When I graduated High School in June of 1973 I drove across the country with 2 buddies; Massachusetts up to Canada, down to Southern California then up the coast. Our vehicle? A 1971 Ford E100 Van; 6 Cylinder, 3 on the tree! That was the heaviest thing I have ever done. Three teenagers stoned out the whole trip! 50 years ago next June. I was gone for 2 months and spent $330.00, but it was worth it. What an adventure! Cheep thrills. Put Alice Cooper's "School's Out" into the 8 track tape player and CRANK IT UP!! Your Van is a classic. Vanners love these old trucks. Econoline Vans were commercial vehicles and ran forever. Nice score. Thanks for churning up some great memories.
A friend of mine and I did pretty much the same thing. When we graduated high school in June, 1961, we drove all around the U.S. for 3 months during our summer vacation in a 1958 VW van. We're in our 80's now and we still talk about it. Yes, Mike and I are still in touch... friends for nearly 70 years.
Jared I don't know if the difference in format of this episode was intentional or not, but I absolutely loved how much more engaging you were with the camera while doing your work, and rather than a time lapse with background music we got to see commentary with a little fast forward rolled in. It really feels cleaner and more enjoyable overall. Glad to see the new spirit of the channel.
Trying to keep both! Sometimes the process will take a really long time and the Timelapse works well, but when time and situation allow I enjoy being able tot air you all along
in several videos with a lot of time lapse, you can tell that Jared is talking to the camera but it sometimes gets pushed together to keep the video from being way too long
@@TheQuestionableGarage agreed it does work well in bites. You also seemed far more casual and comfortable with the things you wanted to say and less show and tell, all good things.
@@TheQuestionableGarage I'd definitely be building her in the guise of a American take of a European twin wheel Ford Transit Supervan and use it on the drag and drive circuit. th-cam.com/video/YqEXJocHy2w/w-d-xo.html
I hope you keep the six and make it the six of all possible worlds six. Keep the engine. American sixes are the great unsung heroes and deserve more love.
I agree with you. Build the engine that’s in it (they are awesome, trustworthy engines) and keep the same transmission or another manual if that one has issues. Do something cool with the interior but keep it simple so it can still be used for a parts runner. Put some cool period rims on it (I always loved Cragars but Keystones were cool as well) and just drive and enjoy it. Can’t wait to se you and Derek together finishing this! You’re my two favorite TH-camrs!
My brother had a 69 model E100 with same engine and auto trans. I vote for camper as I'm fairly certain a guy can find most of your various specifics from boneyard camper vans - and therefore would be simple and budget friendly......
I'm all for your idea! Period correct van. I've fixed a number of rust heaps and this isn't one of them. It looks great as it is. Some slot mags, maybe even Cragars of Keystones, side pipes, shag carpet interior.. That would look badass.
Still really like the idea of keeping it simple. 300 straight 6 with EFI (factory or otherwise), add on overdrive, overhaul the suspension and that would be a great cruiser. The slot mag, side pipe freak van look would be pretty cool. Too much shag carpeting though and you might as well call it Pink's Pleasure Palace.
Whole heartedly agree. A nice 300 would still smoke the tires if you want. Slot mags and side pipes would be too cool. Put in some shag carpeting and maybe Mexican blanket curtains… Yahtzee!!
Ford 300 or building up the original engine was what i was thinking I'd like to see. That would be super fun to watch. The camper/tow rig idea seems cool too, but you may want more power eventually and the budget build is better.
I'd love to see a turbo'd and built Barra for a lazy 500 or so absolutely bulletproof ponies (and somewhere north of 600 lb:ft of torque) with the slot mags and sidepipe as a tow vehicle with a sleeper setup in the rear... but I am Aussie :)
Definitely keep the 240 in there! Lots of comments saying "300s are easier to find parts for", but the two are identical except for the rods and crank I believe. An Offenhauser intake with a 2 barrel for a bit more HP and torque seems to be perfect for a period correct mod. If you decide to go 4.9, the stock MPFI really bumped up the HP, and a '96 will have mass air flow for a taller cam grind
I vote for your idea of a period restoration. I think this would be cool to encounter in car shows with signage that shows everybody what it looks like stuck in the woods and the process to get it out and restore it. Period restoration for the win!
