or become sunburned, especially in hotter climates. Good luck with your outdoor growing! 🌱

i use those trays with coco coir but i keep the green trays underneath because the roots will go down far enough so that when you bottom water the water does not contact the coco... just enough water for the roots and there is enough water to go all the way to harvest... the coco will actually dry out... you will never need to top water or worry about overwatering... kratky method... also when i seed i will water them deep and then you don't have to touch them for 3 days and the empty space in the lower trays with the weight allows the roots plenty of room to lengthen and air in that empty space keeps them from getting water logged...

Thank you. Can you use just the tray to grow or do you have to have a medium besides silicone mat? I have been looking for other videos where you use the silicone or just the tray itself. So just looking for something with the trays and not cocoir?
this a brilliant video very well explained. I'm not sure though how soil didn't fall through the tray with holes when you remove the green tray to put it on top. please do you have an explanation for this ?
Yeah! The 1020 trays are hard to get sometimes nd I thought why not use those, but was a bit hesitant. But now I feel confident in using them thanks to you! Much love from west Texas ❤
Just got those trays today online. Tried with my own tray and paper towels it was just like sprouts, not microgreens. But I want to grow them in water, not dirt. Will look up other videos to find out how.
Ya they are sprouts before they turn to microgreens. It takes like 7 to 14 days before the greens show and you have to do alot of steps besides sprinkle on a towel and water.
I'm just starting out with trying to grow microgreens and grabbed some of these trays, I do have a question though. when you bottom water do you change out that water or just keep topping it off each day ? I know with the 1020 trays all the water is usually used up each day.
Great question! If you keep the medium moist, it clumps together and rarely falls out! You can totally use another one of the green trays to catch any little debris that gets through! We wanted to show how you use can only the two trays for the entire process...
We started our microgreens hobby with these trays this past winter. I have to admit, since the pandemic we haven't grown anything. We were trying to sell them to friends and family and I became reluctant to continue because of it. But I want to get back into it and I would prefer to do this hydroponically with a mat material. If you can provide any advice/video for doing so that would be great!! I just don't want the added mess that would accompany the coco coir.
I'm just a beginner, using coco erosion mat. Haven't started my microgreens yet, but have a bunch of strawberry seedlings that started from seed. Am now trying tomatoes. I also wanted something that was a mat, and this was the most economical I could find that seemed suitable.
We are actually filming 4 videos on different hydroponic growing mediums! Hemp is one of our favorites because it is so compostable. VegBed is another great option, but not as compostable. Reusable mesh screens are another great option because you can clean and sterilize them and reuse them!
🙂Lisa Mitchell Thanks for watching. We loved testing the "paper" theory...we don't advocate using it for growing consumed crops. We are actively working our microgreens into amazing recipes and that doesn't insure quality and taste....check on the recipe book link!!!
We are so happy to hear that this helped you out!! We put a lot of time into these videos, just for this reason :) Thank you so much for the kind comment!!
… I’m wondering if the reusable growing screens would work with this setup … or … if it needs a growing medium for the purpose of retaining moisture, maybe the screen can be placed on top the growing medium to keep the micro greens clean and easier to harvest … ?
Thank you so much for making this video. I know it's a ton of work and you make it look easy enough for me to try with my new tray. I was curious, has anyone ever experimented with rockwool so that the medium can be recycled? I assume not but figured I would ask just in case.
Annoyed120 this is great ! Did you just bottom water the whole time or Did you spritz them during the first few days ? Also did you try any of the smaller sets ? Thanks so much for sharing !
@@grommitmosner1595 Spritz for the first 2-3 days until the roots reach the bottom after that, I only water the bottom 2 times a days. The water should remain low to prevent molds(The white hairs that you will see in the roots are not molds). I never tried the smaller version, it should work the same. enjoy! :)
We have tried it! It works best with bigger seeds, but we are doing some videos using smaller seeds and mesh grow mats that are reusable! Excited to share the videos!
I'd like advice for those who don't have the nifty shelves with lights. A garage with a window? It's winter here also.... If it's warm during the day, put outside? I'm actually using these to grow greens for the chickens.
You can use a window, but if it doesn’t get enough light, they develop skinny and tall. I’d suggest getting a cheap LED light source. You can get some good 2ft lights for cheap. It will pay for itself after the first or second growth usually. We showed some grown on the counter in our cute pot video we posted a few days ago. You can see the difference between those grown in a window compared to those grown with some light. We used an expensive light for that video, but you can get something much cheaper depending on how many trays you grow.

