You make my day everyday!! I've been through an awful lot the past 2 years and every day watching you and learning is totally my therapy!!! I'm actually healing enough to start living again. You did that my friend thank you for all you do!!!
Those are great Ellen, what a fun easy way to make leaves! Showing my age here, I sponge painted my kitchen and my son's baby room back when it was the thing to do. I do love the texture and the way the colors blend!
Thank you, Ellen! Thought of trees today. Love Autumn...love the sponge technique. Amazing! Your tutorial really puts a watercolor painter in the mood. I'd even add gold flicks. 😘💖🤎✨️
These are so fabulous! I have used the sea sponge to make leaves before but not in this wet in wet technique. And not to do most of a painting. I really love how you created these primarily with the sponge. Thanks for a great video!
I do have a sea sponge that has been in retirement for quite some time, not sure why? Thanks Ellen for your real time sea sponge tutorial. I will get mine out of its corner and start using it again. What lovely little 🖼 you created with the sea sponge.
Loved watching your informative video on how to use the sea sponge. I am looking forward to using the sea sponge for creating sky with clouds and trees, flowers. Thank you for making this wonderful tutorial.
I used to use a sea sponge in my card making days. Hadn't thought of using it with watercolor. I'm off to look for my sponges to make some autumn trees!! Yea me! Yea you! Yea sea sponges!!
Thank you Ellen those 2 paintings were so cool and easy to follow. Today my varies sizes and textured natural sea sponges arrived by post. I wanted to see what can be achieved by using them and was pleasantly impressed at how you did 2 different scenes in such a short time! Thank you again and it has inspired me to go for it! Take care 🙌
Boy you had me fooled!!!! "I had decided that you Just-Didn’t- Like-the-Color-Green.!!!!Boy, you had me fooled. After watching you paint this lovely landscape and it’s many shades of green, you made me question how I saw things. You did a wonderful job with your sea sponge even though you really do a great job with your blues and purples. I hope you don’t take this wrong because anything you. P ,
Thank you Ellen. I love this .. I’m a beginner & I struggle with trees / clouds etc. this looks so much fun. I’m definitely going to give it a try. So beautiful. xx
Next day i tried the sponge tap method on cheap practice paper. I use tray paints so I didn’t have saturated paint as the tube paint. First i tried the dry leftovers on my pallet I found the best part of my sponge. The paint was Still too weak. Then i tried tapping my clean wet sponge right on the green colors in my paint tray. It worked great. Rinse sponge. Repeat with the yellow color range. Rinse then the red and orange area. Rinse and again with brown. Much better for the paint tray medium. I’ll try the exercise with my new technique.
I love those sponges -- so many textures depending on how you hold it or even scrunch it up. Love the autumn colors and undertree scattering of leaves! So lovely! 🥰
❤This was terrific, Ellen! I love all your techniques , watching you paint and your finished works!...hoping someday to be able to actually paint something decent! Am so happy I found you!😊
Ellen, would you do a tutorial on using black watercolor paper and also using watercolor canvas? Your videos are so inspiring and helpful. Thank you for doing them!
Thank you so much for two lovely paintings. I'm so happy I have some sponges that I really haven't used in a long time. I am going to use to try your techniques.
This was really informative. I’m new to watercolor. What takes me long is fixing up all the colors to figure out what shades I will need. Thank you for this video. 🌞🌞🌞
They are so pretty Ellen. I love using sponges in watercolour and acrylic painting, get great results. Your videos are always entertaining (and informative lol), thank you 😊
Thank you Ellen for a most inspiring video ,I do so love trees in every season and I will be trying the sea sponge technique. You are so inspirational xxx
Hi Ellen, wow, just beautiful - great technique, you certainly can't get easier or faster than that! Such neat little tips and tricks, very effective - thanks so much for showing us, amazing how easy that goes lol 👍🏻👍🏻💕
I really enjoy your videos. Thank you so much for your time. (I've used the sponge before but it was many years ago. I am looking forward to trying it with watercolor.)
2 in 1 is great! I just finished your landscape with the cottage, & the chicken & apples; & shall do them again. I also enjoyed your simple abstracts. Being a newbie to watercolor I don't mind doing some twice. (I just thought of your birch trees--zowie.) As for the sponge, who knew? Do you have one of goldfish with sand, a little castle or whatever or perhaps angel fish? My daughter surprised me with a couple of sketchbooks. Although I'm very happy using the pads, I think of sketchbooks for the more "advanced". Yes, I'm a little intimidated. Thanks for all the ideas, & techniques.
Great tutorial Ellen, yes I occasionally use a natural sponge, but now I see more applications. Might even try a painting with only natural applicators, sponge, lichen, twig, feather, sand with the grandkids, how fun! My off subject question though, what would you suggest for a fixative for watercolor postcards to actually survive being mailed? Or best to put in an envelope instead? Thanks
I've been binge watching your videos!!! So relaxing and enjoyable. I lost my brushes when I moved, so I'm waiting on Amazon to deliver. Can't wait to try your techniques. I have sponges!!!
I have trouble controlling the tap tap of the sponge. Maybe mine is too flat. Then i look at your painting and it looks fantastic. . I know. Skill and practice. Ill try it again. Sometimes (usually) it takes me a few tries. Practice. Thanks for the coaching.
You make it all seem so simple !! Which Holbein water color set do you recommend I buy . I would like to have all the colors you use on your tutorials .
you dont' need a whole set start with a few colors, cad yellow deep, cobalt blue and or peacock blue, quinchrdone magenta- and a Paynes gray these can make many colors - but add a few fun ones in- like Opera, and Prussian blue!
Ellen this was so fun to watch! I’m going for a sea sponge today! 😃 I really love your tutorials...they give me such inspiration. You are not only a gifted artist but an inspiring teacher as well! 🙏💜
Excuse the error…..I have a bag finger…..Anyway, everything you have painted no matter the color is always beautiful. Keep it up girl. Now I am through for now. D
I love your ideas and effects but I need to find something that is similar but synthetic as sea sponges are animals and the divers put their lives at risk every time they harvest them Can you recommend anything similar please ?
@@ellencrimitrent I’m thinking she’s asking for a synthetic version. And I believe the answer is no. Other then the sponges we use for household cleaning. (Which has its place in painting, but I’ve only use sea sponges). But I’m not sure of her concern for divers. Here in FL is a town call Tarpon Springs which is known for its sea sponge trade - and thereby draws many tourists - the economy of the town is based on both. Look it up! I live pretty far from tarpon springs so I haven’t been, but I bet you’d enjoy visiting there during their sponge/seafood festivals, or enjoy some on site plein air painting - which is what I’d do if I can ever get over that way!!!

so glad your healing and I am glad I could play a little part of it :)
That’s so nice,I hope your feeling better xx
I’ve learned more from you than any art teacher I’ve had. You’re fantastic!
I love this. I had just used a sponge as I was tired of painting leaves on an acrylic painting then saw this for what? WATERCOLOR. LOVE IT.
liking the naturalness of the sponge AND the ease

Enjoyed this - loved how you used your sponge in such a effortless way to create an entire scene - magic!
