Working in the dyno room makes Nick happy, but today he is making dreams come true for Steve, who wrecked his 1970 'Cuda nine years ago and hasn't hear his engine since. My first car was a 1971 Plymouth Duster 340, 4 speed transmission. I paid $1200 for it, back in 1976. I was only 16 years old. My mom wouldn't let me drive it until I could pay for my insurance myself. It was a hell of a lot of car for a teenager. It would get up and run. I loved that car.
The 340 was a beast in its day right off the show room floor, Made a believer out of many a big block owner.

340's are great for A-bodies. That performance engine was a great counterpart to Chevy's 327,350, and Ford's 302, and 351. The T/A/AAR 6 pack-340 was the pinnacle. Forged crank, special heads, offset rockers etc... Great engine for a small car...

I Had a 71 340 Cuda , when I was a kid , Sold it in 1984 , person I sold it to still has it today , saw it a few years ago I relived many memories, For You to get a picture like that and the story behind it ,, Priceless Memory, Very Nice He did that
I adored my Duster 340. That sweet little engine woke up a lot small and big block owners especially with the stock floor mounted 3-speed. My wife got challenged one day by her boss and his 350cid Corvette. He never did that again.

Had a '64 Barracuda I dropped in a 340 6-pack built for a dirt track car-got lucky finding that engine. That little beast was unbeaten by tagged cars-people started trailering in cars to beat it. Never should of let that gem get away from me.

Nice! 340 on the dyno, and had a couple of those motors back in the day, they were quick for a small block, and we built one up for a buddy about 12 yrs. ago, and it ran like a monster. He passed away a couple yrs. later after moving to another state, and his family sold it right away without even telling me they had. Still miss you Dennis, and may you R.I.P. That was an extra special moment when they unveiled that picture of you Nick..what a surprise! That was a Sweet car too, and wish you still had it.
When built strong, those engines are screaming little banshees with tons of torque.

I remember the 1968-70 383 was only rated at 325 horsepower. Here we have a 340 pushing out 340.
If you need a 340 but can't find one a 360 will fit in the same engine bay. There is a mopar performance small block that makes 380hp if you absolutely cannot find one anywhere else.
A guy I knew in the late 70's had a Challenger with a 340, 4 speed and he could light up the tires for almost a whole block in my home town. It was bad!
My 340 Duster, auto 3.91s pure-stock G ran mid 14s so big-blocks had to be on-the-game to catch me. Brand new the msrp was $ 2,740 with only 1 factory option - the posi 😁 .... no power-steering / brakes / windows or bucket seats. As bare-bones as possible. Even cracked the manifold in the same spot as this one. The one cheater-trick I used to be competitive with the class-leader 442 (455 / 365 ) is a good one.
The 440 Magnum carb had slightly larger secondaries but identical appearance. While opening-up the carb mounting the insides were cleaned-up and opened-up to match the gasket. And a little bit tighter valve springs gave a couple hundred more rpms. It then ran 14.2s at slightly over 100. Still didn’t beat that 442 that ran 13.9s Good fun.

Even one with tri power only made 320 hp not even 1hp per cubic inch ,mopa r didn't spend much R&D on there heads that's why not many mopars made 1 hp per cubic inch ,even Ford did better

You must have been racing low compression anti smog big block chevys, the 340 wouldn't even have a chance if compared equally.
Nick I have been restoring a datsun prostreet 280z 77 with a 440 witha 727 man shift 600hp 2600 lbs going to be the fastest car I have everbuilt. I like your show an I was born in windsor I am in austin texas now I have a need for speed It toped out at 156 at 6200 on GPS no quarter times YET

I'm working on rebuilding my 1968 340 and putting it in my 1978 D150 Warlock step side pick up that I'm also restoring. It was found in Kansas on a farm, nice farm truck when I'm done.

