They did it! The latest Blackmagic update for the ATEM Mini series switchers now has an audio delay function (up to 8 frames). Now go have some audio delay fun! Download the latest update here: www.blackmagicdesign.com/support/family/atem-live-production-switchers
I use OBS with the original ATEM Mini. The delay audio was 250 milliseconds. It took me about five sample videos to get audio/video to sync. I look forward to day I upgrade to the PRO and eliminate OBS.
Thank you so much. I am using the ATEM Mini Pro in a church environment and the music we were streaming was embarrassing. The knowledge you have provided will help a lot.
I’m a sound engineer just starting to use the ATEM and other streaming gear - this is the first ever video I’ve seen on this gear from a sound perspective - thanks a lot, you’ve probably saved me a lot of time and trouble! Keep up the good work sir!
From one audio guy to another, thanks for the great review! I've seen a lot of walkthroughs of this from video guys, and they left a lot to be desired. Strong work!
Very nice explanation covering the ATEM Mini Pro, especially on the audio. Kudos for not having some annoying background music playing during the video.
Additional info: I noticed 4 frames(which isnt terrible or noticeable to average viewers) but if you are a meticulous person, you will notice. So I used audio/video sync test video to be able to get the precise number of frames of delay and it was exactly four frames. If your atem mini output is set to 24fps, 1 frame will be 41.67ms delay. So for 4frames, you need -167ms delay to correct the sync isse. This can be corrected in OBS with the offset sync in audio advanced setting. If you are not using OBS and you don't have the money for expensive mixers with delay functions, you can pick up a Beringher Shark FBQ 100 feedback destroyer on amazon for $120. It has a delay feature. And delay your audio from there before inputting it into the atem and you are good to go. I personally prefer the Atem Mini to the Atem Mini Pro because I like the fact that I can record my HDMI out to my external monitor with gives me a prores file than the very highly compressed file of the USB C of the pro. Also on the pro version u cant be recording to the Usb C disk and be connected to your system with the chord at thesame time. Just doesn't work. Multiview is good but it is not as important to me as been able to record my files in prores on a recorder monitor. I already have my hack around multiview on the Atem mini. For $300 less, I very much prefer the Atem mini to the pro
That is great info! Especially the OBS hack! I’ve used OBS in the past, but that is what I like about the pro...built in encoder for streaming! That’s a big one for me because the hardware can take care of the streaming and I don’t have to bog down my old laptop with extra software in the background. But hey, to each his own, right? Thanks for checking out the video and putting out that info!
Awesome man! Glad you found that. @alexpettitt had a similar video where he shared how he ran a video podcast for some friends. He had a dual 1/4” to single 1/8” cable and ran it into one of his Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4ks and brought just that audio to the broadcast. As long as you can get audio to one of your cameras it shouldn’t be delayed at all. The delay only comes through the mic inputs. Thanks again for watching the video! Good luck on getting the Pro!
I really wish the ATEM Mini and ATEM Mini Pro has a headphone jack. It would be easier to adjust the audio levels if you could actually hear the output from the ATEM. I was hosting a Google Meet over the weekend and playing a video off of a BMD HyperDeck Studio Mini. The people on the Meet were complaining that the audio was too loud. From the ATEM Software, the audio meters were showing fine levels. Might just be Google Meet, but if you're live streaming to TH-cam, Facebook, Twitch, custom RTSP or through a re-stream, it would be nice to know for sure.
@@RyanKnowsNothing Alex Pettitt explained 2 work arounds. Basically, feeding a laptop to use that headphone out or feeding a monitor that has a headphone out.
This is a common issue with lots of the prosumer cameras these days too (ie Sony a6400, awesome TH-cam camera, no headphone jack). An external HDMI monitor with headphone jack works great! I got a cheap Neewer 5.5" Monitor and the audio quality is great.
A change of 3 dB is accepted as the smallest difference in level that is easily heard by most listeners listening to speech or music. It is a slight increase or decrease in volume. To me that seems to be a relevant amount of change for every time you press the up or down button for the volume... Other than that, I learned a lot from your video and enjoyed it very much. Thank you for sharing!
Oh I’m with you. It is acceptable for sure. Where it deviates from what I usually have available to me as a broadcast audio engineer is the ability to fine tune the levels. On a normal broadcast console, when at Unity you are adjusting in sometimes 0.1db increments to make the levels just right. That’s the only reason I brought it up. I am experimenting with some midi controllers that could possibly allow deeper control of the audio functions. Thanks man!
This was super helpful! I use this device to broadcast my dj gigs and the audio levels coming in from my dj mixer have been driving me crazy 🙉 Now I know why. Thank you!
Great news they updated today and you can delay the audio! I loved how you talked about vocals. I wondered if you could discuss how you would mix for a live band environment that is being streamed.
I know! It made me quite happy. I’m hoping to have a follow up video shortly. However my last video on how to fix the problem is now useless! Ha! Thanks Aaron!
Oh, and I'll try to look into mixing a live band. It shouldn't be that hard now that the delay thing is fixed. Just come off of a mixer with a dual XLR or 1/4" to 1/8" input on the ATEM mini/pro and make sure it's on line level. Maybe have the drummer hit the snare a couple of times to get the delay time, delay it, and you're good to go!
@@RyanKnowsNothing I'm in the same boat, life long audio guy slowly learning video and now streaming. Thanks for the in depth audio info. Still waiting for mine to ship.
Is it a good option not to connect your audio interface to to audio inputs of the Item, but instead select the audio interface as an audio source in OBS?
The lack of XLR inputs on the device kills it for me. Or even quarter inch. Or adat. adat would be great, to go directly from my preamp and audio interface digitally.
