    Perhaps I missed it, but it would have been good to cover that the line input is unbalanced (Step down transformer is needed to avoid noise and headroom issues) and not +4dBu. So if you don’t use a pair of transformers, you need to keep the level down going in, then bring it up via the mixer. High pass is a good suggestion and I think you really should only use the limiter. Compression would be applied at the board.

    Hey Stephen! Thanks for this video. You've been a great resource in my streaming journey. I've learned a ton from you and appreciate it! So here is my current problem. I'm trying to monitor my audio from the headphone jack on my Feelworld F5 monitor and can barely hear anything. I have the monitor volume all the way up and have all of my audio setting as I think they should be and its so quiet still. Do I need to run a headphone amp between the monitor and the headphones? Or any other tips would be great. Thanks! Dustin

    Can you help me with this question. I use Atem mini pro extreme ISO and I have connected Camera1 (BMPCC6K) to HDMI1 input on Atem, Macbook pro to HDMI2 input and USBc also to macbook. My Microphone is connected to Camera1. I attend Zoom calls and I record all inputs however the sound of the guest in Zoom call is not getting recorded to ATEM. I connect headphone to macbook to hear the guest, but I can't get their audio in audio and video files for HDMI1 or HDMI2. Can you help me understand how can I get the audio of the guest in zoom or another conference app on to ATEM recording.

    Thanks again! So I have an Atem mini, mic in mic 1, and I'm live on TH-cam - How do I play audio from a video on my laptop without having to turn my mic and put it up against the laptop speaker?

    • @BallastMedia
      @BallastMedia  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      How are you streaming? Is the laptop with the video the same as the computer you stream from? There are several ways to accomplish this. 1. if you are streaming with a program like OBS, you can play that video right from OBS. 2. You can send an HDMI output from the computer with the video to your ATEM mini and it will show up as one of the inputs, audio and all (turn on the audio from that input).

    I have 2 microphones, say they're Shure SM7B's, I connect them to my Scarlett 2i2 audio interface, I then connect that interface to my computer via a USB-C to USB-A cord. usually, I record directly into audacity.
    I'm wanting to know how I can connect this set up to the ATEM mini for live streaming so that I can combine my high-quality audio to my high-quality video while LIVE!
    THANKS IN ADVANCE!

    • @BallastMedia
      @BallastMedia  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      To get audio through your Atem Mini, take the analog Left/Right output on the back of the 2i2 and connect it to one of the Mini's inputs using a cable like this (amzn.to/3sxayIv) You'll want to turn the "direct monitoring" switch on the front on. Also set the Mini's audio inputs to line. In this configuration the 2i2 is acting like a 2 channel preamp and mixer. If you are using software on a computer (like OBS) to live stream, then you could also just keep your current 2i2 setup and add an audio device to your scene in OBS and bring the audio in from the 2i2. Video from Atem, and audio from 2i2.

    Wait, just the cable? But typical mixer gives balanced mono while ATEM will want unbalanced stereo. I've read that without the conversion (with something like DI box) the resulting audio will not be good. I think I've heard the term "off phase" basically, one of the channels will have reversed phase...

    • @BallastMedia
      @BallastMedia  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, you need to make the conversion with your cable.

    • @JuriyBura
      @JuriyBura 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BallastMedia I did a research, cable is not enough, you need a DI box.

    • @BallastMedia
      @BallastMedia  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JuriyBura You can directly cable a balanced line to an unbalanced connection, if the wiring is done correctly, but it negates the advantage of the balanced line, basically you're just running an unbalanced cable. (Using a direct box would keep the "balanced" portion of the line in tact, yes.) Also, you can't connect a mono balanced line to a stereo unbalanced input - this is usually where most people go wrong and have issues.

    Great tutorial...
    We use a small Mackie creator mixer that has 4 separate headphones output jacks...
    Wondering about patching from my headphone output to the mic input of the atem switcher...
    This way it leaves my full size mixer line level outputs jacks available for the powered monitors and other works...
    What do you think?

    • @BallastMedia
      @BallastMedia  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Better not to use headphone output to drive line inputs. There is an impedance mismatch there that can cause distortion earlier then you'd normally have.
      If your mixer doesn't have enough line level outputs, just use a distributor, something like this can work: amzn.to/42Y6Smt

    Any suggestions on how to get a balanced XLR Aux out on my sound board to the unbalanced 1/8" stereo input on my ATEM mini pro switcher? Would changing the audio input to "LINE" fix the sound issues we are having with that? My understanding that because of phasing it is canceling some of my signal out and causing it to have terrible sound going direct from my board to the ATEM Mini. We've tried using a variety of direct box options, but not a lot of options going from balanced to unbalanced (although plenty of options the other direction) and I'm having issues with every one I try. HELP!

    • @BallastMedia
      @BallastMedia  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You need a cable like this that is wired to convert balanced to unbalanced: amzn.to/32WaE2l You really don't need a box in between. Yes, make sure you have set the audio settings in the Mini to set the Mic input to LINE level.

