      If the dog is hungry enough, it will eat. I wouldn’t worry about a dog not eating for a day or two. It happens commonly with stress. They usually eat by the third day. I babysit a friend’s dog every time she goes on vacation. The dog refuses to eat for a day or two, but by day 3, she eats again no problem!

    My dog tries to be a picky eater, and I don’t go for that. I have eliminated the possibility of teeth or gum concerns. No parasites. No health issues. She’s just being stubborn because she has been given human food. They’re not going to let themselves starve. When the only option is dog food, they WILL eat when they get hungry enough. But if you give in, that dog is training you, not the other way around.

      Actually not that simple. My dog goes waaaay too long without eating, finally gives in BUT eats only small amount which is not enough nourishment for a dog her weight. People say she won’t starve. Sure she eats it after a day and half, but only a small bit. . She’s been vet checked

  • @parley1994
    @parley1994 4 ปีที่แล้ว +25

    I think the first thing you should do if a dog won't eat. Is have them examined by a veterinarian to make sure there isn't a health issue causing their lack of appetite. If there is no health issue causing it. Then you can look at the behavior side of things. We had a puppy who wasn't eating. We suspected he had parasites. We gave him de wormer and soon after his appetite came right back.

    • @MaxsonAtTheFort
      @MaxsonAtTheFort 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yeah and get slapped with a 300 dollar bill when in most cases a dog is being stubborn because they’ve grown accustomed to eating human food that someone in the house constantly feeds them.

    • @parley1994
      @parley1994 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MaxsonAtTheFort I highly doubt it would cost that much. In fact, if it's a common problem like " my dog won't eat " it's probably going to be a simple thing like you get some anti parasite medicine to give them. Which more often than not solves the problem. And that would cost less than 100$. There are however those rare cases where something really serious is going on and while you waste time trying to do the behavior side of things, your dog is suffering from a medical condition. So I am sticking with what I said. Rule out a medical cause first. Then work on the behavior stuff. You don't want to risk the chance that something is really wrong with your pet.

    • @MaxsonAtTheFort
      @MaxsonAtTheFort 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@parley1994 I got billed with 140 dollars for a stubbed paw nail back in 2015, gave my dog painkillers. If my dog is dying or having nonstop diarrhea then of course I’ll take them to the vet but I panicked thinking he broke his leg when it was only a stubbed paw, veterinarians like to jip people way too much.

    • @parley1994
      @parley1994 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MaxsonAtTheFort vets don't " like to jip people" the vast majority of veterinarians don't make very much money. The medicine and equipment they use costs them a lot of money. And they have to make enough to stay in business and pay their bills and put food on the table. Even if your dogs paw wasn't broken, the pain was still bad enough that you noticed. Which is saying something because animals often hide pain. Because showing weakness in the animal world means you get killed. So it was still a good idea to have a vet look at him. And sure, the bill might be annoying. But vets do often charge a lot less than a human doctor would charge for the exact same thing.

    • @MaxsonAtTheFort
      @MaxsonAtTheFort 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@parley1994 I respect the veterinary profession when they don’t go overboard, a vet saved my poodle back in 2003 when it was almost certainly going to die from parvovirus and the bill ran my family over 500 but for a vet to charge 140 dollars for a 10 minute check up and low dose painkillers is just absurd.

      Sprinkle kelp powder on their food. Get it on eBay. It has to be Ascophyllum nodosum (a special type of kelp). It’s very cheap (under $10 worth should last you a good few months). The organisms in the kelp powder consume the tartar on your dogs teeth. My husky is 12, had yellow teeth, I’ve used it for a few months (and have not been very consistent at all) and I looked at his teeth the other day and they’re no longer yellow!!
      I kept using it whenever I remembered to, because I’d heard such great things, and over time it’s absolutely made a stunning difference. Just keep going with it for a good few months to see results.
      There’s no way he would have ever let me brush his teeth (he barely lets me get a brush through his fur!) and he won’t even step foot inside a vets nowadays, so that ruled out being put under for a teeth clean (plus who wants to do that to them anyway - so stressful and unnecessarily traumatic).
      Get the kelp powder off eBay - no name brand necessary, just be sure it is the type of kelp I’ve listed above in powder form.
      1/2 tsp for a small/med sized dog once every day or two. 1tsp for anything larger than say a 20kg dog. Start with a 1/4 tsp if your dog is sensitive to new foods. My husky is super super fussy and he isn’t bothered by the very slight fishy/seaweed smell.
      If he had been, I’d have mushed it up with a tsp of peanut butter or similar and given it to him that way.
      It’s really quite miraculous! - Cheap, easy to administer, all natural and zero stress for your dog! Give it a go.
      (Pet stores do sell it in a fancy branded tubs for around $50 AUD for the same amount I got for $10 AUD on eBay).