Yeah, I get it. I hope they release a larger unit with adat or XLR in the future, even if it's more expensive. I'd buy that, even if it was a grand, because it would solve all of my issues with one device. Their web presenter unit is limited to 720p, and if I understand their broadcast units correctly, they don't provide livestreaming capabilities, so I would have to get a third party device to use with those to stream the output in 1080 or 4k. This unit has almost everything I want in one unit, except for proper pro audio. I guess I could use adapters or cables to go from My Scarlett 18i20 XLR/quarter inch to the mini, but it seems jank to do that. Especially if in the future they were to offer something with adat.
@@grateful4068 agreed. I use the ATEM extreme and come out of an X32. I’m looking into audio embedder options, ideally all across AES or SPDIF onto HDMI. I never use all 8 on the mini so have capacity. Just need to find a suitable embedder...
Huge thanks, I do a LOT of audio productions in Logic AND video production, but jumping into both/streaming this weekend. Your video helped me get 100% up to speed on the ATEM audio configuration in 5 min. THANKS!
Hey, for an all things audio post I would have expected some info on cabling. If I missed it, sorry, long video. Given the "audio split" showed two tracks (L/R) per Mic input I am guessing these 1/8" jacks are stereo unbalanced rather than mini-TRS balanced mono inputs? So 4 mic preamps total (2 per input)? You mention using digital mixer delay to fix sync between analog and digital (hdmi) inputs. What about using an hdmi audio embedder and then using an HDMI input for your external audio rather than the analog inputs? I'm guessing the sync there will be better if you can spare an HDMI port. It certainly should be cheaper than needing to buy an audio mixer with built-in delay function I would think. Downside might be is more conversions as I am guessing all the digital audio inputs are converted to analog for mixing in the Atem Mini before re-encoding for output? Or is it a digital mixer with digital-digital encoding on output?
The reason why the knobs are turned left and right is to prevent mouse lift when in live broadcast. There's more real estate on a monitor to drag the mouse width wise compared to height wise. Also, another good reason why you would want to split an audio channel to be separate is when you have a preamp connected to your camera like most sony's and lumix hardware. If you have the XLR device say for the lumix cameras, you'll want to control those separately if they are on two different people in the shot.
Hey Ryan thanks for the video. I've been using the pro for about a year now but, due to church renovation, had occasion to reconfigure our setup. What I wanted to do was to connect the mixer output from the choir loft into mic 2 and the output from the "house" mixer into mic 1. What I discovered, unless I've got a hardware issue or erroneous setup, is that you can't mix mic 1 & 2 within the Atem Mini Pro. I can't find any documentation the proves or disproves this.
Thanks so much!!! you just made my day! we just started a live stream for a car brand, providing them an alternative to the original product trainings we used to provide. With Covid, we are now forced to go new ways (which is actually fascinating), but also learn sound and stream and video tech... pretty impressive. So, your post just resolved and enlightened some of the shadows I still have :-) great work!!!
Thanks Wayan! Glad I could help. It’s definitely a streaming world now. 99% of the meetings I currently attend are through Zoom Or Microsoft Teams. It’s pretty nuts!
Great job, I love your explanations. Thank you. On June 9th, 2020, a new ATEM Switchers 8.2.3 Update was released! Adds ability for users to select up to 8 frames of audio delay on analog mic inputs of ATEM Mini or ATEM Mini Pro to maintain sync with HDMI cameras, plus the ability to scale the DVE to greater than 100%. I guess the ATEM CPU is not maxed out! Please keep up your good technical explanations, I totally enjoyed it.
Hey Thomas! Thanks for the comment. I just released a video yesterday covering the update! I’m glad they were able to make it happen. Now we don’t have to do all the round a bout craziness just to sync things up!
Thanks! I’ve been reading through the manual and thought I’d come back to comment on the mic vs line in options. You can determine which you want in the settings under the audio tab of general settings.
Great video thx. I had sound issues at church yesterday. This video helped me resolve the issue by pointing out I had to change from mic to line in the software. Lifesaver. Thx
It's a real shame they didn't add the sidechain trigger feature on the Compressor and gate from the Davinci Resolve Fairlight mixer, then you could do some useful ducking of audio channels such as music or ambient/room mics with the compressor or gate when using the mic inputs. Could be really useful when live streaming from a venue or pubic space.
Re the issue with delay on audio... If you run your mix from a board into the camera first (stereo in) and then take the hdmi from the camera into the ATEM it should give you perfectly synced audio to video without needing to use a delay on the board.
Very true. I think I mentioned that briefly, especially in the part 2 video of "All things Audio" but I wanted to give an alternative for those people like me, who have a Blackmagic Original Pocket Cinema camera and the audio input just plain sucks. Thanks Bob!
@@RyanKnowsNothing hah! Maybe this answers my question above as to why people don't use the camera audio inputs. I have a BMPCC 6 and a Canon SL3, will experiment.
What I do to fix the audio delay is I use a Zoom H8 and connect the Lakato wireless stereo guitar system into it, then plug the Lakato receiver into camera 1. Turn off audio follows video, set the first camera to use the mic / line in input, turn off the audio on the ATEM for the other three cameras. I record acoustic piano recordings with generally one vocal (usually speaking) so I can place the Zoom six to eight feet from the piano, have the speaker stand in front of the zoom, and the recording is quite impressive. If I have the option, I can take a microphone and plug it directly into the zoom if that is an option (in this case, I will usually place the zoom inside the piano to reduce room noise). It is a bizarre oversight that they don't delay the audio and Im not sure this is firmware fixable, but just use the camera's audio input and problem is solved, no syncing necessary.
Hey Ryan, great video and thanks for the very informative deep dive into audio on the ATEM Mini Pro. We did a live stream today and I could not figure out how to prevent audio feedback due to the need to both stream vision from the ATEM to FB but at the same time, send the HDMI output to a big screen for the live audience and amplify audio for them to hear. I feel there is a simple solution but I'm still trying to figure it out. Hoping you can help!
I'm a little late to the show here. Great info!. I just bought one of these for my wife's youtube Channel. I have a Zoom Podtrack P8 for audio capture so I'll be running out of that into the ATEM. Does the ATEM store the most recent settings or will it need to be setup again each time? We are planning on recording straight to disk via the USB C and won't have a computer hooked up unless we are live streaming. At least that is the plan for now.
