How WE Buried Our Shipping Container:Concrete Retention Wall & Slab

- We learned some valuable lessons in burying our shipping container and found an excellent option for our situation. We couldn’t be happier with how it turned out. This container will be used for extra storage. We wanted to be able to store all our belongings somewhere while we build our home, but didn’t want the eye sore of a huge blue container on our wilderness property. Then not having the headache of trying to have the container removed later is also a plus. We opted to do a rebar reinforced retention wall and slab over the container. We did a monolithic pour with the walls and footings. We have been so blessed to have generous people in our community loan equipment to us for tackling these major projects!

I have to give this guy credit for trying and being a good leader with his wife. On a pro level this is defiantly not the best way to do it. I wonder if the container even has a solid foundation under it or a French drain system? I'm sure looking back on it they probably should have used and ICF system. Hopefully they figured it all out. They do get an A for effort.
Best thing you COULD have done is poured a foundation oversized to the container and put the container in the foundation with proper drainage and water proofing. Well worth the added cost of saving a ceiling from caving in or having run off rust your walls away as they are exposed to the dirt (which they are no matter how dry the soil feels) The weight of the backhoe on top of the concrete roof slab is not supported by the walls.. very dangerous.

I agree on the foundation. Shipping containers are pretty sturdy but you are right needs to be protected by the moisture in the soil.

You will need to dig a trench down to the bottom along side and back of the container fit cadged rebar in trench and fill with concrete to the top of container. Reinforce the inside first before you start. If you don't you have just built a coffin, Sir. Like what you are doing. Just stay safe.

I have hauled containers for years and the one thing I noticed is that you didn't bury your container ceiling side down and floor as ceiling. The roof is weakest point of container and floor is reinforced to hold 40k lbs plus. The concrete and drainage was a excellent idea. On your next build, I hope you research flipping container upside down so you have the floor supporting the dirt and whatever weight you put on top of container. The other thing I noticed is no ventilation for inside of container. What a great job you and your family did though.
It’s strictly for storage so we didn’t put in ventilation, but we could easily make modifications later on down the road. Haven’t heard of flipping them upside down, but we’ll definitely keep that in mind and read into it.
Flipping it over is a brilliant idea. That makes a lot of sense, so we hope anyone wanting to do this reads your comment. We didn’t even consider that since it was already loaded up and we were just moving it into place not planning on unloading the whole thing.
Flipping over...hmmm I know what you trying to say bottom is stronger but in this case hi reinforced wicker top with concrete
Other think is bottom is not water proof so you my start having problems with liking

@@itsworthit5029 You can then weld some thin sheet metal on the new roof floor, make a flat surface to walk on

Is there a foundation or does the container just sit on bare earth? Shifting and settling is bad. Is there an exterior support barrier? Without side support the earth will eventually cave in the sides. Water proofing? Eventually the paint will degrade. Your soil is clay and will retain any ground moisture for years. These have to be done like a finished basement. The load support for the containers is on the corners. Not the top or sides. You put the cement over the top but if its not reinforced to the corners it will eventually fail. Hope no one is in there if it does.
The container is actually on a bed of rock. Second of all we have no moisture in the soil. Our soil up here is like concrete. For our particular situation it feels appropriate. Time will tell I guess. We share our mistakes and our successes on this channel. So far this has been a great success. Thank you for your insight and support. @@itsworthit5029 I read all your comments, and there was a lot of good advice when it comes to burying a shipping container, and that advice was totally ignored! You really need to do your homework on burying a shipping container, the last thing you want whether it sits on bedrock, and your soil has no water content, is for that shipping container to collapse with your family in it. Do some serious research before you have a disaster that can ruin your life for ever!

Idk? I mean wasn't sealed with Rhino liner for waterproofing and the inside wasn't braced.. long term this isn't going to be good for it?..

Make two heavy duty steel trusses that set on the floor, maybe 4" by 8" tube steel, place at 13 feet from each end. That should satisfy most people's worries about collapse.
I'm looking to do something similar here in AZ... Been drawing my designs up. Mine needs more windows tho... gonna burry it with on long side face out above grade maybe...

