    congratulations on finding SAHB. I used to go and see them live in the 1970's in Plymouth UK. one of best live bands to see - so entertaining. You will find that most of the tracks will make you laugh like you just did, even though the subject matter is often very dark , the band always sparkled with humour. They used a unique mix of mime and ballet and even invented a cartoon character, Vambo . this was accompanied by original lyrics and skilled musicianship. AH is Scottish from Glasgow and he had a very strong regional accent, which gives his voice the character you liked along with the raspiness. They are hard to categarise because they were so unique- much darker than most glam rock but with the theatricality of that , they were punky before punk rock came along. checkout some of the videos online to get the full effect. i would suggest reacting to framed , gambling bar room blues and Delilah. When you have fallen in love with them listen to anthem. This is a song about a man being tried for murder who expects to be executed. it is accompanied by pipes and drums and an angelic voice along wth alex's rasp- spine tingling. Alex sadly died aged 47 and there is a montage of images of his life set to Anthem - so moving the man performed his own lament....."and though its true i'm worried now, i won't be worried long ." the whole band were excellent. Its very entertaining watching random strangers falling for music you have known your whole life..

    Alex Harvey spent the '50's and '60's getting ready for the '70's and when he got there they weren't ready for him and today, they still aren't ready for him.....proving true art is timeless or ahead of its time

    Great reaction to a great song. I can't listen to Queens of the Stone Age's "No One Knows" without being reminded of this. I was lucky to see SAHB live and they remain the most exciting live band I ever saw - Alex really knew how to drive an audience.

      This just appeared among the suggestions, and I had no choice but to be distracted. Here's one to at least bookmark and ask around about. The ultimate in sentimental sensitive love songs with all the words you wished you'd thought to say. It's called *Annie's Song* (I think Annie was his wife) by *John Denver* . th-cam.com/video/ztFLBxw8HWQ/w-d-xo.html
      (In more cynical terms, it's one of those songs that work very well when you need to be forgiven for something again.)

    • @sicko_the_ew
      @sicko_the_ew 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Something slightly weird does it better than sentimental. In that case, you'd be better off with *Surgical Focus - acoustic version" th-cam.com/video/uQXhs6ebH8Q/w-d-xo.html

      Troubadour song with two ouds. ('OOds") *A Chanter M'er* .th-cam.com/video/E3di_FWO8MU/w-d-xo.html

    A crackin' rocking bluesy number, and a real toe-tapper. It's all good, rhythm section, great geet solo, but I partic love the harmonica. And of course AH bashing out the vocal in his inimitable style, good stuff.

    Not so far from early AC/DC with Bon Scott as much for the sticky bluesy hard rock as for the spicy lyrics ! Hey!... and Alex Harvey and Bon Scott shared not only the fact of being Scottish but also their taste for black and white striped Sweatshirts !!!

    May I suggest a double reaction: Next by SAHB and the original "Au Suivant" by Jacques Brel. Live versions of both. About a mobile brothel brought in in for the moral of frontline Belgian troops in god knows what war.

  • @pete975

    Great song and a band I'm very familiar with. I'm too young to have seen band with Alex.
    Songs i like Anthem and The Hammer Song, and my favourite cover is Next

  • @kenl2091
    @kenl2091 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Hmm...SAHB as glam rock? I had never considered that before - sure it was that time in the seventies and the band (Zal Cleminson in particular, obvs) did dress up a bit but I wouldn't have lumped SAHB in with the T Rex, Sweet, Slade, Gary Glitter of glam fame. SAHB were quite unique and Alex a one-off. This song isn't their best but Next (the track) is quite superb and the OGWT version (findable on TH-cam) memorable in its own right. I second the recommendation for a listen to Jacques Brel's original (Au Suivant) though if you start listening to his stuff, you will be captured for days.

    Nice. I've dug Alex Harvey for like ever. I was just thinking you should check out the amazing Norwegian band Major Parkinson. Don't worry, all the lyrics, and boy what great lyrics, are in English. The song Heart Machine is a favorite of mine, but all their stuff is good. Serious fun.

    Try out the New York Dolls "Personality Crises".
    Look into "Budgie", a three-piece band out of Wales, when the cotton-candy "rockers" were listening to Rush and Triumph (three-piece bands of lesser imagination and quality).
    If you enjoyed "Swampsnake", you'll like "Bathroom Wall" from Faster Pussycat.
    "3744 James Road" from Groundhogs.
    "Car Crash" from Idles. I could go on until His 2nd coming, but won't. Peace, God bless!
