  • "THAT'S WHY (I Love You So)" & "LONELY TEARDROPS"
    JACK LEROY "Jackie" WILSON JR.
    (June 9, 1934 -- January 21, 1984)
This video was recorded in Michigan, Jackie's home state, several months before his last performance on September 29, 1975. He was performing as part of Dick Clark's Good Ole Rock 'N Roll Revue in New Jersey. and while singing "My heart is crying" from his signature song, "Lonely Teardrops" Wilson had a heart attack and fell and hit his head. Medical personnel saved his life, but because of the time it took to revive Wilson, he ended up in a coma. Although he recovered slightly, his great voice never spoke again and he spent the rest of his life in a semi-comatose state, dying on January 21, 1984.
Wilson's coma and death were not the only indignities and problems he faced in his troubled life. He fought drug addiction, and his womanizing led to an angry lover shooting him in 1961. During the height of his career, he had to play to segregated audiences in the South, and at one point New Orleans police arrested and beat him after they disapproved of one performance. In 1967, he was arrested on morals charges in South Carolina for being in a motel room with a white woman. In 1970, his 16-year-old son was killed by a neighbor during an argument. Throughout his career, his manager did not handle money properly and Wilson was left with tax debts and no money.
In the early 1970s, though, he started turning his life around, giving up alcohol and drugs and finally getting rid of the manager who caused his financial problems. But then he had the heart attack. When he finally died, he was penniless, so he was buried in an unmarked grave in Detroit, like a pauper.
Yet, he still is remembered. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987, and his grave is now marked, including the words, "No more lonely teardrops."

I will say this in ALL sincerity in the BEST respectful way that I can.
As much as I admire BOTH Elvis Presley and Michael Jackson, undisputed icons FOREVER to be etched into our psyche," Mr.Excitement " Jackie Wilson was THE ULTIMATE ENTERTAINER.
Yes, Jackie Wilson had EVERYTHING a singer and entertainer could ever wish to possess. He had it in a spades.
Wilson possessed a level of talent that neither Elvis nor Jackson even in their PRIMES could quite match.
A voice that to this very day has NO rival and a range that defied human limits. Only a well trained opera singer could stand shoulder to shoulder with Jackie Wilson and not be overshadowed.
Wilson was extremely flexible and had INCREDIBLE dance movements that inspired BOTH Elvis and Jackson.
Neither Presley, Michael nor James Brown possessed the vocal dexterity of Jackie Wilson. Wilson put uncanny feeling into a song that very, very few could match and this is not an exaggeration.
For those who want to hear for themselves listen to A) Danny Boy B) Rags to Riches C) Doggin Around and D) Night
I would also add the classic Star Dust.
Wilson even according to his good friend Elvis, should've been the biggest star in America at the time when Elvis was busy recording movie music soundtracks that were quite frankly bland and inferior material. Sadly Jackie Wilson suffered from horrible and corrupt management and poor song selection that did not compliment his amazing talent.
Wilson had just as much charisma as Presley and the two even looked somewhat similar in facial appearance.
The ONLY difference one being white and the other black. Everyone tried to imitate Wilson but came up short. There was only ONE.
It was absolutely criminal what happened to this super novas career and to this day
I often wonder in the case of Wilson what might've been had he signed on with Motown. RIP Jackie Wilson.

Curtis Ostriker Yes what you say is all true...I guess it was not in the cards for Mr. Wilson.....but I will say this.........I know Jackie Wilson knew what he had..........when U Got...It....U Got It....and I know he knew he did indeed have....It....

The point isn't how he was taken advantage of. The point is, there isn't anyone alive today, other than Operatic Singers, who can even come close to his natural Talent. The 'singers' of today aren't even in the same species as him. Even with them laughably needing computers to help them 'sing'. Jackie is the history of American song.

In January 1975 I joined Jackie's touring Band "The Godfather". I was actually hired as the band's dance set guitarist, for his guitarist/musical director did not play those sets. I did, however, have the opportunity to back Jackie on second trumpet during a few shows. Jackie was the most unbelievable entertainer, and oh what a voice. I remember having a rehearsal in the Latin Casino where Jackie wanted to work up Stevie Wonder's "You Are the Sunshine of My Life". There were no horn charts, so I arranged it for the band. Later, Jackie paid me $25 for the charts. This was huge for this 21 year old, (and a deal of $$ back then). I soon left the band for they were doing no dance sets, for a while. Later, I heard the tragic news, of the next time Jackie was in Cherry Hill. I always wondered if I had been the last music arranger for Mr. Entertainment? Such memories...