    The biggest problem I deal with (with the Minis) is noise and hum. Usually it’s alleviated using a stereo DI, yet today I did an install where the noise was still present; the mixer at the install is noisy, so that may be contributing despite successful installs with the Minis in the past. Switching the input to line level, I had no idea it was embedded in the software. Thank you for sharing!

    • @BallastMedia
      @BallastMedia  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      How is the mix sent to the Mini? Sounds like you need to work on the levels to balance out the difference. Broadcast is a whole different animal when it comes to gain structure, we're used to having widely different levels in the house (50-70db for speaking and 70-100db for music) and that just doesn't translate to video. You need to work on your mix going in to the Mini to balance that out some. Compression can help a lot.

  • @Jswalden86
    @Jswalden86 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Important to note, if you're running 1/4" out to the ATEM. (This doesn't apply if you use XLR outputs.)
    The suggested dual 1/4" to 1/8" cable for sending audio from board to ATEM assumes your board is outputting *unbalanced* audio, and so it's appropriate to hook up to it a cable that has only two strips of metal visible on the plug, the Tip and the Sleeve (TS). TS cables send two different signals along two different wires: a ground signal on one, and the audio signal on the other.
    But often sound board outputs are *balanced* audio (which is much more resistant to interference than unbalanced audio, hence works over longer distances). And balanced audio requires a balanced cable containing *three* wires, with plugs consisting of three strips of metal: the Tip, a Ring, and Sleeve (TRS). A mono balanced signal breaks down into three signals in a balanced cable: a ground signal, then two other signals that encode the audio signal but in a manner overall resistant to interference. (XLR outputs will similarly transmit a mono balanced signal through their plug's three pins.)
    If you try using the recommended unbalanced dual 1/4" to 1/8" cable when your board outputs balanced audio, you're gonna have a bad time. If the balanced audio is "impedance balanced" (Tip is signal, Ring and Sleeve are ground), I believe it'll still work (but you're vulnerable to interference). But if it's "symmetrically" or perhaps "electronically" balanced (Tip is half signal, Ring is *inverted* half signal, Sleeve is ground -- so the actual signal is Tip minus Ring), audio will either be very degraded or just won't work, I'm not entirely sure which.
    If your board's outputs are balanced, you need to include a balanced-unbalanced conversion in the pipeline. Running two balanced 1/4" TRS to XLR cables from board to an ART CLEANBoxPro Dual-Channel Level Converter, then running a (ideally short) TRS-TRS microphone cable from that into the ATEM, should do the trick (I believe with the input set to Mic in ATEM settings). This will give you a stereo audio input, left/right corresponding to the two board outputs. If you only have one board output, you can just run it to the ART box, then in ATEM settings split the mic input and pan the active half to center and turn the unused half to zero.

    Hi Stephen - Tom M. at Cherokee Park United Church in St. Paul (again).Thanks for all your information - I'll ask this Q as briefly as I can: If we're not going with the ATEM mini yet, but using a camcorder with the amzn.to/2XiOzHs you mentioned to me before, would we get in big trouble if we continued to use the USB mic we are using now (Snowball Blue facing a PA speaker) plugging its USB into the laptop along with the USB of the video adapter? Sync problems?
    The reason we wouldn't go with a direct from our PA to the camera input is that we're in the front of the church now (closed church due to pandemic). Too far to run the cable. Later we could if we move the camera to the back - but by then we should really consider the ATEM mini, even with one camera. Right now, I'd just like to get off of the webcam (Logitech) that we're using because the picture is such low quality.
    I guess I have to ask: can the software for the video interface *and* OSB be expected to run on my i5 8GB SSD Lenovo laptop? We are definitely seat-of-the pants now, but I've heard that the Presbytery will have some grant money for approved hardware for little churches to stay on line. I'd want to use any money wisely. Thanks again, you are really providing a service at a critical time! -

    Hi I really like your easy to understand tutorials. I used these settings yesterday at our church stream and everything went pretty well, except I now have a couple of questions I hope you will answer.
    First when I changed the mic 1 to line it took almost all my gain away. I had to go back and use a third setting our Atem Extreme has that is called mic or output in?? I also noticed that there is a screen that shows makeup gain. Is this what I should have used to make up the lost gain by using line setting?
    Second question I am wanting to use the lower thirds from Propresenter 7 but our church has an older computer that is using VGA to 3 projectors. Atem requires me to connect using HDMI which I don't have. Is there another way to connect this computer to the Atem? Thanks for all your work it is really helping us church volunteers!

      Yes, you can most likely figure out how to connect just about any mixer to the Mini. Kind of depends if you want an Aux mix for your video or the main mix, but you'll need a Dual 1/4" to Stereo 1/8" cable (some are linked above in the description of this video) and set the Mini to Line-Level.

