I am the weak link. He’s got me so trained and I get so stressed that I just up the ante and give him something else that’s better. He won’t eat his prescription food and so I kept changing it. Then he was getting all sorts of tummy problems. Ran him through a load of tests and all came back unremarkable. So the vet told me that I need to put the food down, wait 10 mins, then take it away. No treats, no nothing until the next feeding. This is sooooo hard to do but I promise I will stay consistent this time. I can do this!
First person to say that they are holding out for snacks. Finally someone who agrees!!!

My cocker will skip days. So I tried making meals of people food and she would refuse that until I locked her in the kennel until she was done. Yet she will not eat if I didn’t make it good enough. So I am frustrated now because it is always a battle
I’ve had medium size dogs all my life. Never had a pickiness problem with any of those dogs. Then I got a small breed puppy. What a mistake. What finally got through to me was Dr Sammy laughing at me. Trained. Just like my ex husband had me trained.
The truth hurts. However, I take comfort in the fact that over 25,000 people were looking for help with this heart wrenching problem.
So I’m not the only one. I took this puppy into my home for comfort while caring for my elderly father who was descending into dementia. I did not know about all the issues with little dogs. Silly me. We are on day 3 of discarding the food after an hour, and no other food available.

Thanks for this insightful Video. We have a Shih Tzu named Mr Teddy Bundy that we rescued 2 years ago, He's just over 3 years old now. A week ago he was having trouble defecating & not eating. Earliest Vet appointment was the following morning. Overnight he chewed open his right Anal Sac. The Vet examined and treated Teddy (sent us home with a Pain Rx that he had an adverse reaction to) and recommended that we get a Cone of Shame for him. Teddy still not eating or defacating the following morning and bad reaction lessened overnight (I chose to discontinue the Pain Rx), we returned to the Vet and dropped him off. we got a call that he was healing fine and that they wanted our permission to try giving him some wet food (which he devoured). We took a couple of cans home with us which he also has devoured one can (half at a time with several hours between servings / second half can mixed in with his Dry Food which he picked out and did't eat). He finally is defecating normally but still refusing to eat his Royal Canin Shih Tzu Dry Food that has been his sole Diet fro more than 2 years. This morning just before Noon, I tried mixing his Dry Food with a Raw Egg, he devoured the Egg and licked the Kibbles Clean. I plan on holding out as you've suggested at least until the following day... Does Dr. Sammy or anyone else have any suggestions to overcome Teddy's will power to hold out? Update: this afternoon (following day) Mr Bundy gave in and began eating his dry food. Randy AKA randog311
Ditch the crap highly processed kibble and prepare your dog quality home cook fresh meat,veg,eggs,fish,sweet potoato ect!kibble is not good for your dog it's convenience food that's why so many dogs have so many health issues same as humans that eat junk food become ill...

That's how my dog is. So I know he will eat. That's how I know it's being picky, not a health problem necessarily.

I never understand people saying their dogs are picky. If they get hungry enough they will eat anything.

The food goes bad or they will purposely make a huge mess you've just haven't come across a super stubborn pup yet
My dog will go 3 three days not eating, we don't give treats if she won't eat, so she will have nothing at all except water for three days, she only gets fed once a day anyway,
I work all day and my parents are at home and I can leave notes and tell them but I have a feeling they still give my dog a treat and say “don’t tell your mom” I just can’t trust anyone and there is no way for me change it except notes and telling em off. I wish people would take my seriously and actually listen to me it’s like I’m talking to a damn wall. If I lived alone with my dog this would not have happened 😤
What I am worried about is my dog become thinner because of being a picky eater. If I will let her not eat for several days she will become more thin. Could I ask your opinion about that?

I have two mini golden doodle’s. The person we got them from told us that the one puppy was the runt. We have so much trouble getting her to eat she is 6 months old. She is skin and bones. She will eat treats and pretty much very little food.
Get some goats milk. It's great for them and their gut health. At least you know she's going to be getting nutrition while you figure out the solution.

going thru this with Ebike (my pit) now.
lately he's been picky and it's my fault ...giving him some of my food.
learning to leave his dog food out for 15 minutes,
and if he doesn’t touch it... back in the fridge til next meal time.
it's hard to watch, but I know it's for the best ... for both us.
we BOTH gotta be re-trained.

