- No-commentary gameplay of Bart's Nightmare. Super Nintendo. Usa Version. Game completed without dying in any level. Played with Snes9x 1.52. No tools, cheats, autofire, re-recording or save states were used.
One of the first Simpsons games for the 16 bit. This game was quite a dissapointment for everyone, as it can be extremely frustating for children (the main target of this game at the time).
Anyway, I don't think this game is so bad. To start with graphics are nice, and it has several styles of gameplays ranging from platformer, to shooter and beat'em up. The problems is that almost all mini games feel quite dull and boring, being the only interesting ones the Bartman stage and maybe the Itchy and Scratchy one.
In the game you have to find 8 pages of Bart's homework divided into 6 stages (two of them belong to the Itchy and Scratchy mini game).
When I was young I had no clue of what I was supposed to do (and probably most children too).I remember that I used to enjoy the Bartman stage, but I hated the Indiana Jones one as I didn't understand it (I think that it's too complex for a 7 year old boy).
In this gameplay I obtained the best mark possible. In order to do so, you need to find the 8 pages and get a score over 125.000 points. And yes, you need to leech points because it's impossible to obtain them other way (unless you need to repeat several stages again).

Not really. You just have to kill some time in one of the two Itchy and Scratchy levels until your score hits 125K. It's an easy A+ after that...

One time. I died on this game, with only 4 pages. But instead of a grade C- to C+. I got a B+.
My guess was I had well over 90k points when I died. So that was cool.
(Another possibility is, the teacher Edna Krabappel, must of seen how well written, and comprehensive the unfinished project was. She gave Bart a B+ for extreme effort.)
Itchy and Scratchy level, stand to the side and shoot the lightbulbs for an hour straight. That was my trick.
Your grade is based only on your final score. You only get one letter grade up for completing the game. The number of papers you get does not matter. I've earned a B+ with no papers!

Where getting 1-2 papers would at least make the grades up to C- to C+. I never knew that. Guess I was maybe wrong after all.
I tested it out. I just went to the Itchy and Scratchy level and collected infinite amount of points from the lamp shooting out its fire. I got to 100,000 points without completing the level and then lost all of my Zs on the street on purpose. I ended with a B+. So the highest you can get is a B+ regardless of papers and one letter grade up to an A+ for completing the game. In reverse, the lowest you could get is a D- by finishing the game with 5000 points. In order to accomplish this, you have to allow granny to keep kissing you which docs points.

Wow. I can't believe you made it through BOTH "Bart's Nightmare" *and* "Virtual Bart". Just completing those games would have been an achievement, considering how terrible they are, but you went above and beyond, got the "best" ending possible, and did it all without any deaths in-game. I tip my hat to you.
Don Skiver Many thanks Don, I appreciate your comment :) Well, I really like the Simpsons and I couldn't get too far when I played both games as a child, so this was some kind of revenge, haha. I find Bart's Nightmare easier than Virtual Bart, being the latter a pain in the ass if you aim for a no death-run. It took many gameplays in order to beat it that way. I hope both gameplays help people to complete them too.
Technically you didn't die in Virtual Bart. theres one death that you cannot avoid, and thats in the stage randomizer.

Thanks! That level is not that hard once you understand how it works. When I was a child I always got killed there because I didn't know what to do, haha. Once I learned its mechanics, it became a lot easier.
Man that's insane lol that's alot of moves to learn! I think the farthest I got on it was the second part of that level.
Actually, you don't need to memorize anything at all. The stage layout is always the same and you can really learn the movements required to progress, but that's too much work. You just need to pay attention to the height of the pillars. If it's too low, don't step on it. There is another clue: if there is a flame coming from the pillar, don't step on it. It means it is at its lowest level. If you see that you can't continue, you have to step on previous pillars to make the others rise. That's why at some parts I come back and jump several times. I hope I explained myself. It can be difficult to make things clears through writing, haha.
Amazing that we just had to learn through repetition with these games back in the day. I never knew what to do to progress or even which direction to walk. Thanks for posting this.
I think my fondest memories of this game were the Itchy & Scratchy segments -- there was nothing more satisfying than killing Itchy multiple times.
This ending alone not only represents a SUPERB job well done by the player, but also this possible feedback onto Bart by his family:

Not sure if everyone’s aware but if you hold down Y and move the D pad you can control the bubble from the gum. You can keep it in the frame a lot longer this way.
This was my favorite game as a child and spent so many hours every Sunday trying to beat it. Never did though. Thank for showing me finally it was possible!

