    Nick: try to get down to DC sometime and visit the National Air and Space Museum on the Mall and out at Dulles Airport. You can also tour the restoration shop in Silver Spring, MD. I mention this because whenever the restorers need to make a part, like a strut perhaps, they engrave it as a reproduction so the next guy won’t think it’s original. You should mark your shift rod with “Nick’s Garage 2020”.
    My Mopar roots run deep. The first car I ever drove was my mother’s 1952 Dodge four door with the semi-automatic transmission. I got my license at 16 in 1961 in the family 1957 Chrysler New Yorker four door hardtop. I took the only behind the wheel driving test in my life in downtown Baltimore in mid-day traffic. The inspector had me parallel park that monster on the street too. “Just pull in there, Kid.” I think I impressed him, but with the fins out back with a radio antenna on each one, it was a snap. 392 first generation Hemi with 325 gross BHP of course. Later my older sister bought my grandparent’s 1952 Dodge business coupe. That one had a manual transmission with fluid drive not a torque converter. You could put it in third gear, let off the clutch, and the car would slowly accelerate with the engine at idle.
    Finally, I have a friend here in Annapolis who has an office in an industrial park. One side office, the other garage. I didn’t know about any of this when I first visited him. When I was about to leave he said “Look at this” and opened the door to the shop area. In there he had one of each Barracuda body style, a 1971 Duster drag car, and a Jensen. He’s getting on in years, but he still has the Jensen and one of the Barracudas.

It was a hard decision but we got the mach 1. We are talking 1977. I had a buddy that had a 71' 340 Demon 👿 that ran 11.43 quarters consistently. I have alot of Respect for those 340s'. I figured the mildly hyper 6 pack 340 with headers would make more than the basic 10:1 300 HP 327"... like 325 HP... surprised it did it with iron exhaust manifolds... thought you'd rev it to 6,000 RPMs, though... 340 was Chrysler's '327'... both liked to rev... 327's were actually a tad over rated in HP, but close to their rating...

      I drove a friends's 1970 Barracuda Trans-Am once. It was a 6-pack 340 that may have been hotter than other versions. Both cars have dual plane high rises, .480 cam in the 327, .465-.472 cam in the Mopar. Both cars have headers, both are Automatics with stall converters. The Malibu has 3.31 posi, the Mopar has 3.23’s. I’ve raced the 2 many times and my Dodge has never once pulled away from my Chevelle. I built both cars, with similar combinations and outcome is what it is.

    I really like the videos of these rarer classic muscle car engines. I prefer them in stock configuration just like they came off the factory line. It's like watching a living history of those years. I would be interested in seeing dyno runs of the high compression small blocks like the Chevy 327 L79 had solid came, and 11:1 compression. I know Ford had some of those also.

    I'm amazed the h.p. numbers are so low! The 340 4bbl engine y'all did for the 70 'Cuda i believe, was around 1 horse per cubic inch, I was expecting 360 to 375 horse from the 6 pack atleast! But y'all are only around 300 teens barely breaking 320,hmm. I'm very surprised it's not much higher! 326 h.p. 347 torque, i was waaay off compared to the other 340! This engine wasn't rumbling like the 4bbl at all either.maybe it's just not a "beastly block " from birth. What i mean by that is, some engines,regardless of all things from the factory being equal,seem to just have more balls and power than the one built before it and the same exact one built behind it! It's just some crazy anomaly that happens. My college buddy worked in Detroit for Chevrolet /GM all through the late 60's and 70s until they shut the plant down, after he survived his combat tour in Vietnam. He said for some strange reason or another, that although the engines were coming off the assembly line assembled basically to the same exact parts and specs,he noticed that some just had more "juice" than others. I'm wondering if that's the case with this build and block. Thanks again guys! great stuff, soundtrack and all, as always!

