    I think a comparison between the sigma 56mm 1.4 vs the 85 mm 1.4 gm would be awesome too. I'm sure a lot of people would want to see that. Great video!

    very interesting video Chris thanks for doing this! I've got the 3 sigma aps-c lenses and the 16 and 56 in particular are exceptional lenses! I'm so impressed that I'd actually lean towards using the 56 and my a6600 as my portrait combo for weddings over one of my a7iii's with a full frame portrait lens (currently have the tamron 70-180 as my full frame portrait lens). I do mainly wedding videography but hoping to pick up more for photography and if I do, I'd be probably more tempted to upgrade one a7iii to the R3 so I can get 18mp and still use the sigma 56, but also get dual card slots - that's how much I love the 56!! Ha! Good to see you back with more videos!

    Mate, youtube recommendation works like a miracle with this recommendation on my feed. I was trying to search for this exact comparison for weeks and when this came, my questions have been answered. I'm also considering a full-frame path with the rumored Sony A7C coming mid-September. But if it will not come then the A6600 now on sale at $1156 to 1088 USD with one extra genuine NPZ100 battery, SD Card, Tripod, and other accessories are hard to beat here in the gulf, and its only until September 5 so I have to decide quickly as I could. TBH, I think I'm leaning towards the APS-C unless the rumored new Sony A7C comes at presumably $1000-1500 USD, then I'm considering it paired with Sony 24mm f1.4 GM. Since I can stretch my budget to around $2500 - 2700 USD. A lot of aps-c users are considering a full-frame path if the camera size is compact and the same with the a6600. I actually like the flip-up screen of the a6600 because it's easier to look up rather than to the side when you are filming yourself and people wouldn't notice when you are looking on the screen since your eye almost aligns when looking up. I was also traveling to Georgia and Armenia back then and my fully articulating screen from my Canon 750D was almost karate chopped during one of our tours, so when I got home I immediately sold it due to disappointment and I bought a Canon m6 mark one and I was really happy with the flip-up screen. Mate this video helps a lot. Hopefully, you can have the pictures to be available to download so we can pixel peep like a creep. Haha. One request though, maybe also you can do a more outdoor lowlight video and photo test in your next video with these 2 cameras and lenses. I couldn't thank you enough for uploading this mate. And I just subscribed! Cheers!

    Woah man, where'd that beard come from?
    Interesting comparison - I was considering the a6600 as a back-up alongside the a7iii, but this is the first time I've heard of the colour difference with white balance etc. Did decide against it based on high ISO performance, got an a7Riv arriving this week instead 💁‍♂️ My plan is to leave the 24mm GM on the Riv so I can switch between normal and Super35, then the 55mm on the a7iii. Shot a whole wedding with just those two primes last weekend and loved the results 👌

    great Video!
    But one important question:
    You said something like: You need to stop down the aperture of the 24 mm to 2.8f - 3.2f to get the same background blur that you get when the 16 mm is on 1.4f. I am not sure if that makes sense. But maybe I am wrong. Isnt the 16 mm an apsc lens (1.5 x crop on the sony) and the 24 mm a full frame lens (no crop). So isnt a 16 mm 1.4f x 1.5 crop = a 24 mm 2.1f on a full frame and not a 24 mm 2.8f - 3.2f?
    I would really appreciate an answer! :)

      I've found the opposite. Having a camera that could last from 6am to 11pm in the a7iii allowed me to take many more photos than i ordinarily would. It was bulkier, but it was always there. In addition, the lowlight performance with even an f/2 prime and shadow recovery of the a7iii was insane.
      I wouldn't go back to an a6600, due to the lowlight advantage, evf and ergonomics of FF.

    • @X99Zero
      @X99Zero 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@antant06 For my use it became such a pain that I want to get rid of the A7iii but at the same time I will lose a lot $$. As I do some travel videos for social media (not professionally for clients) the A7iii mean't bigger gimbal and lenses and it became such a pain to lug it all around. Also, the A6600 has a larger battery so battery life is not an issue, if it drops down to around 1,000 - 1,100USD on some promotion I'll switch back to aps-c. It will be interesting to see the A7C this month, but it will be at around 2,000USD supposedly.

      @antant06 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have both the Sony A7RIII and Sony A7RIV, the RIIII I do not use any more, I was thinking of getting a Sony A6600 as a compact second camera, but the sensor is a bit old and I cannot go back to an EVF with less resolution now when I am used to the EVF in the RIV. I often use the APSC mode in the RIV (26 megapixel) so it is almost as if I have two cameras in one camera and my 24 becomes a 35 and so on... But maybe if a very good future Sony A7000 with a new sensor and a much better EVF could be a possible choice for me.