Hi can you please give me a idea as to why my roots do not come out the bottom of the white tray the seeds grow ok for a bit but no roots coming out the white tray to pick up water from the green tray i am growing in coco coir.
Very helpful because these are the trays I've been using the most. Great tips on how to manage them. What is the nozzle that you are using for spraying, please? Also, I use a very thin layer of wet organic all cotton unbleached cheesecloth under the coir to keep it from going through the mesh to the bottom tray. Just cause in my living-room-windowsill growspace it's easier to not have to clean out that green tray.

Glad that you found our video helpful!! Either would work. Grow lights would give you the best / most even results. Windowsill will work too, as long as there is enough light. If you go with the outside route, I'd suggest having a shelf / place for the greens to grow where they are not in direct sunlight. :D
Hey guys! Great content. Very, very helpful!! When bottom watering these trays do you ever empty out the green tray to refresh the standing water or is there no real concerns here? New to the whole hydroponics thing any feedback/thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hey, so I’m confused, do you add 2 1/2 cups of water so that the water can touch the roots. You just leave that water in there you don’t dump it out after a half an hour? Leave it all the way till the next watering and you just add more water to it? do you ever dump that old water out? Doesn’t it cause mold if it’s always got water in it even if it’s not touching the medium?
Yep! Exacting accuracy!
Thanks so much for this helpful advice👍
@@cathyphegley7848 Another tip: you can sow seeds smaller than the mesh holes on the white tray insert by buying some reusable stainless steel mesh of the desired aperture (ex: 1mm), and cutting it to fit. Misting with water just before sowing also helps limit dropthru, if the sizes are close.

No! You can use it for all three. Coco, Soil and Hydroponic grow mats. We use it all the time for our reusable grow mediums that we sell.
@@OnTheGrow ok, thank you.
Great vid guys. I have these trays too, nice tutorial and can't wait to dive in! Thanks!!
Thank you for the support Mark! Excited to hear how your grow goes!
Yeah! The 1020 trays are hard to get sometimes nd I thought why not use those, but was a bit hesitant. But now I feel confident in using them thanks to you! Much love from west Texas ❤
Glad we could help!! These do work really well once you figure them out! We really appreciate your support!
Nice video. I have grown them for my own use for a while. It is great to see different techniques.
Thank you Fred Frond 🥳 We really appreciate your support!!
Great hearing we gave you another view...how's the crop tasting?
Do you have a clip showing how to grow mung trays. I think I may have overlooked it.
Thank you!👍🏼🌱
I'm just starting out with trying to grow microgreens and grabbed some of these trays, I do have a question though. when you bottom water do you change out that water or just keep topping it off each day ? I know with the 1020 trays all the water is usually used up each day.
Wonderful! Which soil can i use? Pl tell me the exact name . Thanks.
Great video you guys! Can you tell me the lights you use again?
Nice video! I eat thems greens every meal! Mostly drink PBR while im growing them! subscribed!
What about media falling out of the bottom of the mesh tray? Why not use an extra green tray for the bottom?
Great question! If you keep the medium moist, it clumps together and rarely falls out! You can totally use another one of the green trays to catch any little debris that gets through! We wanted to show how you use can only the two trays for the entire process...
You are looking absolutely gorgeous ❤️❤️❤️
Thank you so much 😊
We started our microgreens hobby with these trays this past winter.
I grow on "reusable" bamboo paper towels with great success. You can buy them buy the roll at a relatively good price.
🙂Lisa Mitchell Thanks for watching. We loved testing the "paper" theory...we don't advocate using it for growing consumed crops. We are actively working our microgreens into amazing recipes and that doesn't insure quality and taste....check on the recipe book link!!!
When it goes under the light is the light on 24/7 ?
We have a timer set for 17 hours on and 7 hours off daily 😊 our fans stay on 24-hours.
Can this tray system be used with a Silicone Seed Germination Mat, without any soil/coco? Only by "ocean" solution?
Great video!!! Helped me so much getting started and was very easy to follow you :)
Hey love your video! What are the best grow lights for micro greens?
20watts? Led? Blue/red lights?
Thank you so much for making this video. I know it's a ton of work and you make it look easy enough for me to try with my new tray.
I was curious, has anyone ever experimented with rockwool so that the medium can be recycled? I assume not but figured I would ask just in case.
They work great also with no soil at all of any kind! The roots grow in the space under the tray. its quite impressive! Have you tried it?
Annoyed120 this is great ! Did you just bottom water the whole time or Did you spritz them during the first few days ? Also did you try any of the smaller sets ? Thanks so much for sharing !
@@grommitmosner1595 Spritz for the first 2-3 days until the roots reach the bottom after that, I only water the bottom 2 times a days. The water should remain low to prevent molds(The white hairs that you will see in the roots are not molds). I never tried the smaller version, it should work the same. enjoy! :)
Annoyed120 thank You !
We have tried it! It works best with bigger seeds, but we are doing some videos using smaller seeds and mesh grow mats that are reusable! Excited to share the videos!
@@OnTheGrow what are reusable mesh mats?
Another Awesome video... thank You 🌹
Great video and even better explanation! ty

