My first winter woods I did, we tore some strips of paper and taped them in place at the top, made them have different lengths and different widths. I think that was in 4th grade. Some of our paintings were sent a district art show, and awards were given per grade level.
It's still a nice way of creating birch trees in a forest in winter or spring or inbetween. After removing the strips of paper, the dark stripes on the tree get added next. I'd then add some small bits of grass peaking through the snow in the lower half, to make it look like spring is awakening. I tried to make a spot behind the trees look like the sun was trying to peak through. That can be done when the background is being done with the strips of paper down.
Just wanted to share this fun different way of making them.
I love the different colored trees here and the card trick.

I have just found you !! In my earlier years I painted acrylic, oil, sketched pencil, charcoal. My creative spirit is returning. Thank you for sharing this paint technique. I am ready to step out and wet some paper and you have provided the encouragement.

i love it just the way it is - the shadows make it! Can imagine a huge painting on a white wall. I have thousands of trees around me and love them all here in Washington. lots of deer hiding in them. When they suddenly appear it's always a surprise so I can look at this painting and imagine.

Great video. I’ve always enjoyed painting trees and I paint a lot of them. Are you familiar with Wolf Kahn and his neon trees? I’ll use your techniques tonight and see what’s what. I like the flecks on the bark, background with the Paynes Gray and shadows. Not overworked. Thanks Ellen.

I really love your lessons and I have learned a lot from you. But with this trees something is puzzling me: The light is coming from the right side - the trees are darker on the left side. The shadows should go from right to left, not from the darker side to the brighter side.