I had the same carb on my ‘68 Roadrunner and thought it performed well. I had a new ‘71 Duster 340 auto and it had the ThermoQuad which also worked well for me. I ran it at the strip bone stock with E70x14 Polyglass tires and a 3:23 ratio SureGrip differential. The car ran 14.03 secs at 101 m.p.h. I was happy with that.
Yeah my 70 340 ta Challenger would Trap at about a hundred and six mile per hour. The little six pack motor was very strong. I had this car when I was in high school in the 70s. I always figured the thing was running 13 s somewhere. No headers, Factory stock engine, but I did put a different performance spring kit in the vacuum advance end carburetors. Back in those days I had to order the kit from Ed hamburgers out in Toms River New Jersey. You couldn't buy them here in Southern Michigan. You couldn't get the stripes for the cars anymore either. Most of us just masking tape the stripes and cut around them with a razor, and then we painted our cars like that. If you were careful peeling the tape back off the stripes it actually looked pretty good. I repainted mine twice, it was plum crazy purple with black stripes and a houndstooth interior. Gorgeous car and it was the fastest small block in our town until I got rid of it. Oh yes the engine stayed here at home and still is LOL.
I had a 70 Challenger 340 4 sp shaker E70-14's and 3.23 gears. Left hand threaded lug nuts on left side, It had a Holley on it which at age 16 I couldn't sort out so I pulled a Thermoquad off of a 440 Polara Police car at the junkyard (Friendship Auto Parts Tabernacle NJ George $20) and I bought an adaptor plate $20, That 340 scared me the 1st time w./thermoquad I could swear the front wheels came off the ground (they didn't), I remember 1976 better than in remember this morning.
My wife's father walked into the Dodge dealership in 1968 and bought a new Dart 340 4sp with 390 rear gear. The car has 47000 miles on it and my wife at 64 years old still drag races it a few times a year. It runs in the high 13s through the stock exhaust on BF Goodrich radials. You turning 14.03 on those old Polyglass tires was an excellent time.
It always does my heart good to watch this channel.. An old shade tree mechanic still at it after all of these years.. I too turned my hand to mechanics starting at 11 years of age rebuilding old lawn mower engines.. I rebuilt my first car engine at 16 in 1967 and there was a time in the early 1970's when I had to make up my mind if I wanted to be a mechanic or a carpenter.. I became a carpenter, though I worked on cars for many many years.. Last year it finally became to much ,and after the 1964 T-bird... I finished working on cars.. My body worn out for all the years of abuse.. But I can still remember and still get my FIX at Nick's garage.. take care old man.. you make me feel young again.. with the beautiful sound of life, excitement and joy coming from your shop every day and the way you share that joy with us (me) Carry on.. and have a long and industrious life Nick..

I'm partial to 340's. Back in the day had a 71 Challenger R/T with the 340 4 speed with a fireball cam and a 3 angle valve job and a Holley 650 double pumper. It was one strong motor and sounded like nascar.
Nick I love watching your TH-cam channel it takes me back when I was a kid my dad had a 1956 De Soto station wagon had a hemi engine in it end it developed a rod knock so he parked it out in the field by the farm and then I got my hands on it my uncle Dave was a mechanic and he used to tell me stories of when they were in World War II when they had an engine develop a knock in a jeep or whatever it was that they would wrap leather around that rod and put it back together and send it out so that’s what I did and that’s where I learned to mechanic and drive from that old station wagon with the hemi engine in it of course the leather didn’t last all that long but it was fun working on it I guess I developed a passion like you do look forward to your next video keep up the good work I’ll be watching . 👍🤠❤️🇺🇸
Mr. Nick, i only discovered your website a few weeks ago and i love your videos. this one on a mopar 340 was especially enjoyable for me as i street raced a 68 Barracuda 340 4sp fastback Formula S when i was in high school (70-72). that car had hooker fenderwell headers, a holley 750 dp sitting on an Edlebroc aluminum high rise with a "cool can" (ice can cooler for the fuel line), a hurst comp plus shifter, shafer comp clutch and pressure plate and a 3:91 rear posi. with 8" slicks and open headers, it turned low 12's consistently in the 1/4 mile. i now have 4 Barracudas, 2 68's and 2 69's. one of the 68's is a recreation of the car i had in high school. one of the 69's is a numbers matching 383 4sp Formula S fastback and the other 69 is one of the rare "M-Code" 440's that i put a 4sp in. the big blocks are great but i can confidently power shift the 340's at 6k rpm without concern. i hope you keep on doing video's of mopars. best wishes and happy new year.
I have a '68 Barracuda Fastback with a modified 340 in it. Wish I lived nearer to Nicks' Garage we live in Northern Utah. 340's are one powerful motor, I love to surprise people with mine.
Never knew the 340 was so awesome,sounds great and you got to 340hp 1:1 ratio. Now I have another favorite engine.
My dad bought a 70 duster with a 340 and a 4 speed trans when I was 13, (I'm 38 now) he just sold it 2 summers ago to a local guy here and he is fixing it all up. Man that car was like a rocket on wheels, it had a 391 posi rear end (the guy we bought it from drag raced it for for a few years) it would do 120 with those gears before floating the valves. Not sure the rpm since the tach didn't work but it was reved up lol. You could cruise at 60 mph and punch it and be going 100 in the blink of an eye. I kinda miss it. It was red and black. Never forgey how it sounded. Mopar or no car!
Great videos, my first car at age 16 was a1964 Dodge 440 started out with a 318 ,I installed a1967 440 first mopar engine I rebuilt. That’s when It all started , wenching on cars and it never stopped , now i am age 64 and I owned over 30 cars over the years all Chrysler cars and that’s all I will drive to this day, watching your videos bring back great memories of rebuilding engines and cars over the years. I live Pennsylvania, I have bin gone to Carlisle Chrysler car show for over 30 years ,see you there .Keep the Great videos coming. Happy new year