    About what I expected. Thec340 has the bore and stroke plus long rods to be competitive withe the 327 Andc350 Vhevd or the 352 Clevelsnd.BUT it doesn't have the heads or cam to flow enough to really usevthrv6 Pak.i have a 70 Challenger TA. It is a relatively heavy car
    20 years ago I pulled the engine .
    Set it n a corner.
    Built a 360 engine. Used a non CNC d set of Edelbrock heads and a relatively hot hydraulic flat tappet csm.Edelbrock Performer RPM intake two step hesders.This combo resulted in 424 hp and 440 ft lbs of torque.
    Which puts it squarely in the ball park with my Rochester injected 350 Cev engine in my 65 Vette.which put out 420 hp and 42l ft lbs of torque.
    And the 351 Cleveland in my Pantera 426 hp and 422 ft bs of torque
    ft bs of torque.
    For a very light Mopar say a Demon thev340 would be a nice engine with enough head and CA. But as delivered from t he factory in my opinion a sharp rumning 327 Chev running the factory solidlifter cam and in a 66 Chev II is going to be faster.
    For a heavier street car I think the 360 is the way to go because it will ae around 80 ft lbs nore
    torque than the 340.
    In fact it makes the same torquecas a stock 383.
    If I recall correctly Nicole builtvac360 and got really good results

If the 2 outside carbs are running rich and the center carb is running lean you would still get the O2 sensor reading correct. I think there is still some left in that six pack.. This engine runs on the middle carb till you kick the other two in. I was hoping for 360 hp with matching torque. These little T.A. motors can really get up there. Great job Nick. We need more video's from you. We are stuck at home! Try a 3.5 24 valve H.O motor on your Dyno. Yes its fuel injected. But doing a modern engine with headers and a laptop tune. Could take it from 250 hp and 255 torque to well over 300 hp and 290 torque. Its still a Chrysler motor. Come on Nick I have one in my Concorde LXI limited. Its the same motor as the 300m. Shawn

The carb system is very special and I see the love of the Master on setting the mixtures. 326 hp gross is what it ran on the day. Exceptionally well organised wedge engine with cast iron headers and its everything a 351 C 4v is with less cam, less cubes, simpler heads. Mopar engineering in these LA engines was exceptional. :-)

Now why doesn't the secondaries have accelerator pumps??? Could this problem occur in the field or just on the dyno???!!!

    • @karlkoenigstein4138
      @karlkoenigstein4138 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Pretty sure that the outboard carbs are supposed to be activated by vacuum signal from the venturi of the center carb (like a 4-bbl vacuum secondary carb). So by mechanically forcing them open, they’re probably opening a little early so it gets the bog when the engine goes lean for a moment... no effect on the peak power reading, but the drivability will actually be better in the car.

    • @bobmehlfelder1823
      @bobmehlfelder1823 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@karlkoenigstein4138 I appreciate your response. To me this is why most people probably complain about the driveability of the six pack, since what you've explained seems to be the issue at hand. Yes, I've driven dual carburetor engines, but I never noticed any bogging when full throttle was applied. These were two 2 bbl carbs with a primary and vacuum operated secondary throttle butterflies.

    Given that the 340 was created to offer 383-like power (330 HP) in a 318-sized package to be a better fit in the A-bodies, this came out close to what I'd have guessed. I've heard the four-barrel 340 with the 4-speed cam would dyno at about 320, so this result for the six-pak seems about right.

      The 340 was based on the LA 318 but was designed to withstand high RPM operation in drag and/or road racing. In a light vehicle such as the Mopar A body it gave many big block cars a run for their money.

