- In Stars and Time is leisurely paced and doesn't mind slowing things down for you to absorb it's handful of characters and places, though the premise makes it sound like it's rushing things.
The game opens not at the start of a grand quest but in the closing chapter of it.
Firing up a fresh playthrough is like starting your older brothers save file on a SNES RPG while he's gone and seeing a bunch of really well worn characters decked with items and skills you aren't familiar with.
There's Siffrin, the main protagonist, Isabeau, a kind hearted fighter, Mirabelle the parties leader, Odile, a wise and measured magician, and Bonnie, a kid who misses every move they try to land.
Consider it another RPG Maker classic, but with some big annotations.

If possible I recommend leaving subtitles off because it gets in the way of a lot of the dialogue in the footage, I did add them though just in case you needed them 😊

I get the point you made about the pacing/monotony of the game, I feel like each experience is going to differ depending on the individual player and how they interact with the game + how much their able to put up with the monotony. For me it made me feel like I got more in the mindset of Siffrin, and it made a lot of the game hit home emotionally. I do see how it can be too much for some players though. Overall really enjoyed the game and is probably going to be one of my favorites for a while. Also think you did a good breakdown of the game as well!
I feel like the point you made about how the game is a bit overkill on the monotony to tell its story is basically the a lot of the same things people say about Undertale's genocide route. Like yeah the grind being boring is kind of the point, but no doubt it can easily be too much for some people. Still love this game though, definitely the best game I've played in 2024 so far.

yeah, but genocide is not the intended experience, but for this game that is the intended experience so in these situations it would make sense to reduce the monotony since they aren't going out of their way to chose a monotonous path
I laughed like crazy when I died to eating a pineapple snack, like I forgot loop told me not to eat it but I forgor and I just couldn’t stop laughing after realizing I died to a pineapple.

8:55 I think that pacing monotony *is* pretty difficult for video games specifically, since you can't really know how quickly a player will get through a game, or what parts of the game a player will find more unbearing to get through. There's often small tiny things you could do every run that might make it more interesting and less monotonous, but if people don't notice that, or don't equip Memory of Sadnesses, then it'll end up feeling slower.
Compare also to how the good place season two starts, where they just show the end of each loop instead of each loop in itself.. That might've been something that could work here, but being an indie game that's primarily made by one person, I imagine being able to reuse as much of the maps is needed to reduce scope creep. And then you run into the issue of having to hide stuff in a map you have to go through over and over; if the story beats don't have enough space between them, then I imagine it might end up overly crammed.
So in a way I'd say while a game is uniquely able to make the player feel what it's like to be in a time-loop, they're also uniquely disadvantaged in the issues they face. And though the game might have some pacing issues I do think it is a solid and unique entry to the time-loop genre, and I hope it inspires other people to make timeloop games in the future that learn from both what was done well and what wasn't.
Back when I first found this video I remember it being titled “The RPG that makes you hate it” or something of that accord.

11:05 I think how people feel about the characters can hugely depend on person to person. Like, you might feel annoyed by the characters, but other people might love them. I don't think it's possible to write characters that feels like a friend group, while also have it be a friend group everyone can relate to.
As for Isa, I think that part is pretty genious. It's set up like that really annoying trope, and intentionally makes you feel like sif is filling the "dumb romance protag" shoes, then later subverts it pretty hard. Because it's drawn out and not the main focus of the game, it was more bearable than if a romance-centric media did it (at least for me). This allowing it to go on long enough for the subvertion to really hit.
Bonnie is a kid, kids do be not very great people sometimes. How much you're annoyed by that probably varies lot from person to person.

Not sure if you knew this but you can just run away from battles, with a 100% success rate. You probably can’t run from bosses/required enemies though.
6:28 Since everything is getting frozen from outside in, leaving bonnie behind in a town they don't know anybody, forcing them to agonizingly wait to be frozen not knowing if they'll ever unfreeze is... not the best alternative
I don't think it's better to go into a dangerous castle full of monsters and the very thing causing time to be frozen in the first place. Besides Mira probably knows everyone in that town and would've vouched for their character. It just seemed off.

Just got back from playing this game after this recommendation. Man, it's good. It's everything I like about Groundhog's Day with an even more interesting twist! Won't leave spoilers here but Siffrin being forced to live with some of his mistakes was real poetic justice.
...still tedious. I hate Act 3.
Tried this game because it caught my interest and have only gotten to the first loop. I plan on continuing but it’s been a while just need to set aside time to do it

Although genuinely this game is great. Obviously as an exclusively character driven story, where the setting, narrative, and magic system is all written in order to reflect the main characters, it can be rough if you don’t enjoy the game’s sense of humor and general friend banter. Hate to compare yet another quirky rpg that has very few things in common with undertale to undertale, but it’s sort of like undertale in that way.
Although, luckily, if the 100% subjective taste of humor is one of the main complaints of the game you (and others) are having, it’s obviously doing something right.
I would never play this game normally. I didn’t think I’d like the artstyle or music, it looks all very samey (and obviously I didn’t know that was intentional), and the gameplay sure did look like a turn based rpg, but I’m glad word about this game spread and I gave it a chance

Funny thing is, All his complaints were rendered entirely invalid since he literally just assumed things rather than allowing the story to actually tell him shit.

I did enjoy Steven Universe, but over time, I've grown tired of its narrative. There was a moment when they were discussing why it could be rude not to call the King, well, King because he wishes to be addressed as such. So, it would be extremely rude not to call him that. Besides not being an actual king, the dude was killing and freezing people right and left, including one of the main characters' sisters, oh sorry no, he wasnt killing anyone, he was just trapping them in ice for all eternity, thats better than killing someone for sure. But apparently, it's more important to respect societal labels. I think I'm getting too old for this kind of message

maybe someone should have pointed out right there and then that labels for the king are not what matter right there, because he does not deserve any respect for what he has done