    Happy New Year, Cesar! Great advice! I hope the owners get back to you and let you know the dog is getting wet food with that kibble. I bet there is no nutrition in the kibble, and that's another reason he won't eat. It will be just manufacturing by-products, fiber, gluten, meal, extract, preservatives and colors, and flavor to fool the owner that there's meat in there somewhere.

    Our vet suspected our dog (11 yr old Husky), had Cushing's , (she also has Pancreatitis). Had us leave her for the day for 3 rounds of blood draws. She has always been a nervous dog( rescued at two years), and had never been away from us that long.. Long story short, it seemed she had a stroke or something while there, was confused and barely acknowledged me when I picked her up. Got home, and fell and couldn't get up. After that, could barely get up. Then stopped eating. We managed with arthritis meds and coaxing to get her back on her feet. However it's been over two weeks and "being calm", coaxing, giving various foods that fit into her Pancreatitis and Cushing's disease, she still refuses to eat. Have given her apatite enhancing meds etc. Still not eating. barely drinking. Its going on 3 weeks! Decided to fore go more testing as the prognosis was the same. (Long story). Anyway took her to her favorite place at a nearby lake. Could tell she loved it, and she walked a long time. Got home still wouldn't eat.
    We're not sure what us keeping her going. 😔

    My puppy 12 weeks, wants to eat what the other 3 dogs that are adult (5-12 yrs old) are eating! The puppy ate the food he has now for 6 weeks and never a problem until my German Shepard gave the puppy a piece of his food and now the puppy only wants their food!

    Hey Cesar! What do you think of the new general mills petco exclusive dog food called "true meals"? I only have a few concerns over the quality control of the meat chunks because petcos other house brand treats tend to come moldy even on the shelves. So what do you think is it worth the $$$? I'm currently feeding a ACANA premium chunks in broth wet dog food mixed with either taste of the wild or the true meals multi protein product. My great pyrenees just loves it.

    Cesar, my dog is too spoiled to eat. I can't feed her as well as I wish. I cook for her homemade foods, either raw or not raw, by mixing meats (she prefers chicken and beef, a lot of times minced and I also feed her on organs, skin and cartilage) with vegetables (carrots, pumpkin, sweet potato, greens). But she is hard to get to eat. This made me for a while give up on feeding her the balanced vit and min homecook foods and just feed her on her favorite chicken breast sous-vide and kibble as snack or when she feels hungry. But I feel guilty for not feeding her the whole spectrum of nutrition. However she really challenges me on losing my temper with her tandrums. Which she never wins because I control myself to never lose my temper, I learned that from you. Have you ever encountered a dog too spoiled to eat its food? I will try every suggestion you give, believe me. Now I always rotate her meats and type of foods so that she doesn't get bored with it because she does get bored if I give her 3 times in a row something she will eat well, hoping that is the winning formula! So, I stopped worrying about her not eating and if she wants to eat once a day is fine, if she skips a day is fine, but as a "mom" to my dog this worries me extremely. I wish she was just like every other dog, eating like a crocodile when fed. She is a 3kg toy poodle, too spoiled to scold her. I lost the battle long time ago. So, I give her foods like for example boiled chicken breast and she will not touch it or eat just a little. (sometimes she eats well though) What I observed, if I leave it and the next day I don't throw it away, the breast will naturally dehydrate. I will cook for her a new meal, but will not throw away the first dehydrated one. Well, on the 3rd day, she will eat the dehydrated food I gave her 3 days ago! Instead of the fresh one! Can you please explain me why? Can anyone help me? In 3 years I have tried almost every trick on her. Including not caring and leaving her without food if she doesn't want to eat and putting it back in the fridge. Leave no food except at certain feeding times of the day, like first thing in the morning or noon, or something like this. I also noticed she will bring little bags of kibble to me to feed her at night, when I wake up I have it next to me or in my hand. So she is hungry, but she is hungry at night. I also noticed that if she doesn't eat during the time, she will be hungry at night, but if I feed her at night, her stool might get loose and she will need to go to the toilet at night, which is a problem, because it's not normal to walk my dog in the middle of the night just because she might go wee. But if I don't do that, she might surprise me on the carpet! (or sheet for dog pee which is great, but for that she needs to go to where I put it ). I don't want to feel frustrated with my dog, I just love her too much, and she is incredibly sweet! Everybody loves her. If I go on a visit with her, she will eat well at the visiting family like I never feed her, which pisses me off, yet I am super glad she eats! Please advise!

