MSI Ventus 3X Plus OC nVidia RTX 3080 Disassembly & Thermal Pad Swap | Fix CRAZY Memory Temperatures

  • เผยแพร่เมื่อ 21 พ.ย. 2021
  • Well it happened, my 1.5 month old MSI RTX 3080 started overheating while crypto mining Ravencoin! I noticed the VRAM junction temperatures steadily increasing about a month after getting this card but didn't think much of it until I saw it hitting 110 degrees C (thermal limit) and the card slowing down. Big disappointment that the pads failed so quickly but at least it was a quick and cheap fix.
    Attempt at your own risk! Will most likely impact your warranty in certain countries!

    For anyone who is doubtful of this, just by following these instructions i dropped the memory temps from 102 to a constant and stable 76-78. It is crazy to see what kind of crappy thermal pads and paste, MSI uses. It is like they want the gards to fail lol.

    Maybe a bit late since this is an old video, but i have a similar MSI and this tip helped a lot to improve temps.
    Put kapton tape, to block air from going down the open parts of the heatsink. 2 of the 3 fans ... are doing mostly nothing to cool the heatsink fins. Air has an easy way out through the gaps of the heatink. If you block those openings, suddenly temps drop a lot.
    Of course changing pads and paste are required, to get heat on to the heatsink in the first place. But putting the tape there, helps getting rid of heat with less fan speed.

    Another TH-camr seemed to get amazing results by just applying thermal pads to the backplate opposite the memory chips, but that version of the 3080 didn't even have thermal pads for that area.

    • @Mangorille
      @Mangorille  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If there are no pads there, that would definitely help. On mine the thermal pads actually failed and became all oily and shiny. You can even see a bit of oil on the back of the card if you look closely. I suspect the back ones are shot too but not as noticeable as they do not do the bulk of the heat transfer (the front ones do).

      @@NalarZ 3mm rear pads seems to be the norm from my research as well. If you have some left over, why not right? For me, it didn't make sense to spend the money on 3mm pads for a 4 degree difference. Already runs way cooler with just the front pads.

    At what speeds do your fans work? Do you set them manually or does the machine adjust them? Do you overclock memory during mining?

    • @Mangorille
      @Mangorille  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I set the fan to manual and 80 percent on this card so that it runs a bit cooler than normal. You can leave it on auto and see what the temperatures look like based on your ambient. Yes, you do usually overclock the memory but it all depends on the coin you are mining. Some need memory overclocking while others do not.

    @johannesd.2347 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Since a few weeks my fans are ramping up like crazy on this card, the temp reported seems to be below 80°C tho. Should I swap the paste and pads nonetheless?

    • @Mangorille
      @Mangorille  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Use a software like HWMonitor to see if any of the temperatures on the card are out of whack. It's possible that the thermal pad on one particular component has failed and the fans are ramping up to try to cool that one component. When you say 80 degrees, is this the VRAM temperature or something else?

    • @johannesd.2347
      @johannesd.2347 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Mangorille Thank you for your replay. I changed the thermal pads and paste according to your video and it works perfectly fine now. :) One of the pads definitly failed, it was extremely oily there. The temp was the overall GPU temp in HWInfo, the memory was even hotter at around 100 degrees. I have around 55 to 65 degrees (overall temp) while gaming, depending on the game. Also the idle temps dropped significantly. So a big thank you from me! Your tutorial helped a lot!

I have two MSI Ti's that have 2mm on the chip side, but then I have a non-LHR (not sure who made it) that uses about 1mm on the chip side (which I replaced by doubling up .5mm's and did not have any thermal pads on the back side of the card to which I applied the 3mm.