Thank you so much for making this video sir. I just got the ATEM Mini Pro and trying to make it work with a YAMAHA mixer since I need to plug in 12 wireless mics for an event. This has been so helpful 👍
@@RyanKnowsNothing yeah it’s a hackathon demo day here in Kuala Lumpur, the 10 top C-suites of a bank here will be judging the teams. It’ll be fun alright. Gotta make sure the setup is top notch on the day for the virtual event livestream 😀
I always wondered why the volume up / down buttons seem to be the wrong way around (for cultures who read left to right). Standard is down is to the left, up to the right. This is a standard on most equipment. Accordingly it's not as intuitive for what would be BMD's biggest consumer of their products. What do others think?
Regarding the movement of the knobs in the gui. It's based on real life. You don't push a rotary knob up and down you twist it to the left or the right. Conversely with a straight fader you don't move it left or right you would push it up or down.
That is very true! It seems like 99% of other audio GUIs or DAWs you move up and down to adjust the parameters. I am so used to that, that it’s always a bit odd when I encounter a GUI that operates differently. Maybe I’m just going crazy! Thanks for the comment and the insight!
@@RyanKnowsNothing I totally understand where you are coming from. I think it is the inconsistency between interfaces that causes the issue. I know in some other software you do push it up and down instead of left and right and in some you can do both. Still they say variety is the spice of life :)
What you use is a small cheap unbalanced behringer mixer that you feed your stuff in to. To that mixer you feed your stuff daws everything. Make sure you pan the left and right channel hard in the audiosettings of the atem mini
Probably any mixer with an unbalanced output would work. What brands that are good value for money is based on personal taste these days I guess. The problem is how do you monitor the audio using your studio monitors with any of the minis so I am having a hard time trying to understand what use there is for fairlight. Without good monitoring there is no way you can be sure it sounds good after changing settings in the fairlight software mixer. And no headphones wont do it if you want to be sure it works good with all the different stuff people watch with.
WOW! Great teaching, master Ryan! As an audio hobbyist, I knew how the EQ works, but had no idea how to set it up well. I've never had a compressor on a mixer before except for a single control. Never setup for broadcast before this year. Can't get the present/boss lady to sit still for a good long sound check to get this stuff right (by guessing, which I hate). IOU! Cheers, Jon
Thanks Jon! Yeah, those are the worst situations. Usually when I am mixing a broadcast I set the channel to that starting point and then I have the luxury of making subtle tweaks throughout because I am just concentrating on audio. If I was switching the show as well, I just would have time to do that. Glad you found it helpful!
I just recorded an interview with two people and each person had a lav. I put the mics on each camera and had them both on during recording. Will it now record separate tracks or keep them as a single mono track?
My audio sounds crappy low volume using mic1 set at line in. Is it a TRS, TRRS or some other input hardware? I am using an iPad line in with a TRRS to TRS adapter?
It’s a TRS adapter. Have you tried just using a TRS to TRS cable? I am not sure the iPad had TRRS. When I run audio out of my 2nd gen iPad Mini I use a TRS to dual RCA or dual TS 1/4”.
@@RyanKnowsNothing Geezuz how many more cables or adapters do I need to buy?!? 😜The ipad is TRRS and it works plugged into anything else with a TRRS to TRS adapter I have.... I am having so many issues with audio on this ATEM mini, I think I am gonna sell it or toss through a window
Much thanks for this great 2-part video, much much appreciated! Now: How do you suggest one go about monitoring, since you wisely recommend trusting one's ears? I ask because since there is no headphone/line out, I am listening to the audio sent out via HDMI to my DELL monitor (and then listening via the headphone jack on that). And what I am finding there is that I cannot trust the up-to-8-frame-delay feature: when things sound good on the monitor out (DELL monitor), they record with delay, i.e. the camera and lapel mic are out of synch by, say, 5 frames. So how can one trust what one hears, and where does one hear it? Also, the way it seems, the only way to check synch is to record to an external drive and open that file in VLC or another media player and see if audio and picture are in synch... this is very cumbersome. If audio monitoring could be trusted, it owuld be great... so is it? And where/how?
I use an audio extractor from Best Buy that spits out a line level signal. Then I plug it into the line level input of a cheap mixer I have. Another way I’ve done it is by using a home audio receiver with HDMI inputs. I know it’s not normal, but I had it in my studio.
Hi Ryan, Question I am curious to know what Mic your using for this video. This sounds great and I see that your speaking normally and it is picking up your voice perfectly clear. Please let me know and thank you in advance.
As an audio pro, please do another video about the fact that the audio inputs are unbalanced, and what happens to your audio if you plug a device with a balanced output (say, a mixer aux out) into the ATEM mini pro audio inputs directly.
The short answer is: Nothing strange happens. What happens when you connect a balanced peace of equipment to an unbalanced peace of equipment is that it simply turns out to an unbalanced connection. Both ends of the cable(connection) have to have the balancing/unbalancing transformer etc in place. As long as you use the right 2x xlr to 1x stereo mini jack cable it will be ok. That is when you put the stereo mini jack in a stereo mini jack input. In the xlr plugs of the cable only one of the signal pins is connected or is shorted with signal 2 so there simply is no balancing going on that has to be unbalanced. Balancing is a very ingenious yet simple system to prevent outside electrical interference that hits the cable, to cause disturbances in The Force. As long as the unbalanced connection has a short cable and not really next to or on other electrical equipment, it will be all be ok. I saw once a guy putting two 15 meter xlr cables and at the end he connected the xlr to mini-jack cable. He said he only uses a short xlr to mini-jack cable so the most of the cable is balanced. I really thought he was pulling my leg but he was dead serious. Oh my god. There are so many people who do not understand balancing and talk like they do, it is unbelievable. Especially on TH-cam :) Do not mix this balancing thought with "out of phase" connection. That is something completely different.