@John Presnell I had a couple of them and it was always hard for me to find needles, jets, etc for me. With the big phenolic bowl they should have helped keep the fuel cool and you could swing a cat down the secondaries.
A real garage with some friendly people.
My dad friend had a 70 Cuda back in 1976, he had a set of headers, a Hurst 4 speed transmission shifter and a six pack set up on the carbs. He said it blew the rings, when he was at a red light he use to step on the gas while in neutral and a big cloud of black smoke would engulf the car behind him, that was until the day it started to put out a giant blue cloud. Dad said after the blue cloud started coming out he only keep the car for another six months and then sold it, but that was life back in 1977.
This really makes me all the more anxious to finally finish up my 340 on my stand in the garage and get to hear that sweet idle from it again after 20 years!!
I've been in the auto repair biz for 40 years. I ran a repair shop in my basement fo 20 years, until I ea hit with an autoimmune disorder in 2016. I absolutely love this channel, and have always wanted a 340 Duster. I'd love to have you build a 340 for me to put in a Duster. Maybe I could visit your shop someday. I live in East Tennessee. I enjoy your channel immensely!!!

This episode brought back memories. You cannot beat the 340. The toughest small block ever built. All the best in 2020 Nick and staff at Indy.
While it was a strong running engine, "toughest" I an exaggeration. For example, they used 2 bolt main blocks. Even the 6 pack versions did, though they had extra material that allowed engines builders to convert them to four bolt configurations.
When they tried to use them at Nascar they were too heavy and wouldn't run like the Chevy but never let facts get in your way.
Pete shea stock 340 dart against stock 350 Nova was always won in favor of the dart at the drag strip.

I have Dodge's last of this engine family in my late dads dodge 1500 truck. 5.9 l is great . love these engines.
Nick sure knows how to build them right. He doesn’t give up till he gets them exactly how he wants every detail. You just have to respect that.

I had one of these sweethearts in a 71' Demon and at 103K, spun a main bearing. It was never the same after a sub par rebuild. Great powerplant!!!

I had a 71 340 magnum that came out of a cuda I put it in a dodge dart and I swear was the best motor I ever had. That engine would rev almost 10k rpm and cranked out 375 hp and would go 145 mph. 90 psi oil pressure idling cold. 10:5:1 compression the motor was a beast. I now have a 5.7 345 cubic inch hemi in a challenger and its a nice engine but no whwre near the rpm because of all the pollution systems and the computer that limits its rpm. Love the video brings me back old times.

