The ending was so great when Dae Han approaches Tommy and he says, "to save a life in defeat is to earn victory and honor within, your brother too was a great fighter and I deeply regret your loss and I offer myself as your brother".

When Dae Han approached Tommy and he says, "to save a life in defeat is to earn victory and honor within, your brother too was a great fighter and I deeply regret your loss and I offer myself as your brother" meant he was truly remorseful for his actions against Tommy and his family all those years earlier. Tommy hugging and forgiving him released all the anger that they both were and had been experiencing for years.

I'm 50 today and this movie still touch me as it was when I was a teenager. I love the skill of both men but the end was unexpected. It taught me in life that there is a time when we need to just hold back, and let it go. Revenge is sweet but mercy and compassion is so much sweeter. What a movie, perhaps the best fight amd the best storyline I have ever watched.

Man, this movie just hits. You can't really explain why it's so good. It's just magic. Everything in the last 20 years has been such trash, and I don't know why. It's not the internet, it's not society, people want good movies like this no matter how ridiculous they seem. It's almost like they want to demoralize us or something. Man what a bleak future.

Best of the Best was Karate Kid for grown-ups, Dae Han gave us chills as kids in the 80s, all the times we fell flat on our asses trying to emulate the jumping side-kick-to-back-spin-kick he pulls in the beginning. Eric Roberts was pathetic, crying and yelling all the time, a horrible example of overacting, besides, guy has no clue about martial arts, let alone TKD. James Earl Jones is a fine actor, but no clue about martial arts neither, you can tell in almost every scene, should have prepared them better for their roles. Kudos to Philipp Rhee and the Koreans, bad ass performances.

One of, if not THE greatest and most underrated karate films of the 80s/90s. I used to compete in full contact on the European circuits (Shotokan and Tae Kwon Do) and this film is pretty representative of ‘proper’ full contact karate at the time. unfortunately, it’s a lot different now, with the ‘contact’ not being so much and a lot more restrictions in place

Shame it didn't show the ending where the Korean team put their medals over the Americans heads in acknowledgement that their win was only technical and Tommy could've won it if he'd been willing to really damage Dae Han. That was a pretty original ending for an American martial arts film, which are very rarely, if ever about magnanimity.
Even better is the bit where Dae Han walks up to Tommy and tells him that he grieves for the loss of Tommy's brother and offers himself as a surrogate. Real emotional stuff.

Dae Han never grieved once about killing Tommy's brother. He was smirking at Tommy most of the time. And a guy with a guilty conscience doesn't laugh as he illegally hits his opponent multiple times. The part of the movie where he apologizes was totally contrived & unrealistic. Dae Han was a cold-blooded bastard.

Funny is I never cried when I was young till I got older and my empathy went through the roof of understanding Tommy's pain fear anger and why he held back, vengeance was in his hands and did something more powerful restraint the hardest despline for us martial artist. Movie is sorely underrated. A must have in the martial arts archive. Much to Phillip and Simon. 😥😥 The technical kicks were perfection. Can't stand some movies with weak sloppy kicks not this one. Them feet were smooth a boxers jab. Goose bumps.