The world is the loser for not given the opportunity to know and hear Jackie Wilson better. He was the greatest complete entertainer the world has ever produced. He always gave his all and showed that he really loved his audience and what he did. Yet, lesser artists of his day were given more prominence. Sadly, this was too much for Jackie and so many other black entertainers, he passed away like a nobody instead of like the treasure that he was. Now we watch him and wonder, what the hell was wrong with his world!

You need to get a grip and worship people who truly deserve it whats wrong with this world is people like you acting like a guy who sings and was paid 40 times more than the average guy is some great entity .

If you ever have opportunity to hear his album live at the Copa you will discover not only could he sing RNB , but his voice enable to do St James Infirmary. Michael Jackson always gave credit to Jackie Wilson of being his idol. Showman, vocalist and spiritual good man. I miss him so much he was my mentor, friend and big brother. RIP Jackie and welcome BBKing , B E. King and Percy Sledge I know you all putting on show stopping performance as you all did in sixties on tour together.

One of the greatest entertainers. He left it all on the floor. You could see it. He was exhausted after the show when he hopped off the stage. He didn't hold anything back. At almost 40, it's not as easy, but he gave it all. You got your money's worth & then some. R.I.P. Jackie. Too bad you didn't take care of yourself. Take care of yourself, people. You only get one chance. This is it.

Elvis had no moves and stole his songs from Blacks? Well who was that guy that was called the pelvis, the one that had songwriters most of whom were white, beating down his door to plead with him to record their songs?
By the way, Jackie Wilson admitted he took some moves from Elvis.
Your type of person are a stupid blast from the past stereotype issuing the same tired old cliché.

It sounds clichéd to say this, but in Wilson's case, it's a cliché that sadly is true: they just don't make 'em like that anymore. Thanks so very much for sharing this exciting and enjoyable clip!

When Jackie dropped to his knees & singed there while bouncing around caught up in the feel, I said to myself, "now that's a performer" .......I believe that this is a simple performance that future performers should watch & study........... Jackie Wilson The Great.

+keithchanner The Hologram USA organization is in negotiations with the Wilson family and attorneys to "legally" use the name and image of Mr. Jackie Wilson. As you may know, Jackie's career was controlled by his old record label (Brunswick Records). Let's hope Brunswick Records release the material needed to produce this long-awaited tribute to "Mr. Excitement".

Nothing wrong with the audience. This is from a PBS program filmed at a nightclub. I had seen Jackie MANY times is nightclubs such as this where people went there to see the artists perform...in Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Lake Tahoe, San Diego, etc. Back in the day, when you went to a nightclub/supper-club, you actually sat there and watched and listened and drank in every note and move....today's "clubs"...more noise that anything, people talking and running around. The band on this program, is not good at all.

not at all, they're having a good time...I have posted many times about this...nothing lame about this at all. Back in the day, when Jackie played club...not what they call "Clubs" today, audiences actually sat and watched and listened...not like today when people scream and holler and volume is so loud you really can't hear a thing. At concerts, it was a whole different thing...People would go absolutely wild...Jackie was amazing, words can not describe his performances. Again, this was a nightclub setting for a TV program...there is much more than just what you see here, including an interview....I have the original program from when it was aired back in 1975...not long before that tragic night in New Jersey.

Elvis Presley paid for the Hospital Care of Jackie Wilson after he collapsed from a heart attack in 1975 and fell into a coma.

+Bill Bass The records and reports state that Dick Clark paid the majority of Jackie's hospital bills, not Elvis, although he was a contributor. Also, Al Green and other performers ( though not as well known) contributed to his care. Thanks to all who did cherish this incredible performer.

Beautiful timing and pitch control. But the secret of Sam Cooke, Otis Redding, Etta James and JW is control over the abrasive quality. These days you can buy apps that have settings like 'warm clip distortion'. JW and the others had it built it. Check the way he flavours the cry 'Aa-ah' around 6:00

Sadly, they are playing small clubs and dive bars. The mainstream is too focused on the manufactured pop that is out currently. Apparently talent isn't "good enough" for the mainstream since they are focused with bright lights, costumes, choreography, and lip-singing or lip-syncing. But this is just my opinion. I would love to have Jackie Wilson's son start getting into the much deserved lime-light! We need more performers like this!