I’d be a kid in a candy store. I almost bought a pair of W2’s from a friend of a friend, until I found out they were cracked beyond repair. Seeing those on the bench remind me of the old days. We built some fast cars, the fastest of which ran a best of 8.72in a 8.90 index. We didn’t make the show because we couldn’t get it destined at the track. So much for seat of your pants building. A dyno would have made the difference! So sad you hurt your Cuda. I hope it’s back to life once the mill sits on the Kmember!
As far as Horsepower, remember that 275 was the factory rating. Some companies inflate their numbers to sell cars. Mopar deflated their rating on some engines to give the super stock racers and edge. In the case of the 340, a factory build actually brought 323 hp or so. Getting to 1 hp per cubic inch should be a cakewalk! As far as super stock racing in the NHRA was concerned, once officials saw how well they performed they factors the engines correctly.
With headers this motor would have made that 340 hp. A newer manifold, there you go. A comp cam slightly bigger than he original 340 camp, there again!
Can't tell you how proud i would be if that were me, but i do understand, or close to to it how much that picture must be. Proud of you, employees, and any one else involved. Being an electrician for 40 years it was great, but working in a shop, learning the change in engines, fuel injection, electronic ignition, wish i had stayed with it. Still love cars, have an 85 4+3 corvettewith a custom Borla exhaust. No mufflers, no resinators, straight exhaust pipes. Wife can hear me couple blocks away, then put your foot into it, I'm 20 years old again. Thanks again. I here adout Canada all the time, was born in Windsor, Ontario, but in south west Fl since1970. The 340 can be a nasty little motor. A guy I knew had one in a duster. It was just the right motor on the right platform. It hooked up, it was quick and fast. It was a good combination.

In 1971 Richard Brooks drove Mario Rossi's Dodge Daytona in the 1971 Daytona 500. It was powered by a 340 destroked to 305 by Keith Black. It developed 450 horsepower and ran continuously at 7-8000 rpm. Brooks tested it at from 9800 to just over 10,000 rpm down the straightaway. To know more about it, LUNCHBOX, NASCAR, 305 will get you there. So, yeah "the 340 can be a nasty little motor".

Helpful hint: Post the dyno numbers as a graphic after each pull or keep the camera focused on the computer screen while hes doing the pull. ;-)

I had a 1970 Duster 340 that terrorized a lot of big block Fords and Chevys! Nothing sounds quite as good as a little 340. It has its own unique sound. Watching Nick do his magic is like watching Michelangelo painting! Old school tuning is the best Nick!

Aside from the engine dyno and all that entails....this was a great video production! Truly professional camera work with lots of different views the audience wants to see. I really enjoyed the overhead video of the engine running at high RPM. GREAT audio, especially considering the enclosed environment and the level of ambient noise. I don't know how the crew did it, but it was a joy to watch this video. The quality of the videos on this channel is just getting better and better....GOOD WORK, NICK!

I love 340's. In a light car they can beat a 440. My friend did it all the time.
That's because a stock 440 is weak but so is a 340 ,440 4bbl 375 hp ,327 365 HP or a 350 with 370 HP or a 396 with 425HP with one carb
Absolutely true tge 70-72 Dodge Dart With the fact 340 was the fastest thing on the road outside of a corvette and rare “Production race engines”
Also peak HP don’t really mean squat, considering the 340s power and torque curve was flat... You had all the horsepower from ideal to third gear.... In lowest ETs in the 1/8 mile, peak ain’t really what matters.. It’s that broad torque curve that Officially moves the car down the track...

This takes me back to 1982 and my first car which I bought for $1200. A 1970 Barracuda with a "mildly built" 340 (Edlebrock 750 vac. sec., Mallory dual point, long tube headers and 10.5/1 if memory serves). Not the best choice for a 16 yr olds 1st car but I survived without crashing it. Sure would love to have it back, as it was, as well as 2 or 3 my brother had.
1970 340 stock 10.5 to 1 comp I had a 70 Challenger 340 4 spd shaker plum crazy w/white vinyl top white interior 16 years old 1st car $800. Later i had a 70 Swinger 340 4 speed $450. my sister bought a 65 SportFury 383 that was mint for $125.
I'm not biased too any one brand of American Muscle so I can honestly say IMVHO the timbre of Mopar V8s just always sound the best to my ears. I wish I was smart enough to know why all the greatest american V8s from the golden era all have a distinct and different tone. Almost all are pleasing to the ear. Thanks for these videos it's so satisfying to watch a master of their chosen craft at work. Especially when you can tell they still have a genuine love for what they do.Cheers!
It's the different shape/size/length of all the intake and exhaust ports and how its routed. Intake manifold, heads, exhaust. All different. Plus your different bores, strokes, angles. I know what you mean. I love classic cars and each and every ones unique sound! I have a '74 Plymouth Gold Duster with an LA360ci and I love it.....tunnels are the best!!
I had a 340 that I bought new in 1971 in a Demon. I aways knew it made more HP than the rated 275. In a light car and with proper gearing a 340 was more than a match for many big block cars.