You mentioned listening to the audio.. but how are you listening. There isn’t a headphone jack on this thing to monitor the audio? Are monitoring the live feed? Through your program monitor?? Is there a jack that I missed somewhere?? Seems like a simple thing I can’t believe is not a part of a $600 piece of equipment.
I was monitoring through a tv with a headphone out. Yes, it’s unfortunate they didn’t include a headphone jack. I ended up buying an audio extractor for $45-50 from Best Buy.
I think you muddied up that whole delay thing? Delay comes from HDMI - so you have to take your sound from the Mic in - either directly or through a mixer with no delay. Is that the first principle?
Hey John! Sorry for the delayed response. Yes, the delay comes from the HDMI, so the audio is arriving at the program feed first. So ideally you want to delay the audio the same amount as the HDMI delay. At the time I filmed this there wasn’t a way to do that yet. Luckily that has changed. Thanks for the comment, John! Hope everything is working well for you!
Thank you for the insightful video. I am enjoying my ATEM Mini Pro and i am attempting to livestream musical performances and interviewing guests who call in from remote locations. The biggest hurdle i have is monitoring the sound of the livestream itself. I can get audio into the ATEM Mini via my submixer and i can see the audio meters in the ATEM are receiving signal, but how do i hear this signal? there is no headphone out on the Mini Pro so where and how do i listen to what it is sending to the internet? Essentially how does one monitor the audio from the ATEM? So far the only way could hear what my stream sounded like on TH-cam was to set up private livestream and look/listen to it on a TV in another room of my house. Any help on how you guys are monitoring the audio of your live feed as well as your in-studio monitoring would be awesome.
I haven't tried this yet, but you could get an HDMI splitter/audio extractor. Here's one I found on Amazon that could work: amzn.to/3ebHkb6 It has RCA outs, which I know isn't ideal, but you could bring it either back into the mixer and not send it to the master bus, or you can bring it into some other monitoring box. Or this one has a 3.5mm output: amzn.to/2XsunD2 I'm not sure if it has a headphone amp in it. Looks like a line out. But start there! Should work!
@@RyanKnowsNothing I appreciated the video. We have a Mini Pro set-up. We run our multi-view feed to an inexpensive monitor that has an audio out line connected to a pair of powered PC speakers. I have used headphones as well. It seems to work pretty well as a coarse audio monitor. Not studio quality, but simple and sufficient for our application.
Just to clarify, if I'm using the 3/4 outs on my Apollo x6 (or any interface for that matter) to go into the ATEM mics (lines) 1/2, will it also record a mic input on my cam (Lavaliers)? I'm thinking about recording it all to a dedicated SSD drive via the USB port. That way, I'm freeing up any types of processing for Pro Tools. I see you've labeled a stereo track "PT" in the mixer window. How are you feeding the mixer? I hope I'm making sense. lol Thanks!
Hi, Thanks it was helpful! My question is how can I insert my digital sound from my Midas air18 via USB cable into ATEM Mini pro. I Livestream now via OBS, but I want to stream via ATEM Mini Pro and avoid PC, but there are only analogue inputs. I have connected the computer (digital mixer connected to this PC via USB) to ATEM Mini Pro through HDMI and tried to forward sound, but didn't work. Only the sound of a video was perfectly there, but not the sound of the digital console 🙁 Do you have some idea, how can I solve this. Thx
Hello! Sorry for my english. Nice to find your TH-cam channel. Thanks for the video and congratulations. The 3 more interesting parts for me have been audio splitting, switch between mic and line inputs and audio delay. Most of the people is more from video and treat as deep as you the audio things for these units. I still didn't decide from mini or mini pro... What a doubt! I have some questions I would like to share with you and your audience. First: If we enter to any atem mini or mini pro from a mixer that has XLR outputs how should be bought or soldered the connectors? I think Atems mini mic inputs are TRRS in which contacts are from tip to sleeve inL is tip - inR is ring 1- ground is ring 2 - mono input is sleeve (remember that XLR1 is ground, 2 is signal, 3 is invert signal). if the atem mini input is balanced audio it'l be signal is tip, invert signal is ring and sleeve is ground... Second: I was wondering if it could be used atems mini as usb streaming, with OBS or any other stream app or directly to TH-cam or any other live video platform, I could use my digital mixer as an interface and get the audio inside de computer directly from there. Third and the most difficult one: I know it can be used atems mini by usb for online meetings or classes but what about using atem mini pro as a direct streamer to the internet router, be able to use it for those meetings with a external mixer? I would like for example to plug my ipad for the zoom class as HDMI input but also divide audio inputs and outputs to the mixer to make outside the box the multiplex connection with zoom class. How do you or any of your audience would do that? I guess I'd need a splitter from lightning to hdmi and other lightning and then an audio splitting from input and output and then plug the audio output of the ipad to a one mixer channel and to the ipad send all except that audio input from an auxiliary output from the mixer? Thanks in advace for your attention and your answers. Greetings!
Hi Juan! Thanks for checking out the video! That is one of the more interesting things I found was that you could actually switch between mic and line on the inputs! First Answer: Usually a TRRS is for a headphone plus microphone into a device that supports that. I would hazard a guess that these are Stereo TRS connections on the inside as it has no headphone functionality, but is a stereo (line) or balanced (mic) input. Alex Pettit has a cable he uses, but here is an XLR version I found that looks pretty good on Amazon: amzn.to/3cZY9FH Second Answer: On the original you have to go into something like OBS or a separate streaming box to get to TH-cam. With the Pro you can stream direct or through OBS or straight to TH-cam from the Ethernet jack. OBS is actually a great way to sync the audio from an external mixer with your stream because OBS has a delay function. I'm working on a video that will go more in depth with this. Third Answer: If I am understanding you correctly, you want to split the audio from you HDMI Zoom feed? There are ways to do that. I found a box that will extract the audio from you over an unbalanced signal that you could feed to your mixer, and it will split the HDMI so you could run to an external monitor and also the ATEM Mini: amzn.to/3ebHkb6. I think the ATEM Mini and the Pro would have to be plugged into your computer via USB to be used with Zoom, Skype, Teams and other meeting services. You might be able to do a round-a-bout setup in OBS, but I haven't delved that far into it. Hopefully that helped a little bit! Thanks for the questions and good luck!