I like the idea of keeping original engine but tuning it and period modding it. Like you said, it’s done so well for 50 years do right by the van. Keep up the good work 👍🏻
Yes!!! A good, solid rebuild on the 240. Bump the compression up a little, cam upgrade, Offenhauser or Clifford intake with a small 4 barrel, dual outlet header and side exit exhaust. I think one cool touch would be to duplicate the doghouse in a clear material so you can see that tricked out six banger!
I love the idea of throwing on some period mods and Interior. I am I member of the vanning community and own a 74 E100 myself which is loaded with actual period mods from the 70s and I can personally attest to how cool it feels to drive. Throw on a set of flares, a visor and a wraparound rear sofa and cruise her
I think the Berra idea is awesome😁 And make it a mechanic van. With buildt inn toolboxes and parts for more revival episodes with VGG. Maybe a towhook so you can take a cartrailor with you😊 a Nice sterosystem for the long drives and 2 comfy carseats😊
Derek brought me to Jared, and im glad he did. Both these dudes are hilarious, like a car repair comedy duo.Like Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor with wrenches.Sub well earned!
Love it, the old girl seems proud to be a handy man van. I agree with you. I would love to see it to help you do your job. It wants to help. Maybe just make her up to date, comfortable and reliable.
After all the projects you've done lately, the hotrod parts runner is really the logical choice. Keep it simple, fun, and don't overbuild it. You deserve an easy project at this point.
I like your idea about a bumped up cruiser with a cool interior. It is also inline with what you were saying about a feller/fellette and a buddy doing something themselves. For the one that just tinkers with autos, the appeal of seeing a restoration that only requires a shade tree and a Harbor Freight tool kit is rather appealing. I also agree with Ryan in WA, below that the format was very good for this vid.
Those SOS pads did amazing!!! I Love the idea of keeping it an 240 Inline 6, I think it would look great as a periord correct build maybe track down some Discontinued parts like Morso valve covers, or a Finned holley?. Make it a 2 or 4bbl with nice throaty exhaust, little cam? I dig the bench seat idea.
Still have enough room to be a parts getter and for a day trip taking some friends fishing, bird hunting or to go watch a race. Dressed up enough that Freddy would diffidently ride in it, hoop-tee enough that Tyler would maybe ride in, but true to it’s life in the woods that Ed would not even come near it.
Top video, first time on your channel from UK after coming from VGG channel, love the dedication to remove the grime, I agree, like me you go all in but can’t change who we are!! 👍
Budget rebuild, definitely! Can't believe there is so much... -van left! But I guess I got to, I'm looking right at it! (Yeah, I came from VGG :D ) Seriously, this is a battler, a survivor. Pull the engine/tranny, rebuild and paint it, fix rusty floors and frame where needed, tractor paint on power barn and cargo floor, fix steering (power steering?), low budget interior, then do what needs doing to the engine to vroom it up a bit! -Like you said, a fun cruising van!
I love what you've done. Now as for my opinion on the build.. I really like your last idea of restoring it to what it was before. I am a big fan of keeping it original. I do like the bench seat idea and mags, but DO NOT lower it! Keep it at its original height. Just my opinion.
Jared is so refreshing compared to a lot of other car TH-camrs. He is much more relaxed and isn’t shouting in the camera as some others do. Keep the good work going Jared!
Take care of that little sweetheart and it'll love you forever. You getting it out of the woods made it very happy... it didn't like it out there. Well done, and thank you!
New channel Jared is really killing it…collabs with other TH-camrs, some tasteful editing and formats changes, a seeming boost in confidence in front of the camera for your channel, great stuff!
That engine survived 30 years, so many would cease up or need much more to run. It deserves to stay. Give it the love it deserves with a jared twist. Love the idea of an old beater van with some oomph
Great project collab with Derek! Please finish it all the way through! It’s exactly the kind of thing I want to do for my 15 year old daughter who needs a vehicle to drive to school daily
Coloradan here. Turn it into a back country mountain van. Put a power stroke diesel in it to handle the mountain passes and snow. Convert it to 4WD and put a lift on it with some proper beef for tires. Convert the roof to handle and carry some racks for skis and snowboards.