Thank you so much for the support Kathleen Jones!! We are going to be making new content soon! 😄

Awesome video, Mandi! I can hardly wait to start doing this. On my way to the dentist...ouch! Have a great day! 🌱💜🌱
Thank you!! Hopefully everything goes good at the Dentist!! They always scare me haha Have a great day!
Will cfl lights work as good?
I use these with a paper towel with one end in the green tray with water in it no fuss no mess
Thanks so much! 😊
Can you re-use the coconut coir?
Great video!! Thank you for sharing
Great video, is this process the same for any microgreens or is this specific to particular type?
I have these and just used the tray with soil - didn't use the grate. They say they are BPA free but there is no stamp. How can I be sure? Thanks for your detailed video - I'll be trying it. your way next.
Although my crops were great - sunflower seed and now wheat grass.

Has the company marked the trays as to whether these are roof safe yet? If they do, I will get some and recommend them!
They have not yet, but we are trying to get some with the markings on it. There are a lot of companies manufacturing these trays and even more people selling them, so we are trying to get our hands on some direct from the suppliers that are labeled. Hopefully soon we will get some!
What does root safe means please ?

Nice microgreen
I suggest you to make some closing layer from slmuniumfoil for cover the light , so the light Will fully shine the microgreen.
🙂Thank you for watching Willy Cortez1!!! 😄 Glad you enjoyed it!
Great vid ! Good info !
Luv that I can just go to ur web site or you tube to get helpful hint while I try my first try 😜
Thx guys 🌱
Thank you for watching Brad Prentis!!! 😄 Glad you enjoyed it!
So nice a feeling to hear we help sooo much!!! P.S...check us on TikTok when you can!
I am in love😍
Thank you for this helpful video!! Do I need a grow light for this or would natural direct sunlight in a windowsill or even outside work?
Glad that you found our video helpful!! Either would work. Grow lights would give you the best / most even results. Windowsill will work too, as long as there is enough light. If you go with the outside route, I'd suggest having a shelf / place for the greens to grow where they are not in direct sunlight. :D
Great video, was wondering if these Trays would be any good and now I know. Thanks
They do a great job when you get the watering down on them!! Thanks for the support!
I missed what you used for a growing medium. Are there other options. Like an organic potting soil. Please let me know as this is my first attempt.
Thank you.
Hello, love your videos and your positive energy!)) What equipment would you recommend for growing alfalfa sprouts industrial scale? ))
Hey guys! Great content. Very, very helpful!! When bottom watering these trays do you ever empty out the green tray to refresh the standing water or is there no real concerns here? New to the whole hydroponics thing any feedback/thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
🙂Thank you so much for the support Adam Firsten!! We are going to be making new content soon! 😄 No...we try our best to only put in what they drink up basically.
Thank you for sharing. This helps me. 🇨🇦😎
Glad to hear it is helpful! Thank you for the support Paul!
what is the clear cover that comes with it used for? just curious?
Hey, so I’m confused, do you add 2 1/2 cups of water so that the water can touch the roots. You just leave that water in there you don’t dump it out after a half an hour? Leave it all the way till the next watering and you just add more water to it? do you ever dump that old water out? Doesn’t it cause mold if it’s always got water in it even if it’s not touching the medium?