Which in your opinion would produce better audio for a full band live music stream? 1. Audio from X32 into ATEM mini pro, 2. Using ATEM mini in OBS and selecting the custom audio option when choosing ATEM mini pro as a webcam, 3. Using the ATEM mini pro as an audio input device in OBS and 4. Not using ATEM mini pro for a full live band concert live stream for audio?
Definitely mix the band on the X32, bring it into the ATEM Mini, and in OBS delay the audio. I know there’s a way to do it, just can’t remember off the top of my head.
Hi I was watching this video because I wanted to get the ATEM mini extreme with 3 cameras for recording panel discussions. my problem is I have a 4 way senheiser ew100 g4 luv system and I was going to run them through the sound craft mtk 12 digital mixer so I could mix them externally from the ATEM. I have two questions. you mentioned that you use a digital mixer also but I could not see any option in the item software for selecting an external sound card so I could get decent audio into the ATEM is this possible as I don't want to rely on the mini jacks. What digital mixer do you use, how do you delay the signal how do you select the digital sound card in the item software? Thanks
I've got two XLR's coming out of a sound desk. How would I get these into the ATEM Mini Pro. Is it just a matter of getting a 1/8 inch to two XLR cable or would I get two single 1/8 inch to single XLR cables and put one lead into mic 1 and the other into mic 2 on the back of the ATEM?
Hey i have a question in regards to the audio coming no audio is play yet the levels are jumping up and down what can fix this issue its also a brand new headphone to 1/2 in cable
Thank you for this! We have our audio coming from the behringer x32. Headphone monitoring out of the mixer sounds PERFECT but upon hearing the audio of the saved video from the AMP the audio was pretty distorted (even though the levels showed pretty normal). After watching your video, I just realized I didn't switch the input from MIC to LINE, could that be what caused so much distortion? I realize lots of factors could be the issue but just curious if the MIC and LINE setting would make such a difference in general. Thank you for your time!
Hi! Thanks for the question and sorry about the late reply. I took the last month of the year off from TH-cam. I believe that is your issue. If it sounds good on the mixer, it should sound good on the broadcast. It was probably that line input option that was messing it up for you. It can definitely cause a LOT of distortion. Have you been able to try it with the inputs set to Line? Also, if you can, monitor your levels on the multi-view. In the ATEM Software Control, you can adjust the trim of the audio coming in by adjusting the knob at the top of the channel. Make sure you never hit the red.
Thanks Ryan I have a rodecaster outputting 1/4 inch to 3.5mm in the ATEM creating hissing and humming when there is silence via the xlr microphone I’ve try microphone and line settings on the ATEM Any clues or pointers to remove the hum hiss?
Absolutely. And that is definitely the easiest way to do it. But it still kind of renders those inputs a useless waste of space. I’m working on a video that goes over that and a couple other methods to get past the delay issue. Thanks for checking out the video!
Plug it into the camera if you don’t want to have to worry about the audio and video being out of sync. And yes the audio will come over HDMI. You just hit the on button on the input the camera is coming into.
Yes you can, but you may have a sync issue, so you’ll have to adjust the frame delay in the ATEM software. Or, if possible, plug the mixer into the camera’s audio input and then turn the audio on for that HDMI input.
As you've probably noticed there's no headphone jack on the Mini Pro (there is on the Extreme). I always plug my headphones into the monitor I use for multi-view output. It's not a great solution because if the quality of the circuitry of the screen is poor, then you'll be left a bit blind (or whatever the audio equivalent would be). An alternative would be to use a device that has HDMI feed through (In and Out) plus a headphone socket. An example would be an Atomos Ninja Blade
We done brother. I was not aware of the mic/line feature in the software.... I guess I missed it somehow...Thanks for that! Also is there any advantage to using a di box from my interface into the atem mini pro mic inputs or does the line level switch already solve that issue? Thanks in advance!
Hey Jim! The line level switch solves that issue. If you run it through a DI it will take it back down to mic level, which technically will work, but adding a DI adds another point of failure in the system. I'd say just run it straight from the interface into the ATEM.
I'm sorry if I missed it, but can you tell me: does each HDMI AUDIO source stay "switched on" if I switch from one cam to the next? I have 3 cams and 3 mics stretching longer than 30 meters, and I would just like to use the cam's audio inputs for all the mics instead of the line-ins in order to avoid possible signal noise w/ 30m 3.5mm cables. Thanks a lot!
Hey Jordan! Thanks for commenting. If you have the HDMI’s audio input set to “ON” it will keep the mic on the whole time regardless of switching cameras. If you have the AFV, or Audio Follows Video selected, it will turn off the mic when you cut away from that camera, and turn it on when you cut to it. Best practice in your case is to just turn them all “ON” and leave them. Hope that helps.
Is the audio/preamp that bad on the atem mini? Everytime the gate opens you can hear the noise in your video. This is also my experience although i use a mixer.
What about headphone monitoring? I van listen to my mixer but not sure if that’s true to what I hear coming out of program. External speaker monitor same thing. Is there a way to monitor sound? Thanks video was good 👍🏿💯✌🏿😎
I have had success a couple of different ways. The first is that I use a home theater receiver to route all my inputs to a video monitor from various sources. It gives me the headphone out on the receiver to monitor audio. The second is off of a secondary monitor with a headphone out. The last one is with an audio extractor that I bought at Best Buy, but with this it comes out line level so you have to run it into some sort of mixer to monitor from a headphone output. I would suggest continue doing what you are doing and then every so often just listen to the stream for a couple of seconds to make adjustments. When you monitor off of any of these sources, the audio is delayed and it usually throws me off a bit. Monitoring from your mixer is by far the best way to go because it will be in real time. Then it’s like just checking in every so often to make sure the mix on the stream is good. You can even have someone else do it for you.