      The Coal Dragon Forge smaller (identical) mains on 318/340. 360 has bigger main bearing. Makes 360 crank kinda pain in butt to put in 340. 318 crank will fit but takes too much to balance. Oh god , I could go off on tangents now lol

      In 1965 Chevy put the new 350 hp 327 in the Chevelle as 325 hp. In 1966 Chevy put it in the Chevy II in 325 hp form without the Corvette windage tray. In response, Mopar designed a new 331 engine for 1967 with a hydraulic cam. It's performance was embarrassing compared to the 327 and even the solid lifter 273, so Mopar did not release it. The 1967 and early 1968 318 LA engine blocks were thick enough to be bored to 4.00 inches for the 331. In the 1968 redesign of the 331 to 340, the intake ports were made the size of the 327 ports and so were the valves. The bore was bored to the Mopar maximum of 4.04", from 4.00" for 340 cubic inches. The original 340 camshafts, especially the manual transmission 1968 cam, were designed for 6500 RPM redline. Since cast pistons were used to keep costs ddown, the valve springs were weakened to protect the cast pistons, for a redline of 6000 RPM and usually wouldn't run that fast.The manual transmission cam was 22 degrees larger than the automatic cam, but with the valve springs it was difficult to take advantage of the larger cam. The cam was designed to specifically beat the Chevy 327, which was also a manual transmission only hydraulic cam.

    • @MaliciousSRT
      @MaliciousSRT 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @The Great Cornholio You can't bore a 318 out to be a 340. Also the 318's mostly used cast cranks where the 340s were forged. So were the rods and the 10.5:1 pistons, heads were 18 degree, 2.02, 1.60. Big dual plane intake. Saying a 318 is the same as 340 is like saying a 4.8L truck engine is the same as an LS1.

    • @mojunk19
      @mojunk19 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Coal Dragon Forge you should get your facts straight. The 318 and 340 main journals are 2.4995’ TO 2.5005 the rods are the same length to 6.123’ but the 318 weight is 726 grams and the 340 is 758 grams. The cranks are interchangeable and are both forged. 360s are small blocks but have very little in common with the 318-340s. There’s some parts that are but as far as the rotating assembly goes not much.

    I was a performance engine dyno operator at the Chrysler Tech Center from 1966 to 2007 and actually tested the 340 6 Pack along with all the other performance engines we developed. Back then we tested from 1200 rpm to 5600 rpm all 340 engines and we took readings every 400 rpm. We spent about 3 minutes at each speed taking all our readings manually by hand including F/A at every cylinder at every test point. Your numbers are pretty close to what we made back then. We ran the water pump off the the crank pulley. And by the way we were in the room with the engine running the tests. We put a wire cage around the engine to catch any parts if something broke. After 1970 the government set up safety standards to have the operators in separate room like they do now.

    I was working at a Chrysler Plymouth Imperial dealer in 1970. The 340 six pack cars were very fun. One of the things I remember Was we had a AAR Cuda. with the 340 6 pack and a Cuda with a 440 six pack. both had the same rear axle ratio, tire size and torqueflight transmission. The 340 car would hook up and come out of the hole very good. The 440 car had a traction problem. It was tricky to launch. That 340 would rev to 6000 before it shifted the 440 shifted at 5500. 2 out of 3 times the 340 would beat the 440 mainly because the 440 would smoke the tires and the 340 just hooked up and went. If we could get a good launch the 440 was definitely faster and would always be catching the 340 at the top end even with a poor launch. They had to replace the rear tires on the 440 before it was sold. We were told that Chrysler underrated the 340 horsepower and NHRA must have thought the same thing because they changed the class that they ran in to a higher horsepower class. Great Memories!

