Thank you so much for posting this simplified recipe, and for explaining just what Urad Dal is. I enjoy the whole (darkly skinned) lentils I grew up eating, but now, when I see "white lentils" again, I know to get them. This looks delicious, and I can hardly wait to try it with my homemade roti!
This recipe is uncomplicated and looks delicious. My teenage daughter has just turned vegan so I will definitely make this for and show her how to cook it for herself in the future. Thanks!
Thanks for the simple and easy to follow steps and your presentation which is easy to understand and follow. Indian cooking has so many steps but your recipe has broken it down to the quick and simple.
Thanks Paul! I really appreciate your kind words and feedback! It has been a long time since I've taken a look at this video! I'm glad that you found it useful.
Of all the kitchen gadgets I have, I do not have a pressure cooker. Can the Urad dal be cooked in a crock pot, rice cooker or just a regular pot? Thanks!
Absolutely yes it can! The Crock-Pot works just fine and I sometimes cook it in mine over a. Of 4 hours on low heat. It actually produces a very delicious and creamy texture. in a regular pot you'll have to bring it up to the boil and then allow it to cook on a simmer probably for about 40 minutes. Hope that helps!
Thanks for the recipe and instructions! My pressure cooker does not measure time by the number of whistles. Instead, it reaches the right pressure and has a color indicator on top. Can you tell me how long it takes for your pressure cooker to get to three whistles? Thank you.
Hi Thank you very much for this Recipe, I got to know that this lentil (Urad Dal) has some great benefits. Please keep up the good work. BTW, your language and voice is beautiful & absolutely clear to understand! Awesome.
I personally find it to have a nutty flavour, and what I like best about it is its cream texture when pressure cooked. It takes longer to cook though and it's best to soak it first, unlike red lentils which will cook quickly.
Thank you so much! You certainly can cook them with the husk, however I would advise soaking the night before and adding a little extra water. I hope that works!
Hello Aneela! This is just what I needed--a friend is getting me urad dal and your recipe is the best I've seen. One question: I don't have a pressure cooker. Is there anyway of getting around this? Thanks again!
This looks very nice, the one I made before and I usually see is a dry version. This is more like the moong daal tadka I make. 😃 where's your family from? I'm Hungarian but my husband is from Pakistan so I cook mainly Asian food 😁
Hello! My family is from Trinidad, but I'm married to an Indian. I didn't even cook much before I got married, but I've been on a steady journey for the last 12 years. What is your favourite dish to make for your hubs?
@@maharajaneela that's great! 😃 pilau is a big family favourite but my husband loves biryani, and I love making chapli kebabs, they're so colourful! What about you?
***** Hi Aneela, me and my wife tried this today and it turned out real good. We didn't add turmeric powder (haldi) as that's how my mother used to make it. We generally have this with Bajra rotla and some aloo-pyaaz sabzi. Thanks for the recipe.
Great voice. Still do not know the time of cooking. Wish to add 2-3 table spoons URAD DALL to buck wit and lentils. So, please, tell me the time of cooking. Thanks!
Thanks so much! I usually use a pressure cooker, so I go by the whistles. You can make this in a regular stock pot by bringing it to a boil, then reducing the heat and letting it all simmer for 30-40 minutes. Adding some urad dal might increase the time - but if you soak the dal before it will help speed things up a little. Hope that helps!
Just use a normal pan and cover it in case if you don't have pressure cooker, but you need to make sure you heat it for long but in a lesser temperature, you need to make sure that your daal has softened.
Uses white dal (without the skins) and a pressure cooker. Upbeat and the narrator has a good voice. However, every ingredient is presented with a slow zoom (in or out). Why? Are people really that bored with life? The low-key Indian Zamphir trio backing track was nicely done. I won't be trying this one today: I have black urad dal on hand an no pressure cooker.
Just to say, for maximum flavour, you really do need oil in these recipes..in order to extract out the flavour compounds from.the spices...they componds are oil soluble not water soluble...so, omitting oil will result in a tasteless, insipid curry...not what you want😟
Oh okay. I heard it when I used to play the Ultimate Jewels game. Anyway, your recipe looks simple and tasty, planning to try this week along with my roommates. :)
Nothing is wasted in my kitchen, I guarantee! I didn't show the clip of me adding the remaining tomato and onion but I promise it went into the cooker :)
Thanks for the recipe and that sexy voice lol! I'm trying to figure out what the skinless urad dal is called in english so I can look up some nutrition information about it. Would you happen to know how much protein in 1 cup cooked?
I made this today, it was so simple and easy to make. The taste was beautiful, my family couldn't stop appreciating.
Glad you liked it!

Hello, can I use urad gota for this? Also, thank you for your pressure cooker alternatives in another comment.
BTW I made this and it came out delicious. It is great served with quinoa! Aneela what would be good instead of the garam masala?

Well now then, this looks like a delicious dish to try this morning. Breakfast here I come!

IF YOU COULD WRITE THE INGREDIENTS IN THE DESCRIPTION SECTION OF TH-cam IT WOULD HELP!!!!
what does the urad dal taste like? i find i don't like chana dal much, but love red lentils and brown lentils

Thanks for the recipe. It's a quick and healthy recipe, perfect for what I was looking for. :)
Superbly presented. .Aneela. .I hope I can cook black gram splits with the husk. ?

Hi! Made this today for the first time and having it for dinner! Yummy!
Hey Aneela, Whats if I use Toor Dal instead of Urad Dal and same recipe?
You certainly can! Lots of dals cook up in much the same way!
Very nice ,good cooking, stay blessed

Thank you Grace! And thanks for including a time stamp! I tend to ramble a bit! Hehe!

The way u speak
one day I wish to speak 💝🔥
That's just sweet comment! But I'm sure you speak your own language very beautifully! You should hear my Hindi - it's horrible!

Oh I agree! I always cook with a bit of fat, be it oil or ghee. But you know... sometimes people don't want the oil. Give me the fat, I say!
I agree.
don't use plastic... All the best
Thanks for the video Aneela.. Urid Daal for Bachelors hahaha.. but still nice video

That ultimate jewels background music. :P
I think the music is just from iMovie... When I watch this now I feel like it's a bit distracting...

Madam, the aluminium material is not healthy for cooking food. I tell you just for information. Thank you for your video.

Such a fantastic video! :) Keep up the good work ;) Hugs from Sweden

Welcome!
Its called black gram not white gram
Yes, I suppose you are right! Urad IS the black gram.
Thanks for the recipe and that sexy voice lol! I'm trying to figure out what the skinless urad dal is called in english so I can look up some nutrition information about it. Would you happen to know how much protein in 1 cup cooked?
Serving Size: 100 g (3.5 oz) has 24 g of protein. That's for split skinless urad dal. 100g is half a cup.
i would give you an A+ except your language Urad Dal in English is Urad Dal! English for Coriander is Cilantro! Three Whistles in English is?
I'm not sure that I understand your comment...
