Swat Kats is supremely BADASS! It's one of the few shows that I enjoy as much at age 28 as I did at age 5. I love everything about it, particularly the art.

I whole heartedly concur... accept at the perspective of a 37 year old, and a 14 year old. While at 14, I was far TOO COOL for cartoons at that point, I respected Swat Kats for neither pandering, nor patronizing, to its audience... so therefor I could rationalize still watching it. Stone protectors was lame as F#$& though... "Their stones of power glow..." I believe it was ostensibly an attempt to make Treasure Trolls (not just trolls mind you, as Russ trolls for instance rise above any of our preconceived heteronormative concepts or societal gender constructs, appealing to all children regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, nor sexual orientation [not religion though, as I imagine most fundamentalist religious sect will find them, like everything else, evil and blasphemous,] since they had shit like a knight, an astronaut, and a Dr. Frankenstein's Monster, so clearly they were too cool for school, but I digress...) male children who were more accustomed to playing with weaponized, overly muscled, action figure lines with bad attitude (see battitude) to the EXTREME! Long story short... Swat Kats were awesome... Stone Protectors? Not so much.

Pirates Of Dark Water was a pretty decent show, the world they build of high seas sword and sorcery was really cool.

Biker Mice from Mars was a fairly popular cartoon at the time. It had an extensive toyline and everything.
Swat Kats is such a criminally underrated show. I wish the game was better.

Yeah it was popular back when it was one of the only shows on Nickelodeon, but easily one of the most forgotten Nicktoons. I mean, I know I try to forget it -- it's one of the ugliest and least-charming cartoons ever created.

Same with Eek The Cat, it ran for quite a while and was a large part of the FOX Kids era. I don't remember the game being that bad for a "guide the person" platformer, but it was unusually dark visually and really needed the brightness raised or something.

SWAT Kats did get another season funded through crowdfunding so we may see more of it. But otherwise it was way ahead of its time and would have fit well with Adult Swim stuff or Toonami. The main issue with the show for the time was the violence and the mature tone (What happened to the civilians in the subway train?). Also could see it go well as an Ace Combat style game rather than what the SNES game was.

    • @CyrusBluebird
      @CyrusBluebird 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

It's interesting that SWAT Cats of all things got a second life though crowd funding, me personally always wished Thundarr The Barbarian got revived, or even a good video game adaptation, which could have worked even in the 16bit era with how differently each of the 3 main characters could have played and solved problems. Kinda like Lost Vikings but a bit more action then puzzle solving.

And I would say that in no way was Swat Kats trying to cash in on TMNT like he claimed... its a completely different action Genre of cartoon.

Family Dog originated from a Steven Spielberg TV show that was sort of similar to The Twilight Zone. Spielberg's show was called Amazing Stories. It consisted of a bunch of short stories, most of which were odd in nature. The Family Dog was one of those episodes(I believe it aired right around Christmas). It picked up enough popularity that it spawned a series that was extremely short lived & this game. The original episode of Family Dog was very strange. The dog itself was basically ignored at best & abused at worst, very Christmassy.

I had no idea Stone Protectors had a cartoon. I played it once with a friend back in the day and we both hated it.

Typical Biker Mice storyline: bad guy plans something, Biker Mice stops it. Destroys bad guy HQ.

I remember watching Family Dog back in the day (I think 3 episodes were shown before it was pulled) and was excited to rent the game from Blockbuster. I don't remember much about the game (or the show for that matter) other than that the controls were awkward and the hit detection may have also been off, I did manage to beat it a few times before it had to be returned.

The Family Dog originated from a show Steven Spielberg had called "Amazing Stories". It was a show that was comprised of a bunch of short odd stories, in the same vein as The Twilight Zone. Family Dog was one of those episodes & spawned a series that died fast.

What's funny is I recognize almost every single one of these shows, even the mentions at 0:45... although, to be fair, never heard of Avenger Penguins.

I only recently found your channel and have been loving going through all the videos here. That being said, Swat Kats wasn't actually unheard of and was insanely popular by gross sales for toys and the series was pretty successful overall. Ted Turner is the reason it was canceled due to his belief that "violent" cartoons were going to cause kids to start hurting each other, ect.
The show is actually getting a reboot though! :D

I thought to post a list I had built up here in case you ever decide to make a part 2 one day. People might argue that some of these aren't too obscure, but in any case, it's perhaps best to use your own judgment as to what's obscure and what isn't:
    Dennis the Menace
    Hurricanes
    Inspector Gadget
    James Bond Jr
    MTV's Beavis and Butt-Head
    Super Widget
    The Adventures of Mighty Max
The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle and Friends
    The Tick
There's also Double Dragon V: The Shadow Falls, which is based on the 1993 Double Dragon cartoon that seems to be obscure, though I imagine that wouldn't matter since the Double Dragon series itself is rather well-known today. I also imagine you purposely didn't include the Hannah-Barbera cartoons (Jetsons, Yogi Bear, etc.) and anime.

Of all of those games, I still have my Biker Mice From Mars cart working fine, is a shame that back in the day I didn't get SWAT Kats when I got the chance, the rest I didn't knew about them, because of license issues, those games are hard to find and they're usually expensive, but is a good idea to give them a try if you have a chance to play them.

megagrey I'd say the SWAT Kats game isn't worth it. It feels very Western, even kinda Euro-ish and just kinda meh. :/ A pity because the show was really awesome. And the music was great.
Pirates is a great game though. One of the better under the radar beat em ups for the SNES.