    THE 340ci IN GENERAL WAS A HIGHLY UNDER ESTIMATED ENGINE IN STREET RACING. IT WOULD BEAT DOWN ON THE CHEVY'S BUT WHEN IT CAME TO THE FORD'S. THEY HAD LOTS OF TROUBLE BEATING THEM. MY FRIEND JACK'S COUSIN CHRIS WHO WAS KNOWN AS THE SPARTAN. HAD A 1965 MUSTANG/STICK STREET DRIVEN CAR THAT RACE ON MOSHULU PARKWAY UP IN THE BRONX IN THE EARLY 1970'S. WITH A BASELINE 190HP 302 THAT CAME OUT OF GRANDMA'S STATION WAGON. THE LOWER BLOCK WAS COMPLETELY STOCK AND THE HEADS WERE PORTED AND POLISHED ON THE EXHAUST SIDE ONLY. IT HAD A HIGH LIFT CAM, 750 HOLLEY DOUBLE PUMPER, EDELBROCK ALUMINUM MANIFOLD, SODIUM FILLED EXHAUST VALVES. HE TOLD ME THAT THE CAR REVVED SO HIGH THAT HE CONSTANTLY TORE UP THE TIMING CHAIN AND HAD TO FREQUENTLY REPLACE THEM. THE CAR BACK THEN RAN 11.57'S CONSISTENTLY AND AT TIMES FASTER. THEY TOOK THIS CAR OUT TO NATIONAL SPEEDWAY IN LONG ISLAND AND TERRORIZE THE TRACK. THEY JUST COULDN'T BEAT HIM. IN THE END THEY PUT HIM AGAINST BILL GRUMPY WHO WAS RUNNING A BIG BLOCK 396 CAMARO. GRUMPY BEAT HIM BY ONLY 2 1/2 -3 CAR LENGTHS. YOU HAVE TO GIVE THE SMALL BLOCK FORD BIG CREDIT. I KNEW A GUYS WHO RAN A MUSTANG CALLED BOSS HORSE IN BAYSIDE QUEENS WHO WAS RUNNING 10.88 WITH A 289ci. AL RESPECT A LEGEND WHO RACED ON MOSHULU PARKWAY. HE WAS A BLACK FELLOW ABOUT 6'5", A SUPER OF A BUILDING WHO LIVED AND BREATHED FORD. AL RESPECT AND CHRIS WERE BEST FRIENDS AND SHARED THE APARTMENT TOGETHER. HE BUILT CHRIS'S 302 ENGINE AND AL RESPECT RACE A 1970 SUPER COBRA JET MACK 1 MUSTANG. AL RESPECTS MUSTANG NEVER LOST A RACE. HE MADE HIS LIVING RACING THIS MUSTANG FOR BIG MONEY. PEOPLE WOULD COME FROM ALL 5 BOROUGHS TO RACE HIM AND HE BLEW THEM ALL AWAY. FROM HEMI'S TO 427 L-88. HOW FAST WAS THE MACH 1 MUSTANG WAS NOBODY TRULY EVER KNEW. BUT WHEN HE RACED CHRIS WITH HIS MUSTANG THAT DID 11.57'S. HE LEFT CHRIS IN THE DUST. I HEARD UNBELIEVABLE STORY ABOUT AL RESPECT FROM CHRIS, BUT NEVER MET THE MAN PERSONALLY. I MET A MOVIE PRODUCER AROUND 10 YEARS AGO IN MANHATTAN. AND I TOLD HIM THAT I WAS INTERESTED FOR YEARS IN MAKING A MOVIE ABOUT THIS FELLOW AL RESPECT. WHEN I TOLD HIM THE STORY HE TOLD ME IF I WAS TO LOCATE AL RESPECT THAT I WAS TO COME BACK TO HIM. HE ALSO TOLD ME IF HE WASN'T ALIVE ANY LONGER. THAT I WAS TO TRY AND SECURE THE RIGHTS FROM HIS FAMILY TO MAKE A MOVIE ABOUT HIM. SADLY MY FRIEND JACK PASSED ON AND HE WAS THE ONLY WAY OF GETTING CONNECTED WITH HIS COUSIN CHRIS. THIS SUMMER I WILL TRY AND FIND JACK'S SISTERS AND THROUGH THEM I WILL TRY AND CONTACT CHRIS. IF THIS EVER WAS TO BECOME A MOVIE. IT WOULD BECOME AS BIG AS WHAT BOB GLIDDEN DID DURING HIS PROSTOCK YEARS.