Found you through Derek's channel, and I gotta' say Im impressed so far. I love that you are saving such an awesome, often unloved piece of automotive history, and Im really feelin the idea of doing a period build and hot rodding the existing engine. As much as I love a V8, everyone does it and the Inlines get ZERO love, which is seriously sad as they are awesome engines. I just subbed to the channel, and I'm very excited to see where this goes. Much love from Toppenish, WA State. 🤘
Wow Jared, she came out looking really good! Nice work so far. Why not make her a lightly-hot-rodded, daily-driver, parts-getter with an 80's look and a quick-REMOVEABLE "party table" in the back? She could haul a driveline or new trans or a car door or hood in the back in the rain, right? ;)
I rescue vw busses. I’m subscribed and enjoyed your revival with Vice Grip Garage. You work well with him. “Never build a business on leased property, buy your own “. I wish you all the best on your channel.
This van turned out to be so cool! I love your idea to keep the overall look and add some period mods. Swapping in a Ford 300 engine gets a huge thumbs up from me, also. Low key visual interest, practicality, reliability, and comfort are what I think should be the goals for this wonderful van.
I love the idea of hopping up the original engine, some nice wheels, get everything working steering, brakes, etc, usable interior, hope you get Derek to help you should be fun!!!! Big improvement hard to believe it’s the same van that was sinking into the earth and becoming part of the woods!!! Looks great!!!! Make a great parts hauler!!!! I learned about your channel from you helping Derek on VGG with his builds!!!
Dude you need to make this a shop truck/hauler. Upgrade the engine install bigger brakes, air bags to haul /tow. As well as maybe add vintage air. Nice job you and Derek should team up on a few full builds. It could be interesting.
Trust your intuition on this build Jared. It’s right on the money for this old vehicle. Can’t wait to see the interior and the new wheels on it! Thanks for keeping it straight forward and authentic.
Jared, you and Derek both have a lot of great qualities and personalities that are suited for doing you on-camera humor, sarcasm, how-to-automotive-stuff, cool rescues, modifications and improvements, giving good advice, encouraging others to work on whatever project they have and showing yourselves having CAR FUN in all of it. We really like you both as the comments indicate. Keep doin' your thing. ;)
I like your period build idea - hounds tooth seats, slots with white letters, Clifford Performance 240 or 300 build. Add a nice Questionable Garage shop truck logo
It’s ‘Unquestionable’ that Jared is in his groove doing these rescue videos. It reminds me of the Budgetbuildz channel which I also enjoy. He rightly says that a lot of viewers want to see cool old stuff being brought back from the brink in an affordable way more than putting twin turbos on Lamborghinis. This van should be kept totally stock looking but made reliable and just a little livelier with mostly period parts used.
It cleaned up well! I think it would look good as-is but with the roof painted white. It would help cover up the unpainted areas and accent the light blue paint.
The period build yes. OMG yes. This country was built by a veritable army of forgotten workhorses just like that. The fact that one even exists is crazy. Hot rod the 240, and make it a fun driver.
Hey Jared 🙂 Love the old Econoline. My take is: modern brakes, suspension work, decent engine and auto transmission to make it an occasional tow rig, and D-ring load-securing eyes bolted through to the chassis in the rear. Patina stays (that’s non-negotiable for car guys 😆 ). Then use it as a gofer/parts-chaser. It would look epic with “Questionable Garage” and a period phone number in period font in faded/patina white 🙂
Really love this series and can't wait to see more old vehicles you save like this. Turned out great! I think you should go with a "best of both worlds" sorta build. Keep the look period correct both inside and out. Keep the patina on the exterior but make some minor upgrades to modernize the driving experience and comfort of the van while keeping the old school look.
I like your plan. Would probably be worth making it reliable while keeping it original with EFI and electronic ignition conversion. Limiting your useable liability to tire wear and maintenance makes the project viable for a long time to follow. Good luck with it. You've shown it justice so far.
Definitely some wheels, tires, brakes. A few mods on the motor to make Ricki Bobby talk about Jasmine Bleeth's skirt again. And an interior that will make a killer place to have a few "liquid snacks" in. In other words... ONE BADASS BOOZE CRUISER!! 😎
Thanks for the time and effort in making this series of videos and also the time and effort in bringing this great van back to life. You’re idea of an ‘80’s style hot-rod build is spot on and the end result will be pure nostalgia for many of us and a new take on style for those unlucky enough to have missed that wonderful era of back yard customization. Bravo!