  • @pf4773

    I bought but returned the Sigma 16mm for one reason: It was NOT a small, lightweight lens compared to my 30mm. It was not worth it to me for portability sake to use this very good lens given how large and heavy it was. I highly recommend the 30mm and try other wide angle lenses that are much smaller.

  • @JapanLovers

  • @GraphicMill
    @GraphicMill 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    The difference in DOF is not the Full frame vs Crop sensor, it’s the fact that the 6600 is using a 16mm lens and the a7RIII is using a 24mm. Those two focal lengths have a different DOF. A wide angle 16mm has less DOF than a 24mm.
    If you put a 16mm on both cameras and shot the same photo from the same spot, and then cropped in on the a7RIII image to match the a6600 cropped image, the DOF would be the exact same.
    Bottom line is, a crop camera gets the exact same bokeh as a full frame when you are shooting with the same lens on both (Apples to Apples). The 6600 is cropped into the photo more, but it’s the same image.

    • @ChrisTurnerPhotographer
      @ChrisTurnerPhotographer  3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Which is why I said I didn’t want to get into it lol your correct obviously but can you imagine trying to say that every time on video? The fact is to get the same field of view from the same distance you get a shallower dof on full frame whether it’s actual or not

      the a6600 has a perfect fit for my hand! It's actually better than the a7iii (for me) as my pinky sits naturally on the grip whereas on the a7iii because of having the front dial, that extra space pushes my pinky off the bottom and it doesn't feel nearly as comfortable. Have thought about the little grip Chris uses but not got one yet!

      Guillermo Alessandri ha ha nah man for the other a6xxx series cameras I agree they are tiny grips! I’ve just found it really interesting that the lack of front dial on the a6600 makes a small physical but big comfort difference in comparison to the a7 series cameras! I don’t know why, but I feel like the grip on a camera is such a big factor in how enjoyable the camera is to use, and therefore affects how often you want to go and use it!

    I own the A7III and a few lenses (24 1.4GM and 85 1.8 and I am planning to buy the 55 1.8) and I am actually considering buying the a 6600 to take advantage of the crop sensor (Of course I could use the crop mode on my A7 but that would reduce my resolution quite dramatically). THe biggest advantage imho would be to have a 35 equivalent opening at 1.4 using the GM (I am mostly shooting commercial fashion portraits and I definitely miss a 35). I am having a hard time finding opinions about my idea of having both full frame and crop sensor with the same lenses. maybe you and/or some of your followers could give me an opinion about that?

    • @monsieurpapou
      @monsieurpapou 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Another consideration would be the usability of the remote app. I am in a wheelchair and can barely move my arms. I could definitely take advantage of the app but the thing is touch-focusing is impossible with the A7 while it seems to work quite well with the a 6600. That could also be taken into account

    • @ChrisTurnerPhotographer
      @ChrisTurnerPhotographer  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @ChrisPoli

      I use full frame glass on my 6600. I have the 20 1.8G and think it’s fantastic. However, the 55 1.8 is great, but the Sigma 56 1.4 (crop) easily beats it on the 6600. The new 20 1.8G, 24 and 35 GM all have the aperture ring which makes things so much easier on the 6600. You can then use the two other dials on the camera for shutter and iso. Just tossing that out there - from a convenience standpoint.

    • @monsieurpapou
      @monsieurpapou 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ChrisPoli Thanks a lot for sharing your thoughts Chris! In the end, I ended up buying both 55 and 35 1.8 and, for now, I still "only" have the a7III. Maybe I will stick to that until I finally buy a new body (when a a7IV finally appears? ) I am quite happy with the lenses even if I would appreciate a 1.4 aperture, especially when using my 35 indoor in low light situations as I like to do when gathering with friends for instance (I admit with don't do that much these days ;)). The brand-new 35 1.4 definitely looks pretty appealing... I will not talk about the 50MB sensor of the A1 and all that means in terms of coping endless possibilities... That is a completely different topic ;)

    I vastly prefer the 6600 over full frame sony cameras because of the compact size of the 6600 and the compact lenses. When traveling it is so important to me to have small-size and light-weight equipment. Major downside to the a6600 is its poor image stabilization and horrible menu system along with a lack of touch screen functionality. I also miss so much the loss of PANORAMA mode on this camera.