    Great video! The most frustrating for livestreaming is the audio. We have a Y cable coming off the mixer, one side is connected to the mini, the other side is to plug in headphones to hear the mix prior to going through the mini. The mix sounds fine in the headphones but what gets livestreamed to FB is really quiet (even though the meters in the mini are hitting the yellow area) plus its really flat and "tinny* sounding. I'm realizing now the mini has an EQ lol. Is there anyway to turn off that eq?

    Hi there, not sure if this has been asked before, but is it possible to monitor the audio output with Atem Mini and OBS through headphones? Also, I'm setting up a livestream, with audio coming from a sound system which is for our mics etc. previously we've used a 1/4" cable into the laptop through an audio interface. However, I want to connect the sound system direct into the atem mini with a 3.5mm adaptor. Can you foresee any issues with this? Thanks

    • @BallastMedia
      @BallastMedia  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      In OBS you can set the audio to be "Monitor and Output" in the "Advanced Audio Properties" (right click on the audio mixer). Then you will be able to listen through your computer's audio, eg connect headphones to the computer. You should be able to connect a mixer directly to the Mini without any issues, just be sure to change the Mini's audio inputs to "Line"

    A cheap Behringer mixer with unbalanced output works and it is better to use the HDMI output cause it has the better quality so you need a capturecard too. And it works with the old Adobe Flash Media Live Encoder for te coding to the internet. And if you are a CamTwist user it works with that too so this is a very cool product.

    I need some help!! I am running an Allen and heath sq5 for our front of house at my church, usb 2.0 out of the console into a MacBook Pro running Logic Pro x. The Logic template is from bethel and uses a lot of waves plug ins. Then I am going 3.5mm out of the MacBook Pro into the mic 1 line of the atem mini. When we live stream the audio is behind the video.... I have no clue how to fix this as every video I see only deals with delaying the audio to match up with video. In my case I would need to delay the video to match it up. Any thoughts on how to fix this??

    • @BallastMedia
      @BallastMedia  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Are you going in to OBS? You can delay the video in OBS with a filter. But ultimately it would be good to get your audio IO speed a little faster. What are your buffers set to in Logic? That might be contributing to the amount of latency, just be careful because if you set the buffers too small Logic will start to glitch.

    • @coreybrown4620

      Ballast Media Ballast Media thanks for the tip with OBS! I’ll probably need to watch some videos on connecting the atem to that but I’ll definitely look at the video delay filter function. Also, my I/O buffer size is set to 128 and the process buffer range set to medium.

    Hi, thanks for the very helpful video. I currently have 4 mics going into a firewire interface, and within Ableton Live, I apply EQ and compression and other bits such as limiting and deessers. Would I be able to plug the headphone output of my interface straight into the mic input of the Atem? I'm assuming there will be an audio delay as it's running through my DAW first, is there any delay compensation you're aware of within the Atem software? Many Thanks

    • @BallastMedia

    • @BallastMedia
      @BallastMedia  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you have the capability to do it on the mixer, just do it there. Sometimes depending on the application the mixer needs a different EQ for the room, or doesn't have the ability to provide the stream with the EQ it needs.

      1. Yes, you connect your audio mixer to the audio inputs of the Mini.

    Great video ! But I am not an audio maestro :) So excuse me if I am asking meaningless questions. I have two wireless lavalier mics (1 Sennheisser ew100G3 and 1 Sony UTX-B03) and their original cables (1 xlr and 1 3.5mm outputs), so my question is do I have to choose "line" instead of "microphone" at the ATEM Mini setup software ? Thanks a lot

    • @BallastMedia
      @BallastMedia  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends what the output of the device is. If your signal is really low and you are on Line, switch to Mic. If you are on Mic and it's distorting easily, switch to Line.

    Thanks for your great videos! Question: Will this device, and following the instructions you mentioned in this video help with following LKFS (or LUFS) monitoring requirements? I'm mixing through an A&H board into a complete audio 6 and into OBS and out to CASTR (via your CASTR tutorial, thanks). The worship music (keys, ac. guit. 3 vocals) sounded great on youtube but on FB it sounds fine for about 7 seconds then you can hear their compression kick in and the instruments sound like toys. My research is saying that for facebook I should be at around -16 LKFS. Will this device and instructions help with this problem? Or do you have another video that addresses this?

    • @BallastMedia
      @BallastMedia  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You would still need to measure and adjust to hit those targets accurately, but yet, using a compressor is the way to hit the target and average you want.

    Not sure if this is the place to ask, but this tutorial is about audio. I am relatively new to the ATEM. I am using the 'Fade To Black' feature to fade in and out on live streams. The audio does not fade with the video. Is this a simple setting I am missing, or do I have to create a macro just to get the audio to fade in and out? I can't find this issue being addressed anywhere. If I follow the tutorial - the part about running the audio into the ATEM and bypassing the camera - will the audio then be controlled with the video when utilizing the FTB button?
