  • Prices for the Nintendo 64 are falling in 2022, more so than other games on other consoles. I decided to investigate and figure out why. By looking over many layers of data, I have found the answer.

Note, only four game systems have averages going down in 2022 (N64, Virtual Boy, GBC, Vectrex) with the N64 going down the fastest. This video is an investigation as to why the N64 is leading in this way.

This is interesting, I think n64 may fall into the same category of systems to collect for as atari 2600. 35 years after the popularity of these systems saw the most focus and then almost all interest is lost. This is because the generation that is nostalgic for these systems aren’t going to collect for it forever. They are going to stop collecting at a certain point. Nes and PlayStation do not fall into this category at all.

The first round of people getting out "collecting" after the pandemic are going to be the most casual of collectors. The N64 by far draws the most casual type of collectors/gamers. I call it the "bro" console. So many people remember playing Goldeneye, Mario Kart, and Smash bros in college dorms and whatnot back in the day.

N64 online is likely the main cause. Another could be that after the NES mini and SNES mini, people were hoping for a N64 mini that never came. Those that wanted it had to go physical or buy a Chinese emulation box. These boxes also made a resurgence in the last few years and emulation for that generation has improved greatly.

    I think it's a combination of a few things.
    1. Elevated pricing during the pandemic made it a good time for some collectors to sell, increasing supply in circulation.
    2. Physical games went up in price while ROM Carts remained similar in price, even if temporarily unavailable. Made the transition easier to justify for many, decreasing demand for physical cartridges. The N64 is the newest console that doesn't have an optical drive, so there's no modding required to use one.
    3. N64 on Nintendo Switch Online announced/debuted, which further reduced demand.

It could also be that modern TV's are not so kind to the N64. Most HDTV's now are phasing out AV inputs and opting for HDMI only which the N64 doesn't support nativity. Even if you do hook up a N64 to a HDTV, you'll find that the console's antialiasing filter looks far worse and blurrier on a HDTV versus using an old CRT TV (which most people don't have anymore).

The Chinese are releasing more and more knockoffs for the popular titles and, unfortunately, Pricecharting can't differentiate the knockoffs from the real copies, so the average selling prices of the popular titles will continue to decrease and come down somewhere closer to the knockoff prices... Pricecharting is only good for getting a rough estimate!

  • @fbafroguy6200

There are multiple reasons why n64 titles are going down in price but the main one has to be the lack of ‘great’ games coupled with most of the games people has nostalgia for on the n64 going to nso (even goldeneye is moving to nso, probably the n64 game with the most nostalgia behind it to the average person who grew up with the n64). I expect prices to go down to pre pandemic prices or close to that.

I'm more curious about why Sega 32X and CD are still going UP and by a LOT. I noticed the other day how expensive it was for a model 2 with just the 32X at a local shop and was confused. The hardware side is getting dumb for some things. Is there some kind of demand I'm missing? I've had a model 2 myself forever and always wanted to pick up the add-ons but never did for whatever reason and now due to prices, may never get a decently priced chance to do so.

As someone who recently obtained a N64, was stoked to see this video!
I think it was odd that I could find OoT for $20 locally, but I never questioned it. I figured the guy just wanted some money for a game he once loved, while just seeing it go to someone who valued it.
Usually it’s the titles themselves that push demand. Especially when you see those Madden N64 game going for like $1, same can be said for Majora’s Mask selling for ~$60.
The N64 Nintendo Online has to be a contributing factor also. There’s probably people who have off-loaded their physical media in favor of digital. I can’t not imagine that crowd at least exists, which may be pushing this surge in price-fall for that particular system even further.
Nevertheless the N64 always seemed like the most favorable console by a lot of people, so maybe it’s the console whose games are most affected by market shifts(?).
Love your videos mate, always informative and fun.

I really think it is the controllers. They are straight up painful to use, and the sticks go bad QUICK. Add to that a lot of growing pains with camera angles create a reality check type of situation. Despite very fond memories classic games like Goldeneye are pretty painful to play today.