      Yea its very negligible at least with these examples. I think in some examples, some shooting scenarios it would be easier to see. For example all of those shots were daytime, he should have showed the comparison at night too where the A7riii technically would have an advantage, however when I shoot at night I use a tripod to keep exposures longer and iso lower so in some ways it can save some hassle by not needing to do that and of course if there is a motion element in the dark then the A7Riii will certainly have the upper hand but frankly people rarely shoot in that scenario outside of concert photography and I bet both would do fine with that.

      I have never seen a camera so complicated in my entire life and I have been shooting for up to 9 yrs.
      I returned my A7RIII yesterday, the camera is too complicated for me. Back to easy peasy canon.
      I shant be purchasing a camera based on hype anymore. I'd go into the store and try em out from now on..

      @@Bkintariah because it's complicated? That's why you want to switch to Canon lol I mean you can shoot CLOG on Canon and the same principles apply, you have to over expose by 2 stops roughly, colour grade in post. It's not complicated it's a skill to learn. If you don't want to do that then sure, stick with what you know

    After being pounded by the hype of Sony cameras I took the plunge on a a7r iii I took it for a walk with my daughter took some snaps then to my left saw a beautiful landscape so bumped my f stop to f11 and would it focus NOPE just kept pumping in and out and this was in broad daylight 😳 so when home tried various settings all same when f stop was narrow it did not like to focus GOODBYE SONY was great for portraits at f1.4 I must admit.

    The overheating of the 6600 is so great that it is impossible to work with it with confidence. We are sorry because we are in love with Sony.

      The 6600 doesn’t have that issue. They resolved it.

      @@professorstein5855 Hello,
      If you tell me now that it was already “solved” it means that yes there was a problem that, I don’t know why, you want to hide.
      I wrote to Sony about this and they did not respond. If, as you say, the problem was "solved" Sony has not made me any camera change or repaired anything.
      Consequently I still think this camera is designed to work in Alaska and Siberia. Not where it makes a temperature of 30ºC.
      Best regards from Catalonia.

    Once calibrated the color is the same on all cams. Especially on Sony.

      How do you calibrate a camera, first I’ve heard of it. Would love to know

    • @GregorMima
      @GregorMima 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah exactly and that's so sad. But tbh you're not alone, I haven't met even one youtube photographer who is doing it, and at the same time he or she is either whining about different colors or raging about the great _insertbrandhere_. Anyway check out x-rite Color Checker Passport Photo, I have an 10 year old version but there is a newer one. And yes for calibration you should use xrite... Tho I admit my version is only working on Lightroom, not sure about the new one.

    • @ChrisTurnerPhotographer
      @ChrisTurnerPhotographer  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have one of those for my screen it has nothing to do with the camera. You can’t calibrate the actual camera colours.

    • @ChrisTurnerPhotographer
      @ChrisTurnerPhotographer  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Like you can’t change anything in camera to change colours, unless you know something I don’t

    • @GregorMima
      @GregorMima 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ChrisTurnerPhotographer Yes i do. 1. Raw Photo of the color checker. 2. Import into Lightroom. 3. Make new Color Checker profile in LIghtroom (Export as Color Checker/You need the SOFTWARE not just the Color Checker). 4.Restart Lightroom. 5.Set new Color Profile for your photo session in Lightroom. Photos taken with ANY cam are 100% profiled and calibrated. And no you don´t need to change ANYTHING incam. Actually with this method even magenta-green shift etc all is overwritten.

    you're comparing aps-c and fullframe using the same fstop of 1.4. That's a common mistake. You must apply crop factor to the fstop and iso as well.
    Thefstop is defined by N = focal lenght / Diameter. You can't change just one parameter and expect having the same N. Simple math.
    Tony northrup has a good video explaining this, IQ Filmaker also has a good video about this and other misconceptions.
    In other words, you can save TONS of money by just knowing the definition of the specs of the gear you use, and not taking things from granted just because lots of youtubers and photographers say otherwise. Most of photographers are not nerds and won't go deep to understand the phisics of things.
    I can give you the example of Jason Lanier, he is a great photographer but ignorant on this same misconception. He actually has a video dedicated to tell people to buy full frame lenses to use alongside crop bodies. He is giving bad advices because he doesn't know math.
    The guy that follows his advice will spend 2 or 3 times the money, to get WORST results that he would just by buying specific lens for aps-c. That's phisics, that's math, that's a fact.
    Hope this comment can help a few guys out there, to take a minute to check everything I put here in order to make a decision, instead of just throw money away based on bad advices.