My dog vomits when it doesn't eat, she always has since I got her. She is currently not eating, or holding out for something better but vomits as a result. Is it still okay to hold out? Or should I try to find dog food that tastes better?
Same with my dog. He mostly just eat chicken and rice with carrots

My little corgi chihuahua will literally go 3-4 days without eating anything and at that point I don’t want to just let her starve. She just will not eat. Bloodwork is done, nothings wrong with her. She’s 2 yrs old. I will leave kibble out with freeze dried chicken even… and nothing 😭 my bf must be giving her treats/snacks still!!
My mini dachshund is picky as hell! I literally have 7 dry foods down right now and she won't touch a thing. Her wet food, she will go truth stages. One kind one week, another kind the next week, etc etc.... 99% of treats she despises. Honestly sometimes she's a nightmare at food time. Kind of at my wits end.... she typically will eat at least once per day, if in lucky, and that takes a lot of manipulations on my part. She seems super normal. Poops normal, pees normal.... Just would love it if she would stick to one type of food. Tried farmers, won't eat it btw.... As i said, she acts super normal. Not losing weight.... She's just a brat at meal time.... Really need some insight from someone....

my teacup yorkie is the EXACT same to a T!!!! If he finally starts eating one brand a few days later he decides he’s sick of it and doesn’t eat it. He will literally refuse a prime rib if offered to him. At least it’s comforting knowing it’s not just him😭 i think it’s a small dog thing maybe

I recently rescued a terrier from a shelter. He was abandoned in the middle of nowhere. He's skin and bones. I buy Merrick and other good brands, I thought he'd love it. It's so hard to get him to eat though. He won't hardly touch treats. He won't eat table scraps. I don't know how to get him to eat regularly. Please help.
My problem with my Maltese is that if she skips a meal she starts to vomit bile so I can’t allow her to skip a meal. I feed her in the morning and evening. I’m the only feeder and have to pull a rabbit from a hat in creating something she likes. I mix something like pumpkin with her dry kibbles to attract her, then she licks of every kibble🫣 as an example, or she just gets totally board with the taste and I have to invent something else. I guess my problem is that I can’t ignore when she skips a meal due to the vomiting and are forced to give something else or feed her from my hand!
I think this is a maltese problem- mine only wants to eat food thats cooked- i have to look up dog recipes like a mad woman.
Run diagnostics and make sure you're not missing an underlying problem. Every patient is different and some require small frequent meals throughout the day.... anxiety, stress, reflux issues
Same here. My dachshund is extremely stubborn. He’s a senior, he needs frequent meals in order not to vomit bile (his blood work is fine, but we’ve battled pancreatitis for 2 years, finally his values came out perfect), but he just won’t eat his food and he vomits and then out of my fear of him puking I pamper him and it’s a very vicious circle!

Ok but what if you have a very large breed puppy who will go like 4 days without eating? Then maybe eat like half 1/4 a serving and go back to not eating for another 4 days. Even without giving scraps. Even after withholding treats and chews. Even after adding bone broth or cheese or move on to cooking fresh food and then still that's not up to snuff. And then what if she's 20lbs behind in her growth?

Ok, it’s day 3, the battle of wills is strong. I need to stay off of the internet because it is making me weaken but I know if I give in I will never win and I’ll be stuck again. Just to be clear, if he is acting normal just keep training?
Im guilty of this, but now my 6 month old schnauzer doesn’t want to eat dog food or human food. He only wants treats and drinks lots of water. When no treats are given, he doesn’t eat and throws up liquid. Idk what else to do, I’ve tried different types of food 😭. In need of help

Give him goat's milk. It's very good for them overall and especially good for their gut health. I'm in the same situation because I gave treats as a reward for him going potty. Then made things even worse by giving him cooked chicken and steak. Now he refuses his kibble and yesterday he threw up white foam. Time for tough love.

My brother's dog comes to me and plays with my dog..has the time of her life..i feed her homecooked meal... when she goes back she stops eating..but feed her because she is so thin..
Question for doc - you say all you have to do is “look” for cancer and that everything seems normal because nothing showed up in bloodwork - what is the method used to look for cancer?

I'd be a picky eater too if I was forced to eat dry whole wheat bran cereal day in and day out. I'd rather starve than eat that.
I’m the guilty one my Siberian husky is very picky but she doesn’t eat just any table food either she eats chicken she doesn’t like any fruit or vegetables no rice or anything she’ll eat certain cheeses it’s just weird when I’d notice she wasn’t eating but wouldn’t try to eat much of the table food either I thought it was weird so even to make her healthy dog food is hard and I’ve bought her every kind of dog food out there she doesn’t like it sometimes she’ll eat the freeze dried merick dog food but that’s about it
OMG my 5yr old maie siberian husky is THE SAME way. He loves cheese but only american slices and only sometimes. He won't eat any flavor of kibble just beef and now he won't eat it at all....he will nibble a bit a day but that's it. He is VERY VERY picky as he is getting older and now I'm worried and don't know what to feed him!

Its really not funny when your trying to feed your best friend also your right, my pup only likes certain human food cause i guess weve trained each other. He will not eat any dog food!!. Is it that bad he wont eat it.
I just got a teddy bear from a shop and he didn’t eat for two days, and is only 9 weeks old. I’m having to mix baby food into the kibble just to get him to get a few grains down. Very frustrating.

My puppy wouldn't eat kibble and actually I don't blame them! Even top quality stuff is dried, highly processed food. I switched him to raw and he loves it!

Some people baby there pets way too much thats the problem they give in. And even if the pup or pet is behaving bad will give them kisses and tell them good boy and say oh he doesnt know any better blah blah blah pet food is expensive also. Hard headed stubborn people are the WEAK links.