Not a negative criticism but dont let your kids hold timber while cutting it with a chop saw, if they drop it just a few inches it can bite the blade and when that saw grabs it can easily take your fingers... i should know

Big problem in a few years for you guys. The container will eventually decay from moisture because there no moisture sealant on the container and you didn't put concrete all around the container nor a foundation there for when it rain the earth to get soft and the container may shift because of no foundation.
I've seen many containers collapse underground because the side are not strong enough to hold the weight of wet earth after rain.
No learning by builder's before Construction ,,, sadly not a viable Construction method. ( Also.. read my other Comment's). I have been in every type of Construction all my Life and this project is not Productive of purpose provided...as a "Shelter" that would function more tha 6 years without decaying...sadly.
Nice family, but I sure hope this container didn’t collapse over time. There are a lot of things that weren’t done correctly for this one and I just don’t see it holding up for long. It can be dangerous when the sides and too aren’t not properly braced and supported.

Thank you for sharing. In considering something like this myself I set out to find information online about doing it. I become concerned after seeing many insist that it was a bad idea. I was beginning to think maybe I was heading in the wrong direction till I saw your video. Looks like all turn out great! The dump truck and loader driving back and forth over it afterwards indicates it is as strong as it needs to be! How much ceiling shoring did you do for the ceiling slab pour? Did you use a lightweight concrete on the ceiling slab?
You did good job and you can still improve this consideration by welding steal beam inside to support walls and selling this can be easily done

@@mrmotofy our soil is like concrete here. It has been 3 months+ since we finished this up. Solid as can be, no collapsing. Plus we’ve driven over the top of the container repeatedly with huge machinery!

🤣 everyone thinks it’s a bunker! If crap hits the fan perhaps…. for now it stores all our furniture/food storage until our home is built.
As many others have pointed out, containers are very specifically engineered to take weight on the corner castings. The 14 gauge corrugated corten steel is not designed to withstand the weight of the earth you're putting around it (between 200 and 600 pounds per square foot) and it doesn't seem like the proper reinforcements for the walls and ceiling were even attempted. Please do not let any children or unaffiliated adults in this "storage" room as it is structurally unsound.

Did not say if you had drainage around the container. Looks like you do not. Dirt is also against the side, which will cause it to collaspe later on. Containers are not meant to have weight on the sides. Now if you had about 10-12 inches along each side and filled that in with concrete while inside was braced till it cured, that would be fine. Only 1 piece of rebar in the top slab? I saw mesh. Not sure how that will hold up. Hope it holds up for your famlies sake. I don't see why people keep buring these containers like this. If done better, yes, they make ok shelter. Need drainage and support all around, but by then, you don't need the container! Just build a basement out of 8" concrete hollow blocks with a slap on top. Cheaper in the long run and MUCH SAFER!!
You did some great work but I am afraid it is not going to last. Foundation is going to be a problem and you did not use anything as a moisture barrier and that floor is going to rot. Should give you a good 7 to 10 years as a shelter and then rip the floor out and replace it with a moisture barrier.

Can I ask why you decided to mound up rather than bury under the ground?
The layout of the property has this container under the driveway. It was strategically placed between two hills which allowed for us to simply fill in over top and flatten between the two hills. It also gave us a place to put all the dirt from digging out for the foundation of the house. So it’s not actually “mounding up”, but really “leveling-off”.

Guaranteed to fail and collapse in, the container has already been damaged if you have not seen the previous video. Half the roof collapsed from being buried already. And no support or retainer wall along the sides from all that dirty. its not a matter of if it will, but when will it

With all that concrete, you could have just shotcrete the side of a hole, poured a roof and had twice the space.
Why....not use Poured Waterproof Cement and Rebar for the Shelter ? Hope you install a Solar & Battery Electric powered Water Sump Pump. If not do it now ... Also steel always Rust's unless coated with waterproof Epoxy or other protection . Dire future re-do .. will occure ; sadly.

Dude, you need to have braces inside of the container. As you place dirt on top of the conrete...even more weight....since I am commenting almost a year past...I hope it stayed together for you.

Can’t set a container just on dirt. Can’t bury a container in just dirt. Can’t gain proper compaction without using water. Can’t sit rebar in dirt. You should have done your homework.
It’s not just on dirt. It’s on top of a natural rock bed. Also we had a water truck at our disposal that we used in conjunction with the roller. It has been a year and everything has held up beautifully. Rebar isn’t set in dirt it’s up on chairs.
Seems like a lot of work just to bury a container . Why not just pour a basement without the container???

Been watching how to bury container videos and according to others your container will collapse under the weight of the dirt you put on top of it.
Still standing strong, no issues as of yet. 🤷🏻♀️ one suggestion we saw another commenter make was installing it upside down since the floor can be load bearing. We thought that would be a good idea. Ours was already loaded and that didn’t cross our minds at the time anyway. But if we could do it over, that would’ve saved us a lot of money on concrete. Oh well, next time.
