The Animation that Broke the Newgrounds Portal

- There she is is more than just an animation. It’s pure unbridled optimism, it’s the fluttery feeling you get when you think about your crush, it’s the sunlight that slowly pours into your bedroom on a Friday morning.
How do I illustrate just how joyous and uplifting this nearly 20 year old internet cartoon is? What does it do to earn the bold title of greatest of all time on Newgrounds absolutely massive catalogue of iconic animations, next to the likes of internet culture titans like salad fingers, tankmen, and the madness series? You likely know those characters already but have seldom heard of the subject of todays video.
To put it simply.. that’s not what I’m measuring here… yes it doesn’t have the same social impact that those
Cartoons did… but the quality of its art… the rhythm and warmth that radiates from each frame of its gorgeous animation… and it's contrast to what people expected of Newgrounds at the time... it all culminates in something that even the most passive appreciator of the website simply must experience…

It's been a little bit since my last upload and because this isn't what I normally cover I'll have to rely on your comments, likes, and views to be able to comfortably do well with this video. A like, comment, and sub are appreciated :)))
Commenting just so you know, 12 days ago this story got a continuation, There she is: Another Step.
AAAAAHHHHH MY CHILDHOOD!!!!
I'm still waiting for the new Episodes to come out since their still working on it.
Thanks for watching this. I really wish it had gotten more views. You're welcome to join the server in the description as well
@@bossdoor its released
Yep! Just saw it! Crazy to see
@@bossdoori wish the music was cool as the music of the episode 2
This remains the absolute hidden gem of Newgrounds. A part of me wants it to be in fnf so that it gains massive popularity, but another part absolutely dreads the idea of what people will do to it if it does.
Completely agree. It’s a beautiful series, but I think it just having a dedicated following of fans is also enough, too. I’ve been supporting SamBakZa on Patreon since the premiere of the new episode, and I don’t regret it.
I don't think it was hidden at all. It was popular as hell.
@@deusprogrammer_thekingofspace Unfortunately the show is not as popular and celebrated as it was nowadays. Everything is in FnF and whatever zoomers were into.
Im really glad people can still remember this piece of art. In the sea of Fnf art littering newgrounds, Im one of the active art poster there that still draw There She Is frequently. I want people to rediscover this gem of a series and at least acknowledge it.
Also the reason why the Jjinta set (the gangster scruffy bunnies) eventually came to their side is because they are actually the sons of a rabbit and a lion aka "Cabbits". They are literally the product of the forbidden love Doki and Nabi are experiencing
Charlie the unicorn.
there's been a new release animation! u should see it! if y haven't already!
I watched this whole saga in my childhood, but I honestly didn't appreciate how important it was to me personally until I found it again on youtube. Now I think about it regularly, and it still tugs my heartstrings years later. What an important series!
Tysm for watching, I love this series and am glad to remind people of how special it is
I absolutely adore There She Is. I ended up finding it by chance when marathoning Pico Day animations and watched Pico Day: Pathway Through NG. It had Pico travelling between different worlds of popular NG animations and even transforming into the same style, and guess which one of them he went into. That's right it was There She Is and that little segment alone had intrigued me enough to see what it was in the credits and from there on I'd watch all of There She Is and it became one of my favorite things on the entire internet. It's one of the few animations on Newgrounds that actually had a proper run and ending unlike most projects which just gave up and stopped. And it's just one of the most energetic, adorable and heartwarming creations on the website. I'm so glad to see someone finally talking about it and from my favorite guy too
Drinking game, Take a sip for how many times Boss said thirst
THIS IS AN EXTREME THIRST.
*Dies*
That was quite a script you wrote for this video. Always happy to see people talking about this series. The edit you put together near the start was a particular highlight.
Thank you. Wish this had gotten more views for sure
Its got a new installment just this year that recontextualizes the bunny gang.