The van was originally built for utility. Keep in that spirit. You can make it a camper/tow/parts van. It can carry parts and give you a place to crash as well. You don't have to go crazy to do that. Think utilitarian. Enjoyed the video
Jared, even after hearing your idea of hot rodding inline 6 and throwing on some neat wheels, I'm still liking the offhand suggestion of building this van into a basic camper van you can take on other revivals or just camp in whenever, dress it up a bit if you wanted to, but turning it into a camper van doesn't necessarily need to be that expensive. I'm an RV mechanic myself, and building something low budget for it wouldn't be terribly difficult: maybe build a platform to fit a full size bed, slap it in the back of the van, get some storage drawers underneath, done. Route in some fresh and gray water tanks into the van and a small sink housed in a countertop, that'd be easy with swappable jugs...routing in a basic 2/3 burner propane stove top could be really easy with a single propane line and mount a tank somewhere internally or externally for the rig, then slam in some overhead storage, before you know it, you've got a basic camper with still a substantial amount of space for hauling as that van is a pretty long chassis, food for thought. I'd love to see that, but even if you don't build it like that, I can't wait for the next video! Awesome video this time around, as the van looks amazing after this wash!
Agreed. Simple budget camper build. Some insulation, a surface to sleep on and a bucket full kitty litter. Maybe add cooking, auxiliary power and a work surface if ambitious. Bonus points if you can rig a Starlink.
If it was my van, I would put a 2.3 eco boost and matching tranny. Then logo it and turn it into a shop truck / touring tow rig. Slot mags would be amazing. They are my favorite. What ever you decide is going to be fun to watch! Looking forward to this build.
Loved your idea at the end , period correct revitalize. 70's Cragar mags etc. The paint is absolutely beautiful, just update the mechanicals , put in some era correct seats
Jared a suggestion. Why not turn fhis into a period correct two buds and a boat build? It looks big enough to fit a small going to the lake aluminum boat in there. Do the interior up with rod holders and fishing tackle storage. As a child of the 80s my parents had an old ford van very much like this. At one point we used it to haul our snall boat and take it to the water. This thing has a ton of room for gear and beer ;-)
Here's my idea. Freshen up the steering, and suspension, upgrade the brakes, then swap the engine with a GM 4200 Inline 6, also known as the Ameri-Barra, and turbo it! These engines have great response to being boosted. Build the interior to be a really nice campervan.
I was thinking of the 4200 as well, should be able to get one cheap from a wreckers and you'll actually be able to get parts for it. Who cares if it isn't a Ford motor, that's what hot rodding is all about! And a camper seems really appropriate, it's spent all this time in the woods with little critters living in it, now it could go back and be for bigger critters.
I built custom vans for a living in the late seventies early eighties. I would love to see a retro interior. Ours were a simple plywood floor with padded carpet, insulated walls covered with wood grain paneling, trimmed with the same carpet. (cut a four inch strip, double one edge over one inch, glue, staple this edge to the outside face, fold over the edge of the paneling and glue with contact glue) Hope this helps.
your idea is PERFECT... As you said that thing is a survivor the BEST BEST BEST way to honor the van is your idea.. mag wheels... reliable drivetrain and brakes.. nothing crazy... just simple and reliable... LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT
My opinion on the build. Since she’s a revival and has had a hard life. Keep the original engine. It is the heart of the machine. I think it time to let her to party the rest of her days. Hope you see this I know it was 10+ months ago.
Shop Van! If you are attending shows through the year you can carry your merch stand in it and use a foldup camp bed to sleep in it. You can fix it up as you go!
A guy can definitely see the influence of you hanging out with Derek lately. Approved.

This is a perfect platform for a shaginwagon! Keep it period, little lower to the ground, some curtains, disco ball, shag carpet, yup!
Yay! Welcome back to the channel, Project Campfire!