I can't believe you beat the game. I never understood what to do in the Indiana mini game and still today is confusing. I also remember the Godzila one used to be frustrating as I got hit everytime and the game ends so quickly. Best one was Bartman and Itchy & Scratchy. You destroyed Smithers so easy xD

The Indiana mini game is very confusing although the goal is quite simple: you must get to the end. The point is that you have to pay attention to the pillars, because if they are too low they will sink the moment you step on them. To sort this out you have to jump on other pillars and make them rise. That's why I sometimes retrace my steps. You also have to watch out for the little devils because they force you to jump on other pillars until you step on one that is too low. In the end you learn the path to follow after many games, as it is always the same. I hope this helps you to better understand this complex level.
the yellow door was my favorite part of this game! id only want to play that level. but this is another game I had trouble beating growing up

Era algo habitual de la época que los finales no fueran gran cosa, sino más bien como una pequeña recompensa al jugador que llegaba al final, al menos en lo que respecta a juegos de estilo más directo. Los juegos que contaban con historias más complejas, como rpgs o aventuras gráficas sí que tenían finales más elaborados.

Fun fact: In the Itchy and Scratchy levels, the soda cans that roll out of the fridge are actually weapons. You can pick them up and use them against the duo, but they’re limited.

Such a tough and unintuitive game. I think every kid rented this at some point and never quite puzzled it out. I was only ever able to beat the Bartman, underwater Bart, and the Itchy and Scratchy levels. Never could beat Bartzilla or Indiana Jones.
I think that's basically the story of all of us. I believe I beat Bartzilla level once or twice, but not really knowing what I was doing. I'm sure that no kid could beat the Indiana Jones level.

I remember about 5 or 6 years ago I played this on my mom's, boyfriend's, friend's SNES. I honestly think it's one of the most funnest games I've played my whole life.

Tokyo/Rin I never really understood how to beat the Indiana Jones. I beat all of the others at some point (never at the same time of course) but could never figure that one out.

Did you know you can CONTROL the Bubblegum?
Keep the bubble in the screen, and hold Y... and use the D-pad... you can ACTUALLY make it move

I had such a fun time pretending to be Bart Simpson playing this game. I was 7 when this game came out so it just hit different.
I rented this game so much as a kid. I’m not sure why I put myself through so much torment.
This was my favorite Super Nintendo game...

It's weird to think this game came out before the Springfield Monorail. There was so much lore that did not appear in this game.
I nearly beat the SNES version with 6 out of 8 homework pages recovered. My family gave me this hard ass game as a Christmas gift a long time ago when I was a little kid. My friend and I already talked about how hard this hard ass game does which is almost impossible to beat 'til I looked at someone else's gameplays on how to beat it. One of the episodes of the show did show a part from the beginning when Bart celebrates his first A grade at a fancy restaurant

The main stage/hub is quite confusing if you don't read the instruction booklet and even so, you need many gameplays to fully understand that mess.

That was actually from a Simpsons episode entitled Homer’s Odyssey, where Bart sings this part of the song as his school was having a field trip to the Power Plant.
I wish this and Virtual Bart would come to Steam, XBL, PSN, and E-Shop. Oh yes I know licence issues. Because somewhere someone is holding out for that extra cent.

Thanks! But I've been able to beat this level as an adult. When I was a kid I didn't know what to do and I just could beat a few levels. Once you understand everything, it gets a lot easier.
This game was beautiful as far as graphics back in the day, too bad it lacks in the fun department. I remember playing this when it was new at a friends house, we became bored and annoyed at the difficulty pretty quick. I still really don't like this game to this day, just something about it turns me off. Congrats on beating the game with A+...Oh, and the ending boss sucks and so does the actually ending credits.
I thought it was a great rental game. Not sure I'd ever want to own it, but for a rental where you only had it for 2 or 3 days at a time, it was definitely entertaining. I rented it multiple times because I liked it so much.
sirscrotum totally agree with you on the rental. I went back multiple times for it when I was younger. I remember for one of my birthdays I had my parents drive me around to all the GameStop’s in the area looking for it. No one had it and one worker looked up its value in their database and it said $0.01!!!

How do you make the paper come faster when you’re on the street. I felt like when I was a kid I would walk around FOREVER before the paper would come.
If you shoot a television with a seed you will make a paper appear. This happens with the first pages but after number 4 o 5, it won't happen anymore. I guess I got lucky because I remember in different gameplays wandering for more than 10 minutes with no success. You can also jump the mailboxes in order to make a question mark appear (they point in the direction of the paper).
Bartman and Bartzilla were my favorite stages. Once I understood how to do the "Bartiana Jones" segments, they were a walk in the park.
F__k the Itchy and Scratchy stages though. They sucked the hardest.