Really big of you to make the content that you want, independent of monetization. Thank you for bringing this to us!
This show was so cute. I discovered it back in 2020 and had a HUGE phase for a while.
I’m excited for whenever the new episode comes out publicly. It was really fun and had a unique twist on the message of the original series.
Oh my goshhhhh what an absolute throw back. Thank you for covering a long time favorite animation
Gaaaawwwd, I love Doki & Nabi to bits! 'There she is' was one of the best things to come out of the 2010s... just showed it to a new friend 2 weeksa ago and now he is waiting for it to be turned into an anime!
Just recently the "another step" was released. (it exists for quite some time but as i remember it was gated behind a kickstarter campaign or something alike) It gives background info to the other characters and rounds off the worldbuilding in a very rough way. Also: i don't think gay couples make sense as a comparison here, as the 2 characters are distinctly different, not alike. If i'd hat to wager a guess, i'd say its about korean/japanese couples, which were seen as highly problematic.
They released another!!! I'm so happy I found this video. I would never have remembered the name if this video wasn't on my recommended.
I have watched this animation that was played, Bunny and Cat. Very much my childhood.
The one where the bunny fights all the guys or whatever?
@@bossdoor Yep, maybe I seen this around 2013ish?
I remember seeing the first part a while back but to see that it got multiple episodes is pretty cool
New episode of There She is dropped 9 days ago.
Zambakza made Witches and Bulldog Mansion my favorite korean bands, ever.
I love this story. It was pain to wait for years between episodes.
The story of Doki and Nabi is one of the best love stories.
There is nothing wrong in the love between korean and japanese people... I mean cats and bunnies!
I've probably watched this at least once a year since I found it around 2005.
This is the only series that still makes me cry like a baby
Man I remember the first time I saw this, it blew my mind then and even to this day it still does.
That animation wasnt the only one to crash newsgrounds portal Friday night funkin also crashed the entire newsgrounds site
Correction: the hedge hog in the original story alluded to passing away from the beating but the updated version had changed that part to parting ways the next morning.
What a neat little thing, something that I'd find entertaining. I'm impressed it wad able to literally break the site despite the length. The animation too is really nice and nostalgic to look back at. It reminds me of that dumb ytmv for the You Are An Idiot site. Nice video.
One of my first formative experiences on the Internet was my dad going on the Albino Blacksheep website in 2010 and showing me this series. It's stuck with me to this day.
This is probably my favourite video on this series so far. There she is really blew me away when I first saw it just before the beginning of the pandemic and it holds a special place in my heart.
Can't believe there's anew one
@@bossdoor I've been waiting for the youtube version to come out for a while, it's great to finally see it.
Another step's development is a whole another rabbit hole on it's own, actually.
Also fun fact: You know those thank you cards that SamBakZa has started giving out to fanarts? I was the first to receive one!
@@areakastudios6704 rabbit hole? I see what you did there
What happened?
Also didn't know it was available anywhere else
Something I noticed (many years later) is that Nabi rejects Doki initially because of the stigma, not really because he doesn't like her; he insists on her dating a rabbit because that's the problem, not her exactly
"Doki's own pet hedgehog passing away after defending her from mostly peaceful protesters"
I see what you did there lol
My sides, that line was hilarious as hell, because it's the bloody truth. xD
Based reference.
Im a new fan from like 2023 i saw it out of no where and i just got obsessed with it
Omg I loved this video series more than all the shock value content on newgrounds. Thanks for covering it!
I am absolutely sold. Going to watch right now
I'm so glad to have found this piece of art. Binged it after listening to your intro, and came back. Powerful stuff.
Makes my day.
And now there's a continuation with a step 6 which is more about the bunny gang. They're not really Yakuza more like street thugs. Yakuza implies a larger group than 3. They're just a biker gang of delinquents.
Then the legends themselves made a 6th step. Sure it's like a side step, but a step that I love nonetheless.
I can’t find it anywhere