Excellent video, thanks for the very informative overview of the sound capabilities. I have ordered, an ATEM mini, but may upgrade before delivery to the pro. I want to live stream a demonstrations from my Woodturning workshop and thought this would be a great device to use as a one man band. Would you recommend an external audio interface for a MacBook Pro or is the audio delay too insignificant to worry about. Also what mic would you recommend. Thanks again for the in depth video
I would recommend you go with a wireless lav mic as it sounds like you’ll be moving quite a bit with your demonstrations. This will allow you to also plug directly into your camera which negates the need for an audio interface and keeps the audio in sync with the video. Check out the Rode Wireless Go ($200) and Lav Mic Go ($100). Not very expensive and it sounds pretty good. That’s what I’ve been using in conjunction with a shotgun mic.
Man, I wish it could! I do a lot of multi-language production and that is a big thing! It only has one program output and along with it one stereo audio feed. Have you looked to see if OBS allows multiple audio streams?
Ha! No worries! I do that kind of thing all the time. I am working on a video that will go a little more in depth on that issue, so keep a look out! Thanks for the comments and subscribing!
I have a problem in starting up my software control on a free WiFi network on location where I have to capture video to my mixer What can I do to solve that because I won’t get access to the private network installed there . Thx
Dude this was an awesome tutorial! I'm a drummer offering online lessons and this could take my lessons to the next level! I'm a bit late to the game here but man, I'm using capture cards, dongles, adapters and I feel like I'm really stressing out my laptop. I need a way to switch between a TalkBack mic and the mics on my kit so the line inputs on the back would be ideal!
Thank you for the video, but I need a little more help. We have our mixer going into the mic 1 input, and every time someone is singing, the instruments (which are miced) goes low. How do I keep the music the same level as the singing?
check mixer output and attenuate vocals before it combines and sent to ATEM another way is to connect ATEM mic2 for vocal only and adjust levels in fairlight
If any of the mic inputs or HDMI inputs are set to “ON” it will feed the program audio output. So, you could have every single source on and it wouldn’t matter which camera you switched between, your audio would stay the same. It’s when you push the AFV or “Audio Follows Video” that it will cut the audio from a source. And unfortunately no. The audio coming in through the mic inputs won’t be in sync. I am working on a video that will go through how to identify the delay and a few ideas on how to fix it.
Excellent video! If I have my mic (SM7B) running through my Motu M4 audio interface (XLR), would you recommend I run from the Moto to the ATEM? That just feels wrong, but otherwise my ATEM can’t control my audio. Hm. Suggestions?
Short of using an external mixer, that would be the only way I can think of. Does the M4 have direct monitoring? If so, make sure you are using that and not running it through a DAW and then out. It’ll cause latency. No matter what I’d use an external preamp like the one on your M4. The preamps on the ATEM are not good at all.
Ryan! Very nice.. I know I'm late to the party here but will these settings STAY if the system is shut down?? Like if I did a rehearsal for a show the day before, will all those EQ and limiter etc. still be set as they were in our practice run on the next day when we do the real show?? Thanks I hope you or anyone with this knowledge can reply. Take care!
Sorry for the late response Dallas! I think it is now by default with a couple of firmware builds ago that it will save your settings. Experiment with it and make sure I'm not straight up crazy.
Theoretically it should be possible with that mono XLR Female to 3.5mm. The thing to look out for is that the SM7B is a fairly low gain mic, meaning you have to crank the preamp to get a good level, and that ends up cranking the noise floor as well. Look into getting a Cloudlifter CL-1. it boosts the signal before the preamp so you get a really clean, strong sound out of the preamp. Amazon has them for about $150: amzn.to/2XrpKKN
Hi Ryan, thank you for this amazing video. I have a. question. I teach dance classes via zoom with ATEM Pro Extreme. During classes. I play Spotify app on my laptop as background music as I am talking which I use a camera and a mic as one signal into the ATEM HDMI input. Is there a way to send the music signal into the ATEM so that I can record both signals into a SSD via USB-C? Thank you.
You should be able to run the music into one of the mic/line inputs on the ATEM. Just make sure in the software the audio inputs are set to line, which I believe I mention in the video. If you need to run the audio to the ATEM and one other place (playback speakers for you to hear) then just get a stereo splitter. You should be fine splitting the signal once. And just make sure it is a true stereo splitter and not splitting out the left and right channels.
We are struggling to connect our soundboard to the ATEM Mini. We are coming out of the soundboard Aux with an XLR. How do we go from the XLR to the 1/8 stereo?
Is it a mono or stereo aux? If it's stereo you can grab a dual XLR Female to 1/8" cable here: amzn.to/2ZXs8KU. If it's mono then you can grab a single XLR Female to 1/8" here: amzn.to/3gKXdY8. Just be sure to switch your input to line level. If for some reason you get a hum or a buzz on the line, as some people have reported, look into getting a DI box with a ground lift.
@@RyanKnowsNothing Things to consider. The signal coming from the Aux out is a Balanced signal. The signal coming in the Atem mini Pro is an unbalanced signal. So you need somthing like the Art Cleanbox pro 2. www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/CleanBoxPro--art-cleanboxpro-2-channel-balanced-unbalanced-level-converter
Hi Ryan, thank you. I was hoping you could help me with something: my intention is to broadcast a stereo recording of my music I play live via my mixer (the only reason for the atem is to switch cameras from one area of the studio or another (piano, guitar, etc.), but that's purely visual. For this purpose, would there be any advantage to go for the extreme iso rather than the pro iso?
