    The whole NFT circus from the start made me think of „The emperor‘s new clothes“, because it uses the same arguments to quite literally sell you nothing (well a link). So in regards to supporting (female) creators, I‘ll just stick to the more conventional methods … and thinking about it, a lot of the small arts and craft stores I love are run by women, they just might not make some top 100 list.

    👏👏👏 Brilliant piece, Alice. Crypto's progressive-washing is something we need to call out and reject en masse, it is a firmly right-wing consumerist dystopia.

    • @notsocommonplace
      @notsocommonplace ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd like to start a discussion about this point. From my limited understanding Crypto kind of couches itself as libertarian and anti authoritarian. There certainly may be lots of different ideological motivations for traders, some likely right wing, others left wing; but what makes you label it as a right-wing consumerist dystopia given it is potentially necessarily libertarian given the fact that it is a de-centralized and therefore de-nationalized currency. I think the obvious problem is that while it does open the economic field for those outside of the traditionally conceptualized bourgeois it perpetuates the marginalization of proletariat elements and minority groups as though libertarian it is inherently "hyper-capitalist". wud luv ur thoughts

    • @fluxophile
      @fluxophile ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@notsocommonplace It's not too complicated. Libertarianism originated in the left-wing for being anti-authoritarian, but in modern America has evolved into a more right-wing philosophy because it embraces capitalism and exempts power acquired through the "free market" as more legitimate.
      Crypto people aren't just upset that there's a boot on their neck. They want to become the ones who wear the boot.

    • @notsocommonplace
      @notsocommonplace ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@fluxophile I really appreciate your perspective and your thoughtful response. In all good faith, however, wouldn't it be more right to say that capitalism itself cannot be aligned with a hard and fast adherence to either the left or the right? Given that both extreme left and right elements have disdained capitalism and soft left as well as soft right elements have embraced it; it seems to me that the power of capitalism is its parasitic and insidious ability to colonize ideologies for its own capital gains. As Zizek illustrates, the same piece of music can be an anthem for entirely antithetical political philosophies. Ultimately, I agree with your point that the "crypto people" want to simply remove the boot from the traditional bourgeoise; so that they themselves may wear it; but in my summation this seems to be more for an individualistic, anti-authoritarian motive more than one that is explicitly politically right or left.

    You reminded me of one of my favorite feminist books, "Feminism for the 99%: A Manifesto". It describes advantaged people such as female celebrities really well as "equal opportunity domination" while ignoring poor and working-class women, radicalized and migrant women, queer, trans and disabled women and all including men who are exploited, dominated and oppressed by liberal capitalism.

    I saw a quote come up once on someone's channel that said you can't buy anything to fix a social justice issue. If you bring that mentality with you then you are somewhat protected from the gimmicks, scams and various x-washings. Was a really helpful way for me to identify the disconnect I was having with people buying a million little gadgets to try and be more environmentally friendly without thinking about more simple solutions which don't involve spending

    I'm going to be very honest: i work in the financial sphere, in a institutional bank, and i don't know a lot about crypto or NFT's; mostly because i actually didn't want to know anything about or be personally related. But the feeling that i have is that is very similar to the forex modus operandi: "Come and join us and you''ll be rich with no effort". So, i wasn't at all aware of the fact that celebrities are "recruiting" people, and using "feminism" as a instrument. I actually find it... appalling. It amazes me how people get away with this.

    Unfortunately despite necessary and modest beginnings, I can’t quite conceive of identity politics now, as anything but capitalist. Ultimately I think it is problematic to reduce politics down to individual characteristics when you have an unclear basis for doing so in the present context. For example racial inequality in America has historically racist roots, America still of course deals with discrimination and racism. But the biggest issues facing many black people in America today are systems which benefit from structural inequality that are capital, not race based. If you rage at a corporation that they are racist, they will bend over backwards to prove to you they are not, they will hire a black ceo, but what they will not do is stop polluting the local environment, exploiting people, exploiting people in low income countries,sucking up resource and market share, they will not back a rise in the minimum wage, pay their fare share of taxes, pay for better training and working conditions for the police with ptsd and a chip on their shoulder who police black communities etc. They will not act in anyway that would benefit the majority of black Americans

    • @venusindior2787
      @venusindior2787 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Agree! We can go so much harder with our shaming of corporations. Systematic injustice is going to take a lot longer to pull apart as it's rooted in greed. And a man will go to many lengths to shroud his greed. It's tied up in things like academic language, the threat of losing our own little luxuries and now, corporations with hired minorities.

    • @exaggeratedswaggerofablackteen
      @exaggeratedswaggerofablackteen 2 ปีที่แล้ว +40

      Except that class-related issues do intersect with "identity politics", given how minority groups are more likely to be exploited, and harder too.
      Ignoring it would just end-up helping the majority, as always.
      For exemple, fighting economical inequalities won't magically erase racism : fighting racism will.
      We could do both as the same time, you know.
      Opposing "identity politics" and class struggle is useless.

    • @rubyviolet8
      @rubyviolet8 2 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      @@exaggeratedswaggerofablackteen Yeah hard agree. I'm trans and like... kinda can't ignore "identity politics" because literally my identity and my gender inform how most people and entities interact with me. Trans people are definitely economically disadvantaged and face things like homelessness and job loss at an increased rate, but there's definitely a shitload of social scrutiny that affects us and is unrelated to economics. My very existence in public spaces and especially women's spaces is constantly interrogated. My womanhood is constantly interrogated. If we waved a magic wand and fixed all class issues there would still be a significant amount of transphobia in society that would make it hard for trans people to interact with the world and exist in public. All this to say- fighting for my rights and acceptance in society is not giving into capitalism or delaying the fight for class consciousness. The existence of rainbow capitalism doesn't mean that it's a bad thing to specifically try to lift trans or other marginalized people up in society. People joke about "more female CEOs 👋" all the time, but seriously as a trans person it is quite distressing to see that almost none of us have attained any positions of power in society whatsoever; politically, economically, or culturally. Easy to take that sort of thing for granted and not see the importance, if you already have representation in society on some level.