@@bossdoorthe full video released a day ago on the Sambakza channel. It’s actually what brought me to this video.
The thing about this is that i didnt even know it ended until a year ago and i was shocked there was even a ending
Thank you so much for talking about this! Highly underrated classic that I hope catches fire again with the release of more episodes by SamBakZa. In the comments of "another step", they said they hope to create more stories of these characters in the future!
btw, apparently, one of the writers of the story has personal experience with this as he is Korean and his wife is Japanese, and they've experienced similar persecution in Korea, where interracial dating was still looked down upon.
There's so many people who will never know what it was like to be on Newgrounds daily and get to experience things like this.
"Nearly 20 year old...."
Hey, it's not......
.....fuck. I'm old.
don't use that picture for the thumbnail i WILL cry.
Thanks for watching. There She is deserves more video essays
I watch the series every few years, it's really good
happy new year!
Good job, nice vid.
I saw There She Is when I was a kid way back on Newgrounda, and I guess the story is pretty cliche but it hit me hard. My parents are different race from a time where mixed race relationships were still really rare, my grandparents were, as my mom put it "not very kind to him" and resented their marriage which eventually caused enough tension for them to divorce. I grew up in an area where I was the only kid with my family setup, so really struggled with being different and being bullied for it.
There She Is hit me hard, made me understand more how difficult their relationship was, as well feeling relatable in my own mixed, gay relationship. It still makes me tear up even as an adult.
One interesting element, is that theres a lot of parallels to Korea's actual culture, specifically around the stigma of korean x japanese relationships.
"Peaceful" protesters lol
I cried so much with this animation, I still cry watching it
my childhood animation
That was a nostalgia trip
I LOVE THERE SHE IS IM SOBBING
When I first saw this as a teenager I felt for doki but understood nabi kinda I didn’t know why at the time but then when I realized I was attracted to women as well as men and being from Louisiana it hit me doki was me in later years when I didn’t care who knew I was bisexual but when I was still in the closet I was nabi scared of the world and what they might do to me if they knew because in the south during the nineties and early two thousands it was wrong to love someone outside of the opposite sex nabi eventually falling for doki became me rejecting backward beliefs on the fact who’s it hurting if I date a woman instead of a man as long as it is not hurting anyone it’s no one business who I love
This was made during the tense relationship between Japanese and Korean people
Basically an era of extreme xenophobia between both races because of ww2
It was a protest against the irrational culture of hatred and how love will always triumph against any bigotry and racism

I watch this series 7 years ago
There's a bit of a sequel

Any Fnf Mod creators here?
Wanna make a mod vs DokixNabi?
Or maybe a classic modpack where you face of against classic NG characters like Dirge, Foamy, Snowball, Bitey, Larry, and Ofc DokixNabi:)
Or maybe add them to the FNF Online mod where in the normal game modes, you are walking with GF along side with them and in Funked mode, Nabi is just walking with BF and there are alot of anti-CatxRabbit signs and also anti-HumanxDemon sign. And then the song transetions as Nabi gets a call from Doki and GF saying their moving away, until you get picked up by Il-Ho and his gang and you now have to rap battle with Nabi against Il-Ho while riding his bike as they sing the motif of the song from Final step.
Hit me up you more talented mod creators if you wanted to make the mod with me:)
Hell yea
You see the next step?
Mhm! It was great
Did you see the new short?
TIL Episode five of this broke Newgrounds. Did it take down any other sites like Homestuck's Cascade did?
I think this is the most verbose I've ever heard you speak in a video
And thanks u for love
So cute
Me like a eloto
what? brokenewgrounds? ya like 10 years ago and you are doign anyting just just profttin on
8:40 I omor
Soooo any plan to link it here?
It’s on TH-cam
Is this a metaphor for interracial romance?
Yep
From what I understand, it's an allegory for Korean-Japanese relationships specifically, and the stigma around them, due to the history between the two nations
What’s the cartoon in the beginning?
._.
you didn't have to mention the potential gender reversal causing issues nowadays damn man lol
