I love how Alex held him off with one arm taped down to deliver that badass jump front kick to win the points after all these years I still love that scene!!!!
Miss these movies ...game of death..the last dragon(my fave)...kickboxer and bloodsport....I use to love movies then...now we live in a movie and it's not as fun....but hey...we got TH-cam and memories (:
Man, this film takes me back years! Need to find the full movie. But in all fairness, his opponent should never go home again... "You remember that time you let that one-armed yankie kick you clean off the dojo matt?!? He kicked your head like a ball!!" 😅😂
Actually yes he was great. The problem is today's society is all about being emotionless, greedy & self-centered. Someone as focused, and team-oriented as Alex Grady is too unrealistic for people. It is Eric Robert's best role
It shows and kinda teaches their son or daughter that if you have faith, courage, and strength in your heart and body you can stand up to anything, You can teach or show that their minds are in complete control over your weaknesses like how the one Coach was telling Alex: LET THE PAIN GO, THERE IS NO PAIN. What she was doing is to get into Alex's head and tell him: GO TO A PLACE IN YOUR MIND AND LET THE PAIN GO FROM YOUR BODY, Slowly and slowly your pain in your body will disappear
Still an awesome scene to watch. Eric did not over-act at all. Anybody who had a dislocated shoulder will testify that it hurts like hell and popping it back into place ist even more painful.
I can testify to that. Hurts like hell. More when popped and i scream lounder than Eric. It took my coach almost half a small can of painkillers to make it go away. Plus we done have the pshycologist expert to talk ur mind away "there is no pain" crap.back in the late 80s
I guess it just depends on who you ask I know what a dislocation feels like but when mine was put back in I didnt have the benefit of unconsciousness. It's a terrible feeling not just the pain but just the sickening feeling knowing that one of your limbs is grotesquely misaligned some people throw up and I've always thought I know why they did though I didnt because I'm just that much man but I can sympathize with those who did and only hold them in minor contempt.
stupid racism fantasy. thats why! the makers make it so. dont talk of classics fighting, if not real life. fiction is a classic in human history, in fights. but a fiction section. in art, in art-fight, if its marked as [ART-FIGHT]. like those japanese things with their magic girls and huge evangelion robots. this is that, fiction.
holy shit I just finished watching this today, I've watched a bunch of times as a kid I can't believe I cried at the end. from when he doesn't kill the guy to when the Korean fighters give the medals. omg such a underrated action drama from the 80's and as cheesy as it can be it has a good message
To this day, I cant watch the movie to end without crying. After he tells him that Lee was the better man at the end and gives his condolences to his brother by not only telling him how good he was, but offering him to be his brother.
It might be tough to watch, but I see this scene as a Dad showing his son how not to quit. How from despair their is hope, and from hope you can grab glory.
Say what you want we've all been Alex's character! He was such a metaphor for life at some point in our lives life is hard its unforgiving and brutal and maybe even painful, it's all about do you keep getting up or do you fold in those crital moments and Alex kept getting up!
focusing your energy on what matters most and being willing to die for it putting your body mind and soul into it that's same level goku ultra instinct energy that less than 1 percent of the world can comprehend
As cheesy as this is, I really needed to see this . I’m struggling right now. This is a reminder for me that life is painful at times. But grit and will can win. Loved this movie as a kid .
1:52 I dislocated my shoulder when I was in high school on the wrestling team A guy I was wrestling flipped me backwards in A weird kind of way or illegal way he held my arm outwards and when I landed on ground my shoulder popped out and my shoulder was dislocated. My Coach, my assistant Coach and couple of my teammates had to hold me down while coach popped my shoulder back in. IN LAMINES TERMS I WAS SCREAMED LIKE ALEX WHEN TOMMY DID THAT TO ALEX
The sad news is that the two actors Phillip Rhee and Eric Roberts who played Tommy and Alex in The Best Of The Best are still alive while the three actors who played their teammates passed away. Rest in peace Chris Penn (Travis), John Dye (Virgil) and David Agresta (Sonny) 😭.

Kind of funny when the animosity between these two is so bitter that they literally want to turn the arena into a bloodbath trying to destroy each other yet at the end of it when the South Koreans are receiving their medals, Sae Jin Kwan says to Alex: "Alexander Grady of Portland, Oregon, I know all about you" in an admiration.
I remember the first time watching Alex fight after his shoulder was re-injured - First Thought - Anybody hard enough to do that deserves a win Second Thought - His son just saw a master class example of courage.
I also loved this movie when I was a kid. But imagine if the ultimate fighting really applied these rules... some movies of our childhood should never be watched again when we're adults, hahahaha!
Man, I already fought Tae Kwon Do, and I went through something similar, my shoulder leaves the place because of a fight, a master pulled and the pain that the actor represents is what I spent of course I could not go back and finish the fight , because it was in the middle of the third round.

I dislocated my shoulder when I was 17 and I understand. I was sledding and wrecked off a jump flew off the tube and when I landed it popped right out. I was so stoned I didn't really know I did it until about 20 minutes later and my friend who was in hockey he popped it back in and the next morning I tried to to to work and I couldn't move my arm and so they sent me home and I went to the doctor and they popped it in for real with a shot of painkiller it still hurt like hell I had to wear a sling for a 6 weeks and of course it was my dominant hand and had to do my finals before Christmas break with my right hand which sucked but I lived. It still bothers me once in a while if I move a certain way it's like it will pop right out. I reinjured it about 7 years later when I was being pulled by a boat and the driver was going one way and I was facing the other and when the rope slack tightened I was flung into the air about 10 feet and spun like a top when I hit my shoulder was already popped and i was able to just pop it back in by myself. Didn't hurt as bad that time at all.
This blow, if well done, can be done in the damage, when fighting tae kwon do, trained this trough a lot, the size is the one for which the whole opening behaves, but when you do a fall of a defense is very difficult. Be at peace brother.

I agree I wish he had done more martial arts movies
Eric Robert’s was awesome in this.... I always get a lump in my throat when he screams... “Tape it uuuuup!!!”
This movie along with Bloodsport have to be two of the best tournament style fighting movies of all time.
The choreography between Tommy and Dae Han is probably one of the best fight scenes ever made.
I love how Alex Showed his son how Brave how he was! I love it ..I love it. . Boys need to see their fathers doing this

I HAVE dislocated my shoulder. That is pain beyond pain.
such an underrated movie,Eric Roberts brought his A+ acting chops for this one.
Grady counters and scores, man it still puts goosebumps on my arms.
I have so much nostalgia for this movie.
Say what you want about Eric Roberts. But he acted his ass off in this scene.
Best fighting scene ever "True Grit & Heart!" Whether good guy or bad guy he's a great actor
He really did...I felt his pain....that dumb blond ruined it tho...she was as awful as he was good

Did anyone else notice that the move Kwon broke his shoulder with was the same move we saw him break the cement block with earlier?
and the opening punch between Tommy and Dae Han is what Dae Han used to break the last brick on his reel.
This blow, if well done, can be done in the damage, when fighting tae kwon do, trained this trough a lot, the size is the one for which the whole opening behaves, but when you do a fall of a defense is very difficult. Be at peace brother.
It's a jump ax kick. As stated it's a powerful technique often intended as a finishing technique cause as shown it can do serious damage if not cripple an opponent. Done properly, it can drive 3/4 of the body weight behind the leg like a normal ax kick PLUS the effect of gravity on the downwards motion of the body. I used to be on my Do Jhang's demo team and used this move as part of a breaking demo. Cleaved through a 1.5-inch thick cinder block with ease.