Took me months of grinding to get this as a kid. Doubt I could do it today because who has the time? It's one of those endings that sticks with you. I saw a Lets Play and was able immediately think of the perfect ending after not playing it in about 30 years.
The trick for me besides renting it maybe a dozen times was immediately spawn a skateboard which you could ride down the center line and max out your Z's to survive. Then master the Temple of Maggie, go slow watch fire whip that devil and trigger the pacifier trap. Rest then just depended on learning all the random ways to trigger the paper to spawn. Stupidly hard to master but once done is relatively easy to repeat A+s. But I doubt 20 years later I could even come close
I guess that this game's difficulty lies mainly in figuring out what to do. It's extremely cryptic and the game's main hub is a complete nonsense. The stages themselves are not particulary difficult, except for The Temple of Maggie. All these Simpsons games were too hard for their main target: kids.
@@MrMaskaman cryptic is exactly how to describe it. Other than bartman, itchy and scratchy, and the germ level, nothing else is straightforward. Even bartzilla, press back to shoot lasers at the train, down for tank lasers, forward for fireballs for helicopters in front, b for side fireballs helicopters flying to get ahead of you, a for lasers for jets, then all the other buttons to destroy buildings for fun and you have like 5 seconds to figure out what does what before you get killed. Uggh lol. These games tested your love of the Simpsons lol. Still cheers on your video. Good stuff.

At the end I like the expressions on the faces of Bart's family! Homer and Marge are pleased. Lisa can't believe it! Little Maggie does not know what is going on. But she knows something must be up because the test paper on the fridge has a drawing on it she has never seen on any of Bart's papers! LOL!!!!!
There was a similar scenario in the episode Kamp Krusty. Bart forged his Fs into As in a similar manner seen here. Unfortunately for Bart, the result of that turned out much worse, as Nelson, Jimbo, and the gang took over the "kamp", which sadly lead to a kid's hat being eaten by a bear. And yes... it was a good hat too...

Last I played this game was in 98 when I was 5 had no idea what it was called just know it was a simpsons game where you have a choice to walk through 2 doors and I found it. The human memory is amazing
This game was a disappointment. Graphically I always thought it was pretty nice but the gameplay was very frustrating. Damn shame that Konami didn't get the SNES rights and port over the arcade game.

I would say Bart's nightmare gets a 7 out of 10 in my opinion.
It is a fun game in my eyes. But I will agree Being fixed with only one difficulty made it troublesome for the kids who just wanted to play and have fun. Plus some mini-games are boring.
The most fun I had is the Red door stage. (I played dig-dug. so I am familiar with the mechanic.)
I also had fun with the blue and green door.
I hated the yellow door as a kid. (Yellow is my favorite color. but man the second part was a bitch to do on first timer try and a few tries.) It was also the most boring on to me. (Minus that telephone. That phone was so funny on how it rings and then goes *BOOM!*)
The free mode was mixed. the head were the worst as they where annoying. As when I was in low health, I cross the streets to avoid them. (In which I get splattered by a bus.)
Overall, This is a decent game. could of been better and had a difficulty settings for the newbies and less experienced players. But this game is still good.
+Dominque Doty I agree with you. The game is original and you have different mechanics and gameplays in each stage. The problem is that some stages feel rather dull and quite simple. For example, Bartman's stage is quite long and complex, but the virus stage is very short. They should have added more difficult settings and stages to choose from.
***** Agreed, A few more stages (which will mean more papers. So 10 to 12 would suffice.) and some challenging settings for those who want a mega challenge would of helped. (but of course There should be easy and Normal difficulty for those who are new to the game.)
Some people call this game trash. I Call this game original! But again could be better.
Now a days some people make the good flash games from old styled games of nes, genesis and snes. This always make me want to try making a game inspired from Bart's Nightmare. (But have a few more fun stuffs and have a difficulty setting. So it can be easy or unforgivably hard.)

+Shadow_Link A little bit difficult to explain with words, but I will try my best. Every time you step on a column, it goes down one level and makes a different one go up one level. Besides, they collapse when you step on them at their lowest level. The problem is that some of them are already on their lowest level, so you cannot step on them, otherwise you will die. You have to raise them by stepping on a different one, that's why I jump between some of them until I raise further columns. That way I can continue without falling. I don't know if it makes sense what I have just said, but I think you can understand it if you see the gameplay at the same time.
When I saw the "YES,THAT WAS A MEGADRIVE/GENESIS." I laughed so hard.
I think that it was a nice touch. What a shame that there is no Snes on the Megadrive version, haha.

Finally cleared it using save states but it hardly seemed worth the trouble after the ending Seems you can get a good grade even by getting a good score too as well. I noticed on a few play throughs it rose a few letter grades and I had like one page and a really high score.
I could never get past that damn Godzilla stage.
The falling movement on the tower climb is just wierd.
I remember that Indiana Jones level. F***ing, stupid hard. Didn’t understand I had to go back sometimes, the eggs got picked up too quickly by the bird, and those demons chased me to bad pillars and my death. I think I beat all the other levels.
I used to find it amusing to get the suit from Skinner, then join the bad crowd to get it off, then Lisa fairy turned them into mice.