    • @doc_sav
      @doc_sav ปีที่แล้ว

@@tlst94 tl;dr - Experiences would have been better with a more modern controller, but if we assume the games themselves didn't change, control difficulties that seem glaring in the modern view would still curb collector nostalgia in ways that older and newer retro systems don't.
That is a bit of a tricky question because developers would have been building the games to suit the controllers, and I presume that having a dual stick controller would have led to different lines of though in the development stages that could have fundamentally changed the way games controlled and played. But that is too wide of a net, so let's say they thought the games were going to use the original N64 controller but it was switched to a Wii classic controller at the last second.
To me the biggest problem with the N64 controller are the sticks that started to destroy themselves internally as soon as they were used, leaving you with a floppy, drifting, slow responding apparatus within weeks. Second would be having the controller designed for 3 different grip variations. The ergonomics of holding the controller, setting aside the stick issue, were actually really good. However, most games went with the center and right prong grip scheme, meaning that some buttons are always hard to reach, and kind of proved out that while having a controller with a bunch of different ways to use it is a cool idea, in practice what you really want is a sort of common basis for everything. Finally, single stick turned out not to be the way to go. The C buttons usually served as a stand in, either controlling other axes of 3d movement or being used to try to bully the camera into a good spot.
From the times I've used it, the Wii Classic sticks solve the stick quality problem, as do most modern controllers. We still battle drift over time, but it is far less of an issue. There is only one way to hold it, and all of the buttons are at your command. It does have 2 sticks, but since our developers did not know this at the time, they don't really factor as much as the other improvements. My beloved "Z" trigger from the middle prong of the N64 is of course gone, but that seems a reasonable trade.
So in the end a controller like the Wii classic definitely helps in some important ways. The big thing that they don't cure is the fact that N64 games were designed in an era when everyone was making their 3d control and camera engines from scratch with limited experience, code libraries, and reference to draw from. While that was tolerable at the time, from a modern perspective even the most well regarded setups still verge on torturous, no matter what controller you are using. Classic N64 games like Goldeneye, Star Fox, and Shadows of the Empire don't hold up to just pop in and play like NES and SNES Mario, Metroid, and Zelda games, and I think that boils down to the fact that those older games control in such a way that you rarely think about the controls at all, while they are a constant struggle with above mentioned N64 games. I don't think that is a misstep or anything, it is just a more awkward phase of playability which will inherently cause your nostalgia to crash into a brick wall, and hence reduce the desire to collect, good controller or not.

It had superior technology and more visually appealing games compared to the PS2 and was marginally weaker than the original Xbox...which it could have been more on par with if Nintendo didn't cheap out on avoiding to pay to use DVD technology and so paranoid about piracy.
Technically the N64 was inferior compared to the PS1 even though it was the more powerful console because of its use of carts which resulted in limited game memory, low res and blown up stretched textures that attributed to the N64 blurry look, poor muffled sound, no space for expansive cut scenes, and extra voices.

In terms of 3d rendering, n64 was a big step up from PS1. CDs being a cheaper per-byte storage medium doesn't effect 3D rendering. In fact, the ps1 used pre-rendered video files so often because they looked so much better than in game rendering.

good points all of them, but i think the market have also been overflooded with bootlegs that are hard to spot as a bootleg on sight. So we pretty much with the mix of it all went from actually playing old n64 classics like goldeneye or paper mario was a niche thing that needed some investment both in money and in time to find a copy at a reasonable price, to being very easy especially for some games being on the switch it self.
as someone else mentioned here, a lot of "casual" collecters are in the n64 market as well and i doubt many of them will see the difference of a bootleg and an official copy, and that would definitely bring down the prices. I am not certain of this, but if i'm right, the only thing that needs to be done to stop the deflation would be to put light on bootlegs being a thing and make people aware that they are paying for fake stuff when collecting and that way originals might increase a little in price again, being important as official originals.

Also consider that the N64 isn't *that* old either, so most people who owned one back in the day still have it in perfect condition more than likely with all their games working fine and the vast majority of people only want that, working console and working games, not perfect copies.

      @The_Real_DCT 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

With the NES, I think that drop has to do with the decline of those who grew up with it that are actively collecting for it. Since by now most of them have either gotten out of the hobby or completed their sets and moved on. Similar to what happened with Atari and other 2nd generation consoles before it. Because late 90's-Early 2000's was peak 2nd generation collecting but that dropped off for NES by the mid 2000's. That's just how the scene works from what I observed for my years in it. People will always gravitate the most for the Era that was the most nostalgic for them and maybe the generation after or a generation before but mostly that console generation they grew up in. Which causes prices to rise but eventually they go down because there's a smaller amount of people gunning for it because they are not as nostalgic for them

Everyone talks about wwf no mercy being the best wrestling game ever made so I paid $35 for a physical copy and honestly could not get into it. Picked up more games and slowly started to realize that maybe the games just don’t hold up well. I still have my n64 and I’m constantly going back and forth on whether or not I should sell it or not. Honestly, whatever the reason may be, I am happy this is happening to the N64. I personally love the N64 and I appreciate its game library more than most other people do so when I saw so many people picking up these games just because they're valuable it kind of irked me. The N64 is a console that can only truly be appreciated by those that grew up with it or by those that understand where it came from and what its capabilities are. I know what to expect from the N64 when I use it and, instead of comparing it to other consoles, I accept it for what it is. Most others are not going to see it that way and will just see something that doesn't look as good or control as good as other retro options. I'm always trying to collect new N64 games that I enjoy when I find them at good prices so it's great to see prices finally coming down to where they should be. Even though I own an Everdrive for the N64 I still do this because I just appreciate the console that much.