Amazing, 340 hp with the factory exhaust manifolds and that photo at the end is too cool.
Tuned like that and with a good cooling system, that engine will be a mean little workhorse for 100k miles.....and then some. And soooo much fun to drop a little tiny nitrous shot on to. Just to keep the riffraff honest. Love the sound of those 340s.
My brother in law had one of these in his Duster. It ran okay I guess. It blew his mind when I could rev WAY more rpm out of my 350 Chevy that came out of a station wagon.

When I was a young man back in the day, I could have very easily have worked for and learned from
Nick had circumstances been different.
Vasili and the guys are very lucky to be able to do so now.
When Nick finally retires, that massive collection of experience, passion and knowledge will go with
him. We see that in the hobby all the time these days - when the old-timers "go to the house" as we
say down here, their collective knowledge base and experience go with them and the hobby suffers
for it.
It will be up to guys like Vasili to carry on what Nick started. I think he'll be just fine. :-)

340's were awesome ,between my brother and myself we had 4 of them,2 69 Darts(a Swinger and a GTS) and 2 340 Dusters
The Carter carb has the, "tall" metering rod covers for the Mopar AFB / AVS three stage metering rods and jets. Those carbs can be tuned with the Edelbrock two stage metering rods and jets by changing the metering rod covers to the flat, two stage metering rod covers. The stock 340 and 383 AVS is rated at 570 cfm. The 440 HP AVS carb has a higher flow rating. The stock Mopar carbs come with three stage metering rods and jets but can be converted to use the performance two stage metering rods, by changing the two covers and using the jets made for the two stage metering rods.

In 1982 when I was 18 I went to Goodyear to buy two tires for my 1969 Camaro. A black kid who worked at Goodyear approached me made some small talk and asked if I would follow him to the back of the shop. There he showed me his 1970 340ci Duster. I saw that it had a 4 speed and he told me it had 3.90 gears. If my memory serves me right the hood and trunk were fiberglass with no rear seat. He told me the motor was professionally built by a shop called “head up”. He said the big dollars were spent on the Heads which almost cost him the same amount to finish as the entire engine. The fastest street car in our group was a guy who owned a 454 Chevelle with nitrous. So we set up the race between the two cars on a Saturday evening. They raced for $250 (1982) and there was a minor dispute when someone noticed the Duster had 9” Cheater slicks. It wasn’t even close as a matter of fact at 900 feet it was embarrassing, the Duster had at least a 6 lengths lead at 900 feet the Chevelle closed hard but at the finish line it was the Duster by at least 3 car lengths. A incredible small block mopar and a young man that was able to go through those gears like a pro driver. Forgive me for reminiscing, but those were some great memories and great time in our country.

This brings back memories of a particular race from back in high school between one of these in a Cuda and a Mustang. It would have gone well except that there was a curve in the backroad where it was being run. The Mustang was able to take it and the Cuda was not. Down in a deep ditch, front-end damage including engine compartment intrusion, bunch of damage along the low side when it went in at high speed. Ugghh. It was out of commission for quite a while, too.
Their is a special touch to the way Mr Nick makes an engine look and sound sexy . His experience and dedication are second to none👌Cheers from NYC

when I was in the Navy stationed at Newport Rhode Island I bought a sweet little 69 Barracuda 340s..great running little engine...

@@NicksGarage thanks Nick..yes loved it..however moving my small family back here to Pittsburgh early in the morning towing a u-haul trailer near Carlisle Pa. the trailer wheels along a bend in the road grabbed an oil trail left by a truck threw us off the road rolling us as it separated..we were beaten up however the car did not survive ..wishing you and yours Nick a great New Years

@@bobcrawford5083 I only saw two like my electric blue fastback. 340/w 4 speed , wire wheels and 8.55 14 Michlin X radials . For its time in ( 1968 ) it was fast and could handle a crooked road wicked fast. Did i tell ya how much I miss it?