Project Campfire is a very suitable name for this van..keeper
Jared, you and Derek both have a lot of great qualities and personalities that are suited for doing you on-camera humor, sarcasm, how-to-automotive-stuff, cool rescues, modifications and improvements, giving good advice, encouraging others to work on whatever project they have and showing yourselves having CAR FUN in all of it. We really like you both as the comments indicate. Keep doin' your thing. ;)
I like your period build idea - hounds tooth seats, slots with white letters, Clifford Performance 240 or 300 build. Add a nice Questionable Garage shop truck logo
Oh and for sure the duo you did with Derek getting it out on the road was the absolute best of the “ will it runs”!
100% 200hp 240 is very doable and with a short trailer hitch could be a great (period correct) hauler/camper. I know, my dad had one.
I’m not a fan of patina but i’m a fan of Jared. Good work.
Your period correct idea is awesome, please keep the original motor and just add the tweaks as suggested!! What a revival!!!
Looks awesome Jared!
Really love when you and Derek do collabs. Keep it up!
Agreed; also some modern (not chromey) wheels
Rust reform and truck bedline the entire interior!
All of this with a 302!
That van looks amazingly better. Keep going with that van!
I like the old school idea! Wheels and tires and a low rider! Maybe some lights underneath! Gonna be watching!
I like your plan. Would probably be worth making it reliable while keeping it original with EFI and electronic ignition conversion. Limiting your useable liability to tire wear and maintenance makes the project viable for a long time to follow. Good luck with it. You've shown it justice so far.
Hey Jared, I really enjoyed part 1 & 2 of this rescue. I vote yes on your plan for the van. Looking to forward to part 3!
party vans are the best, i still say regardless it needs a v8, but a couch in the back with a tv and a place to chill with friends could always be fun
Bravo!
I watched you guys unbury this van, and now seeing how amazing you've made it look is so, so incredible! Great content! 👍😊
I agree with your idea, keep it as it is, add some useful mods and that's it.
Can’t believe the van cleaned up like that ! Looks great ! I’m with you 80’s style build for the win ! Thanks for sharing it !
Ford makes a 5cyl turbo diesel. Transits on the used market/crashed market are cheap as well.
The question isn’t should it be saved it should be is it worth it to save it.
Oh hell no, keep that junk engine away from this van! 😂
I will give your channel $500 if you wrap it with graphics that say “Free Candy”
This is a family friendly channel buddy. That's not nice. Funny. But not nice.
@@louisgarguilojr2592 what's so bad about giving free candy out. You must be fun at parties.
@@WillF1980 don't we already do that every year?
@@WillF1980 lol
@@joacimlopez9735 i guess we could charge five cents for the candy
I like the “ hotrod the original 240 idea”. Nice work!
I like your direction idea. The 240 would be fine with some upgrades. This van is deserving of this.
Love this channel. Beats any auto Sunday morning wrench tv show. Real hands on by the minute, real wrenching .. keep them rolling out… 👍👍
Glad you enjoy it!
I am so thrilled to see this continuation of the VGG video!
A hot rodded 6 in a row is PERFECT, love to see that.. and maybe split manifold dual exhaust? there's no sound like it!
This is one of my fav pulls from Derek. The big white 4 door Caddy and this. I think your idea of the period build is perfect!
your idea is PERFECT... As you said that thing is a survivor the BEST BEST BEST way to honor the van is your idea.. mag wheels... reliable drivetrain and brakes.. nothing crazy... just simple and reliable... LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT
I love this project. Make sure you finish it. Don’t stop make it nice.
I’m all for the period build! Make what’s there run perfect and use it as is with a sweet interior
Weekend racetrack camper van with a party pad on the roof. I’m new to the channel but loving it.
My opinion on the build. Since she’s a revival and has had a hard life. Keep the original engine. It is the heart of the machine. I think it time to let her to party the rest of her days. Hope you see this I know it was 10+ months ago.
Hot rod- slot mags- love those wheels- two of my cars have slots. Love the old school
Definitely a period early 80s build! That would be so rad!
Jared's talking about preserving the paint and the whole process of buffing and cleaning reminded me of Bob Ross.
Having been born in 1998, 40s-80s period builds always have my attention.
Beautiful I love when they clean out all the garbage and pressure wash it! That looks great!
Shop Van! If you are attending shows through the year you can carry your merch stand in it and use a foldup camp bed to sleep in it. You can fix it up as you go!
Was just as surprised to see the floor that solid 👍👍
Found this on Derek's channel. Lets see this baby run even better! I have another channel to watch!