Also, beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. What you may see as something that isn't very good may be seen as something that is treasured by someone else. The N64 is far from perfect, but I love it regardless of its flaws and I accept it for what it is. If you don't like it, cool story bro. Not going to knock you for having an opinion, but I'd appreciate it if you left others who do enjoy it alone. They don't want to hear your opinion as much as you don't want to hear ours.

The only way for prices to come down is for people to just not buy it. Once most people realize these games should not be worth much and just stop buying them, the prices will drop to where they should. I'm calling it, by 2025, no one will care that much anymore about older games again. What we are seeing is the pandemic collectors getting rid of all their stuff and people getting priced out moving to emulation. I'd go with a ODE or everdrive any day then pay some of these prices.

N64 Prices Are Falling FASTER Than Other Systems (Why is That?)
You answered that question perfectly with one statement in the video "the games don't hold up as well as they did when they were a kid".
They spent years talking about how the N64 was the best thing ever, went out and spent several hundred dollars to relive those experiences, played extremely poorly aged games on disastrously designed controllers with ugly and blurry graphics (which are even worse on modern TVs) and then came to the horrible realization of "Oh no! All those people who told me that the N64 sucked were right, and I just wasted a s***load of money!", then sold it all off at a loss.
It's unfortunate, they could have gone with nearly every other system in existence and would have had a much better experience. So many folks finally taking off the nostalgia glasses is why the prices are dropping so fast. Nintendo has had some seriously amazing systems, the N64 just isn't one of them.

    Another interesting video, thank you.
Couple of things. The pandemic had no effect on video game prices. Viruses affect us humans, some animals and possibly Windows PCs. They do not infect N64 cartridges. It was the decision of governments around the world to place their populations under house arrest, which drove people onto eBay looking for something to do, a nostalgia fix and some escapism. So it's more accurate to say prices rose due to lockdowns, not the "pandemic".
Also I think rather than the "weekly price difference" column a column for the price difference as a percentage of the Jan 2022 price would have shed more light on which games have been affected and which haven't. The price difference on its own doesn't mean that much - a $400 game with a price difference of $20 has hardly changed, whereas a $40 game that's dropped by the same $20 has seen its price slashed 50%.

I hope prices keep going down, I have avoided N64 collecting wise for a few reasons. First, if you're not running an old crt set up the N64 looks bad on modern TV's, and the hd options for the system aren't that great and the HDMI for the system is pricey if you can't do it yourself.
Next up is the thing most of these other systems had and N64 doesn't is great jrpgs. Just not much there, most devs went with the CD based systems in this era. Normally if something is on another console that's usually the better version.
And really the great thing about the N64 was local coop and playing with your friends. And most of us are adults now and it's hard to get a few people that wants to play in the same room these days.
I think everything will come down on the used game market over the next year. The pandemic spike is over, most people have scratched the itch and are not buying up everything. Also tons of stuff is getting remakes and remasters.

that was the last real alternative to getting some of these games without paying 100 dollars for a single title.
the wiiu was the last bit of competition to the used market. and one of the few reasons why earthbound doesn't go above 170, because for around 180 you can buy earthbound and a wiiu for that price.
i predict that after the wiiu eshop goes down for good prices of all the games that were on that storefront will shoot up in price on the used market

You missed something that may factor. The love for the N64 was Kindled just like all other Nintendo but the factor that I think may be missing is N64 casual collectors during the pandemic quickly realized the N64 video quality and HD TVs is the biggest hurdle for enjoyment. So the switch online service really fill the void for the average person not a person like me that bought a retrotink just for better video quality. I have a CRt you have a CRT but really I see them throwing away crts every day. Also is there a metric that shows the amount on the market. When the price of something goes up people tend to list more and flood the market. It’s probably a combination of factors but don’t discount the video quality factor for the average person during the pandemic

The games being available on the switch is definitely a factor, but I think the N64 is also something of a boutique system. There were an astonishingly low number of games printed for it, but many of them demand a high dollar. I think that a lot of the collectibility of the system is contingent on the low numbers of games, the variances between prints, and the nostalgia, making the N64 more of a collector's console than most. With many Western countries facing increased inflation right now as well as the artificial bubble created in America by politicians redistributing wealth during the COVID panic thereby dropping cash in the pockets of people who didn't earn it and were thus eager to waste it, I think it makes perfect sense that many prices on games are coming down right now, but especially on those boutique items that people bought specifically as investments.
Edit: The assertion that video game prices coming down equals deflation is a strict non sequitur. Inflation indicates that the value of the dollar is decreasing, not that prices are coming down. Also, I know that in America, a lot of small-time video game buyers and sellers were inhibited from buying and selling games on many online marketplaces due to those marketplaces volunteering to report sales above 600 USD to the IRS.