WOW, Awesome Video Ryan@hi-tech on life, as I am a lifelong Musician getting into streaming (just learning about video). Trying to start with live audio first. I am looking into the Focusrite Clarrett Pre8 usb. When I get to my video options, is the ATEM Mini a Good fit with the Focusrite Clarrett Pre8 usb (utilizing the pres on the Clarrett, and maybe going line level to the ATEM)? Are the ATEM Mini and Focusrite compatible? Or separate systems? Thank you for your Time and Consideration.
Thanks Brian! I hear the Clarrett is pretty nice! I haven’t had a hands on with it yet, but I hope to in the future. I think the biggest thing is getting that clean signal into the ATEM. I’m not sure if it has a direct monitor function or not. If not you just have to mix things through the Focusrite control software or with a bit more latency, through a DAW.
I am having trouble where around 30 to 40 minutes the video and audio get out of sync. There is like glitch and it goes out of sync.
hi-tech on life how can I contact you?

Thanks Mat! Much appreciated!
Very nice explanation covering the ATEM Mini Pro, especially on the audio. Kudos for not having some annoying background music playing during the video.
Yeah, these long form extreme information videos just get annoying if there’s background music. Thanks Scott!
Hmm, I'm curious about the hack on multiviewer please... Please
Outstanding video, thanks Ryan! 👍 There are so few good audio tutorials I'm finding and this was one of the better ones on the ATEM mini.
Great video. If you are looking for the Mic/Line input change it is around 21 minutes. Learned a lot about all the audio settings I was unaware of.
I’m glad the video was helpful! Thanks for the comment!
That is true. Would it have taken up that much more space to throw a headphone amp in? It would be nice to have this on a future v2.
@@RyanKnowsNothing Alex Pettitt explained 2 work arounds. Basically, feeding a laptop to use that headphone out or feeding a monitor that has a headphone out.
Right. There’s definitely some ways that will work, albeit a little janky. The external monitor is probably the best way at the moment.
Thanks man!
@@RyanKnowsNothing Peace ;-)
Excellent Video!! You are right, nobody talks about mic/line in feature!!
Thanks , this video really help me with the audio side of the Atem
This was super helpful! I use this device to broadcast my dj gigs and the audio levels coming in from my dj mixer have been driving me crazy 🙉 Now I know why. Thank you!
You can also send your audio source into the camera so it will sync on the hdmi cable automatically.
Yes, I did fail to mention that small fact, but I have a video coming out Sunday that addresses the delay issue in it's entirety.
Thanks for watching!
Great video! I'm always looking to learn more about audio so found this super helpful! Keep up the great content :)
Thanks Alex! That means a lot coming from you! I’m learning a lot from you as well and hopefully will start doing some live streaming shortly.
@@RyanKnowsNothing I'm in the same boat, life long audio guy slowly learning video and now streaming. Thanks for the in depth audio info. Still waiting for mine to ship.
Awesome man! Yeah, I got lucky and had mine in pretty quick.
I had no ideal the eq existed. I am so glad to have watched this,,
Is it a good option not to connect your audio interface to to audio inputs of the Item, but instead select the audio interface as an audio source in OBS?
That could also work! It will probably give you more options than the ATEM.
The lack of XLR inputs on the device kills it for me. Or even quarter inch. Or adat. adat would be great, to go directly from my preamp and audio interface digitally.
Agreed. I guess they had to keep the price down somehow.
THANKS!
You’re welcome! Thanks for the kind words and I hope your stream goes well!
I have a Mini Pro ISO on the way. When they are available, I will be getting the Mini Extreme ISO version. Your video is very helpful!
Thanks! And good luck!
This was a huge help. Thanks! Good thing is now there is built in delay. Although the max of 8 frames doesn't quite work for me.
I was the same with signals from certain devices. My iPhone camera is SUPER delayed and barely makes it in at 8 frames. What delay are you looking at?
Really thorough and clear. Thanks for this great explanation on ATEM audio.
Man , huge . Let me fly you to Vegas to setup my studio ! Having so many sounds issues. Thank you thank you
Thanks so much!!! you just made my day! we just started a live stream for a car brand, providing them an alternative to the original product trainings we used to provide.
Yep! I go over that at about 21:00 in. It’s such a useful feature for sure! I’m glad they included the option to switch.
Great video thx. I had sound issues at church yesterday. This video helped me resolve the issue by pointing out I had to change from mic to line in the software. Lifesaver. Thx
That is awesome Ailen! Glad you were able to fix the problem and continue the broadcast!
This was such helpful content for an AMP user. You covered most of the bases on audio here! So practical!
Thanks Zach! More to come soon!
Thanks for the line switch hint. You made my day!!!
Thanks for putting the effort into this. What mic were you using to record your voice? Love how clean the output is!
Thanks for making this video in detail
Thank you so much for making this video sir. I just got the ATEM Mini Pro and trying to make it work with a YAMAHA mixer since I need to plug in 12 wireless mics for an event. This has been so helpful 👍

@@InbarajSuppiah Nice! Let me know how it goes. We have to do this quite a bit lately at my day job. LOTS of virtual meetings and associated insanity!
What a great video, helps A LOT in the beginning.
What you use is a small cheap unbalanced behringer mixer that you feed your stuff in to. To that mixer you feed your stuff daws everything. Make sure you pan the left and right channel hard in the audiosettings of the atem mini
You could also use a mid level Mackie that sounds a bit better that has an unbalanced RCA output.
I have an HDMI audio extractor that works pretty well. I also have a home receiver that I run the HDMI into and can monitor the audio.
Does setting the Line input setting stay after powering down the unit? It would be nice to not have to set this every time.
Yes, it has for me. Which is a good thing because I have to power mine off quite often. Thanks Jeremy!

Awesome Rory! Glad to hear.
would love to know how to record all the audio tracks seperately, either through computer or usbc.
Thanks
Ryan great video, very informative!
Working on it.
Especially on TH-cam :)
Do not mix this balancing thought with "out of phase" connection.
