    TIP FOR GREEN AMAZON SPROUTING TRAYS: Ive found it helpful to use a black sharpie marker to mark a 1" fill line (measured from above the bottom), which greatly simplifies maintaining a proper fill level when bottom watering - you want the water level with the bottom of the mesh tray. Getting the fill level right is CRITICAL for these trays, because depending on how much you underfill them, the sprouts have to work longer and harder to reach the water level, and that not only slows down their growth, but tends to stunt or even kill off many of the struggling radicals. If you see brown or black in the radicals, that's BAD.

    • @ireneb3433
      @ireneb3433 2 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      another suggestion for finding the right fill level could be to place white net tray into bottom green tray EMPTY OF ANY GROW MEDIUM OR SEEDS; then grab a measuring jug filled with water and start emptying into the tray WHILE CAREFULLY WATCHING TO SEE WHEN THE WATER LEVEL STARTS TO VISIBLY TOUCH THE BOTTOM OF THE WHITE MESH TRAY. Then either (i) take note of the volume of water required to get to that level, or (ii) carefully remove the white tray and make a mark on the bottom tray with either a sharp exacto knife or a sharpie, to indicate where the water level needs to be.

    • @chasklos9014
      @chasklos9014 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep! Exacting accuracy!

    • @kimalexander8378
      @kimalexander8378 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I agree. Making a water level mark on the outside of the tray can be helpful, especially when first filling the reservoir tray. However, at subsequent checks, with white tray lifted, less water will be needed due to the increased number of radicals, and later roots, entering the water, and the overall volume increases. Subsequent water fillings will need to be somewhere “just below” the initial water fill line so that when the white tray is lowered again, the water level will be at the mark initially indicated.

      @cathyphegley7848 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks so much for this helpful advice👍

    • @RovingPunster
      @RovingPunster ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@cathyphegley7848 Another tip: you can sow seeds smaller than the mesh holes on the white tray insert by buying some reusable stainless steel mesh of the desired aperture (ex: 1mm), and cutting it to fit. Misting with water just before sowing also helps limit dropthru, if the sizes are close.

    These trays are sold as no medium grow trays. My first attempt was with peas (sprouting/microgreen) and the results were disastrous. Took way to long to germinate (yes, I soaked them) and I eventually had to throw them out. Is there a way to use these without soil that is effective?

      Thank you so much, I’m glad you enjoyed the video! If you're growing microgreens outdoors, they generally need around 4-6 hours of indirect sunlight each day. However, it's important to monitor them, as too much intense sun can cause them to dry out quickly or become sunburned, especially in hotter climates. Good luck with your outdoor growing! 🌱

    We started our microgreens hobby with these trays this past winter. I have to admit, since the pandemic we haven't grown anything. We were trying to sell them to friends and family and I became reluctant to continue because of it. But I want to get back into it and I would prefer to do this hydroponically with a mat material. If you can provide any advice/video for doing so that would be great!! I just don't want the added mess that would accompany the coco coir.

      I'm just a beginner, using coco erosion mat. Haven't started my microgreens yet, but have a bunch of strawberry seedlings that started from seed. Am now trying tomatoes. I also wanted something that was a mat, and this was the most economical I could find that seemed suitable.

Leave it all the way till the next watering and you just add more water to it? do you ever dump that old water out? Doesn’t it cause mold if it’s always got water in it even if it’s not touching the medium?

    Hello guys, great work on the videos, im learning a ton from your channel. Love the organisation and tidiness in your results! Do you have any thoughts about water PH? (i know you mentioned before that 5.5 - 6.5 is ideal) It would be interesting to see how different PH levels affect microgreen growth (with/without added nutrients perhaps?)

    So how much longer til harvest??? Why not show how harvested and how they are kept in fridge if not eaten immediately? Do you harvest the entire tray at once or just as much as you will use at that moment??

    Guys, I am new to this, is it better use those trays or those 10x20 trays ? what is the benefit of using the 10x20 over this ? size only?

    • @OnTheGrow
      @OnTheGrow  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, it is primarily size. 10x20 are great if you plan to grow a lot at once. We have several different size trays on our website and it basically comes down to your needs. Many love our smallest sprouting size because it's not too much produce at once. It comes down to how much you need and what you feel excited to grow in! Happy growing 🌱🌱🌱

    Can well water be used for micro greens?

  • @itsyvonneb
    @itsyvonneb 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    The big complaint I’ve read about these trays is that the green tray is translucent and lets light bleed through. (You said that you moved this tray to a special “dark shelf” but didn’t explain why.) One can also achieve true blackout by using a regular 10x20 tray to cover this tray.

    • @OnTheGrow
      @OnTheGrow  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, great point! They do let light through and a solid black 1020 would do a great job blocking out the light! Thanks for sharing 🤗🌱🌱

    Why do we need to put weight during seed germination? Newbie here thanks

    • @OnTheGrow
      @OnTheGrow  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Great question! Mainly it helps by pressing the seeds into the growing medium and keeping them moist. Throughout the germination process, it also helps by providing weight for the plants to fight against, supposedly making them grow stronger. The last main thing we like it for is removing any seed coatings since it acts as something for the plants to push off against. Hope that helps!

    Why is it important to measure out your seed? Is it possible to just eyeball?

    • @OnTheGrow
      @OnTheGrow  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can eyeball it! We just measure so that we can show a direct correlation between amount down versus amount harvested… this way you have an idea what to expect harvest wise from a set amount of seed. Eyeballing it is totally fine and we will do it occasionally…

      We try to keep our growpsaces at a minimum temperature of 70F.

    Would it be an idea to thread a cotton thread through the tray, that way you don't have to fill it with quite as much water as the cotton should wick the water up.
    Although it might cause pathogen issues 🤔.

    • @OnTheGrow
      @OnTheGrow  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great suggestion! Using a wick for capillary action is actually a great idea! We've seen a lot of other growers using techniques like that to allow their plants to slowly sip up the water throughout the grow... We have never tried it, so we might have a new experiment on our hands :)

  • @aldrintm
    @aldrintm 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Thanks for this video. Your videos help me a lot. This is the first problem I encountered with the trays. Not enough water and the medium dried up. I initially thought I was using different trays since you've never mentioned it in previous videos. You only mentioned adding half to a full cup of water. Do you find these trays easier or harder to manage compared to shallow 1020 trays where the top trap touches the bottom tray?

    • @OnTheGrow
      @OnTheGrow  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      We like how easy it is to water these trays, we just wish it touched the bottom and didn’t have to gap 😫
      A lot of these tray sets vary in their depth between the trays so we were buying up a bunch and seeing the differences... it’s all over the place for the quality and sizing 🙃
      They work well though once you figure them out!

    • @aldrintm
      @aldrintm 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@OnTheGrow Sounds like we have the same issue. 😀 I was thinking of making a mark on the outside for the water line (shine a line on the side and mark with a sharpie). I think it's easier for now to just check moisture by touching the medium.
      I'm just starting on microgreens. Most I've planted at once were 8 green trays. Still struggling with yellow peas. Can't figure out why some of pea seeds keep rotting. Good thing with microgreens is I can start again after a week. 😁
      Keep up the good work!
