Check out my reaction to Bojack Horseman: • DOCTOR REACTS TO BOJAC...
    It's a Sin reviews: • DOCTOR REACTS TO IT'S ...
This Doctor REACTS video is looking at two more episodes of Stranger Things. I was FASCINATED by the parallels between what was happening to Eleven and how we approach the treatment of mental illness, and there were some really interesting topics explored including synaptic plasticity, strokes, defense mechanisms of suppresson and repression, operant conditioning and much much more.
Let me know what you think!

It would be difficult to pin down to just a few scenes, as it runs through the whole season, but Max’s storyline in season 4 of Stranger Things is a brilliant representation of someone dealing with survivor’s guilt, trauma, depression, and suicidal ideation. There’s obviously a fantastical element to it, but it’s just so well done.

You should do this for Will (through the seasons)! He's definitely undergone a lot of trauma, plus being queer at a time when misinformation was even more widespread than it is now (aids, Reagan, etc..).. It'd be interesting to have your take!

      - I didn't know they made Will gay. I liked that by setting it in the 80s that they would avoid the need to do the usual box checking but i guess you can't get to a 4th season without it. Still i havent seen a scene where they for sure say hes gay yet but i've got a couple more episodes in the last season to get through.

I think it's kinda rude that my brain has decided that I can handle remembering my repressed memories now. Like we couldn't have a meeting? State our case, discuss pros and cons? Make a mutual decision? Sure it's nice to not have so many blank spots in my memories, but those blank spots were there for a reason and I honestly don't know if I'm happy or sad that I'm remembering

Moon Knight Episode 5 'Asylum' is also a very interesting episode you could analyse! Moon Knight/ Mr. Knight - Marc, Steven and Jake (though they don't really know about Jake yet) - are a DID System and though in my (a singlet's) and the opinion of a lot of Systems who have watched the show the DID aspect is not portrayed accurately (for example, it's not possible for alters to communicate with each other through mirrors), episode 5 is really getting into the trauma and past of the System (ignoring that they use wrong terms like 'I'm just something you made up', 'that's the whole point of you', 'I always thought I was the original' and so on, but in general I'd love to see your analysis and opinion on it!
One thing about the show that makes me have a little more hope, is that the actor of Marc, Steven and Jake at least used the right terminology in the 'Making Of' episode (he was the only one, everyone else used terms like 'personality') and took the DID part actually seriously.

Re: the rainbow on the walls, I can't say I can cite specific examples, but I do have memories of being a kid in the 80s and there being a lot of that type of design around. Rainbows were big for kids then, at least in the US-- it was on clothes, school supplies, a lot of toys, and I remember similar patterns being painted like that inside schools. Maybe they had a different reason for it here, but to me it reminded me a lot of the style in the 80s, anyway.
If you're up for another sci-fi/supernatural show, it'd be really interesting to get your take on Doom Patrol. It deals very heavily with trauma and the process of recovering from it, as well as things like disability. All of the main characters deal with different types of emotional and psychological trauma that manifest in different ways for each of them.
Edit: It also deals with queer characters and experiences. :)

My dad tried the "sink or swim" technique on me to teach me how to literally sink or swim. Well I sunk, and it was a miracle he was able to fish me out of the lake He'd also spray cold water in me and my brother's face as a punishment. To this day as a 32 year old man, I cannot get in the shower without my pulse racing. My brother loves to swim and go in the ocean or a lake. Even typing about it has my hands shaking. I don't understand how we had two polar opposite reactions to the same thing, but we did.

My experience with this is similar to your brother's. I wonder why there can be that massively different of a reaction to something like this. My parents taught me how to hold my breath and dive by basically almost drowning me over and over again, putting my head under water until I started struggling, letting me get back up again so that I could barely catch half a breath, then putting me under water again, repeating until I almost passed out. And for some reason, I absolutely loved that?! And nowadays I absolutely love diving!

In horses, you inject intravenous drugs into the jugular vein. Due to the nature of owning horses and the culture of equine medicine, there are lots of people doing IV injections that are not properly trained to do so. You can imagine the devastating consequences of injecting into the carotid artery by accident (which runs right beneath the jugular vein as you get closer to their head). Even has happened to someone I know.

Even if you have seizures EEGs aren't very helpful unless you have a seizure during one. And if your seizures are non epileptic then they're not very helpful as it rules out epilepsy, sure, but in my experience that just leads to neurologists not really caring and discharging you back to your GP without any help.

    • @davidwilds8647
      @davidwilds8647 2 ปีที่แล้ว

They do. Covid vaccines are stored in that exact manner. Some laboratory reagents, as well. On the flip side, blood culture bottles, used to test for blood infections, have the same top and fill with blood the same way. Then if they turn up positive the lab tech uses a sort of needle that extracts through the rubber top to drop a single drop for the slide and one or two drops on each plate used to grow whatever bug the patient has so that it can be identified.

Hey Dr Elliot, I like your reactions :)
If you like BoJack for its themes of intergenerational trauma and abuse and how it affects adults, you should watch Moral Orel. Its basically the same as Bojack, but its from the perspective of children living in Christian fundamentalist households. It has other themes, like mental illness, neglect, abortion, zealotry, abortion, age regression, dementia and other heavy topics
Some episodes that are good for analysis are:
"Nature, part 1 & 2" These episodes have the dad (Clay) taking his kid (Orel) hunting and it turns very sour and dark. Lots of projection and trauma dumping on the dads part.
"Passing" Shows the dads upbringing and sheds light on his childhood trauma
"Sacrifice" Clay gets drunk at a bar and exhibits the behaviour he learnt as a child
"Numb" Shows what Bloberta was doing at home during her husband/sons hunting trip. (Self harm)
And my personal favourite (Because i relate to it the most out of every episode) "Dumb"; Where the child (Joe) of a dementia ridden old man is being neglected. This episode has themes of absent and neglectful parents, infantilization and the fear of growing up to be like your parents.
Hope you check it out :)

Also! There's a scene in season 1, episode 6, -5:23 (it counts down the minutes left on Netflix, not how many minutes have passed like youtube) anyway, the scene depicts Eleven being "shocked" (emotionally, not literally) out of her trance by seeing the demigorgon, and it cuts to what I can only guess is an EEG reading, but with only one wave with deep, long peaks and valleys in the reading, after she's screaming and very present mentally. Would you say there's any significance to that? Like.. what the hell were they measuring here? I know the duffer bros said everything you see is significant, and I'm reading way too much into everything because holy shit I MUST KNOW if theres clues eddie will be back (I stg, never got attached to a character so fast 😅.. he reminds me of me and my friends growing up. Can you say trauma bonding over shitty family and abuse? Lol.. shrugs.. it's how we coped and got each other through but we were often seen the way eddie is)
But also, I've seen that a lot of strictly "scientific" scenes they've screwed up, for instance, they put multiple electrodes on eleven but only read one wavelength, or the wireless electrode things... way off base.
Do you think it means something, or is it another issue of "bad sciencing" in Hollywood?

So I have a very cheesy stroke joke. My friend had an issue a while ago (herniated disk or something. It caused his arm to hurt or go numb.) He thought he was having a heart attack and goes to ER. (Like me he has a lot of anxiety issues so the panic attack along with the arm enforced the idea in his head that he was having a heart attack.) They ruled that out of course, and for a while they were floating the idea he may have had a stroke (which he was young so would've been unusual. ) I was with him in the hospital and he was asking the doctor what would've caused the stroke. I said, "the coxswain!". I tell you NO ONE LAUGHED. Nobody gets me.