Like very much, can the audio delay be adjusted using the software
Thanks for the amazing video, I have been looking at getting the ATEM Mini Pro and this is the best video I have found :)
Thanks Jon! I still haven’t used it to it’s full potential. It’s quite a good piece of equipment to have in your arsenal.
Can the HDMI output of the Atem Mini pro only work with a monitor or can the output work with a normal TV?
I should have read down the comments before I added mine. I see this was already discussed.
Greetings, i have 4 lavaliere mics how do i assign each mic to its own track in the atem mini extreme pro iso?
First:
If we enter to any atem mini or mini pro from a mixer that has XLR outputs how should be bought or soldered the connectors? I think Atems mini mic inputs are TRRS in which contacts are from tip to sleeve inL is tip - inR is ring 1- ground is ring 2 - mono input is sleeve (remember that XLR1 is ground, 2 is signal, 3 is invert signal). if the atem mini input is balanced audio it'l be signal is tip, invert signal is ring and sleeve is ground...
Second:
I was wondering if it could be used atems mini as usb streaming, with OBS or any other stream app or directly to TH-cam or any other live video platform, I could use my digital mixer as an interface and get the audio inside de computer directly from there.
Third and the most difficult one:
I know it can be used atems mini by usb for online meetings or classes but what about using atem mini pro as a direct streamer to the internet router, be able to use it for those meetings with a external mixer?
Alex Pettit has a cable he uses, but here is an XLR version I found that looks pretty good on Amazon: amzn.to/3cZY9FH
Second Answer: On the original you have to go into something like OBS or a separate streaming box to get to TH-cam.
Thanks for this Frech air... the only decent video exclusively for Audio settings.
Hey i have a question in regards to the audio coming
no audio is play yet the levels are jumping up and down what can fix this issue its also a brand new headphone to 1/2 in cable
Make sure you never hit the red.
is there anyway to use a xlr to hdmi input with or without the camera. so a hdmi cable with a slit xlr coming from it with phantom power on it?
Thanks Ryan I have a rodecaster outputting 1/4 inch to 3.5mm in the ATEM creating hissing and humming when there is silence via the xlr microphone
I’ve try microphone and line settings on the ATEM
Any clues or pointers to remove the hum hiss?
You can get around the audio sync issue by feeding the audio through one or more cameras - perfect sync from the hdmi port :-)
Absolutely. And that is definitely the easiest way to do it. But it still kind of renders those inputs a useless waste of space. I’m working on a video that goes over that and a couple other methods to get past the delay issue. Thanks for checking out the video!
@@RyanKnowsNothing Fair enough - probably cheaper than adding a mixer with built-in output delay.. look forward to the next video!
I guess the argument could be made that you’d rather use a better preamp than what is built into the camera, which is definitely subjective.
Any example of a low cost mixer that has the delay out function?
Should I connect my RodePro to ATEM mini or to my 3.5mm canner input? Can hdmi from camera transmit sound to ATEM mini ?
Plug it into the camera if you don’t want to have to worry about the audio and video being out of sync. And yes the audio will come over HDMI. You just hit the on button on the input the camera is coming into.
@@RyanKnowsNothing thank you. I have audio mixer, so I can put cable into the mixture and then to my atem mini pro?
Yes you can, but you may have a sync issue, so you’ll have to adjust the frame delay in the ATEM software. Or, if possible, plug the mixer into the camera’s audio input and then turn the audio on for that HDMI input.
Great video. I just got the ATEM Mini Pro ISO. How do you monitor the sound?
@@RyanKnowsNothing Thanks for getting back to me!
Thank you for this video. I have a hum when using the line input? Any suggestions of what would cause that
Is the audio/preamp that bad on the atem mini? Everytime the gate opens you can hear the noise in your video. This is also my experience although i use a mixer.
Yeah, they’re not that great. I’d definitely use an external mixer when possible.
Hey, are you still available for audio consult? I need questions answered before buy an ATEM
@@RyanKnowsNothing Thanks for the advice. looking forward to more videos
Can the ATEM Mini Pro output multiple language channels? i.e. stream to multiple language tracks.
Man, I wish it could! I do a lot of multi-language production and that is a big thing! It only has one program output and along with it one stereo audio feed. Have you looked to see if OBS allows multiple audio streams?
Hi. Do you find there is much of a sync issue when you are using the mic inputs? Thanks.
Sorry, I pulled the trigger on the question before I'd watched all of the video!
Ha! No worries! I do that kind of thing all the time. I am working on a video that will go a little more in depth on that issue, so keep a look out! Thanks for the comments and subscribing!
Blackmagic update available today that "Adds adjustable audio delay on the analog inputs on ATEM Mini models."
Just saw that as well! Thanks for the update!
I have a problem in starting up my software control on a free WiFi network on location where I have to capture video to my mixer
What can I do to solve that because I won’t get access to the private network installed there .
Yeah man! Now that they have the delay thing figured out it’s a great option to be able to run a smooth stream! Good luck!
Great video, found it difficult to find this info in depth as you have presented.
Thanks Damon! Hope your ATEM Travels go well!
Thank you for the video, but I need a little more help. We have our mixer going into the mic 1 input, and every time someone is singing, the instruments (which are miced) goes low. How do I keep the music the same level as the singing?
check mixer output and attenuate vocals before it combines and sent to ATEM
another way is to connect ATEM mic2 for vocal only and adjust levels in fairlight
Any issues when you use mic inputs and switching among multiple cameras? Does the "mic in" audio synch with the video?
@@RyanKnowsNothing Thanks! It does have monitoring.
Ryan!
Hey everyone! Part 2 is now available where we take on the audio delay issue!
You can view it here: th-cam.com/video/gYTjv0-XOpI/w-d-xo.html
@@RyanKnowsNothing Thanks so much for your help!
@@RyanKnowsNothing I was going to ask the very same questions but you answered them all. Thanks!!
Ryan. Great Video Thank you!