    • @pisceanbeauty2503
      @pisceanbeauty2503 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      To be honest, I feel like a lot of us are being influenced by right-wing recapture and redefining of terms like “identity politics” and “woke” resulting in many people turning away from the underlying crux of these concepts at a time when we should not be. The reality is that I as a black woman can’t ignore my identify even as someone with very strong critiques of capitalism because those forces meant to concentrate wealth will disproportionately impact me as American. Even if we make headway in addressing wealth and income inequality, not addressing how specific identities are uniquely impacted by policies will perpetuate existing disparities, even if some things get better for everyone.

      Obviously,.class politics in reality
      always intersect/ overlap + race/ethnicity. gender, religion..religious faction,,lgtbq, etc., people need to deal

    Capitalism is a special ideology in many aspects and what it does with identiy politics illustrates this very well. I want to introduce you to "Rage against the machine" a Cross-over band of the nineties, that really helped that music-genre to take off. They were highly-anticapilastic in their lyrics, even radical and militant to some extent, but still they became another piece of merchandise being chewed up by capitalism, in this case the music industry. Long before there was an attention-economy, click-bait or even an internet to speak of.
    The merchandise that came with them and is still known today is the Che Gueverra t-shirt. Capitalism did not oppose and suppress this anti-capitalistic artists, did not fight their message, but actually did nothing else then expand and profit from the increasing popularity. Even going so far to use capitalistic tools like promotion and marketing in general to further foster their impact and the reach of their message. If this meant to print the portrait of a radical, violent and militiant communist on a t-shirt to promote a band the openly opposes caiptalism, so be it, as long there is profit in it.
    This is described as the immunity of capitalism against criticism, as it is not inherently political by itself, it works with social-democratic minded people as well as it works with liberals or conservatives. Whatever promises to turn a profit is just as good as anything else from a capitalistic point of view. In the center of this is profit, *personal* profit to be precise.
    Which brings me to the difference of grass-roots or bottom-up against top-down or trickle-down. In the center of top-down is the individual, representing, climbing the ladder and then trying to change the system from the inside. In order to accomplish that, however, it is inevitable to adopt the behavior and perspective of those that are in the system, which is most of the time harmful and can erode even the best of intentions. Even if it does not erode those personal standards it still is not very helpful, you see, the system allows everyone to "win the lottery", to triumph in the system but not all at once. It remains a privilege of a few, a minority, to be the winners, to have power and money. This inequality is necessary, because if all were "winning the lottery" there would be no bllionaires or millionaires, just a bunch of ordinary people that are a bit better off then they are now.
    Grass-roots movements are different. Personal profit is not at the center for most participants. It is about a systemic change from the outside, most often the personal advantages remain hazy at best to the individual. Still there is this interest to remove certain inequalities and injustices for each and everyone that suffers from them. That is the actual way of doing things as a human being, cooperating and trying to achive something as group, as a society. Capitalism threatens this inherently human tendency for cooperation by luring the individual with personal profit, wealth and power.
    So you see, capitalism adopting and monetizing "movements" of all types, sorts, colours, genders and motivations is its core mechanic, it is the heart of capitalism as a threat to society and the planet.

    Is not just that poor people don’t know how to handle volatility of crypto. The big investors are in similar margin of risk. The difference is that Katie can afford to lose the next crypto crisis and regular people can’t .

    Great take on it. Most people make up the middle of a distribution, by definition most people are not outliers. As such, members of a group are better represented by broader trends of the group, not a focus on outliers. This is even more relevant when comparing inter-group distributions, but even in-group outliers are used to exemplify things that do not really apply to the majority. It's a failure to observe that at the most zoomed out (like a basic [mis]representation of the gender pay gap), a difference can have many explanatory factors, and that zoomed in to focus on outliers does not explain the behaviour of, or trends affecting, the group either. An ability to distract from broader trends by focusing on outliers is also a reason for tokenism, or measures like the pinkwashing, etc. that Alice referred to. In both cases, it is misdirection to support an agenda, and does not aid the group that they claim to support.
    Alice's advice to focus on education is spot on. Education is a tide that raises all ships. The other main one is the eradication of poverty, which helps the most disadvantaged and does so without identity politics creating unnecessary division. These are measures that disproportionately assist those most disadvantaged, but they do not mobilise the most people under a banner, attract the most money and attention, etc.

    Indra Nooyi has achieved professional success as CEO of PepsiCo but there is a distinct Girlboss attitude that people have pointed out.
    As a Cis Savarna (Dominant Caste) Indian, it’s hard to reconcile being a POC (which is more applicable for people without Caste Privilege) and a relatively privileged person with Social Capital that keeps us afloat.

      The fact that a financial instrument is what it took for some people to finally vocalize their support for ostensibly progressive causes, is indicative of their true motives and indifference to the issues.

    The popularity of identity politics especially in co opted advertising spaces is completely related to its flexibility within capitalism. It’s capitalisms new favorite tool for creating superficial change without risking any deeper structural change.
