Are Smoothies Really Healthy? According To A Sugar Expert

  • Robert Lustig, a sugar expert and professor of both pediatrics and endocrinology, explains the problem with fruit smoothies. Fruits are composed of two types of fibers" soluble and insoluble. Both are beneficial to your health, particularly the health of your liver. But when the fruit is ground up in a smoothie, you lose the benefits of those insoluble fibers. So it makes more sense to just eat the fruit as is, rather than turning it into a smoothie.

Eating the fruit or veggies unwhizzed is obviously better but it doesn't hurt to have a smoothie occasionally. Also, most westerners don't eat enough fruit so if having a smoothie gets people to actually eat some, then that's gotta be encouraged!

People get so offended by this video, because "Smoothies Taste Good" and "At Least It gets me eating fruit/veggies." I think part of the reason people are so offended is because they think SMoothies are the end-all-be-all cure for your nutrition and want a simple solution. Unfortuntately, what Dr. Lustig is saying is completely correct. He's not saying smoothies don't have any nutritional value, its just that the nutritional value is hugely reduced by the way the fiber releases nutrients into the body (smoothies=fast release, chewing=slow release.) By all means, if you enjoy smoothies, and they are substitution for bad eating habits, they are an excellent choice, but knowledge is power, and it's important to know that you are indeed losing valuable fiber your body needs for growth. Smoothies do not replace chewing!

I'm fine with eating an orange. I don't need to swallow four oranges in one sitting. But as much as I like salads, it's not easy for myself or most people to consume enough healthy leafy greens. The easiest and fastest way to make a head of kale palatable is to blend or juice it up with a little fruit and water or watery vegetables. Most of us can't realistically spend an hour munching on a huge bowl of butter greens, not including the time and effort of preparing the greens in a a way that makes them tasty enough to eat in quantity. It's way easier to just combine them with an apple, celery, and lemon juice. Fast to make and eat, tasty, and healthier than what we would otherwise be eating.
I suppose that if I had private chefs following me around I wouldn't have much need of the convenience of blending. But green smoothies or juices are often the only realistic way for people to incorporate a lot of vegetables into their diet. Most who drink smoothies or juices still eat solid food with fiber in it. Having a smoothie or juice won't stop you from wanting foods in their natural state, which you can actually chew on.

For some people eating fruits are little bit hard specially kids, maybe we can eat half then we can make smoothies the other half.

your mistaken for fruit juice which is just sugar water, all the fruit goes into the smoothie, just like it going into your stomach. Veg smooths way healthier anyhoo

I hardly eat fruits so having a Smoothie is beneficial plus I feel stronger for it and I just started. Better than having chips or a steak!!! Healthy sugars meaning unprocessed sugars are healthy.

Understand the issues with fibre, but what about the nutritional benefits? Eating 2-3 pieces of fruit even if they are juiced must have some major health benefits?