    Ok this is hilarious😂, I did what you said, I put a lid on the bowl of food, my puppy freaked out and ran away, then growled and stared at it. So what now? So funny.

    I came here specifically because I have had my puppy for 4 weeks. I have gone through five foods, including the one she woofed down for the first time ever when I fed her, but now even this food that is no longer attractive. I talked to the vet about it because I was desperate and starting to try to put sweet potato in it or a pinch of tunafish , or a little rice. And she like all tainers said, well thats fine, if thats what toure willing to do for the rest of her life. So, now she’s holding out for my food because my food smells better, and MY dinner time is no longer pleasurable. My puppy barks only two times when she wants attention for me to throw ball or play with a toy with her or she wants my food. The second is barking for my food. The entire time I prepare my food she’s barking at me. I have started to be proactive and making sure that I’m planning my eating meal times around her crate time because I can’t take the incessant high pitched barking. But she still wont eat HER food.

    My dog only eats if I mix a little cooked salmon in her food... If I don’t have any for a day she will stubbornly try to wait me out for it. I’m going to try adding salmon oil instead for the times when I don’t have salmon on hand. 🤞

    I think the dog doesn't like that food, notice the high pitch whine and pawing. She's attempting to tell you there's ingredients she doesn't like (corn?) Maybe grain free kibble would be more desirable. And secondly dogs don't like eating the same thing forever, so change it up!

      my vet says food is interchangeable for the most part if the base protein is the same. I mix dehydrated/raw, canned, and kibble in so he never gets tired of it. Dogs love smelly food. kibble doesn't cut it for a lot of dogs.

      @@nepadron My dog has turned her nose up at the raw. First started when she was in her first heat. She went back to eating like a beast. Now its back peddled. Turns her nose up at her food again. I know theres no underlying health issue because she will eat everything else (treats. And no i do not go overboard with treats.).
      I feel the only way is to let her fast, but i hate it cuz she's only 10 months.

    Feliz Año 2020, Hola Cesár. Saludos desde México. Cómo puedo ayudar a un perro que es muy Tragón. Fué rescatado encontrado en carretera ya tirado en los huesitos. Está mejor gracias a Dios, pero se la pasa comiendo como si no hubiera un mañana. Come su plato y la de sus compañeros. Ya hizo la travesura de comer la bolsa de croquetas. pusimos un candado al bote de croquetas. Lo llevamos a caminar en la mañana y en la tarde. Tiene 3 años me comenta el veterinario.

    What I wouldn't give for a visit from you! To an unprofessional eye, you might think I have a decent handle on my pack but I know I make a lot of errors. I have 4 long coat Chihuahua's. My oldest is 8 1/2 years, 2 littermates who are just over 3 years and the youngest is almost 2 years. I know I "baby" them, not terribly but any amount is probably too much. The youngest is NAUGHTY. She's very smart, very curious, destructive, TONS of energy. I sure could use some help in harnessing the pack as a whole. I lost a beloved member of the pack in Nov, she was Alpha second to me... meaning, if there was an issue to be addressed, she would look to me first and if I didn't address it, she would. I don't know if that's "right". My pack gets me through the really bad days, I don't know where I'd be without them. They have manners with me and my kids but not so much with others. Come visit Upstate NY! :)
