Ally is cool for playing on the couch at home. If I were travelling though, I simply could not bring it. I'm sure I could scrounge for a wall plug while on vacation, but ultimately I don't want to have a wall plug on my mind all the time. The Switch or Deck would be my choice, especially if I don't want to carry a battery pack with me everywhere i go.
I don't think the SD is going to fare any better than the Ally when it comes to battery life. Switch, sure, it's good for that but the SD isn't going to last all day playing AAA games.
I suggest checking out the Steam Deck case From Spigen its a hard case that fits the ally and has enough space for a power bank cables and a dock extra controller doesn,t fit
Thanks for your content… it helped me make a choice between the Ally and Deck and I chose the Ally. 3 weeks in and I haven’t had any issues with the SD card thank God. I have had a few bugs but nothing serious and it was easy to fix those l. I really do enjoy this more than my steam deck. I wish armory crate was better though.
🤦🤦🤦 you can get 50% more time out of the deck if you drop the TDP. 15w on the deck is pretty pointless 12W runs about the same and will save wattage. However the other day at 8W TDP I got over an hour playing Proteus then another 2 hours playing Reign. I still had 2.5 hours battery life on the indicator. The Ally just won't do that, the S/W does'nt let you🤷. On plane that is absolute gold. Just now on 50% battery remaining i got 2.5 hrs out of Selaco. I don't think the higher tier Ally is a good portable handheld. I suspect the APU in the lower end model will be more suited to the battery it comes with.
As far as that dock multiplayer experience you mentioned that was a concern you could’ve downloaded or emulate a couple switch and gamecube roms on your steam deck and dock it up to the tv and everyone can use different controllers you don’t necessarily need the switch, yeah you can do it on the switch but if you don’t want to take a bunch a handhelds with you on the go that would’ve just been a convenient option put all the roms on your steam deck or rog ally
Have you tried AutoTDP on the Ally? Phawx did a video on it and the few games he tried got him really good total system power numbers with AutoTDP targeting 60fps, compared to a standard 60 fps cap.
Thanks👍 I will go all-in with the Ally to my 1 month vacation. My steam deck would probably be the safe choice. But I think I would be missing the allys performance the whole time. Hopefully it will not let me down 😅
Thanks for this! You know you could put Windows on The Steam Deck too if you like.

Honestly the switch is better for travel. On a full plane you dont need a lot of arm space compared to the deck and even the ally.
